Shownotes

In today's episode, I discussed the pros and cons of entrepreneurs working weekends, especially when trying to achieve big goals.

Some benefits of weekend work include getting ahead faster on a short timeline, showing commitment and hustle, having focused time without distractions, and being able to respond quicker to customers.

However, there are downsides like potential burnout, lack of work-life balance, reduced creativity from no breaks, and not being sustainable long-term.

I shared tips like setting specific weekend work hours, taking at least one full day off, batching similar tasks, and making time for fun activities.

My key takeaway is that occasional weekend work can help make progress on ambitious goals, but you still need rest and balance to avoid burnout. It's important not to overdo it!

I'm looking forward to bringing you more insights from remarkable entrepreneurs in tomorrow's episode.

Speaker:

Hello and welcome back to

the Be Well, Do Well podcast.

2

:

We're going to talk a little

bit about whether or not

3

:

entrepreneurs should work weekends.

4

:

Working weekends is one of those

things that I talk to entrepreneurs

5

:

about regularly, and I find that it's

really divided halfway down the middle.

6

:

Some entrepreneurs really

value their weekends.

7

:

Maybe they have family commitments,

maybe they have hobbies, and they are

8

:

happy to take the weekend off and work

longer hours potentially during the week.

9

:

But other entrepreneurs, especially those

that don't have families or young kids,

10

:

they are the ones that typically will

work six, maybe even seven days a week.

11

:

It can be tempting to work seven days

a week to try to accomplish your goal.

12

:

But is it really necessary

to work the weekend?

13

:

Does it help you or does it harm you?

14

:

To start, let's talk about a few pros

of working weekends, especially when

15

:

you're trying to achieve a big goal.

16

:

First, the extra hours during the

weekend could really help you get

17

:

ahead in a short amount of time.

18

:

If you think about the number of

hours that you do during the week,

19

:

you're probably getting in about 30 to

maybe 40 hours of actual focus time.

20

:

Actually, let me even rewind that.

21

:

You're probably only getting about 20 to

25, maybe 30 hours of focus time a week.

22

:

If you look at your time and you think

about all the different activities that

23

:

you're doing, you're probably not spending

all of your 40 hours in your work week.

24

:

in focused and concentrated work.

25

:

So working the weekends could

actually help you get ahead and

26

:

help you achieve more in less time.

27

:

Working the weekends can also

help you with content creation.

28

:

If it's quiet and you've got

time where you can focus, you

29

:

can batch create your content.

30

:

So for example, if you're creating

new blog posts or writing emails

31

:

to your clients, you can do all of

that in a short amount of time if

32

:

you're focused on that one activity.

33

:

And the weekends can also be

helpful to help you get caught up.

34

:

There are sometimes so many things

on your plate as an entrepreneur,

35

:

and I know how difficult it is to

keep up and stay on top of things.

36

:

And the weekends sometimes are just a

great time to catch up on all of the

37

:

work that you have maybe backed up.

38

:

Now, some of the cons when it

comes to working weekends is that

39

:

it's really easy to burn out.

40

:

As entrepreneurs, we tend

to wear multiple hats.

41

:

We're often doing marketing

and we're doing sales and

42

:

we're catching up with clients.

43

:

We're also, you know, maybe even doing the

technical work in our business, creating

44

:

new landing pages and writing emails.

45

:

And when you're switching context

between one thing and the other, every

46

:

day, all day, seven days a week, it's

Well, that's a recipe for disaster.

47

:

It's a recipe to burnout.

48

:

Another thing to think

about is not yourself.

49

:

If you have family members, if

you've got children, you want to make

50

:

sure that you're spending some time

nurturing those relationships as well.

51

:

It's really easy to get lost in that

trap of working all the time and then

52

:

you forget about all the others that

are around you that are supporting

53

:

you and maybe not getting it.

54

:

The care and attention and love

that they deserve from you.

55

:

Lastly, if you think about yourself

as a creative, as a content

56

:

creator, creativity will really

suffer if you're not taking breaks.

57

:

If you don't take some time to get out

and work out, exercise, get in nature,

58

:

spend some time with friends and family,

Go out to a restaurant and just enjoy

59

:

yourself, enjoy somebody else doing

the cooking and cleaning for you.

60

:

Your creativity and problem solving skills

will suffer, and it's just not sustainable

61

:

to work seven days a week for long term.

62

:

Here are some tips that you can use

if you decide to work some weekends.

63

:

Number one, set specific

hours on the weekend.

64

:

If you're an early riser, get up in

the morning, five o'clock, six 90

65

:

minutes working on something that you're

excited about, something that fuels

66

:

you, that you're passionate about.

67

:

And use that as your time to focus.

68

:

You don't necessarily have to work

all day on the weekends and certainly

69

:

not both days of the weekend.

70

:

If you're going to work weekends, as

I mentioned, spend one day Maybe a

71

:

portion of that day working, but the

other day, take it off completely.

72

:

Disconnect, do some meditation, do

something that helps you get away from

73

:

the thoughts that are constantly swirling

in your mind about the work that you do.

74

:

Like me, I'm sure you really enjoy

your work, but it's also really

75

:

important to take a break from your

work and just allow yourself to reset.

76

:

I often joke about how meditation,

when it comes to decluttering

77

:

your mind, is like defrag was way

back in the day with Windows 3.

78

:

1 and I think maybe even with Windows

95 used to have that defrag mode

79

:

where it would go through and it

would clean up your files and it would

80

:

rearrange everything so everything

is back in their color coded order.

81

:

I love that idea, I love that

analogy, because that's exactly

82

:

what meditation will do.

83

:

It'll help you calm and clear your mind.

84

:

And the last tip, if you're going

to work weekends, is Get intense,

85

:

do whatever you need to do, but

then also be intense when you play.

86

:

Make sure that if you have a hobby,

if you have something that you're

87

:

doing outside of work, Give it the

same intensity, the same amount of

88

:

energy that you're giving your work.

89

:

And when you start your Monday, you'll

feel recharged because you gave your

90

:

intensity to other things other than work.

91

:

So I hope that gives you a few things

to think about, whether you should work

92

:

weekends at all or if you should just

work a little bit during the weekend.

93

:

But nonetheless, whatever works for

you, as long as it's healthy, as long

94

:

as it allows you to be well and do

well, that's the most important part.

95

:

Thanks again for joining me today.

96

:

Tomorrow I'm going to be sharing

an episode where I interview a

97

:

remarkable entrepreneur and talk about

their challenges, their struggles,

98

:

but also their successes and wins.

99

:

I hope you'll join me tomorrow

and I'll see you then.
