Shownotes

Most midlife women aren't stuck on desire. They know what they want. They've known for a while. What they're stuck on is permission. The belief that someone else needs to say yes before they're allowed to begin.

This episode is built around a framework called the Permission Stack. Four layers: desire, permission, action, and identity. Most women skip the first two and wonder why nothing moves.

You'll also hear why lived experience is intellectual capital. Not a consolation prize for not having a formal credential. Decades of pattern recognition, problem-solving, and managing complexity. What feels obvious to you may be life-changing for someone else.

And you'll hear about the income project concept. Not a business plan. Not a funnel. Something smaller and more honest. A doorway into more ownership and more evidence that you can create real value from who you are right now.

Three questions to sit with this week:

  • What's the quiet idea you keep coming back to?
  • What do you already know that someone else is still trying to figure out?
  • What's one small way you could package that wisdom, not perfectly, just first?

Take the Permission Audit: audit.kileysuarez.com Free. Twelve minutes. Ten questions that show you exactly where the permission trap has been running your decisions about what's next.

Transcripts

Speaker A:

You have built a good life, maybe a really good one.

Speaker A:

You have handled the career, the family, the responsibilities, the logistics, the people, and the things no one else even sees.

Speaker A:

You have probably been very good at being reliable, very good at being needed, and very good at doing what had to be done.

Speaker A:

And still there may be this quiet thing underneath it all, this little voice that says, I want something that is mine.

Speaker A:

And not because you're ungrateful, and not because your life is wrong, and not because you need to blow everything up, but because there is a part of you that wants to create, earn, earn, lead, decide and build from who you are now.

Speaker A:

So here we are.

Speaker A:

Welcome to the Joy Shift.

Speaker A:

I'm Kylie Suarez, and this is the space for women in midlife who are now standing at the edge of what's next.

Speaker A:

And not because everything is broken, but because something inside of them is ready to expand.

Speaker A:

Make sure you hit, follow or subscribe wherever you're listening, because this is the kind of a conversation we're going to keep on having here.

Speaker A:

Before I go anywhere else today, I want to give you the framework we're going to work through so you can hold it as we go.

Speaker A:

It's called the permission stack.

Speaker A:

It consists of four layers.

Speaker A:

Desire, permission, action, and identity.

Speaker A:

And here's the thing I want you to understand before we go deeper.

Speaker A:

Most women I know are not actually stuck at desire.

Speaker A:

They know what they want.

Speaker A:

They have known for a while.

Speaker A:

And what they're stuck on is permission, the belief that someone else needs to say, yes, you're ready before they're allowed to begin.

Speaker A:

That is what this episode is about.

Speaker A:

Not income as hustle and not income as pressure.

Speaker A:

Not some Internet version of success, Income as ownership, and the identity shift that makes it possible.

Speaker A:

I'm going to tell you a story first, because this one is personal.

Speaker A:

When I first started moving toward coaching, I kept looking for the next certification, the next training, the next credential, the next outside marker that would finally make me feel legitimate.

Speaker A:

And on paper, that almost made sense.

Speaker A:

I'm a person who respects expertise, and I believe in being trained.

Speaker A:

I believe in doing excellent work, and I believe in taking the responsibility of serving other people seriously.

Speaker A:

But if I'm being really honest, there was something else happening underneath that search.

Speaker A:

I was not only looking for education, I was looking for permission.

Speaker A:

I wanted someone else to tell me, okay, now you're ready.

Speaker A:

Now you're allowed.

Speaker A:

Now you're equipped.

Speaker A:

Now you can help.

Speaker A:

And the tricky part is the There is always another certification available, always another book, always Another program, always another person who seems more polished, more experienced and more official and more ready.

Speaker A:

So if you're waiting for the moment when no one could possibly question your right to begin, you may actually wait forever.

Speaker A:

At some point, I had to ask myself a question that changed everything.

Speaker A:

Am I continuing to learn because I want to serve better?

Speaker A:

Or.

Speaker A:

Or am I continuing to learn because I'm afraid to be seen serving?

Speaker A:

That question changed things for me because yes, I believe in training, and yes, I believe in skill, and yes, I believe in staying humble and continuing to grow.

Speaker A:

But I also had to recognize that I was not starting from nothing.

