: [:Also living well with autoimmune disease in Maryland. I have endometriosis, lichen sclerosis, and celiac disease after recovering our health by combining the best of conventional medicine with effective and natural dietary and lifestyle interventions. Mickey and I started blogging at autoimmunepaleo.com, where our collective mission is seeking wellness and building community.
the resources they need to. [:Pick up a copy wherever books are sold. A quick disclaimer. The content in this podcast is intended as general information only and is not to be substituted for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment onto the podcast. Hi everyone. Welcome. Welcome to the Autoimmune Wellness Podcast. This is our very first episode and we are super thrilled to welcome you to this exciting project and give you a little taste of what's in store.
er and an author. I focus on [:I really specialize in providing insight and encouragement that people need in order to recognize their inner rebel and join the health revolution. I'm also the award-winning author of the Alternative Autoimmune Cookbook, featuring recipes for all phases of the autoimmune protocol and, some honest and humorous thoughts about all different facets of the healing journey.
It's a lot more than just a cookbook. I'm also the creator and director of the online group program, SAD to AIP in six, which has led over a thousand participants in the Autoimmune Protocol. We use a gentle phased transition from the standard American diet all the way through to AIP over six weeks.
And in:I also work with a small number of highly motivated one-on-one clients through the Paleo Mom consulting run by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne. And I live with my husband and our teenage daughter just outside Washington DC When I'm not writing and testing recipes or fine tuning my program, you can find me watching Tiny home TV shows.
I'm addicted reading old school 19th century literature like, Thomas Hardy, anybody crickets, anybody into that or planning dinner parties with my farmers and friends. And, I'm Mickey Trescott. I am a nutritional therapy practitioner, blogger and author, and I pride myself on finding creative solutions to succeeding on allergen-free diets.
oo. And I'm also the creator [:As I like to say, in 2012, I founded my website, autoimmune paleo.com, which reaches over 2 million people annually. Angie and I share recipes and resources for living well with autoimmune disease and chronic illness. It's a pretty awesome resource. So combining my nutritional therapy and personal chef backgrounds, I travel around the world holding workshops, cooking demonstrations, and teaching classes.
In-person events and teaching are my favorite ways to serve the community. If any of you guys have been to any of my events, hopefully you saw that. I'm also on the board of Directors for Hashimoto's Awareness, which is a support and advocacy organization for those suffering from autoimmune thyroid disease.
or doing wellness research, [:Basically, I'm trying to convince Angie to become my neighbor so we can build non-toxic tiny homes next to each other. But I do my research by watching TV shows. Basically, I am a horse crazy 30 something grandma who lives with the boonies. It's true you guys. That's what she really is. Let's talk a little bit about why we are here and our goals before moving on to the series overview.
So our mission is pretty straightforward. We're proposing an alternate way of thinking about autoimmune disease in general. We want it to be patient centered, guided by self-discovery, informed and proactive. This isn't stark contrast to the typical experience that a lot of us with autoimmune disease have this experience that leaves us feeling fearful, anxious, and demeaned.
llness, you need to become a [:Mickey and I think that despite the current standard of care, it's totally possible to live vibrantly in the face of autoimmune disease. Yeah, we actually use these methods to heal from five debilitating autoimmune diseases ourselves. We both had major health crises. We'll be talking more about that in this podcast series.
Not in this episode today, unless you guys wanna be here for a few hours. Both Angie and I have been around the block with this health stuff. This is very much a personal mission, overcoming these issues ourselves, and we've made it our mission to really share with you guys all of these years of experience.
ut in a second. But where do [:And funny enough, when Mickey and I were first putting this together and kind of trying to refine this, vision we had, it was actually a dream that helped us put these, verbs together. I had gone to bed one night thinking about this proposal that we were writing up, and I was thinking about the things that we had actually done, the steps Mickey and I had actually taken over time to heal, and deal with our autoimmune diseases.
were like, now I'm going to [:Yeah. Yeah. It was very confusing putting all the pieces together and it didn't really seem like there was any sort of rhyme or reason or any roadmap. And when we actually tried to put it together, we found it very confusing to actually write that out in a way that kind of made sense to, you know, what you're working on.
But I, I think Angie's Dream solved all our problems, so it's awesome. So maybe you can tell, the first step, Mick. Yeah. So the first step on the autoimmune wellness journey is inform, and this step is all about determining where on the spectrum of illness you lie, and recognizing the importance of diagnosis, educating yourself about your autoimmune disease, including testing, treatment, options, and prognosis.
not getting a diagnosis. You [:You could be suffering from symptoms and not know that you have an autoimmune disease specifically, or you know, you just kind of know that something's wrong and this is really important. Before you pass, go, you know, before you move on in the process, you really need to come to an understanding. Not always a diagnosis.
And we talk more about that. You know, sometimes, you know, you can't, for whatever reason get a diagnosis, but you at least need to be informed about the process. You need to figure out everything that you need to know about your current situation before you can figure out where to move forward. Right. It's very empowering information, right?
t learning how to prioritize [:It's kind of like we all know we need to have a healthcare team. We all know that we need to kind of figure out how to prioritize the process of seeking healing. But so far there hasn't been a lot of organized information about how exactly to do that. So Mickey and I took all of those years of trial and error and organized it.
Yeah, and I think collaborate actually might be one of the most difficult steps. But it's actually one of those steps that had I tackled earlier on in my journey, I probably would have received a higher quality and better treatment sooner, and avoided some of the struggles I. It's just the landscape is really hard right now to connect with medical providers that really understand.
and have people on your team [:Angie and I have actually written entire books of our own just on this step. and we call it Nourish. So you guys are probably familiar with the idea, especially if you're familiar with our work of using food as medicine and discovering that relationship of the gut to autoimmune disease. So we really like to talk about how there's no one size fits all approach to diet and really why an elimination and reintroduction protocol.
