Massachusetts lawmakers have approved a bill to provide employment protections for people who use marijuana. The legislation would prohibit employers from requiring drug tests for cannabis until a conditional job offer is made. Even then, employers could not refuse to hire or take adverse action against employees based on their status as a medical marijuana patient, unless the employee was impaired at work. The bill includes exceptions for safety-sensitive positions and federal employment contracts. This comes as the state is also considering measures to regulate cannabis consumption lounges and hemp-derived products. The legislation aims to protect workers' rights as the state's legal marijuana market continues to expand, with over $8 billion in adult-use sales reported as of August.

Today we are covering cannabis and obesity.
First up is Is there a role for cannabidiol in obesity, metabolic syndrome and binge eating? by Botticelli and colleagues. This review article explores the potential role of CBD in the management of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and binge eating. Key findings: CBD may have beneficial effects on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and binge eating by modulating the endocannabinoid system, reducing inflammation, and improving metabolic parameters. The article is a narrative review that summarizes the current evidence from preclinical and clinical studies on the effects of CBD in these conditions. CBD could be a promising therapeutic option for the management of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and binge eating, but further research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety. The review is limited by the heterogeneity of the available studies, the small sample sizes, and the need for more well-designed, large-scale clinical trials to confirm the findings.
Next up: Short-Term Low Dose Cannabidiol Does Not Influence Glucose Tolerance or the Gut Microbiome in Sedentary Adults with Overweight and Obesity: Pilot Study by Ewell and others. This pilot study found that short-term low-dose CBD did not influence glucose tolerance or the gut microbiome in sedentary adults with overweight and obesity. Short-term low-dose CBD did not significantly affect glucose tolerance or the gut microbiome in the study population. This was a pilot study that examined the effects of 4 weeks of low-dose CBD supplementation on glucose tolerance and the gut microbiome in sedentary adults with overweight and obesity. The findings suggest that short-term low-dose CBD may not have a significant impact on glucose metabolism or the gut microbiome in this population, though further research is needed. Keep in mind, however, the study had a small sample size and short duration, limiting the ability to detect potential effects of CBD.
And finally, Cannabis improves metabolic dysfunction and macrophage signatures in obese mice by VanderVeen and others. This study investigated the effects of cannabis with high CBD or high delta 9 THC content on metabolic dysfunction and macrophage signatures in obese mice. Cannabis with high CBD or high THC content improved metabolic dysfunction and altered macrophage signatures in obese mice. The study used obese mouse models, dietary interventions, and various biochemical and molecular analyses. The findings suggest that cannabis-based therapies may have potential for treating obesity and related metabolic disorders. The study was conducted in animal models, and further research is needed to evaluate the effects in humans.
