Shownotes

Puppyhood is magical, exhausting, and nothing like the Instagram version this episode is the honest conversation every new puppy parent needs.

In this episode of The Yappy Hour, host Nathan Dunleavy talks with Carrie of Carrie's Canines and Friends, a dog trainer with a decade of experience helping first-time puppy parents navigate the toughest early months. Carrie draws on her own journey - including raising a reactive dog - to unpack sleep deprivation, biting, puppy blues, and why building relationship and bond matters more than quick obedience wins.

If you're in the thick of puppyhood (or preparing for it), this one will make you feel a lot less alone.

In this episode:

✅ Why "puppy blues" are completely normal and why even experienced trainers feel them

✅ The real reason your puppy is nipping, jumping, or biting (hint: it's rarely about defiance)

✅ How much sleep puppies actually need, and why overtiredness fuels bad behaviour

✅ Why your puppy isn't a "blank slate" and how genetics and breeding shape who they become

✅ How to build the relationship and bond that makes recall, lead work, and everything else easier

✅ What socialisation really means (it's not meeting every dog and every person)

✅ Why asking before letting your puppy be petted by strangers matters

✅ How to set your puppy up for the life you actually want to live with them, pub trips, cottages, and all

Key takeaways:

• Puppy blues are a normal part of the adjustment and it's okay to find it hard, even when you love your puppy

• Don't take water away before bed to manage toilet training; work through the overnight stage humanely instead

• Hold off on expensive toys and beds early on as they're likely to be chewed before your puppy grows into them

• Prioritise relationship and bond above obedience and the rest follows more easily once that's in place

• Socialisation is about calm, positive exposure to the world in short bursts, not overwhelming your puppy with every dog and person you meet

• Training doesn't end after a six-week puppy course - it continues for life

Speaker:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Welcome to the Yappy Hour, powered by

2

:

Yappily, the podcast for dog lovers.

3

:

Dog parents, and anyone who

wants to deepen their bond

4

:

with their four-legged friends.

5

:

I'm your host, Nathan Dunleavy, and today

we are diving into the world of puppies.

6

:

Now, if you've ever bought a puppy

home, you'll know just how magical those

7

:

first cuddles can be, but you'll also

know that it's not all wagon towels.

8

:

And cute Instagram moments.

9

:

It can be tough, overwhelming,

and quite frankly exhausting

10

:

to explore this properly.

11

:

I'm joined by my friend Carrie of Carrie's

canines and friends who has helped

12

:

countless families navigate Puppyhood

with her training programs, memberships,

13

:

and practical down to earth advice.

14

:

Today we'll be lifting the lid on what

life of a puppy really looks like.

15

:

Why first time puppy parents often

feel blindsided and how we can

16

:

better prepare for the reality.

17

:

So grab a cup of tea, settle

in, and let's get started.

18

:

Oh, but you might wanna keep

your pup occupied with a

19

:

chew for the next hour or so.

20

:

Let's get into it.

21

:

How are you doing?

22

:

Carrie: am good.

23

:

Thank you.

24

:

How are you?

25

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Very good.

26

:

So.

27

:

Carrie, before we get into the world of

puppies, can you just tell us a little

28

:

bit about you, your journey into dog

training and what led you to create puppy

29

:

programs and your membership, please?

30

:

Carrie: Yes, I'm Carrie.

31

:

I own and run Carrie's

canines and friends.

32

:

I was about to say own three dogs then.

33

:

So very recent, fortunately I lost

one of mine, so automatic still.

34

:

So I have two dogs.

35

:

I did have a little CPO

36

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

37

:

Carrie: I've lost recently.

38

:

I own a C cross spaniel who is Maisie,

and I have Envy, who's a working cocker.

39

:

So I obviously love Spaniels.

40

:

I've been going for nine,

it'll be 10 years next year.

41

:

I've been running my

business for me 10 years now.

42

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Wow.

43

:

Carrie: so I've been dog trainer

pretty much the same amount of time.

44

:

Obvious, do my training

before I set the business up.

45

:

Yeah, I came to it 'cause I, I've

been there, I've been there with a

46

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

47

:

Carrie: knowing what to do.

48

:

I've probably had all the same problems

that everyone else has had with puppies.

49

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

50

:

Carrie: my first own.

51

:

I class it as my first own diagnosis.

52

:

Some wall C clients.

53

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

54

:

Carrie: for the first time, having

your own dogs, very different.

55

:

So compared to

56

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: it is.

57

:

Carrie: it?

58

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

and that's, that's what people get.

59

:

Like, oh yeah, I've had dogs for years

with the family, but when you own a dog

60

:

and you are that guardian, that sole

provider, like I didn't have any dogs

61

:

until 11 years ago, so I didn't grow up

with dogs, so I'm quite a late bloomer.

62

:

So it was a big shock to the system.

63

:

I.

64

:

Carrie: is, and I think

that's what people go through.

65

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

66

:

Yeah, it's brilliant.

67

:

And you've been going, I didn't

even know, so carry your personal

68

:

friend and colleague of mine.

69

:

So it is so lovely to have you on.

70

:

I didn't know you'd been going that

long, so that's a really good achievement

71

:

that, you know, been running your

business for as long as you have.

72

:

'cause it's can be tough sometimes.

73

:

So yeah.

74

:

Well done.

75

:

I'm really pleased for you.

76

:

Carrie: it's been going that long.

77

:

And before that I was a dog walker for

a separate company, so before I became a

78

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

79

:

Carrie: from my career.

80

:

So I used to work in the fashion industry.

81

:

was trained to grow in the

82

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

83

:

Carrie: before I cha changed

my career completely.

84

:

So I wanted to work with dogs

and I enjoy working with people.

85

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

86

:

Yeah.

87

:

I mean, I know someone else

that was in the fashion CRI

88

:

and they've come with dogs.

89

:

My background's obviously corporate

banking, so it's funny how all

90

:

our journeys lead to where we are.

91

:

And you mentioned, obviously you,

you knew you've been in the shoes of.

92

:

Pet parents, pet guardians.

93

:

I've got an SA dog that sat

in my lap at the moment, so

94

:

that's why I got trained in sa.

95

:

We both like train together

in doing the same SA course.

96

:

That's how we met.

97

:

But it's mad how everyone I speak

to, they get into it because

98

:

of like their own dogs or it's,

99

:

Carrie: that's

100

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

know what I mean?

101

:

Carrie: I owned a reactive dog and

I didn't know what to do with him.

102

:

But the difference is he was a seven

and a half stone dog that reacted.

103

:

So he was a large breed black.

104

:

So other dogs quite often

don't like black dogs.

105

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

106

:

Carrie: he was lunging.

107

:

He was going on back his back

legs and I was going home in tears

108

:

going, I don't understand why this

dog is such a loving dog at home.

109

:

And was turning to my back

110

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm-hmm.

111

:

Carrie: And that's when I started

112

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Wow.

113

:

Carrie: how, 'cause the answers

I was getting weren't nice.

114

:

When I was phoning

115

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Now,

116

:

Carrie: I was like,

this doesn't feel right.

117

:

that's started leaking

118

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

119

:

Carrie: how can I help him myself?

120

:

And here we are.

121

:

I'm a doc trainer.

122

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

well as we know, there's still a lot

123

:

of old style traditional dog train out

there, and that's all I knew 11 years ago.

124

:

And that was all it was.

125

:

So kind of about, and obviously

we've moved on, you know, since then.

126

:

When, when I got my poodle, I first

torpedo willow, that's when I realized

127

:

there was a better way and a nice,

kinder, ethical way to train your dog.

128

:

They're a bit like you.

129

:

Thank you so much for that.

130

:

Loved li I've learned something now.

131

:

I've known you for.

132

:

Four or five years now.

133

:

But I learned something new every

day, every day's a school day.

134

:

So Curry, what do you love most

then about working with puppies

135

:

and first time guardians?

136

:

Carrie: I always said, who

just wants work puppies?

137

:

But I know quite a few dog trainers that

don't actually want to work with puppies.

138

:

I love

139

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

140

:

Carrie: I love starting to under

dogs and understanding actually

141

:

what they've got come home.

142

:

'cause everyone has this like.

143

:

They're raised into glasses and stuff

of what it's gonna be like and people

144

:

don't obviously really quite tell

you what's gonna really, it's gonna

145

:

really be like, and yeah, showing

146

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

147

:

Carrie: what their dogs are capable of.

148

:

We tend to

149

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: mm

150

:

Carrie: dogs a lot and actually

get 'em to show them that the dogs

151

:

can think themselves quite a bit.

152

:

You've just got to give

them a bit of a chance.

153

:

We have to guide them.

154

:

Gosh,

155

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's it.

156

:

Carrie: to guide them a lot of

the way, but also just get them

157

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

158

:

Carrie: and then guide

them with that choices.

159

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

160

:

No, I love that.

161

:

Absolutely love that.

162

:

And it's funny you say about dog

trainings not wet and puppies, but

163

:

when I was doing predominantly dog

training, I loved the puppies because

164

:

Carrie: book.

165

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I.

166

:

It's just so important to

get them while they're young.

167

:

You know, we've got that key sensitive

socialization period that we know about.

168

:

I just think it's so important just

to, to get them while they're young.

