In this episode of "A Changed Mind", our host, David Bayer, explores how time is a measurement of change rather than an absolute force, drawing on physics, neuroscience, and spiritual wisdom. David argues that our struggle with time stems from living outside the present moment.
David offers four key distinctions to align with the power of timing: separating urgent from important, leveraging Parkinson's law, trusting life's plan, and practicing harmony over hustle.

Mentioned in this episode:
Give me less than 10 minutes, and I'll transform your relationship with time. If there's one thing almost everyone says, it's this. I don't have enough time. There aren't enough hours in the day. The clock is always running. We feel rushed behind, like time is slipping away. But here's the thing. Time, the way we think about it, doesn't actually exist. Yes, we have clocks. Yes, we have calendars. But clocks don't measure some invisible force called time. They measure change. And once you understand that, you realize that the precious resource you're wanting more of isn't actually time. It's timing. Because when you learn to relax into the present, timing takes over, and life starts lining things up in ways that no amount of time could ever accomplish. That's what I want to share with you in the next 10 minutes. Of a changed Mind. Welcome to A Changed Mind, a journey into the topics that matter to you most. From the neuroscience and spirituality of mindset and personal growth, to groundbreaking strategies for health, wealth, and relationships, to open and honest conversations about pressing global issues such as the environment, censorship, corporate capture, and democracy. Each and every episode reminds us of the certainty of the goodness of the future and provides the teachings, tools, and timeless wisdom inspiring you to create real, lasting change in your life and in the world. If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity, and doom and gloom that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy, and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place. Welcome to A Changed Mind. All right, guys, let's get into this. You know, we talk about seconds, minutes, and years like they're real things. But let's look at what those measurements actually are. So a day is actually the measurement of the time it takes for Earth to spin around its axis. A year is one trip around the sun. And you may not know this, but a second is defined by scientists as 9,192,000,000 vibrations of a cesium atom. So notice the pattern. These aren't slices of time floating in the universe. They're ways of measuring change. If nothing in the universe moved or changed, if the Earth didn't spin, if atoms didn't vibrate, there'd be no way to measure time. So time is not a thing. It's a story we've layered on top of change to help us organize life. So when we say time is running out, what we really mean is, I don't trust the changes I want will happen. Fast enough. Now, physics takes this one step further. Einstein showed us that time isn't fixed. It's relative. If you're moving very fast, close to the speed of light, time for you slows down compared to someone standing still. This is called time dilation. And this isn't science fiction. It's fact. Astronauts in orbit age slightly slower than people on Earth because they're moving faster and experiencing weaker gravity. And here's how real this gets. Did you know that GPS satellites wouldn't work if engineers didn't correct for relativity? Without adjustments, they'd be off by miles every single day because time is literally flowing differently for them than for us. So physics proves time isn't an absolute container. We're all moving through together. It bends. It flexes. It depends on perspective. And so now let's go inside the human mind. Neuroscience shows that your brain doesn't directly experience time. It constructs it. Your past isn't stored like a movie you replay every time you remember. Your brain reconstructs the event, filling in gaps with imagination, which means the past only lives as a story that your brain is telling you in the only moment that actually exists, which is right now. And your future isn't waiting out there. It's a simulation. It's a prediction your brain runs based on memory and pattern. So that means the past and the future don't exist in reality. They exist only in thought. The only moment you ever actually experience is now. The mystical teacher Eckhart Tolle wrote a bestselling book called the Power of Now. And he says the insanity of the human condition is, is that most of us spend most of our lives trying to get away from the present moment to get somewhere else in the future, when in reality, the present is all there is. This, by the way, is why time feels elastic. So when you're anxious, 10 minutes feels like forever. And when you're in joy or flow, hours disappear.
