In the first episode of Surfing Your Edge, Kristine Goad shares the experiences that shaped her life, her coaching philosophy, and the creation of this podcast.
From years of searching for where she fit to realizing that she was never meant to squeeze herself into someone else’s box, Kristine explores what she learned by embracing uncertainty and creating a life and business that feel more fully her own.
She reflects on bicycling across America, leaving behind the belief that she needed to feel ready before beginning, and discovering that a path is made by walking.
Whether you’re navigating a major transition, considering something that scares you, or wondering what might be possible next, this episode is an invitation to begin surfing your own edge.

The Shift Beneath the Words:
Through Surfing Your Edge, Kristine invites listeners into honest conversations about fear, self-trust, reinvention, curiosity, and the experiments that help us create lives that feel more fully our own—while making a positive impact in our own corner of the world.
About the Host:
Kristine Goad is endlessly curious about the moment when “I could never” becomes “What if I tried?” As the Surfing Your Edge Coach, her work centers on transforming our relationship with fear, trusting ourselves more deeply, and creating lives that feel bigger, bolder, and more fully our own. Her approach blends coaching, mental fitness, adventure, experimentation, and wonder—shaped by a life that has included bicycling across America, writing a memoir, building a business, and taking surf lessons to overcome her fear of open water in her late 40s. She is less interested in fearless living than in what becomes possible when we get curious about the things that scare us.

Your travels have brought you to the Surfing Your Edge podcast,
Speaker:where we explore what it takes to create the bigger, bolder,
Speaker:badass life you know you were born for.
Speaker:Not a life that simply looks good on paper,
Speaker:and not another spin on the self-help hamster wheel.
Speaker:If you're ready for more joy, more peace, and more contribution,
Speaker:you're in the right place.
Speaker:I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
Speaker:Let's get surfing.
Speaker:Welcome to the Surfing Your Edge podcast.
Speaker:I'm Kristine Goad, your Surfing Your Edge coach,
Speaker:and this is episode one, which is a little terrifying.
Speaker:But that is a little bit about why we're here, right?
Speaker:We are here to surf your edge.
Speaker:So let me jump right in and talk about what I mean when I say
Speaker:surfing your edge.
Speaker:Your edge is that place where it's the place between where you are
Speaker:and what's next.
Speaker:It's the place where reality meets possibility.
Speaker:It's the place where you are out on the edge of your comfort zone,
Speaker:and you're maybe staying there a little longer than you want to,
Speaker:because you know that when you do that, your comfort zone expands.
Speaker:So that's what we're talking about when we're talking about surfing your
Speaker:edge. And we're not talking about looking cool.
Speaker:We're not talking about, you know, being macho.
Speaker:We're not none of the bro stuff.
Speaker:This is a bro-free zone.
Speaker:But this is about living your bigger, bolder,
Speaker:badass life. And what I mean by badass,
Speaker:so that you don't run screaming away thinking, oh, that's not me.
Speaker:Badass means being unapologetically yourself.
Speaker:You are here on this planet to become the fullest expression of who you were
Speaker:born to be. When you do that, you don't apologize for yourself.
Speaker:You just keep exploring that edge and growing and leaning in and asking
Speaker:what more can I do? What more can I contribute?
Speaker:What more joy and peace and love can I experience?
Speaker:So that is the journey you've joined.
Speaker:Aren't you so glad you showed up here?
Speaker:I'm really glad you showed up here.
Speaker:All right. So as we've said, this is episode one.
Speaker:And episode one is coming much sooner than I thought it would.
Speaker:I basically started this podcast on a whim because a friend of mine came and
Speaker:said, Hey, it's time.
Speaker:And she had a very short window in which I could jump in and she would
Speaker:support me on this. So I had to jump in before I was ready.
Speaker:And again,
Speaker:that is one of the things we're going to talk about on this podcast.
Speaker:If you wait until you're ready, you've waited too long.
Speaker:So here I am surfing my edge right in front of you,
Speaker:right alongside you and creating something brand new.
Speaker:Well, it's brand new. It's bigger than what it was before.