169

:

So before bad habits creep in.

170

:

And you know, obviously there's a

lot of, like we said, first time

171

:

dog goes, there's a lot of mis

mis advice online and on TV shows.

172

:

So if we can get in there while

they're young and sometimes those

173

:

puppies then stay with you, you know.

174

:

Carrie: it's, I always say with

Google it's just like health things.

175

:

If you search up a health problem,

you'll either get the answer you

176

:

want or the answer you don't want.

177

:

Dog training is exactly the same,

so I, it was one of the things I say

178

:

to my clients in the first session,

quite often on the phone, don't

179

:

Google it if I don't dunno the answer.

180

:

I know enough dog trainer friends

that one of them will have the answer.

181

:

Please

182

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

183

:

Yeah.

184

:

Dr.

185

:

Google's got a lot to answer for.

186

:

Carrie: chat GPT now.

187

:

Shouldn't it?

188

:

Don't chat GPT.

189

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh yeah, don't chat.

190

:

Yeah, don't AI it.

191

:

Yeah, that's a whole

different story anyway.

192

:

Alright, so moving on to part two then.

193

:

We mentioned about the

rose tinted glasses.

194

:

So this is what our next section's

all about, the rose tinted glasses for

195

:

puppy guardianship, puppy parent ship.

196

:

So let's start with the big one.

197

:

When people bring home a puppy, what do

you think they're least prepared for?

198

:

I'm laughing already.

199

:

Carrie: it really changes and every

new puppy owner will have different

200

:

problems as which I talk through with the

owners when they're really struggling.

201

:

So sleepless nights is

one people struggle with.

202

:

Sometimes it's toilet

203

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

204

:

Carrie: A lot of it's the biting.

205

:

But you might get

206

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

207

:

Carrie: that's sleeping through

the night straight away.

208

:

It's come from a really good breeder.

209

:

It's sleeping through the night,

but God, the bitings horrendous.

210

:

Or you might have another one

211

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

212

:

Carrie: sleeping through the night,

but actually no issues of biting.

213

:

So it really, this all

214

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

215

:

Carrie: you get your puppy from

genetics, what breed you've bought.

216

:

Some people don't sometimes

research the breed well enough.

217

:

I don't think.

218

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

no, they don't.

219

:

Carrie: roast tinted glasses on that.

220

:

And don't Ida Dax owner.

221

:

And she was like, so when I

was speaking to all these Dax

222

:

owner, why did they not tell me?

223

:

These are some of the traits that

the dogs had when I said, you know,

224

:

you've got a barky breed, don't you?

225

:

And she went, no, I didn't.

226

:

How much did you research the breed?

227

:

So again, it's something I talk about

228

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

229

:

Carrie: what do you know what you've got?

230

:

What is your job bred to do?

231

:

I've been told once, yeah.

232

:

Oh, I've just bought a pet dog.

233

:

Yeah.

234

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh.

235

:

Carrie: Doesn't quite work like that.

236

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Big

on education, like pet parents and

237

:

big on research in the breed as well.

238

:

Like what were they originally bred for?

239

:

Because sometimes you need to tap

into those instincts, don't you?

240

:

Or if those needs are not being

met, that's where some of the

241

:

problematic behaviors become alike.

242

:

Carrie: Oh, massively with the spaniel.

243

:

Your spaniels, your golden retrievers.

244

:

Oh, they keep carrying

stuff around the house.

245

:

Well, that's what your

daughter's been bred to do.

246

:

this is when they go,

247

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

248

:

Carrie: dog brings me a present.

249

:

Every time I get home.

250

:

I'm like, your dog isn't

bringing you present.

251

:

Sorry, your dog is just carrying

something as it naturally feels

252

:

really good and releasing those really

good chemicals and going, awesome.

253

:

I've got something to carry.

254

:

It feels amazing.

255

:

And they're like, oh, brings me a present.

256

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

257

:

Carrie: I'm pleased.

258

:

Do not take that thing off.

259

:

Your puppy, let carry

260

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

No, do not.

261

:

Carrie: something called

262

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

263

:

Yeah, do let, or don't take or do

swapsies or, you know, a, a good drop it.

264

:

And you just, just rewind a little bit.

265

:

You mentioned about the puppy biting.

266

:

It's like they're little

land sharks, aren't they?

267

:

So,

268

:

Carrie: biting is super, super.

269

:

Yeah.

270

:

It's a, it is a tough time to get through.

271

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

272

:

Carrie: the biting, the sleeping,

those like us after the towards

273

:

you went off to hundreds.

274

:

Yeah.

275

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

no, it's okay.

276

:

Carrie: people like can

really struggle with.

277

:

And it's just all about redirecting.

278

:

And everyone's like, yeah, it's

279

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

280

:

Carrie: toys on the floor.

281

:

Yeah, they don't care.

282

:

They don't want the toys.

283

:

They're after you.

284

:

They want your attention.

285

:

So you just have to show

them what's acceptable.

286

:

And with, with

287

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

288

:

Carrie: sort, I always say, what?

289

:

You've got to think about your puppy.

290

:

What do you want your

older dog to be like?

291

:

You have to start treating your

puppy like that straight away.

292

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, I really like that.

293

:

Yeah.

294

:

Yeah.

295

:

I had got a funny story about a puppy

when I did a one-to-one, the woman like.

296

:

She, she wasn't like particularly

a doggy person but she said, oh

297

:

the dog keeps going for my pom-poms

on the back of my slippers.

298

:

So she had like a pair of like slipper

boots with pom-poms on the back.

299

:

And I'm like, well, of course it's

going for the pompoms because there's

300

:

this thing dangling around and to her

puppy, it's like the best thing ever.

301

:

So I said, do you either need to cut the

pompoms off or lose the bloody slippers?

302

:

She couldn't work out why he was

going for the pompom on his lips.

303

:

Yeah, so we wanna be setting

the puppies up for success.

304

:

So, you know, you need to puppy

proof your home, your clothes don't

305

:

have your best pair of like jeans on

your Calvin Klein jeans or whatever.

306

:

If you don't want your puppy chewing on.

307

:

Carrie: Completely agree.

308

:

Yeah, your life get get turned upside

down, not just for those first few weeks

309

:

realistic iss the first year before you

are putting outfits into your life more.

310

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

that's it.

311

:

Right.

312

:

Let's move on to that.

313

:

And so why do you think there's

still such a rose tinted view of

314

:

puppy puppyhood, even when there's

so much information out there?

315

:

Carrie: information overload, isn't it?

316

:

information

317

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

318

:

Carrie: And people have, they

speak to friends and stuff as well?

319

:

Oh yeah.

320

:

Having a puppy is amazing.

321

:

Yeah, the rose into glasses.

322

:

If I tell you what my first dog

did, he pulled down a washing line.

323

:

He, what else did he do?

324

:

Chew a pair of glasses.

325

:

Chewed a laptop, cable.

326

:

What else did he eat?

327

:

He ate a, quite a lot of things.

328

:

far

329

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh my God,

330

:

Carrie: you don't know what you

don't know is what I say to people.

331

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yes.

332

:

Carrie: learn along the way.

333

:

I have been there.

334

:

Which I think sometimes can help with

clients understand a bit more because

335

:

then they go, oh, it's doing this.

336

:

I'm like, bet your dogs were perfect.

337

:

I was like, I've been there.

338

:

I wasn't always a dog trainer.

339

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

340

:

That's the thing, like with the person

down the park or the friend or the family

341

:

member, like they mean well, but, but

just because they've had a dog for 20

342

:

years doesn't mean like they're an expert.

343

:

Carrie: exactly.

344

:

And everyone thinks that when they've

only one dog, they're an expert and

345

:

yeah, they, they tell you all the

good things about having a puppy.

346

:

And don't get me wrong,

having a puppy is awesome.

347

:

I love having puppies, but

my God, they are hard work.

348

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, we're not, we're not here

349

:

just obviously dis and puppies.

350

:

Like, don't get me wrong, I've had seven

dogs from puppies and I've bred and

351

:

I've brought puppies into the world.

352

:

I've delivered them.

353

:

So, you know, that's why I've

now got seven dogs, because

354

:

I've had seven puppies.

355

:

So I've been through it, but I

can honestly say, I dunno if I'd

356

:

have a puppy again, but we're not.

357

:

I know we're not dissing puppies.

358

:

I love puppies.

359

:

Like just, we're trying to make

people aware of just obviously

360

:

everything you know, you need to

be, be, you need to be prepared for,

361

:

Carrie: feel okay.

362

:

It's okay to go.

363

:

Oh my God, this is hard work.

364

:

One of the things I talk about is in

one of my first sessions is puppy blues.

365

:

Puppy blues is a thing.

366

:

I have puffy blues in my

367

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

368

:

Carrie: and I'm a doctorate and I'm

369

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

370

:

Carrie: to do know what I'm doing.

371

:

I do know what I'm doing, but I

372

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

373

:

Carrie: those thoughts of.

374

:

older dogs were doing absolutely okay.

375

:

I've brought a puppy into my life.

376

:

I'm trying to run my own business.

377

:

I have to see clients and answer

calls and do zoom calls, and how

378

:

am I supposed to get this puppy?

379

:

And I don't wanna get it wrong.