The clock didn't change. Your brain's construction of time did. So if the only reality is now, what are we really saying when we complain about not having enough time? We're saying, I'm caught between memories and predictions, and I'm not living in the present. And every wisdom tradition points to the same truth. In fact, scripture says, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. What that means is the past is gone, the future hasn't arrived, and the only place life happens is right here, right now. And that doesn't mean don't plan it Means hold your plan lightly, because the only place you'll ever execute anything is in the present. And I'm telling you, as somebody who worried chronically for years about the future, felt guilty about the past, realizing that this was a construct of my mind was a game changer for me. Because the challenge wasn't that I didn't have enough time, is that I was spending so little time in the present moment. The more you fight with time, rushing, stressing, fearing you don't have enough of it, the more you lose presence. And presence is the only place life is actually unfolding. So here's the breakthrough. What matters is not how much time you think you have. What matters is timing. So when you're rushed, when you're stressed, when you're living in scarcity, timing collapses. You make poor decisions, you miss opportunities, you create friction. But when you're relaxed, present and trusting, timing aligns. Better thoughts come to you. You recognize the right moment to act. Coincidences and synchronicities appear. Life starts to feel efficient, not because you have more hours, but because you're in rhythm with how things want to unfold. So think about rushing out the door when you're late. You spill your coffee, you forget your keys. You hit every red light. Stress consumed the time. But when you're calm, the lights turn green, the meeting starts late, and you walk in right on time. That's timing. So timing isn't luck. It is the natural result of being in harmony with the present. So how do you live? By timing instead of chasing time? I'm going to give you four distinctions to help you align with the power of timing. Distinction number one, distinguish urgent from important. So urgent things must be handled. Now, important often unfolds naturally important. And you can't treat everything as urgent. That's the trap. Your mind will try to make everything urgent. But does it have to be done today? And if the answer to that is no, it does not have to be done today, then take it off the urgent list and get the urgent things done first. Eventually, you'll get to the important things, but in order to experience presence, separate urgent from important. Number two, leverage Parkinson's law. So you ever have something simple to get done, a work project or a house project. And notice that however much time you give to do the thing, the thing will suck up all the time. That's Parkinson's law. So Parkinson's law says the more time you give something, the less efficient, that you'll do the thing and it'll suck up all the time. Well, the Opposite also works. If you give yourself less time to do something, you'll do it in a more efficient way. So if you feel like you don't have enough time, remember that time isn't real and just do the thing in the time you perceive that you have and watch it get done. Because the problem isn't that you don't have enough time, it's often that you're wasting the time you have worrying about not having enough time. Distinction number three Trust the Great plan. So a lot of times we start our day thinking we know what needs to happen, and then life has other plans. In fact, that's most days. Immediately let go of what you thought needed to happen and work with what is. So work in the present moment. Because life has a different plan and the way we waste time is resisting what is and thinking that our day should be going different than it is and that we needed to get other things done and this thing just got in the way of it. Trust the plan as it shows up and humble yourself to what is. The fourth distinction is practice harmony, not hustle. So action is necessary? Absolutely. But rushed action wastes energy. There's a lot of hustle culture out there right now. Hustle doesn't get you results, harmony does. Harmony is root cause. So harmonious action creates timing. And that's what we're after. Not time. Better thoughts, coincidences, unexpected support. You activate timing by being fully present, relaxed, aligned. This multiplies results. So let's put this together. Clocks measure change, not time. Physics shows that time is relative, not absolute. Neuroscience shows past and future exist only as thoughts in the present. And spirituality shows the only real moment is now. Which means time is an illusion and the fear of not enough time is actually irrelevant. The truth is, you can't run out of now.
You're always here. And when you're here fully, timing, not time, becomes the key to everything. Timing brings the right opportunities. Timing sharpens your decisions. Timing creates flow. Time is not the factor. Timing is. So the next time you feel rushed or pressured, like there aren't enough hours in the day, pause. Just take a deep breath and remind yourself time does not exist the way you think it does. The only reality is now. And in now, you are never late. You are never behind. You are never out of time. You are exactly where you need to be. Because life isn't about time. It's about timing. So, hey, I hope you love this episode as much as I love sharing it with you.
