Today's Passage: Job 16-21
Scripture Referenced:
Job 19
Psalm 22
1 Peter 2:19-22
Hebrews 12:2
Welcome to The Dwelling Place where
we believe that the presence of the
2
:Lord in our lives transforms us and
our dwellings with our families.
3
:I'm Stephanie Hickox, and this is
brought to you by Entrusted Ministries.
4
:As we continue in the Book of Job,
we'll look at chapter 16 through 21.
5
:I know it's a lot to cover, but because
it's written in a poetic format, these
6
:chapters go a little bit more quickly
than other portions of scripture.
7
:And if we're honest, we kind of wanna
get through all these accusations that
8
:job's friends are hurling against him.
9
:Initially, when I was
researching the Book of Job,
10
:I was sharing some of my insights with
my aunt and my boss, Betsy Corning.
11
:She's the executive director of Entrusted,
and she wrote the Biblical Parenting
12
:Study Entrusted with the Child's heart.
13
:I hope you'll look into it because I've
never seen a parenting study that is
14
:so biblical while remaining practical.
15
:Anyway, it turns out that Betsy and
I had been studying job at the same
16
:time, and she said to me, you know
what my biggest takeaway from job was?
17
:I.
18
:It was so obvious, but I'd
never thought about it before.
19
:It's that Jesus was the
perfect suffering servant.
20
:Isn't that a mic drop revelation?
21
:We look at the Book of
Job and we are in awe.
22
:Of what he endured, but
he does have weak moments.
23
:Truly, we have compassion on
him, but we can look to Jesus.
24
:Although he took on human
flesh, he lived a sinless life.
25
:Today I'm going to read a Passage of Job,
and then I'll look at a few scriptures
26
:that point us to the perfection of our
savior, i'll close by sharing a few
27
:examples of women that astound me with
their faith, and then I'll pray over you.
28
:We read Job's sixth speech in chapter
19, and it's full of despair.
29
:Then Job answered and said, how
long will you torment me and
30
:break me in pieces with words?
31
:These 10 times you have
cast reproach upon me.
32
:Are you not ashamed to wrong me?
33
:And even if it be true that I have aired.
34
:My error remains with myself.
35
:If indeed you magnify yourselves against
me and make my disgrace and argument
36
:against me, then know that God has put me
in the wrong and closed his net about me.
37
:Behold, I cry out violence,
but I am not answered.
38
:I call for help, but there is no justice.
39
:he has walled up my way so
that I cannot pass, and he has
40
:set darkness upon my paths.
41
:He has stripped me from my glory
and taken the crown from my head.
42
:He breaks me down on every
side and I am gone and my hope
43
:he has pulled up like a tree.
44
:He has kindled his wrath against
me and counts me as his adversary.
45
:His troops come on together, and
they cast up their sea ramp against
46
:me and en camp around my tent.
47
:He has put my brothers far
from me, and those who knew me
48
:are wholly estranged from me.
49
:My relatives have failed me.
50
:My close friends have forgotten me.
51
:The guests in my house and my maid
servants count me as a stranger.
52
:I have become a foreigner in their eyes.
53
:I call to my servant, but
he gives me no answer.
54
:I must plead with him
for my mouth for mercy.
55
:My breath is strange to my wife and I am
a stench to the children of my own mother.
56
:Even young children
despise me when I rise.
57
:They talk against me.
58
:All my intimate friends, AB whore me and
those whom I loved have turned against me.
59
:My bones stick to my skin
and to my flesh, and I have
60
:escaped by the skin of my teeth.
61
:Have mercy on me.
62
:Have mercy on me.
63
:Oh, you my friends.
64
:For the hand of God has touched me.
65
:Why do you like God?
66
:Pursue me.
67
:Why are you not satisfied with my flesh?
68
:Oh, that my words were written.
69
:Oh, that they were inscribed in a book.
70
:Oh, that with an iron pen and lead.
71
:They were engraved in the rock forever.
72
:For I know that my redeemer lives, and
at last he will stand upon the earth.
73
:And after my skin has thus been destroyed
yet in my flesh, I shall see God.
74
:This key verse I for, I know that
my redeemer lives, and at last
75
:he will stand upon the earth.
76
:There is a lot of debate over this,
but let me explain to you why I
77
:believe that God had given Job an
understanding about the Messiah, and
78
:that's what he's referring to here.
79
:Just as we read in Genesis three that God
had already promised he was going to send
80
:someone to save people from their sin.
81
:We get hints of it throughout scripture.
82
:First, the meaning of this word
redeemer seems to be messianic
83
:in nature in the cultures.
84
:Back then, if your property was in
danger of being lost or if someone
85
:needed to avenge a relative, they
look to the redeemer in the family.
86
:Next.
87
:We know that this is a living person.
88
:He says, I know my redeemer lives.
89
:And then he tells us he knows that the
redeemer will stand on the earth, but when
90
:that he will appear at the
last, which tells us Job knew
91
:he'd see him in the last days.
92
:And finally when he sees the redeemer,
he knows he will have seen God.
93
:Though job waivers.
94
:In his speeches, he does have
several statements that tell us he
95
:really did have hope of eternity
96
:here.
97
:In the midst of an otherwise
discouraging chapter, joe reaffirms
98
:that there is eternal hope.
99
:And this points me to the perfect
suffering servant Jesus Christ.