380

:

Dog training, my puppy can't be wrong.

381

:

Can it?

382

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I know,

I know we do put ourselves under pressure,

383

:

like, you know, we should have the best

behaved dog, but it's not always the.

384

:

Carrie: Yeah.

385

:

And every, and everyone gets poppy blues.

386

:

It's an absolute normal thing to have.

387

:

and if my client has said

to me, no, I've not had it.

388

:

I love this puppy.

389

:

It's awesome.

390

:

I'm having the best time.

391

:

Usually you're about a week later they

go, I've had that thought, Carrie, and

392

:

I said, it's okay to have that thought.

393

:

Bit of

394

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

395

:

Well, yeah.

396

:

Let's just move on to our

final question in this section.

397

:

So if you could sit down with every

first time puppy parent, before they

398

:

even bring their puppy home, what's

the one truth you'd want to tell them?

399

:

Carrie: The one truth.

400

:

Just take each day as it comes.

401

:

And actually quite often I do

get puppies, owners get me in

402

:

before they get the puppies home.

403

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I am glad you said that.

404

:

I was gonna touch on that.

405

:

Yeah, so like these pre prep

sessions, like puppy prep.

406

:

Carrie: I'm talking

through a lot of stuff.

407

:

Your problem behaviors.

408

:

I'm doing development stages.

409

:

We're talking about body language.

410

:

it's setting the puppy up.

411

:

Success.

412

:

We're talking about how to create

training correctly, get overnight.

413

:

And you get me in doing that four.

414

:

You're gonna set

yourselves up for success.

415

:

Oh God, yeah.

416

:

One thing definitely not to do.

417

:

Don't buy the expensive toys and

harnesses and everything else.

418

:

The puppy

419

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

420

:

Carrie: and it is going to wreck when I

421

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

422

:

Carrie: and they've got brand new beds.

423

:

I'm like, yeah, put that in the cupboard.

424

:

We'll get that on six months.

425

:

It's a

426

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

427

:

Carrie: but your pocket will

428

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

429

:

Yes.

430

:

And then that's gonna

make them frustrated.

431

:

They've wrecked the expensive

bed and made a mess.

432

:

Like, now I wish more

pet parents did do that.

433

:

I had a few people do, do what you've just

said, like these pre prep sessions, but,

434

:

and I did try, try to sort of market 'em,

but I just wish I felt every pet parent.

435

:

Like there should be like some

sort of licensing or whatever.

436

:

Every pet parent should always, you know,

like sometimes like apparently if you

437

:

are a certain religion, you have to go.

438

:

If you're gonna get married, you

go to these counseling sessions.

439

:

I feel like puffy parents need

to go to like free or free

440

:

sessions with a dog trader.

441

:

Yeah, they do because

I had one client do it.

442

:

We did the session and then they were

getting a puppy the next day and I'm

443

:

like, no, we need more time to prepare.

444

:

I'm glad they did it,

but we needed more time.

445

:

Carrie: just helps 'em get

446

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

But yeah, can,

447

:

Carrie: away and then straight away you're

not coming to the train with problems.

448

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

449

:

Carrie: up for success straight

away as much as we possibly can.

450

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, I love that.

451

:

Can you just imagine if we did have like

puppy, pre puppy counseling session?

452

:

Carrie: Well, there might

be a market for that.

453

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I

think there might been, do you know

454

:

what we are sort of like counselors

to the, to the humans as well.

455

:

Like, 'cause they're pulling their

hair at their sleep deprived.

456

:

Apparently.

457

:

I don't have children.

458

:

It's like having a newborn

baby, so, you know, they forget.

459

:

Carrie: told are worse than a new

460

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

461

:

Worse than a newborn baby.

462

:

Yeah.

463

:

Carrie: Has a friend

464

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

that's wild.

465

:

Yeah.

466

:

Carrie: the puppy was more hard

work than all of the children.

467

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I can't, I can't believe that.

468

:

But anyway.

469

:

Right.

470

:

So our next section is the hard

bits then that nobody talks about.

471

:

Sleep def, we've, we've

just spoken about some.

472

:

So sleep deprivation, toilet training,

accidents, nipping, crying all night.

473

:

Puppies are hard work,

but they are rewarding.

474

:

But what are the most common struggles

that you are seeing at the moment

475

:

that new puppy parents are facing?

476

:

Carrie: is again, this, this, the sleep.

477

:

And people don't realize how hard it

is when you're not getting the sleep.

478

:

And I have people go, well, I've

been told to take the water away.

479

:

Let's take the water away before

the puppy goes to bed, because they

480

:

won't need the toilet, will they?

481

:

My response is, if I tell you tonight

you cannot have a drink after eight

482

:

o'clock, what are you all gonna want

to do for the rest of the night?

483

:

Is have a drink?

484

:

You'll be thirsty.

485

:

Why we shouldn't allow

our dogs to be thirsty?

486

:

'cause we want to toilet

train them the quick.

487

:

It's, I think it's inhumane.

488

:

To be honest, you shouldn't

be taking the water

489

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

490

:

Carrie: the puppy.

491

:

You just have to work through it.

492

:

I

493

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

494

:

Carrie: it was Envy was a puppy.

495

:

I still call her puppy.

496

:

She's four and a half.

497

:

I forgot how hard the overnights

were and I was like, oh God.

498

:

I've got a new sympathy for my clients

once again, because I'm absolutely

499

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

500

:

Carrie: work.

501

:

The biting iss hard

502

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

503

:

Carrie: It depends what

you want to focus on.

504

:

For me, when the puppy comes home,

I'm focused on relationship and

505

:

bond with my dogs most importantly.

506

:

And toilet training, 'cause I

just don't want, don't want them.

507

:

We in the house if I'm completely on it.

508

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

509

:

Carrie: things

510

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: mm.

511

:

Carrie: And the other stuff

I lived with my parents.

512

:

I'm living there around minute but at

the time, and they've got thin skin.

513

:

So for me, biting was massively to be on

514

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

515

:

Carrie: of.

516

:

I had piles of toys

showing it again and again.

517

:

This is what you and her response was.

518

:

Th no 30 seconds.

519

:

She would stand a toy.

520

:

I mean, less than 30 seconds.

521

:

Oh, that toy's boring.

522

:

I'm going to bite you.

523

:

And I was like, here's another toy.

524

:

And it wasn't one or two toys.

525

:

I was going through 10 toys.

526

:

Here's number one, here's number.

527

:

We'll play retrieve, we'll

play retrieve 30 seconds board.

528

:

Again, I'm gonna bite you and I mean

she was going launching you, but for

529

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

530

:

Carrie: So you find the

thing for your lifestyle

531

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

532

:

Carrie: fixing first.

533

:

Sorry.

534

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

535

:

No, no.

536

:

And I think it's important not

to, you know, overload it all but

537

:

also bearing in mind that they're

not meaning to do it, are they?

538

:

This is the thing.

539

:

They don't mean it, like they're, they're

learning and it's this new scary place

540

:

with all these different smiles and sound

have been taken away from their little

541

:

mates and their mom and the people that's

been, you know, the breed or whatever.

542

:

So.

543

:

You know, we need to give 'em a little

bit of slack that they, they don't

544

:

mean it, and it's a big, it's big

and it's scary for them, you know?

545

:

Carrie: just attention, they

do biting, they do jumping for

546

:

attention and I always describe it as

547

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

548

:

Carrie: guidance like

you do with children.

549

:

You go to show the

550

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm-hmm.

551

:

Carrie: would like them to do, but also

go, I wouldn't like you to do that, but

552

:

rather, rather than just going, no, my

dog does, my dog doesn't listen to know.

553

:

That's what I get.

554

:

A lot of my dog doesn't know what no is.

555

:

When I tell 'em no, they ignore me.

556

:

And I'm like, well, have you showed

them something else to do instead?

557

:

like, if you told me, no, I don't.

558

:

What, what am I supposed to do?

559

:

I'll just do the thing again.

560

:

Like a childhood.

561

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

562

:

Yeah.

563

:

I think I was once told that

dogs don't really understand.

564

:

No.

565

:

But I dunno how much

truth there is in that.

566

:

Carrie: don't

567

:

Particularly do.

568

:

'Cause it, again, you're

saying no to a lot of things.

569

:

dogs.

570

:

First, you need to be, if you're

teaching a dog, are down, that

571

:

means tummy on the floor for me.

572

:

And if you want me to get

off something, I use off.

573

:

If I use down for both.

574

:

Your dog's confused.

575

:

So how can they not be

576

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

577

:

Yeah, that's a good one actually.

578

:

I was, I'm I to say about

the down and off thing.

579

:

What I was gonna say is

over tiredness, bity Bity.

580

:

Carrie: Massive,

581

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

582

:

Carrie: down for a nap

just like you do a baby.

583

:

If you do not do that, your

biting is worth the jumping

584

:

up is everything is a worse.

585

:

And people go, oh my dog, my

dog won't go down for a nap.

586

:

And I was like, well,

you just have enforce it.

587

:

Your puppies

588

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

589

:

Carrie: 18 rounds, 20 hours of

sleep and have 24 to begin with.

590

:

And they're

591

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

592

:

Carrie: my probably

probably gets about 12.