Speaker A:

I had lived a life, I had built things, I had led.

Speaker A:

I had made hard decisions and still do.

Speaker A:

I had walked through my own reinventions and I had supported other people in theirs.

Speaker A:

And I had developed a way of seeing patterns and asking questions and helping other women come back to themselves.

Speaker A:

And at some point I had to stop treating my own wisdom like it was inadmissible evidence.

Speaker A:

That was the identity shift.

Speaker A:

Not from unqualified to qualified or from waiting to owning.

Speaker A:

From who am I to do this?

Speaker A:

To who am I not to offer what I know?

Speaker A:

Here's what I want you to understand about where you're standing right now.

Speaker A:

You're not starting from scratch.

Speaker A:

You are starting with decades of pattern recognition, decades of lived experience, decades of solving problems, decades of managing people, systems, emotions, households, money change, loss, reinvention, disappointment and responsibility.

Speaker A:

And that is not nothing.

Speaker A:

That's a whole lot of something.

Speaker A:

That is intellectual capital, emotional capital, and it's also practical wisdom all combined.

Speaker A:

The problem is that a lot of women discount what they know because it came naturally or because they learned it through life instead of through a formal certification.

Speaker A:

We've been told quietly and persistently that lived experience doesn't count the same way that credentials do.

Speaker A:

And that's wrong.

Speaker A:

It's wrong that the most experienced women in any room are still the ones asking whether they're allowed to be in it.

Speaker A:

It's also wrong that wisdom earned through decades of real work gets treated as less legitimate than certificate someone printed last month.

Speaker A:

And it's wrong that you're sitting on something someone else is still desperately trying to figure out and you haven't said a word about it.

Speaker A:

What feels obvious to you may be life changing for someone else.

Speaker A:

And that is where an income project begins.

Speaker A:

Not with a logo and not with a funnel, or not with a brand photo shoot and a whole rehab with the answer to this question.

Speaker A:

What do I already know that someone else is still trying to figure out.

Speaker A:

I also wanted to say something about the cost of waiting.

Speaker A:

Because I know a lot of women who have been circling their quiet idea for two years, three years, five years.

Speaker A:

And every year they tell themselves, once I feel more ready, once the timing is cleaner, once the kids are a little older, once I have more clarity, and here's the honest truth.

Speaker A:

Five years from now, the idea will still be there and you'll still be waiting.

Speaker A:

And the only thing that will have changed is how long the waiting has been.

Speaker A:

And I'm not saying that to scare you.

Speaker A:

I'm saying it because you already know it's true.

Speaker A:

And you deserve someone who will say it out loud.

Speaker A:

The woman who is ready in not some future, more prepared version of you.

Speaker A:

She's the one who decides to begin.

Speaker A:

Now let's talk about why beginning can feel so unsettling.

Speaker A:

Because I don't think the scariest part is making the offer.

Speaker A:

I think the scariest part is being seen making the offer.

Speaker A:

And there's a difference.

Speaker A:

See, it's one thing to have the idea in your journal, in your notes app, in your head while you're driving or you're folding laundry.

Speaker A:

It's another completely different thing.

Speaker A:

To say it out loud, I'm creating this.

Speaker A:

I can help with this.

Speaker A:

Here's what I offer, here's what it costs.

Speaker A:

Here's why it matters.

Speaker A:

That visibility can wake up every old story.

Speaker A:

Like, don't be too much.

Speaker A:

Don't want too much.

Speaker A:

Don't inconvenience anyone.

Speaker A:

Don't look foolish.

Speaker A:

Don't act like you're special.

Speaker A:

And for a lot of women, especially women who have spent decades being responsible, likable, useful, and steady, visibility can feel like a violation of the role that they've been rewarded for playing.

Speaker A:

Now, this is where the Income project becomes an identity project.

Speaker A:

You're not just learning how to sell something.

Speaker A:

You're learning how to tolerate being seen as someone who wants, creates, asks, earns, and owns.

Speaker A:

That's bigger than any business plan.

Speaker A:

And it's exactly why the permission stack matters.

Speaker A:

So let's go back to it.

Speaker A:

Four layers, and most women skip the first two entirely.

Speaker A:

And the first layer is called desire.

Speaker A:

Most women are not actually stuck here.