Speaker:I have done a surfing your edge live show intermittently on Facebook for many
Speaker:years, and I loved that,
Speaker:but this is me finally stepping into the spotlight and asking for a bigger
Speaker:stage or creating my own bigger stage because you don't have to ask,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So part of this came about because someone invited me to step in and I said,
Speaker:yes,
Speaker:but it's also the right time for this podcast because the world is in a place
Speaker:of continual flux.
Speaker:And a lot of us are waiting for normal to come back.
Speaker:And I really don't believe normal is coming back.
Speaker:I think the new normal is this continually shifting sands and this game of
Speaker:look over here. No, look over here. Oh, look over here.
Speaker:And then you don't ever get to feel like you're safe. Right?
Speaker:And I've seen so many beautiful, amazing,
Speaker:talented people who are already struggling with that self doubt that we all
Speaker:have.
Speaker:They're being impacted even more greatly right now because the world wants
Speaker:them to feel unsafe and unsteady so that the people,
Speaker:the powers that be don't have to worry about you, right?
Speaker:If you're over here spinning in circles, you're not a threat, right?
Speaker:So you just go spin is what they want you to believe.
Speaker:And I'm here to say, no, I'm taking a stand for you.
Speaker:And if there were ever a time for you to become the fullest expression of who
Speaker:you are, this is the time we aren't waiting for other people to come in and
Speaker:solve the world's problems. We are, we are the solution, right?
Speaker:We may not have any clue how we're going to do what we need to do,
Speaker:but the world needs us right now and we need you.
Speaker:So that's, that's why, right?
Speaker:That's why we're surfing our edge now and not waiting for someday,
Speaker:not waiting for things to get back to normal.
Speaker:This is your time. You, you were born for this. Okay?
Speaker:This is okay. I wasn't even planning to go here, but let's just go here.
Speaker:You were born for this.
Speaker:You've spent your entire life becoming who you are,
Speaker:gaining all of your skills and all of your resources and your world
Speaker:perspective, developing your personality and your,
Speaker:your sense of humor and whatever other life skills you have.
Speaker:They've all been preparing you for this moment.
Speaker:So it is time for you to surf your edge and I will be a
Speaker:gentle guide alongside you.
Speaker:And I promise I don't have all of the answers,
Speaker:but I love asking the questions and I love talking to people about what
Speaker:their answers might be.
Speaker:So I hope to talk to you at some point and hear what you have to say,
Speaker:where this comes from. Surfing your edge is,
Speaker:is I think I spent a lot of my childhood afraid,
Speaker:right? I wanted to look smart.
Speaker:I wanted to be the good girl. I wanted to stay inside the lines.
Speaker:I wanted to jump through all the hoops that everybody put in front of me.
Speaker:And I was really good at it. I jumped through hoops and jumped through hoops.
Speaker:And at some point I realized that jumping through hoops,
Speaker:just because they were there and somebody else said, Hey,
Speaker:wouldn't it be cool if you did this?
Speaker:That wasn't necessarily the life that I was meant to have. Right.
Speaker:And I also started to realize as I, you know,
Speaker:graduated from college and started to find my way in the adult world,
Speaker:I started to find that I didn't fit into anybody's boxes, right? I,
Speaker:I went on a cross country bike trip when I was 29 years old because I wanted
Speaker:to hear the universe whisper in my ear.
Speaker:This is the box you belong to. You know,
Speaker:when you finish this bike ride in August,
Speaker:you go home and you find this company and you apply for this position.
Speaker:And that is where all of your skills and all of your talents and all of your
Speaker:interests belong. That is the box that was created for you.
Speaker:And I never heard that. I didn't hear that.
Speaker:What I kept hearing was BU and I'm like,
Speaker:what does that mean? I had no idea what BU meant.
Speaker:And basically I learned that I'd been asking the wrong question for,
Speaker:for the whole bike ride.
Speaker:I was asking what box do I belong in rather than how do I live my most
Speaker:authentic life? Right. If you ask what box do you belong in?
Speaker:And the answer is BU.
Speaker:If you ask, how do I live my most authentic life?
Speaker:And the answer is BU. That makes sense.
Speaker:So I,
Speaker:I put myself on this path where I was asking the wrong question and I kept
Speaker:asking that question and I kept asking it and didn't realize for another
Speaker:almost two decades that I had been asking the wrong question.