593

:

I'm like, that's where

you've got the problems.

594

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I know.

595

:

They don't realize, they don't realize

that they need that amount and then

596

:

they don't realize, obviously like

a child, they're overti, so they

597

:

are gonna be more jumping by you.

598

:

Carrie: Yeah, yeah.

599

:

That's, yeah, that's a really one

that does come up actually, that

600

:

they just don't get enough sleep.

601

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

602

:

And then I used to tell 'em to do a sleep

diary and you'd be, then that's when they

603

:

were amazed at how much sleep they weren't

getting the, the puppy, not the parent.

604

:

Carrie: Yeah.

605

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

How do you.

606

:

No.

607

:

I know.

608

:

How do you help people balance

that love and excitement?

609

:

Oh, you know, it is exciting.

610

:

New puppy.

611

:

So cute.

612

:

With the reality of frustrate,

frustration, guilt, and feeling like

613

:

they're failing in inverted comm.

614

:

Carrie: because people don't wanna get

it wrong, which doesn't sound good.

615

:

We, none of us like to get it wrong.

616

:

We want to get it completely

right floppies, don't we?

617

:

tend just to enjoy

618

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

619

:

Carrie: Yeah, enjoy your puppy.

620

:

Your puppy is not a puppy for long and

all of a sudden they are four and a half.

621

:

I've got MV over here, four and

a half years old and you dunno

622

:

where that puppy time has gone.

623

:

Enjoy them.

624

:

But just think about, I was trying

someone a bit about, I hate using

625

:

the word like rules and stuff,

but we all need rules in our life.

626

:

Yeah.

627

:

And 'cause their dog was doing

a little bit of barking and then

628

:

she goes, oh, he's being kook.

629

:

She gave him a treat.

630

:

I went, yeah, I don't do that.

631

:

You've just told me to do the

right thing for barking at you.

632

:

So think about again what I said

earlier, what do you want your

633

:

dog to be like when they grow up?

634

:

Remember these little things

puppies sometimes are quite cute.

635

:

It's not cute, and they're a big

dog, you are like, actually, I

636

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

637

:

Carrie: when the pro time.

638

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

639

:

Yeah.

640

:

Brilliant.

641

:

Do you think we do enough as a society

to support new puppy guardians, or are

642

:

people left just to figure it out alone?

643

:

Carrie: Supporting, I suppose you, I

suppose I sometimes think about people

644

:

in the street coming over to your puppy.

645

:

Oh,

646

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh yeah.

647

:

Carrie: who doesn't?

648

:

Again, we all do.

649

:

We see a puppy.

650

:

I'm like, I'm go say hello to the puppy.

651

:

But a lot of people will come

straight over to your puppy and start

652

:

stroking a puppy without asking.

653

:

If I was

654

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I hate that.

655

:

Carrie: my child and you came

over and tried to straight my

656

:

child's head, what would happen?

657

:

But why is it acceptable for

you to come over and straight

658

:

my dog's head without asking me?

659

:

I find that really weird.

660

:

I'm not relating children's dogs before

anyone complains, but I'm just saying

661

:

for me, they're part of my family

and I and you are invading my space.

662

:

used to

663

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

664

:

Carrie: puppy class and what of my puppies

now, so I used to run classes as well.

665

:

Teaching the middle, I like

middle anyway, but what,

666

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

667

:

Carrie: but what I used to

668

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I like middle.

669

:

Carrie: someone, if you're someone who's

coming over to straight your puppy, you

670

:

put your dog into middle, someone that's

very unlikely to go between your legs.

671

:

I

672

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

673

:

Carrie: have someone come back

to me once and went, Carrie, you

674

:

know that thing you promised me?

675

:

She went, someone went between

my legs to strip me puppy.

676

:

I was like, I was so

677

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

678

:

Carrie: It's only happened once.

679

:

And then he said Years.

680

:

So that's not too bad, but.

681

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: well,

person went in between their legs.

682

:

Carrie: So you complete

invasion of face, isn't it?

683

:

So really ask if you see a puppy

in the in the street, just ask the

684

:

owner if you can say hello or not.

685

:

And I've Eric, who I've recently lost, it

was massively overwhelming for him, but he

686

:

was, CPU looked like a teddy bears puppy.

687

:

So how many people once say hello to him?

688

:

And I had to keep saying no.

689

:

Sorry.

690

:

You can't say hello.

691

:

No you can't.

692

:

People just come over and str him.

693

:

'cause you look like a teddy bear.

694

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, I hate that.

695

:

Carrie: And you must get poodles and

stuff as well when they're young.

696

:

Oh, they're cute.

697

:

Look how cute they are.

698

:

Yeah.

699

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, they are.

700

:

'cause they're like teddy bears as well.

701

:

But yeah, it comes back

to boundaries again.

702

:

Right.

703

:

Let's move on then.

704

:

So beyond puppyhood and long-term

success, what are some of the most

705

:

important foundations owners should

focus on in that first year that

706

:

really set their dog up for life?

707

:

Carrie: I am going back

to relationship and bond.

708

:

If you've got relationship and

bond with your dog, the other

709

:

stuff honestly just comes easier.

710

:

Everyone will come to me with, I

want recall and I want lead work.

711

:

They are two of the hardest behaviors to

teach, but people didn't understand that.

712

:

so I'm like, get the relationship

and bond having fun with your puppy,

713

:

which I've not mentioned today.

714

:

Having fun and playing your

puppy is massively important.

715

:

It builds your

716

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

717

:

Carrie: It also starts teaching things

like a tr behavior and a relieve it.

718

:

So all these things can build into

each other, but enjoying your time.

719

:

Your puppy, your puppy will

go when they're off leave.

720

:

Well, what we doing next?

721

:

be turning and checking you on your walk.

722

:

Which way are we going next?

723

:

What's gonna happen next?

724

:

Walking down the road, they're

checking with you, where

725

:

are we going, what we doing?

726

:

Rather than having to be really strict

in command you, you must stay to heal and

727

:

they're checking with you all the time.

728

:

So if you've got a good

relationship and bond, the lead

729

:

work and stuff will, will come.

730

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, no.

731

:

So important to work on

that bond and relationship.

732

:

Yeah, definitely love that.

733

:

Do you find that some pet parents,

puppy guardians are so focused on

734

:

getting through puppyhood that they

forget that the journey then continues?

735

:

Carrie: Six week puppy course.

736

:

I've done the six week puppy course.

737

:

I'm

738

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's it.

739

:

I'm done.

740

:

I'm done.

741

:

Trainings for life.

742

:

I used to say.

743

:

Carrie: And it is for live.

744

:

Someone asked me once do you

always take treats in your walk?

745

:

I said, yes.

746

:

Excuse me.

747

:

I said, yes.

748

:

I said, but do I always

use the treats of my walks?

749

:

But the answer is also no.

750

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

751

:

Carrie: tests on this as

well on my, my own walks.

752

:

I did a walk once on purpose.

753

:

I didn't recall my dogs once

just to see what was happened.

754

:

They just followed me.

755

:

They were checking 'cause they

were already checking in with me.

756

:

We were checking

757

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Checking in.

758

:

Carrie: I would change direction

and oh, she's gone that way.

759

:

And this

760

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

761

:

Carrie: your relationship

and bond with your dog.

762

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

mm because there's so much you might

763

:

need those treat for, like, if, if

it's a high value treat, you might

764

:

need it for a distraction, might you?

765

:

Carrie: yeah,

766

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

And to reward them.

767

:

Carrie: my dogs when I've done a good

job and if I've not got anything on me

768

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

769

:

Carrie: how can I tell 'em they've done

a really good job That time my dogs

770

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

771

:

Carrie: in the dead rat.

772

:

How proud was I, my friend's dog

when a dog rolled in a dead rat and

773

:

I gave a quite a strong leave it.

774

:

they really called straight back

to me, 'cause in my head to my

775

:

dogs and leave it as a promise.

776

:

I'm going to give you some treats.

777

:

They came straight back to me

and I heavily rewarded them.

778

:

They didn't roll on Deborah.

779

:

I was

780

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

781

:

Carrie: that.

782

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

no, I bet.

783

:

And it's so important as well,

just to reinforce it, isn't it,

784

:

with that high value reward what,

what gets rewarded gets repeated.

785

:

Carrie: repeated, and would you

go to work and not get paid?

786

:

I'm just paying my dogs

for a job Well done.

787

:

I also like

788

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

789

:

Carrie: especially like the puppy

owners as well, straight away, to

790

:

getting rid of that treat word.

791

:

not treats, it is all just food.

792

:

This is also

793

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

794

:

Carrie: human, in the human

world with dieting and stuff.

795

:

It's not, it's just food.

796

:

It has different calories.

797

:

It'll keep you full up for longer

and stuff, but it is all just food.

798

:

If I've been out for an

799

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: True.

800

:

Carrie: it's very unlikely I'm gonna

want a three course meal that night.

801

:

Yes, I'm gonna balance it.

802

:

If I've been out training my dogs

803

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

804

:

Carrie: really need a dinner, do they?

805

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

806

:

Yeah.

807

:

What I was gonna say as well is

that basically it is about building

808

:

that value in you, making you

you more high value than the dead

809

:

rat or the deer in the distance.

