Shownotes

In this episode Adrian Cartwright shares his knowledge and experience of working with expats to manage their finances. As a Wealth Consultant with a global client based Adrian uses his down to earth approach to talk about some of the simple yet difficult steps expats should be taking to manage their finances.

He has a clear message - don't keep up with the Jones, budget and remember that as an expat, the onus is on you to manage your own finances.

Adrian can be contacted via his website and LinkedIn. His website has a lot of information available for expats and I encourage you to take a look.

[00:03:50] It's about developing a financial plan for somebody to perhaps repatriate, um, back to, back to the UK or whatever.

Kate (Podcast host): Yeah. Okay. So I'm hearing you say it's, it is difficult to talk generically, and from that I would gather that when you work with people, you're looking very much at their individual situations and their situations as a household and as a couple.

Adrian (Guest): It's obviously not right, otherwise nobody, you know, it wouldn't happen, but, but, um, but in theory it's pretty simple, isn't it? To say, you know, live within your means. Of course, in practice it's not because, you know, lots of people have credit card debt and personal loans, all the rest of it.

Adrian (Guest): Yeah. Yeah, for sure. I mean, perhaps in Dubai, the kind of keeping up with the Joneses thing might be a little bit more in your faces in some areas of the world.

is there anything like from [:

[:

Adrian (Guest): Yeah, I guess that, um, those things lead, lead on to other things, so, so when you're an expat, well, I, again, I, I'm only speaking about this, this part of the world.

Adrian (Guest): Hopefully.

Kate (Podcast host): Yeah, no, it is great, and I saw video that you were referring to there as well. Um, and it's Adrian-cartwright.com and I'll put that in the show notes as well.

[:

Adrian (Guest): Yeah, yeah. Take care of the things that are obvious and really take care of them is not a bad, bad sort of statement. Yeah. As I said, it's of those things that when, when you, not an expat…

They, they might be able to say, yeah, move your, That you accumulated in, in Spain with the company, you can put it here and we can put some kinda wrap around it so that you can do X, Y, Z, but, but they're not gonna make it a sort of, uh, a personal thing. And, and as I said at the, the beginning, it's pretty [00:19:00] difficult to be generic, uh, about, about the topic because every family is different.

Kate (Podcast host): Yeah. Then you're a relationship coach all of a sudden.

Adrian (Guest): Um, it's, it's, for me, it's just, yeah. The plan of, at that point you said, okay, well we need to, you know, maintain some level of flexibility then, and, and that's fine, let’s find the right product to achieve that.

[:

Kate (Podcast host): Adrian, thank you so much for speaking with us today, and having listened to you and having been an expat for a few years where we've not been very savvy like this, go and speak to Adrian!

Or wherever you're, I suppose, I mean, I was gonna say you've got clients globally, not just in Dubai, is that right?

grew and now yeah, it's, uh, [:

[:

Adrian (Guest): Yeah, absolutely. And don't speak to one, I mean there's a couple of reasons for that. One, generally the relationship's quite long.

Kate (Podcast host): Yeah. Lovely. Thank you so much, Adrian.

Adrian (Guest): No worries at all.