AKA, the autoimmune protocol is the best place to start to get at the root of food driven symptoms. So things like how do you transition your diet? Do you do it cold Turkey? Do you do it, you know, overnight? Or are you gonna take a long time like Angie does in her program? Are you gonna take six to eight weeks and really transition nice and slow?
ou achieve balance? We cover [:This step has enormous impact on your wellness and it's in your control. How many things do you deal with, in the realm of managing your autoimmune disease that really are not in your control? Diet is something that you make that decision however many times a day you put food in your mouth. So there's a lot of opportunity to make changes that are actually gonna help you heal your body, right?
So we go on from there to the fourth step. This is rest. This step is all about learning how to evaluate and improve your sleep. It's a super meaningful and crucial step in managing autoimmune disease, but again, one that might be a little bit overlooked, especially because our culture is kind of like a sleep when you're dead culture.
ork for us autoimmune folks. [:So a lot of that nutrition that you're eating can't really do its job unless you're sleeping and you're giving your body the time and the space to repair itself. So rest is incredibly powerful. Our fifth step is breathe. This step's about learning to prioritize self-care, not only identifying root causes of stress, but finding the motivation to make manageable changes that carry lots of impact for those with autoimmune disease.
us to really prioritize that [:Taking care of other people. A lot of us women tend to have autoimmune disease and also tend to be caring for other people. So it can be harder for us to realize that, you know, we really need to make that important. Right. This is, kind of one of the steps in the journey where you have to be really dedicated.
I would say, you know, I think for folks who are starting this journey, it's often the diet step that has people like kind of the most nervous, right? And they're worried about making that transition. But all of us, veteran AI peeps will tell you that the stress management piece is actually the hardest one to implement.
taking that time to nourish [:Right. The next step is move. You know, the human body is designed to move, and this step is centered on how to find that careful balance between too much and too little for those with autoimmune disease. We look at all aspects of fitness from the autoimmune point of view, and we especially emphasize walking as an ideal routine.
This is one of the steps that has a really fine line for those with autoimmune disease, and it can be really tough to kind of figure that out. So we try to walk folks through that and give them pointers about how to dial it in. I. Lastly, one of our favorite steps is connect. To tie it all up, we show you guys how connection is a crucial part of recovery, both with other people as well as the natural world.
're here to tell you that it [:Like we said about some of the other steps. They really feed into each other. You know, having a really good support network and a good support structure is a common thread for people that get better. It just is, and for some people that comes really naturally and other people, that's an area that they need to work really hard on.
Maybe as hard as they're working on their diet. Yeah, so we kind of give a lot of pointers about how to more, more naturally fit, connection with others and with the, you know, natural environment into your life. In this section, I. As much as we would love to say you guys, that we have all the answers, this podcast series and our book is going to lay it all out there for you.
e gurus schemes that are out [:Instead, what we are trying to present is information on how to uncover the solutions that will be specific and most helpful to your healing journey. This is really about empowerment. You know, while we were writing the book, we came across this quote from Bruce Lee, like as in Bruce Lee, the kung fu master.
And he said something that really stuck with Mickey and I, he said. Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own. And we really loved that. We felt like it really solidified what we were trying to do. Our mission here with this information, we're advocating a way to take the best of a broken system and combine it with self-empowerment.
The path we're suggesting is challenging, but it's also rewarding. By following it, you'll find a true sense of balance and it'll allow the joy of discovery to transform your lives. We know 'cause we've done it. Yeah, I mean that really came out of our experience, both as autoimmune patients and also as coaches.
ng with clients, you realize [:When you put that in there, you can't just spit out something that is gonna work for everyone. So we try to lay all of the options out on the table for everyone to try different things out and see what works for them, and hopefully it gets put together in a way that results in better health and more vitality.
onal stories, struggles, and [:This is something that we really didn't get to in depth in the book, and we really wanted to share that information with you guys because we have a lot of personal experience and history there. And then in the second episode, we are going to interview a guest that's gonna help take us a little bit deeper on those topics.
Exactly. So for instance, the first step in form, we'll have two episodes, you know, Mickey and I talking about our personal journeys with the informed step, and then speaking with a guest about the process of informing. And we'll go through each step like that. In this series, we want to speak a little bit about how we designed the book.
One of the things that we tried to do was not be too overwhelming and allow it to be a handbook, basically, so we weren't able to include as much personal information as we wanted, and so we included it in full detail in the series. Also, speaking to the handbook nature, we're keeping it short and sweet, so our guests help add some nuance and depth to the topics.
Yeah, I [:So we've designed this podcast series to be helpful, whether or not you have the book, if you guys are familiar with our website and with Angie and I's Work, you know that we don't believe in putting this information behind a paywall. We put it all out there for free. You can get the food list, the recipes, articles, all kinds of stuff.
We are all about this community, changing the system and really helping people find healing. That is our priority. But if you're able, our new book is very affordable. I think it's 15 bucks on Amazon. It would really help us spread our message far and wide. If you would pre-order or pick up a copy, depending when you're listening in.
just a really well organized [:Not to mention the meal plan elimination, diet friendly recipes and lifestyle plan. I. Awesome. Did I miss anything, Angie? No, I think you got it all. I think we, uh, we threw in lots and lots of helpful tools so folks can, hopefully be able to use that handbook to guide them on their autoimmune wellness journey.
Yeah, we've, we've really put our, our soul into it and really tried to create something that you guys will find an incredible resource. You know you guys we're here to let you know that we're pioneering a new era in how autoimmune diseases are viewed and treated. You can join us by taking ownership of this phase of your life, from participating in your medical care to deciding what is on your plate.