810

:

'cause you need to, you need

to build up that you are worth

811

:

coming back for, don't you?

812

:

Carrie: that's against relationship and

813

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

814

:

Carrie: Your dog

815

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

816

:

Carrie: awesome to come back you.

817

:

like I, I remember doing a leave of envy.

818

:

I just a on the floor.

819

:

I didn't really want.

820

:

She's got, she's a working cocker,

she likes to pick stuff up.

821

:

I was like, oh, don't,

please don't pick it up.

822

:

I don't have to take off you.

823

:

So I just asked her to leave it.

824

:

Two seconds later,

825

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

826

:

Carrie: dogs came around the

corner straight away and I was

827

:

like, well, to be honest, they've

left whatever they were doing.

828

:

They do get a treat for that.

829

:

'cause

830

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

831

:

Carrie: instantly when they've heard a

leave, even though they were outside.

832

:

But again, that's relationship

833

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

834

:

Carrie: They've heard my voice and

they've gone, we need to go back to mum.

835

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

and obviously there's so much more you can

836

:

do with your dog, like beyond puppyhood,

like, like sports, like agility, hoopers.

837

:

There's scent work isn't there?

838

:

So

839

:

Carrie: loads.

840

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: you

might, yeah, you might want to continue

841

:

that journey and continue cementing

that bond, I used to say by doing

842

:

some sort of follow on class or sport.

843

:

Carrie: your dog's bread for

Envy's done some gun dog training.

844

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

845

:

Carrie: had a, Maisy was my first

dog when I became dog trainer,

846

:

so I also got her when I started

doing my dog training course.

847

:

So she's 10, roughly 10 and a half.

848

:

I wanted to learn from

firsthand experience.

849

:

My first dog wasn't a eight

week old puppy, he was four

850

:

months, I think roughly.

851

:

He was, I got from Dog Trust, so I

wanted to Snake World called Cookie

852

:

so I could go through the development

stages so I could really understand them.

853

:

so she has done, she

used to be a disc dog.

854

:

She has performed at the NEC.

855

:

She's performed at a couple

of places doing disc dog.

856

:

She has done a little bit of

agility since she's c Cross manual.

857

:

It

858

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

859

:

Carrie: wild.

860

:

I also slightly went to the wrong training

place for that, which she live and learn.

861

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Do?

862

:

Carrie: done, what else has she done?

863

:

A bit of dog dancing, who works music.

864

:

We've done

865

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

866

:

Carrie: bit of that.

867

:

She's tried a

868

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

869

:

Carrie: sports and it's

finding, just having

870

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: wow.

871

:

Carrie: together.

872

:

Trick training.

873

:

So we've done trick training

with, we have Lucy Heaths.

874

:

We did some trick training with her.

875

:

That was loads of fun.

876

:

De amazing's, got a ridiculous

877

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

878

:

Carrie: and we've

879

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh

880

:

Carrie: trick training with

other dog trainers as well.

881

:

finding what

882

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: yeah.

883

:

Carrie: dog enjoys doing.

884

:

And I push, I push this with

885

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

886

:

Carrie: clients.

887

:

What do you enjoy doing?

888

:

What would you like to try?

889

:

And I go through the dog sports.

890

:

There's Rally.

891

:

Maisie does rally as well.

892

:

She's doing competitions in rally.

893

:

So that's more of like an

894

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: mm.

895

:

Carrie: style sport.

896

:

Or quite often see the agility

or the mask about the fly ball

897

:

that they've seen on Crufts.

898

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

899

:

Can you just tell us disc dog?

900

:

I've not heard of that.

901

:

And our view, our li, our li

our listeners might not know.

902

:

So what is Disc dog?

903

:

Carrie: some Frisbees and basically

getting your dog to jump off you and

904

:

rebound off you and catch the Frisbees.

905

:

is so much

906

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh,

907

:

Carrie: So unfortunately

she's retired from doing that.

908

:

Now she's got potential arthritis.

909

:

It one of one of her favorite things to

do if I get the Frisbees out so she can,

910

:

if I kneel on the floor, she will jump

off my thigh into the fly, into the air.

911

:

For me to catch a Frisbee.

912

:

I've chuck something.

913

:

That way jump off my back.

914

:

I've probably got photos of it.

915

:

I dunno if I've got any videos of it.

916

:

So we did it to music at the NCI

think it's a national pet show.

917

:

We did a demo at, the disc dog to

918

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

919

:

Carrie: Yeah, so she used to be able,

if I bent over, she'd jump off my back

920

:

into the air to catch the disc and stuff.

921

:

Should rebound off the front of me.

922

:

You don't see it as much, but

yeah, if you've not heard of

923

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No.

924

:

Carrie: have a look into it.

925

:

It's such a good spot.

926

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Oh yeah.

927

:

No, there's, I just love it.

928

:

And there's just so much you can

do with your dog isn't there and

929

:

it doesn't, training doesn't stop

at the end of the six week class.

930

:

Carrie: about, wasn't it?

931

:

But yeah, it doesn't

932

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

933

:

Carrie: stop at end of the six weeks.

934

:

Training is

935

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

936

:

Carrie: are reinforcing

stuff through the life.

937

:

Look at what you said before.

938

:

What gets rewarded gets repeated.

939

:

Reinforcing through the re now

and again, the recall them getting

940

:

an horse every now and again.

941

:

Just give 'em a massive

piece of whole sausage.

942

:

They've done it.

943

:

They've done like a easy recall,

but they get a sausage for it.

944

:

They go, oh, that's worth doing.

945

:

Why get that again?

946

:

Reinforcing the little

things that you want.

947

:

You don't know the envy's in here.

948

:

Have you noticed she's in here?

949

:

She's fast asleep.

950

:

That's a working span.

951

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

952

:

Carrie: asleep.

953

:

She has not, she came on say hello

to you when we first popped on.

954

:

Then she's just slept, hasn't she?

955

:

But I spent

956

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

that's it.

957

:

Yeah.

958

:

Carrie: Reinforcing switch

off when I'm working.

959

:

If I'm sat at this

desk, she needs to rest.

960

:

It took me over a

961

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's good.

962

:

Carrie: get this with her,

963

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Wow, that's so good.

964

:

Yeah.

965

:

Love that.

966

:

What do you want people to understand

about raising happy, fulfilled adult dogs?

967

:

Not just cute puppies carry,

968

:

Carrie: Fulfilling your dog's needs?

969

:

Are all your dog's needs being met?

970

:

Are they getting the

physical exercise they need?

971

:

if people always ask, how much exercise

should I be walking my dog for?

972

:

I'm like, well, how much exercise

do you do you also want to do?

973

:

So there's no point in me giving

a prescription of what I do.

974

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: I.

975

:

Carrie: needs, things like the breed.

976

:

You've got mental, mental stimulation.

977

:

This isn't just getting you

snuffle mats out and mental

978

:

stimulation is the environment.

979

:

Taking them somewhere new, not doing the

same walk every day the same way round.

980

:

Even mix it up the opposite way.

981

:

Fun thing to do is just like, go on

982

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

983

:

Carrie: ask the dog which way

to go and just follow them.

984

:

If it goes to a short walk,

goes to a short walk, it's

985

:

just mixing these things up.

986

:

Just yeah, giving them something to chew.

987

:

Oh, my dog's got loads of stuff to chew.

988

:

I've got loads of toys.

989

:

Give them something to

eat, physically eat.

990

:

They enjoy chewing, release

endorphins in the brain.

991

:

It makes 'em feel good.

992

:

Why give them

993

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

994

:

Helps.

995

:

Carrie: And yeah,

996

:

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

997

:

Carrie: helps.

998

:

Massive.

999

:

You watch that TV

:

00:33:16,188 --> 00:33:16,338

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: it.

:

00:33:16,403 --> 00:33:18,203

Carrie: on TV and your

dog's still little bit wild.

:

00:33:18,203 --> 00:33:19,433

I've got two working line dogs.

:

00:33:19,433 --> 00:33:21,593

Sometimes they just need to,

something to chill out with.

:

00:33:23,223 --> 00:33:23,733

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:33:23,733 --> 00:33:27,273

And well, I was gonna say like, obviously

the chewings really good for like the

:

00:33:27,273 --> 00:33:31,083

brain and mental stimulation, but I'm

really big advocate on letting the

:

00:33:31,083 --> 00:33:33,123

dog's nose lead the way on the walk.

:

00:33:33,573 --> 00:33:35,163

It's, it's their walk.

:

00:33:35,163 --> 00:33:37,593

So let them choose what way they're going.

:

00:33:37,793 --> 00:33:38,858

Carrie: 'em track some scents.

:

00:33:38,858 --> 00:33:39,758

Let 'em have some fun.

:

00:33:40,808 --> 00:33:41,318

And then like we were

:

00:33:41,368 --> 00:33:41,658

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:33:41,678 --> 00:33:42,848

Carrie: there's loads of different sports.

:

00:33:42,848 --> 00:33:44,798

You can do like man training

and stuff with that as well.

:

00:33:44,798 --> 00:33:46,868

Who wants to do man

train scent work courses?

:

00:33:46,868 --> 00:33:49,808

There's loads about these days

a lot more than they used to

:

00:33:49,983 --> 00:33:50,463

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:33:50,798 --> 00:33:50,888

Carrie: Yeah.