Speaker:And I realized that I have to create my own box, right?
Speaker:There is no box that was created that has all of that will let me be my fullest
Speaker:self. Nobody else has created that box.
Speaker:I have to create my own platform kind of like I'm doing with this podcast,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:So I'm here to help you also or invite you.
Speaker:I'm here to invite you to create your own platform and experience,
Speaker:explore what your U shaped environment feels like.
Speaker:It doesn't have to be a box.
Speaker:And why this matters to me is why it matters to me.
Speaker:Not only that I get to be the most full expression of who I came to this planet
Speaker:to be, but why it matters to me that you also get that experience is because I
Speaker:believe the universe is learning about itself through us,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:It created you as a specific lens on the world on itself.
Speaker:And in order for it to get a full
Speaker:understanding of what it is that is happening in your part of the universe,
Speaker:it needs you to fully express who you are,
Speaker:to fully explore, to be funny or silly,
Speaker:to make mistakes, to learn, to grow,
Speaker:to follow your passion regardless of what the world,
Speaker:what the world seems to be saying.
Speaker:The universe, this is what the universe is asking of you.
Speaker:That I believe is your true purpose on this planet is just to be the most you
Speaker:you can be because as you've heard before, there is only one you.
Speaker:There will never be another you and what you do matters.
Speaker:Who you are matters.
Speaker:What matters to you matters.
Speaker:So that's why this work matters to me because we need you.
Speaker:The world needs you right now.
Speaker:As we've already discussed, we are in flux.
Speaker:Things are changing all the time and we need you
Speaker:to help us make the world a better place.
Speaker:One little tiny step at a time in your own little world, right?
Speaker:I'm not asking too much yet.
Speaker:I might ask more later, but for right now,
Speaker:we're just taking tiny little steps forward into what helps you explore your
Speaker:corner of the world a little more fully.
Speaker:So what I hope for this podcast is that you will come along
Speaker:for some inspiration, maybe some laughs,
Speaker:and maybe it will pique your curiosity a little bit and inspire you to try
Speaker:some small experiments. Curiosity and experimentation, again,
Speaker:are part of what we're going to be talking about as this podcast unrolls.
Speaker:So I'm really hoping that you'll find your place where you are seen,
Speaker:where who you are feels like enough,
Speaker:maybe even more than enough because that's what's really the truth.
Speaker:And I'm really just hoping that we all kind of make our own little corners
Speaker:of the world more interesting and more welcoming and more solution focused
Speaker:rather than the world is falling apart focused.
Speaker:So again, I don't know exactly where we're going with this podcast.
Speaker:This is episode number one and I have some ideas, but I have no real clue.
Speaker:And okay, again, I wasn't planning to talk about this,
Speaker:but we'll talk about it now.
Speaker:Earlier when we were talking about don't wait until you're ready,
Speaker:a lot of times we think we have to have the whole map before we can start out
Speaker:on our journey, right? And if you wait until you've got the whole map,
Speaker:how did anybody ever discover the world, right?
Speaker:You've got to go make your own map.
Speaker:If you've got the map in front of you, chances are someone else drew it
Speaker:and it's not really yours.
Speaker:So again, this is me walking my talk and taking that first step
Speaker:without really knowing exactly where I'm going.
Speaker:But the phrase that saved me when I was stuck in this rut for 10 years
Speaker:of trying to figure out how to stop being someone else's employee
Speaker:and start doing what I wanted to in the world.
Speaker:One of the things that got me finally unstuck was hearing the phrase,
Speaker:a path is made by walking.
Speaker:So here we are, we're taking that first step and then we're going to look around
Speaker:and we're going to figure out what the next step is.
Speaker:And then we'll figure out what the next step is.
Speaker:And eventually we'll be able to turn around behind us and see where we've come
Speaker:and see the path that we've built.
Speaker:But we don't necessarily know where we're going or how we're going to get there.
Speaker:So if that sounds exciting, I hope you will come along with me
Speaker:and play and surf your edge and enjoy the adventure.
Speaker:Thank you for surfing your edge with me on your way to becoming
Speaker:your bigger, bolder, badass self.
