Just because it made sense then, doesn't mean it makes sense now! Re-evaluate!
So it's one thing to do something, and quite another to understand why you do it. (02:14)
And while some of these actions may have made sense at some point in time, or were taught to us to make sense in some situations, that doesn't mean they necessarily still make sense for us today. (02:24)
Regular evaluation is what makes us more intentional, what makes us more purposeful with our actions. (02:35)
Quote for the episode: "If we're regularly asking ourselves, 'will this make my life more or less enjoyable', then we can be more objective and intentional in deciding what actions we actually want to take." (02:58)

Welcome to the Enjoy More 30s Family Finance
Voiceover Audio:
podcast. The only podcast dedicated to making life more

enjoyable for young families by hitting on the financial topics

that tend to weigh on us, stress us out, and distract our focus
Voiceover Audio:
from simply enjoying life.
Joseph Okaly:
Hello, and welcome once again to the Enjoy More 30s
Joseph Okaly:
Family Finance podcast, and our series this time around The
Joseph Okaly:
Financial Parables of Your Life. Each week, if you remember, I'm
Joseph Okaly:
sharing what may likely be a somewhat altered version of a
Joseph Okaly:
story that you're already familiar with because your
Joseph Okaly:
stories are easy to remember. This is how we pass down
Joseph Okaly:
information from generation to generation. This is how we put
Joseph Okaly:
our kids to bed, so why not use it to easily remember some
Joseph Okaly:
really important financial tips and tricks and everything in
Joseph Okaly:
between? So as always, before I begin, please share and like,
Joseph Okaly:
please leave reviews. I'd love to reach and help as many young
Joseph Okaly:
families out there as I can that are just like you.
Joseph Okaly:
So without any further ado, please join me today for our
Joseph Okaly:
story Great Grandma's Roast. It was Thanksgiving and the house
Joseph Okaly:
smelled wonderful. The little girl was up on her tiptoes
Joseph Okaly:
peering over the counter at all the food with excitement. As her
Joseph Okaly:
eyes came upon the roast. She asked her mother lightly, "Mama,
Joseph Okaly:
why do you cut the ends off the roast before putting it into the
Joseph Okaly:
oven?" The mother went to answer and then paused and thought for
Joseph Okaly:
a moment. "You know, dear, I'm not entirely sure. That was the
Joseph Okaly:
way my mother always taught me to do it. Why don't we ask her?"
Joseph Okaly:
They went over to grandmother relaxing nearby and the little
Joseph Okaly:
girl again asked, "Grandma, why do you cut the ends off the
Joseph Okaly:
roast before putting it into the oven?" The grandmother paused,
Joseph Okaly:
just like the mother, reflecting and replied, "I'm not sure my
Joseph Okaly:
dear. That was how my mother always taught me to do it." Now
Joseph Okaly:
luckily, the little girl's great grandmother was still alive and
Joseph Okaly:
so the girl went over to where she was sitting. And once more
Joseph Okaly:
posed the question, "Great Grandma, why do you cut the ends
Joseph Okaly:
off the roast before putting it into the oven?" The great
Joseph Okaly:
grandmother turned and replied, "Well, my dear, that was the
Joseph Okaly:
only way I was able to fit it into my oven."
Joseph Okaly:
So it's one thing to do something, and quite another to
Joseph Okaly:
understand why you do it. We all have certain assumptions and
Joseph Okaly:
momentums that are built into our daily lives. And while some
Joseph Okaly:
of these actions may have made sense at some point in time, or
Joseph Okaly:
were taught to us to make sense in some situations, that doesn't
Joseph Okaly:
mean they necessarily still make sense for us today. Regular
Joseph Okaly:
evaluation is what makes us more intentional what you know makes
Joseph Okaly:
us more purposeful with our actions. Should you just keep
Joseph Okaly:
striving to rise, say the corporate ladder and make more
Joseph Okaly:
money? What would more money specifically allow you to do
Joseph Okaly:
that you can't already do now? What will you have to give up as
Joseph Okaly:
a trade off? You know, how will it make your life more enjoyable
Joseph Okaly:
overall? If we're regularly asking ourselves, "will this
Joseph Okaly:
make my life more or less enjoyable", then we can be more
Joseph Okaly:
objective and intentional in deciding what actions we
Joseph Okaly:
actually want to take.
Joseph Okaly:
So thanks for tuning in today and join us for next week's
Joseph Okaly:
story, The Ant and The Grasshopper...and The Other
Joseph Okaly:
Grasshopper. I hope you enjoyed today's story. Please remember
Joseph Okaly:
again to review and share for others and if you need any help,
Joseph Okaly:
don't hesitate in reaching out. I probably have helped someone
Joseph Okaly:
just like you. Until next week. Thanks for joining me today and
Joseph Okaly:
I look forward to connecting with you again soon.
