Yes, you need to be prepared, but don't overdo it!

Just like swimming, you jump in, flounder around, begin to doggie paddle, check out your surroundings and what you need. You don't backstroke right away. You might get swimming lessons.

Jump in, get started, get help and get your barrings and grow your skills. The longer you hold yourself back, the less likely you will jump in. The more people you see passing you by jumping, the more likely you begin to compare yourself with self-doubt.

Go for it! Get help and get the support and help you need to succeed!