Speaker A:

They know what they want.

Speaker A:

Maybe they haven't admitted it fully, but they know there's a little idea that keeps tapping them on the shoulder.

Speaker A:

A project, a service, a book, a workshop, a consulting offer, a digital guide, a room they want to actually be in, a conversation that they want to lead.

Speaker A:

The desire is there.

Speaker A:

The Second layer is permission.

Speaker A:

This is where most women get stuck.

Speaker A:

They're waiting for someone to say, yes, you're ready, yes, you're qualified, yes, this makes sense, yes, it will work.

Speaker A:

And that permission may never come from the outside.

Speaker A:

Or worse, you get permission from one person and criticism from another and you're right back in the loop again.

Speaker A:

So that's the permission trap.

Speaker A:

Showing up at a new layer.

Speaker A:

Not just I need someone to approve my life, but I need someone to approve my business idea before I let myself begin.

Speaker A:

And at some point, the permission has to come from you.

Speaker A:

The third layer is action.

Speaker A:

And not massive action.

Speaker A:

Not quit your job action, not announce your entire new identity to the Internet action, just the next honest action.

Speaker A:

Like write the outline, name the offer, tell one trusted person, create the first page, record the first episode, send the first email, invite the first conversation, and then the fourth layer and final is identity.

Speaker A:

And this catches up.

Speaker A:

You don't become the woman who creates income by thinking about creating income.

Speaker A:

You become her by taking small actions until your own sense of self catches up and says, oh, this is who we are now.

Speaker A:

And here's what I want you to know about the business itself.

Speaker A:

You don't need to build an empire.

Speaker A:

You don't need a funnel, a logo, a 40 page business plan, a brand photo shoot, a perfect website, and a five year vision before you begin.

Speaker A:

You can start with an income prompt project.

Speaker A:

That phrase matters because it's smaller, it's more honest, and it's less loaded.

Speaker A:

An income project might be a paid workshop, a consulting session, a small coaching package, a digital workbook, a private podcast, a paid newsletter, a local event, a simple service based on something you already know how to do.

Speaker A:

It doesn't have to become your whole life.

Speaker A:

It can simply be a doorway.

Speaker A:

A doorway into more ownership, more confidence and more clarity and even more agency.

Speaker A:

More evidence that you can create real value from who you are right now.

Speaker A:

So here's what I want you to sit with this week.

Speaker A:

Three questions and that's it.

Speaker A:

What is the quiet idea I keep coming back to?

Speaker A:

Not the most impressive idea, not the most scalable idea.

Speaker A:

And not the idea that would look good or not the idea that would look best on the Internet.

Speaker A:

The honest one.

Speaker A:

The one that keeps returning.

Speaker A:

What do I already know that someone else is still trying to figure out?

Speaker A:

And what is one small way I could package that wisdom?

Speaker A:

Not forever, not perfectly, just first.

Speaker A:

Because the beginning doesn't need to prove the whole future.

Speaker A:

The beginning only needs to begin.

Speaker A:

So when you do begin, not if when here's what changes.

Speaker A:

You change how you see yourself.

Speaker A:

You change how you make decisions.

Speaker A:

You change what you tolerate.

Speaker A:

You change what you say yes to.

Speaker A:

You change what you no longer need to explain.

Speaker A:

And most importantly, you start to trust yourself in a new way.

Speaker A:

Not because someone gave you permission.

Speaker A:

Because you finally stopped waiting for it.

Speaker A:

If this episode stirred something in you, if there's a quiet idea you've been sitting on, circling around or secretly hoping someone would give you permission to pursue, I built something specific for this.

Speaker A:

It's called the Permission Audit.

Speaker A:

It's free, it takes about 12 minutes, and it's 10 questions that will show you exactly where the Permission Trap has been, showing up and running your decisions about your next chapter.

Speaker A:

So go do it right now.

Speaker A:

Audit.kyliessuarez.com I'll link it in the show notes too.

Speaker A:

And if after taking it, you want to talk through what you're building, that link is there.

Speaker A:

Make sure you're following or subscribed to the Joy Shift, because this is the conversation we're going to keep having about identity, reinvention, self trust, and building what's next without burning down what already already matters.

Speaker A:

I'm Kylie Suarez and I'm so glad you're here.
