A recent YouGov poll shows that folks think a whopping 20% of the country is Muslim when it’s actually just 1%. We even think 10% of households are raking in over a million bucks, but nope, it’s still just 1%. And get this—most people believe 40% of Americans are Black, while the real number is around 12%. It’s like we’re living in our own little bubbles, overestimating small groups and totally missing the bigger picture. So, let’s unpack why we tend to see the world through such a skewed lens and what that means for us.

Much of what Americans believe about America is bloated, warped, stretched like a funhouse mirror.

A YouGov poll found that Americans think 20% of the country is Muslim.

It's 1%.

They guess 10% of households make over a million dollars.

It's one again, they think 40% of Americans are black.

It's actually 12%, including myself.

We even overestimated the percentage of the population that lives in Texas.

We guessed 22%.

It's nine.

Americans live inside their heads.

We overestimate small groups and underestimate big ones.

Psychologists call this uncertainty based rescaling.

I call it a symptom of living in bubbles online and in real life.