:

00:33:50,888 --> 00:33:51,788

They see so much of the

:

00:33:52,008 --> 00:33:52,518

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Definitely,

:

00:33:52,598 --> 00:33:52,688

Carrie: Yeah.

:

00:33:52,688 --> 00:33:56,468

It's one of my pet hates people

dragging their puppy along, moving.

:

00:33:57,108 --> 00:33:57,763

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I hate it.

:

00:33:57,788 --> 00:33:59,828

Carrie: world for their

noses that pee on the post.

:

00:33:59,828 --> 00:34:01,088

That isn't just one message.

:

00:34:01,088 --> 00:34:02,378

I think it's like text messages.

:

00:34:03,188 --> 00:34:04,688

I am, I'm a poodle.

:

00:34:05,408 --> 00:34:06,788

I'm brown in color.

:

00:34:06,938 --> 00:34:08,257

I am, I dunno if you're male or female.

:

00:34:08,257 --> 00:34:08,708

Sorry.

:

00:34:08,918 --> 00:34:09,277

I am.

:

00:34:10,848 --> 00:34:11,058

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: He's.

:

00:34:11,408 --> 00:34:12,728

Carrie: I am an adolescent.

:

00:34:12,878 --> 00:34:13,328

Oh yeah.

:

00:34:13,328 --> 00:34:14,588

I'm looking for the girls.

:

00:34:15,967 --> 00:34:18,217

He's leaving all these messages to

the other dog, but it's not that

:

00:34:18,217 --> 00:34:19,568

one last message on that page.

:

00:34:19,568 --> 00:34:20,467

It's probably about 50.

:

00:34:20,467 --> 00:34:22,928

Your dog is reading, so

layers of text messages.

:

00:34:22,928 --> 00:34:24,818

So let your dog sniff, let your.

:

00:34:25,458 --> 00:34:26,328

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I love that.

:

00:34:27,527 --> 00:34:28,878

I love that analogy of text.

:

00:34:29,208 --> 00:34:33,737

I always used to refer it as like

DNA, like that's like a thumbprint

:

00:34:33,737 --> 00:34:36,737

because they're working out

whether that dog's been neutered.

:

00:34:36,828 --> 00:34:39,518

How old breed sex.

:

00:34:40,303 --> 00:34:41,293

Carrie: My name's envy.

:

00:34:41,293 --> 00:34:42,553

I'm looking for the boys yet.

:

00:34:42,553 --> 00:34:44,172

She was awful when she

used to come in to see.

:

00:34:44,322 --> 00:34:45,433

I'm very flirty.

:

00:34:46,213 --> 00:34:48,072

but yeah, they're leaving all

those messages to each other.

:

00:34:48,072 --> 00:34:49,453

It's like leaving text messages behind.

:

00:34:51,068 --> 00:34:51,878

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I love that.

:

00:34:52,158 --> 00:34:52,578

Right.

:

00:34:52,578 --> 00:34:53,328

Let's move on.

:

00:34:53,328 --> 00:34:57,258

And God, we've sailed through this

episode, so we're gonna start wrapping

:

00:34:57,258 --> 00:35:01,768

it up with the last sort of five minutes

or so, some final questions and thoughts.

:

00:35:01,768 --> 00:35:05,458

So it's been jam packed full of lots of

useful information all about puppies.

:

00:35:05,848 --> 00:35:09,238

But Carrie, what's one myth

about raising puppies that you'd

:

00:35:09,238 --> 00:35:11,998

love to bust once and for all?

:

00:35:12,003 --> 00:35:13,623

Carrie: They're not a blank

slate when they come to you.

:

00:35:14,493 --> 00:35:15,363

Everyone thinks, see, I've got

:

00:35:15,448 --> 00:35:15,898

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm-hmm.

:

00:35:16,353 --> 00:35:17,793

Carrie: It's a brand new,

you know, blank slate.

:

00:35:17,793 --> 00:35:18,303

It isn't.

:

00:35:18,783 --> 00:35:23,163

You have got re traits, you've got

genetics, you've got mum's experience.

:

00:35:23,193 --> 00:35:24,423

You know, before she was even pregnant.

:

00:35:25,848 --> 00:35:26,748

experience.

:

00:35:26,748 --> 00:35:30,828

You've got health, nutrition, how the

mum was treated while she was pregnant.

:

00:35:31,008 --> 00:35:31,128

Yeah.

:

00:35:31,128 --> 00:35:34,248

Prenatal environment, early environment.

:

00:35:34,248 --> 00:35:37,248

So before the puppy came to you,

what, you know, that's a massive,

:

00:35:37,398 --> 00:35:40,488

you know, all these things, that's

not a clean slate you've got.

:

00:35:41,418 --> 00:35:41,748

So that's,

:

00:35:41,848 --> 00:35:42,058

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

:

00:35:42,078 --> 00:35:45,378

Carrie: you'll sometimes get some

puppies that come to you, crate trained.

:

00:35:46,128 --> 00:35:49,008

some puppies come into you that

are pretty much toilet trained.

:

00:35:49,473 --> 00:35:50,088

'cause, 'cause the

:

00:35:50,233 --> 00:35:50,893

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah,

:

00:35:50,988 --> 00:35:51,978

Carrie: of work into there.

:

00:35:53,923 --> 00:35:55,663

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I mean there's some really good

:

00:35:55,663 --> 00:35:58,408

breeders, but obviously there's

some not so good, isn't there?

:

00:35:58,578 --> 00:36:02,088

Carrie: yeah, I've heard a lot of,

oh, it's gone off of my head now.

:

00:36:02,868 --> 00:36:03,228

Age.

:

00:36:04,848 --> 00:36:05,958

Yeah, that one's gone completely.

:

00:36:05,958 --> 00:36:06,738

But yeah, you get some

:

00:36:07,018 --> 00:36:07,598

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's alright.

:

00:36:07,878 --> 00:36:10,488

Carrie: coming through where,

yeah, you can tell I'm afraid.

:

00:36:10,848 --> 00:36:11,778

I, I can tell when I go

:

00:36:11,978 --> 00:36:12,268

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:36:12,738 --> 00:36:15,648

Carrie: it's one of the questions I

ask, where has this puppy come from?

:

00:36:15,648 --> 00:36:16,848

Is it from a breeder?

:

00:36:17,053 --> 00:36:17,593

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm

:

00:36:17,598 --> 00:36:18,318

Carrie: from a farm?

:

00:36:18,558 --> 00:36:19,458

Which I have had for

:

00:36:19,813 --> 00:36:20,383

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: mm

:

00:36:20,488 --> 00:36:22,798

Carrie: Envy's breeder, I can highly rate.

:

00:36:22,848 --> 00:36:25,218

She has just got the sweetest

temperament and stuff.

:

00:36:25,218 --> 00:36:25,818

You can tell.

:

00:36:25,998 --> 00:36:27,858

I can tell she was really well bred.

:

00:36:28,668 --> 00:36:29,028

Eric

:

00:36:29,323 --> 00:36:29,833

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Oh, that's good.

:

00:36:29,898 --> 00:36:30,828

Carrie: a well bred dog.

:

00:36:31,048 --> 00:36:32,518

His was definitely genetics.

:

00:36:32,518 --> 00:36:35,248

He would never have been fixed with

all his issues that he did have.

:

00:36:35,248 --> 00:36:35,728

Bless him.

:

00:36:36,318 --> 00:36:40,518

But that's, that's the things, this is

why it is worth its weight goals, what

:

00:36:40,518 --> 00:36:42,198

it tells people getting a good breeder.

:

00:36:43,608 --> 00:36:44,208

So worth

:

00:36:44,668 --> 00:36:45,928

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

it's so important.

:

00:36:46,558 --> 00:36:50,998

And obviously they've got those

periods when they're with the

:

00:36:50,998 --> 00:36:54,838

breeder, but can we just quickly

touch on that window, like eight to

:

00:36:54,838 --> 00:36:57,718

12 weeks or, I've not really, yeah.

:

00:36:57,718 --> 00:37:00,508

I'm not really up on my knowledge

anymore, but it's, that's such

:

00:37:00,508 --> 00:37:01,863

a critical window, isn't it?

:

00:37:02,253 --> 00:37:02,523

Carrie: weeks

:

00:37:03,043 --> 00:37:03,778

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's it.

:

00:37:03,988 --> 00:37:04,558

Yeah.

:

00:37:04,953 --> 00:37:08,073

Carrie: period where dogs can,

puppies can take on the world

:

00:37:08,133 --> 00:37:09,813

much easier like a child.

:

00:37:10,113 --> 00:37:11,313

So they could take all the information on.

:

00:37:12,063 --> 00:37:15,813

What socialization isn't is meeting

lots of dogs and lots of people.

:

00:37:16,053 --> 00:37:17,253

So yes, they need to meet people

:

00:37:17,293 --> 00:37:17,863

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:37:18,273 --> 00:37:18,933

Carrie: but not everyone.

:

00:37:19,333 --> 00:37:19,843

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:37:19,953 --> 00:37:21,003

Carrie: this is what people think.

:

00:37:21,003 --> 00:37:21,363

Social.

