In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Parshat Ki Tavo and orients to a single word that carries layers of spiritual technology.
Hasket. Usually translated as “hearken” or “take heed” — a doubling of the command to listen. But the Midrash reads it differently. Has: become silent. Katu: shatter. Two medicines hidden in one word. The path to becoming a people, to truly hearing the words of Torah, to entering the land — it begins here.
Drawing on the Midrash, the story of Rabbi Akiva, and the medicine of Elul, Yocheved traces two kinds of silence — the has that arises from within, and the shtok that comes from beyond — and what each one prepares us for. The shofar as amniotic fluid. The shattering as birth. The month of Elul as the space where silence and shattering learn to live together.
Has. Then katu. Silence first. Then something breaks. And from the breaking — an am. A people. A self that can finally hear.