100
:On the cross, Jesus
began to quote Psalm 22.
101
:Many of the people standing by and even
cheering for the crucifixion would've
102
:had this portion of scripture memorized.
103
:And as Jesus began to quote it,
they had an opportunity to hear
104
:all of the Messianic prophecies
fulfilled right before their eyes.
105
:This Psalm begins, my God, my
God, why have you forsaken me?
106
:Why are you so far from saving
me from the words of my groaning?
107
:, I cry by day, but you do not answer.
108
:And by night, but I find no rest.
109
:Yet you are holy and on the praises of
Israel and you are father's trusted.
110
:They trusted and you
delivered them to you.
111
:They cried and were rescued and you,
they trusted, and were not put to
112
:shame, but I am a worm and not a man
scorned by mankind and despised by
113
:the people all who see me mock me.
114
:They make mouth at me.
115
:They wag their heads,
he trusts in the Lord.
116
:Let him deliver him.
117
:Let him rescue him,
for he delights in him.
118
:Yet you are he who took me from the womb.
119
:On you was I cast for my birth
and from my mother's womb.
120
:You have been, my God, be not
far from me, for trouble is
121
:near and there is none to help.
122
:He says, that they encircle him like wild
animals, and then I am poured out like
123
:water and all my bones are out of joint.
124
:My heart is like wax.
125
:My strength is dried up and
my tongue sticks to my jaws.
126
:They have pierced my hands and my feet.
127
:I can count all my bones.
128
:They stare and gloat over me.
129
:They divide my gum rids among them,
and for my clothing cast lots.
130
:But you oh Lord.
131
:Do not be far off.
132
:Oh, you my help.
133
:Come quickly to my aid,
134
:though.
135
:Written a thousand years before
Jesus walked the Earth, this clearly
136
:describes the death that he paid for us.
137
:One.
138
:Peter two describes
Jesus's suffering as well.
139
:Verse 19 begins for this is a
gracious thing, when mindful of God,
140
:one endures sorrows while suffering
unjustly but if when you do good
141
:and suffer for it, you endure.
142
:This is a gracious thing
in the sight of God.
143
:For to this you have been called
because Christ also suffered for
144
:you, leaving you an example so
that you might follow in his steps.
145
:He committed no sin.
146
:Neither was deceit found in his mouth.
147
:When he was reviled.
148
:He did not revile in
return when he suffered.
149
:He did not threaten, but
continued entrusting himself
150
:to him who judges justly.
151
:But why was Jesus able to endure so well?
152
:Scripture tells us that too.
153
:Hebrews 12 two look to Jesus, the
founder and perfecter of our faith,
154
:who for the joy that was set before
him, endured the cross, despising
155
:the shame, and is seated at the
right hand of the throne of God.
156
:Just like Job, we can say, I know
my redeemer lives, and at last
157
:he will stand upon the earth.
158
:As I think about suffering well and
in light of eternity, there are three
159
:friends I have the utmost respect for.
160
:All three have recently lost sons,
161
:and all three continue to serve
the Lord mightily, although none
162
:of them understand why the Lord
has allowed this unbearable pain.
163
:All of them have chosen to
stay steadfast to their savior.
164
:One helps lead the prayer team and
my homeschool group every week.
165
:She faithfully prays for
every family by name.
166
:She never minimizes another person's
struggle or elevates her own
167
:pain, but she enters in with all.
168
:And she chooses Christ even when
he asks more of her than she
169
:ever thought she had to give.
170
:Another is a pastor's wife who leads
worship at her church and though she'll
171
:honestly admit that there are some
songs that are too difficult to sing,
172
:yet she can continues to lead her
congregation and honesty and praise.
173
:Another, barely took a pause after
her son's passing and has led
174
:Entrusted with the child's heart
groups to minister to other parents.
175
:She also teaches preschool and constantly
looks for ways to encourage and bless
176
:the kids and parents around her.
177
:None of us wants to experience what
they have, but I do find comfort
178
:that as they've pressed into Jesus,
he has helped them stand for him.
179
:I know some of these lessons feel very
heavy with Job but I hope we're pointed
180
:to persevering well for the Lord.
181
:What is the Lord called
you to in this season?
182
:Are you persevering in the
mundane and feeling unseen,?
183
:Are you treading waters wherever
you're at, keep your eyes on Jesus.
184
:He lives and he sees you.
185
:Lord Jesus, as we ponder this
difficult topic of suffering.
186
:Once again, we thank you that you are our
perfect example on this earth, that in
187
:every situation you were without sin and
you understand the difficulties we face.
188
:Thank you that you came to
dwell with us and took on flesh.
189
:So that when we are struggling and
weak, we know that we have a high priest
190
:who sympathizes with our weaknesses,
191
:help us to not promise to our children
that when we obey, everything will go
192
:right on this earth, but may we display
for them and embrace in our own lives that
193
:walking with you and having your presence
is the greatest gift we could imagine.
194
:And if there's anyone that hasn't made
this commitment, pray with me right
195
:now, Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner.
196
:I know there is nothing that I
can do to solve this problem.
197
:I thank you that you died on the
cross defeating sin and restoring
198
:my relationship to the father.
199
:I embrace your sacrifice on my
behalf, and I choose to live for you.
200
:It's in your mighty name, we pray Jesus.
201
:Amen.