:

00:37:21,363 --> 00:37:24,033

So, socialization, generalization

is how I look at it.

:

00:37:24,033 --> 00:37:28,143

You're taking, your dog into the world

and getting them used to the world.

:

00:37:28,203 --> 00:37:29,523

You want a puppy to go?

:

00:37:29,853 --> 00:37:31,653

Some we're in a new place, can't wait.

:

00:37:31,653 --> 00:37:32,218

I'm really excited.

:

00:37:32,463 --> 00:37:34,983

Not a puppy that gets somewhere

new goes, oh my God, where are we?

:

00:37:34,983 --> 00:37:35,618

What's gonna happen now?

:

00:37:36,418 --> 00:37:40,563

So you want lots of positive

experience, but very short bursts.

:

00:37:40,563 --> 00:37:42,663

15, 20 minutes at that time of age.

:

00:37:42,813 --> 00:37:44,373

'cause most of 'em, you can

be carrying your puppy anyway.

:

00:37:44,703 --> 00:37:46,473

Your Labrador, you're not

gonna be carrying for long.

:

00:37:48,063 --> 00:37:50,583

so you want to take them somewhere

for like 15, 20 minutes, see

:

00:37:50,583 --> 00:37:52,653

the world, take them home.

:

00:37:52,653 --> 00:37:54,123

And what they need to do is have a sleep.

:

00:37:54,123 --> 00:37:58,473

But we talked about earlier, your puppy

processes what they've seen during

:

00:37:58,473 --> 00:38:00,333

their sleep and they can wake up again.

:

00:38:00,513 --> 00:38:02,678

They've processed it, they're ready

to go again, so they can do so new.

:

00:38:03,708 --> 00:38:07,578

Yeah, so I always look at it as well

as what do you like doing with your

:

00:38:07,578 --> 00:38:11,488

life and where would you like to

take your dog for the next 10, 12,

:

00:38:11,488 --> 00:38:12,898

16 years that you've got your dog?

:

00:38:13,738 --> 00:38:17,458

So for me, I'm laughing because my

clients always laugh when I tell 'em.

:

00:38:17,458 --> 00:38:21,118

This one, I like going,

walking after my walk.

:

00:38:21,118 --> 00:38:22,198

I quite like to go to the pub.

:

00:38:23,458 --> 00:38:27,388

I, my dogs need to be pub trained,

or my dogs are pub trained, or my

:

00:38:27,388 --> 00:38:29,158

dogs are trained to travel well.

:

00:38:29,248 --> 00:38:30,868

'cause I like traveling

around the country.

:

00:38:31,723 --> 00:38:32,053

so yeah, I

:

00:38:32,218 --> 00:38:32,508

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:38:32,773 --> 00:38:34,543

Carrie: if you like going to the pub,

guess what I'm gonna tell you to do?

:

00:38:34,543 --> 00:38:37,273

If you're training tonight, you are

going to take your puppy to the pub.

:

00:38:37,483 --> 00:38:39,043

They're like, also, you

tell you to go to the pub.

:

00:38:39,043 --> 00:38:39,823

I'm like, yes.

:

00:38:40,093 --> 00:38:40,928

Because if this is what you

:

00:38:41,123 --> 00:38:41,693

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

I've never.

:

00:38:43,238 --> 00:38:47,288

I've never had a pub train before,

but I'm guessing like we wanna teach

:

00:38:47,288 --> 00:38:49,088

like a good settle or mat settle.

:

00:38:49,088 --> 00:38:49,358

So

:

00:38:49,573 --> 00:38:52,033

Carrie: into a busy environment

and teaching them to settle.

:

00:38:52,903 --> 00:38:54,013

If you enjoy going to

:

00:38:54,038 --> 00:38:54,638

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

pub train?

:

00:38:54,643 --> 00:38:55,483

Carrie: that's what you need to do.

:

00:38:56,218 --> 00:38:57,123

Like I said, I like, I like

:

00:38:57,128 --> 00:38:57,818

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:38:57,898 --> 00:38:59,278

Carrie: so my dogs go camping

:

00:38:59,353 --> 00:38:59,553

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: do?

:

00:38:59,668 --> 00:39:01,888

Carrie: as possible to get

them used to that environment

:

00:39:01,888 --> 00:39:02,608

because it's weird for them.

:

00:39:02,608 --> 00:39:04,498

Going camping is weird people.

:

00:39:04,498 --> 00:39:04,708

I was

:

00:39:04,983 --> 00:39:05,403

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm-hmm.

:

00:39:05,488 --> 00:39:08,518

Carrie: in the age district all of

a sudden there was people walking

:

00:39:08,518 --> 00:39:09,508

around with head torches on.

:

00:39:09,508 --> 00:39:10,108

It was pitch black.

:

00:39:10,108 --> 00:39:11,068

My dog went first night.

:

00:39:11,068 --> 00:39:12,418

They went, oh my God, what is going on?

:

00:39:12,868 --> 00:39:13,048

Yeah.

:

00:39:13,048 --> 00:39:16,258

It was settling them again into that

environment of dogs, walking past

:

00:39:16,258 --> 00:39:21,058

tents or don't people walking past

noises, sudden noises, dogs barking.

:

00:39:21,433 --> 00:39:22,338

They were super depress

:

00:39:22,553 --> 00:39:23,123

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

:

00:39:23,383 --> 00:39:25,183

Carrie: when all the dogs were

parked barking on the camp site.

:

00:39:25,183 --> 00:39:26,623

They didn't react as much

as I thought they would.

:

00:39:27,253 --> 00:39:28,123

'cause it's a hard environment

:

00:39:28,193 --> 00:39:28,853

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

That's good.

:

00:39:29,323 --> 00:39:29,473

Carrie: Yeah.

:

00:39:29,473 --> 00:39:29,953

Getting your

:

00:39:30,113 --> 00:39:30,683

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:39:30,733 --> 00:39:33,343

Carrie: always get people to almost

make a list of the places they

:

00:39:33,343 --> 00:39:34,963

would like to go and take their dog.

:

00:39:34,993 --> 00:39:37,603

Like going ho holiday in

later street called cottages.

:

00:39:38,263 --> 00:39:41,053

need to get your dog used to that

and great time to do it as a puppy.

:

00:39:41,083 --> 00:39:42,763

'cause you can take

them with their crates.

:

00:39:43,153 --> 00:39:44,293

The crate is their homes.

:

00:39:44,293 --> 00:39:45,163

They get to the new place.

:

00:39:45,163 --> 00:39:46,363

They like, oh, this is

my, just my new home.

:

00:39:47,023 --> 00:39:47,953

My dogs travel.

:

00:39:47,953 --> 00:39:50,833

Well for that reason, they have traveled

to a lot of different friends' houses.

:

00:39:50,833 --> 00:39:54,523

They've been to a lot of cottages

over the time and be probably less.

:

00:39:55,333 --> 00:39:57,763

So it just means I just take crates

and stuff with me and they go, okay,

:

00:39:57,763 --> 00:39:58,663

this is where we're living now.

:

00:39:59,743 --> 00:40:00,133

They get to my

:

00:40:00,438 --> 00:40:00,558

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Hmm.

:

00:40:01,153 --> 00:40:03,583

Carrie: and they know how to act

at my friend's houses 'cause I've

:

00:40:03,583 --> 00:40:07,363

taught 'em, it's just another house

and you just act the same again.

:

00:40:07,363 --> 00:40:08,113

All these things in

:

00:40:08,258 --> 00:40:08,648

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:40:08,743 --> 00:40:09,493

Carrie: Yeah, you socialize.

:

00:40:09,583 --> 00:40:12,613

It's such an important age, but

I also say with socialization.

:

00:40:13,393 --> 00:40:14,893

It doesn't stop at that 16 weeks.

:

00:40:14,893 --> 00:40:16,843

It goes on for the first

two years of their life.

:

00:40:17,263 --> 00:40:18,013

Do you want to get your

:

00:40:18,193 --> 00:40:18,413

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

:

00:40:18,553 --> 00:40:20,773

Carrie: to as many things

that you want 'em to be used

:

00:40:20,773 --> 00:40:23,153

to in those first two years?

:

00:40:23,303 --> 00:40:26,603

So like the first 16 weeks are the most

important where they can take stuff.

:

00:40:26,603 --> 00:40:29,303

It un easier, but you're

still social socializing.

:

00:40:29,783 --> 00:40:30,608

You get your dog used to the.

:

00:40:32,643 --> 00:40:33,063

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Mm.

:

00:40:33,483 --> 00:40:33,873

Yeah.

:

00:40:34,173 --> 00:40:34,803

Love that.

:

00:40:34,803 --> 00:40:37,203

I just, I'm still

getting over pub trained.

:

00:40:37,348 --> 00:40:39,263

Carrie: I think my clients live

all their time to go to the pub.

:

00:40:39,413 --> 00:40:40,103

Not all clients.

:

00:40:40,553 --> 00:40:40,673

All

:

00:40:40,798 --> 00:40:41,018

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: No,

:

00:40:41,183 --> 00:40:42,413

Carrie: I can usually gauge it,

:

00:40:43,498 --> 00:40:43,718

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: no.

:

00:40:43,798 --> 00:40:44,078

I know.

:

00:40:44,573 --> 00:40:47,183

Carrie: You just want to take, if

it's not pubs, it's usually cafes.

:

00:40:47,933 --> 00:40:48,743

But it's the same sort

:

00:40:48,748 --> 00:40:48,968

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yes.

:

00:40:49,013 --> 00:40:49,193

Carrie: right?

:

00:40:49,193 --> 00:40:52,133

Once you get, want you to go out

for a coffee or probably might

:

00:40:52,318 --> 00:40:52,608

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:40:52,793 --> 00:40:54,623

Carrie: what I'd start

off with, go first one.

:

00:40:54,743 --> 00:40:56,633

If it's the pub, I go right first

you're gonna go out for half a

:

00:40:56,633 --> 00:40:58,553

pint you can go out for a pint.

:

00:40:59,168 --> 00:41:01,478

And you can go out for your

lunch with a drink and then

:

00:41:01,478 --> 00:41:02,738

you can go to move on to go.

:

00:41:02,768 --> 00:41:04,508

Can I go out for my dinner and drink?

:

00:41:05,318 --> 00:41:06,788

Be able to get gradually

as well for your puppies.

:

00:41:06,788 --> 00:41:09,728

Don't expect 'em to go to these

busy environments and just manage.

:

00:41:09,848 --> 00:41:12,158

Start from the, if it's summer,

start from the beer garden.

:

00:41:12,158 --> 00:41:12,848

The opposite end.

:

00:41:13,298 --> 00:41:14,228

Take a blanket for your

:

00:41:14,238 --> 00:41:14,898

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:41:15,008 --> 00:41:16,238

Carrie: Teach 'em straight away.

:

00:41:16,508 --> 00:41:18,278

We go to the pub, we put

something on the floor.

:

00:41:18,278 --> 00:41:20,768

This is where you sit and

it doesn't need to be a

:

00:41:20,808 --> 00:41:21,318

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:41:21,373 --> 00:41:22,853

Carrie: goes, oh, I haven't got

a dog bed to take to the pub.

:

00:41:23,603 --> 00:41:24,923

was like, we've got a

dog towel, haven't you?

:

00:41:24,923 --> 00:41:26,123

That can, I did with

:

00:41:26,178 --> 00:41:26,658

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:41:26,753 --> 00:41:29,243

Carrie: a something in the van once and

I was like, oh, I've got some towels.

:

00:41:29,543 --> 00:41:31,193

Took a towel in the pub

with May pops on the floor.

:

00:41:31,193 --> 00:41:31,853

I was like, that's your bed.

:

00:41:32,453 --> 00:41:33,113

That's where you have to

:

00:41:33,288 --> 00:41:33,918

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:41:35,688 --> 00:41:35,958

Yeah.

:

00:41:36,048 --> 00:41:36,858

I love that.

:

00:41:37,108 --> 00:41:37,498

Brilliant.

:

00:41:37,528 --> 00:41:43,348

If you could give one piece of reassurance

to, excuse me, a first time puppy parent

:

00:41:43,348 --> 00:41:47,278

who's listening right now and feeling

a bit overwhelmed, what would it be?

:

00:41:47,373 --> 00:41:48,573

Carrie: don't know what you don't know.

:

00:41:49,388 --> 00:41:50,403

dunno what you don't know.

:

00:41:50,613 --> 00:41:52,623

And just reach out to professional.

:

00:41:53,598 --> 00:41:53,928

get.

:

00:41:54,053 --> 00:41:54,803

Don't Google it.

:

00:41:55,543 --> 00:41:57,738

Get every answer they

want and asking friends.

:

00:41:57,738 --> 00:42:00,018

You'll get answers, different

answers, all of those.

:

00:42:00,018 --> 00:42:01,668

I would actually just say

reach out to professional.

:

00:42:01,998 --> 00:42:03,948

That is what professionals are here for.

:

00:42:04,248 --> 00:42:07,068

I would not come to Nathan and ask

him to come and sort my gas out my

:

00:42:07,068 --> 00:42:09,888

house because he wouldn't have a

blooming clue and it would not be safe.

:

00:42:10,728 --> 00:42:15,018

we think it's okay to ask our

friends and all our colleagues, like

:

00:42:15,018 --> 00:42:16,188

colleagues at work, how to train.

:

00:42:16,188 --> 00:42:18,438

My puppy professionals

:

00:42:18,438 --> 00:42:18,728

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:42:18,888 --> 00:42:19,458

Carrie: a reason.

:

00:42:19,458 --> 00:42:21,168

They have spent usually hours.

:

00:42:22,188 --> 00:42:24,408

Training, they top up their knowledge.

:

00:42:24,618 --> 00:42:26,928

They want to make sure they've

got the most UpToDate knowledge.

:

00:42:26,958 --> 00:42:29,328

'cause it does change over time sometimes.

:

00:42:30,378 --> 00:42:30,798

Yeah.

:

00:42:32,338 --> 00:42:32,968

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Yeah.

:

00:42:33,328 --> 00:42:35,188

So important, right?

:

00:42:35,218 --> 00:42:39,808

Finally, Carrie, where can people

find you and your puppy programs

:

00:42:39,808 --> 00:42:41,248

if they'd like some support?

:

00:42:41,363 --> 00:42:45,378

Carrie: go to www.carriescanines.co.uk

:

00:42:45,438 --> 00:42:46,668

and I'm on the socials as well.

:

00:42:46,668 --> 00:42:48,018

Mainly Facebook and Instagram.

:

00:42:48,018 --> 00:42:49,848

It's just at Carries canines.

:

00:42:50,208 --> 00:42:50,778

And come find me.

:

00:42:51,463 --> 00:42:54,163

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

Yeah, and just quickly adding on, you

:

00:42:54,163 --> 00:42:56,773

also do SA work remotely, don't you?

:

00:42:56,773 --> 00:42:56,833

So

:

00:42:56,913 --> 00:42:57,273

Carrie: also

:

00:42:57,508 --> 00:42:57,768

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

you know.

:

00:42:57,813 --> 00:42:59,103

Carrie: lot of separation.

:

00:42:59,103 --> 00:43:03,823

So for the puppies that come to me, for

me it's massively about prevention and so

:

00:43:03,823 --> 00:43:05,953

we don't have separation anxiety problems.

:

00:43:06,233 --> 00:43:08,453

But yeah, I help a lot of

people over the country who are

:

00:43:08,453 --> 00:43:11,818

separation anxiety, helping your

dogs cope and left home alone.

:

00:43:13,728 --> 00:43:14,148

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour: Good.

:

00:43:14,208 --> 00:43:17,928

Alright, Carrie, thank you so

much for joining me on the Yappy

:

00:43:17,958 --> 00:43:20,088

Hour, powered by Yappily Today.

:

00:43:20,328 --> 00:43:22,008

I've absolutely loved chatting to you.

:

00:43:22,098 --> 00:43:23,328

Thank you for your time.

:

00:43:23,498 --> 00:43:24,098

Carrie: for having me.

:

00:43:25,608 --> 00:43:26,598

Nathan Dunleavy - The Yappy Hour:

You are welcome.

:

00:43:30,717 --> 00:43:34,587

what an honest and refreshing

conversation with Carrie.

:

00:43:34,917 --> 00:43:39,417

Puppies bring so much joy into our

lives, but as Carrie reminded us today,

:

00:43:39,657 --> 00:43:44,607

they also bring sleepless nights,

chewed up shoes and moments of doubt,

:

00:43:44,667 --> 00:43:46,587

and that's all completely normal.

:

00:43:46,887 --> 00:43:49,347

Here are a few key takeaways from today's.

:

00:43:50,137 --> 00:43:54,667

Number one, puppyhood isn't

perfect, and it doesn't have to be.

:

00:43:54,937 --> 00:43:58,027

The challenges you're facing

are part of the process, not

:

00:43:58,027 --> 00:43:59,497

a sign that you are failing.

:

00:43:59,947 --> 00:44:02,797

Number two, preparation matters.

:

00:44:03,007 --> 00:44:08,887

Setting expectations early, having the

right support and making small changes at

:

00:44:08,887 --> 00:44:12,307

home can transform those first few weeks.

:

00:44:12,787 --> 00:44:15,607

Number three, focus on the long game.

:

00:44:15,907 --> 00:44:17,917

It's not about surviving Puppyhood.

:

00:44:17,962 --> 00:44:21,562

It's about raising a

confident, happy dog for life.

:

00:44:22,072 --> 00:44:26,302

Carrie, thank you so much for sharing

your wisdom and for helping us take

:

00:44:26,302 --> 00:44:31,912

off those rose tinted glasses to see

puppy ownership for what it really is.

:

00:44:32,122 --> 00:44:36,232

A journey of ups and downs

and unconditional love.

:

00:44:36,817 --> 00:44:40,417

If you enjoyed this episode,

please consider leaving a review

:

00:44:40,717 --> 00:44:44,197

or sharing it with a friend who's

about to bring a puppy home.

:

00:44:44,707 --> 00:44:49,687

And don't forget to subscribe so

you never miss an episode of The

:

00:44:49,687 --> 00:44:52,427

Yappy Hour, powered by Yappily.

:

00:44:53,047 --> 00:44:54,307

I'll see you next time.
