Have you tried over and over again, to change something in your character- a weakness that keeps circling back? Meet me on the trail to talk about how to change your weakness into a strength. There's something you're probably missing.
Welcome, friends, to the Creative
Spiritual Journey podcast, where Guy and
2
:I walk with you in this amazing journey of
life and share with you the things of our
3
:heart and the lessons and the blessings
that we are gathering along the way.
4
:I am so grateful that
you join me on the trail.
5
:Today, we're gonna talk
about our weakness.
6
:does that just sound so much fun?
7
:If I was to hand you a piece of
paper and say, "Write a list of
8
:your weaknesses," are you like me?
9
:And it would be maybe a notebook.
10
:seriously, let's take a dive into
understanding why we are so blinded
11
:and so troubled by our weaknesses.
12
:Recently upon the return of our
mission, I was called to serve
13
:as the Relief Society president.
14
:my first thought was, "Uh-uh, not me."
15
:But then grace intervened and I said yes.
16
:But since then, I have felt like my
weaknesses, my inability to organize,
17
:my squirrels running in my mind, and
my oh shinies, and procrastination, and
18
:worrying about what to say, and after
I've said it, worrying that I said
19
:the wrong thing, And my yard is full
of weeds, my home is full of clutter.
20
:I forget things.
21
:I feel overwhelmed, having to ask to
come into people's home and minister and
22
:deal with some heavy, heavy things that
I feel inadequate for, to say the least.
23
:So weaknesses is another
word for our humanness.
24
:It's messy.
25
:It's this natural man.
26
:Fear of what others think about
us, fear of failure or rejection,
27
:jealousy, um, thinking someone's
better than us or thinking
28
:someone's less than us, it is pride.
29
:It is so normal.
30
:We all have weakness.
31
:So the other day, I had to
teach with the elders quorum
32
:president a fifth Sunday lesson.
33
:And I had prepared, and I had toiled
and worried about what to say and how
34
:to say it, and I woke that morning, and
in tears, I told my husband, "I do not
35
:want to be Relief Society president.
36
:God chose the wrong person."
37
:It reminded me of a story of a
girl who goes to her mother And she
38
:cries, "I don't wanna go to school.
39
:the kids might be mean to me.
40
:I might forget.
41
:what I wanna say, and it just is too hard.
42
:I just don't want to go to school today."
43
:And the mother said to her, "But
darling, you are the teacher,
44
:and you have to go to school."
45
:So here I was.
46
:I had to show up as the
Relief Society president.
47
:and teach the fifth Sunday lesson.
48
:As bad as I'd love to be just the person
on the back row that doesn't say a
49
:word and can just sit and enjoy or sit
and criticize whatever it is that they
50
:are doing or you think they are doing.
51
:I just didn't wanna be
in the spotlight anymore.
52
:In Ether 12 in the Book of Mormon,
the Lord assures us that if we
53
:humble ourselves before Him, He can
help us overcome this natural man.
54
:He says, "If any man come unto me, I
will show unto them their weakness.
55
:I give unto men weakness
that they may be humble.
56
:And my grace is sufficient for all
men that humble themselves before me.
57
:For if they humble themselves before me
and have faith in me, then I will make
58
:weak things become strong unto them."
59
:Do you love that?
60
:Notice that it's weakness, not weaknesses.
61
:It is just one thing, the natural
man, the humanness of us But I wanna
62
:point something out that I am missing.
63
:Maybe you too are missing this.
64
:"My grace is sufficient."
65
:What does the word sufficient mean?
66
:Sufficient is enough.
67
:meeting the need of what we're in need of.
68
:It's just like Christ meeting us right
where we are with sufficient grace.
69
:So what is grace?
70
:In the Bible dictionary, it says, "Grace,
the main idea of the word is divine means
71
:of help or strength given through the
bounteous mercy and love of Jesus Christ."
72
:Through this love of Jesus Christ, we
receive strength and assistance to do
73
:good works that otherwise we would not be
able to maintain if left to our own means.
74
:So this grace is an enabling power
that allows you and I to lay hold upon
75
:eternal life and all the great gifts
that our Father in heaven and our
76
:Savior are pouring down on, upon us.
77
:Divine grace is needed by every soul
78
:So there is a Tibetan dakini.
79
:You know what that is?
80
:It is a female Buddhist monk.
81
:I hope I'm saying her
name right, is Niguma.
82
:She lived a thousand years ago, and
she was trying to teach the people
83
:about this kind of grace, this divine
love, and she says we're missing it.
84
:So she came up with the four ways that
we are missing it, And I want you to
85
:ask yourself which one rings true to you
when it comes to dealing with this big
86
:long list of your weaknesses so you can
receive sufficient grace Are you ready?
87
:Number one, it is so
simple I didn't believe it
88
:Do you think sometimes we overthink,
overcomplicate, and make things much
89
:bigger than they need to be, especially
when it comes to spiritual matters?
90
:It is so simple, I didn't believe it.
91
:… Number two, it is so close,
I couldn't recognize it.
92
:What is that quote about missing
the forest because of the trees?
93
:So is this grace, so close to us,
that we're not recognizing it?
94
:Three, it is so profound, so
deep, I couldn't conceive it
95
:It's like the waves to the ocean.
96
:They're just one and the same.
97
:And the same is for this grace,
this divine love of our Savior.
98
:It is part of us, a part of our soul,
just like the waves are to the ocean
99
:number four, so noble, I
didn't believe I deserved it.
100
:That one rings true to me
101
:I love the story of the prodigal son.
102
:My favorite part is when he is
returning home and he feels like he
103
:doesn't deserve to be welcomed home.
104
:In fact, he even says he's gonna
be happy with just being a servant
105
:and he hopes that his father will
take him back and understand.
106
:And while he is, still a long way
off, his father saw him coming.
107
:Filled with love and compassion, he runs
to his son, embraces him and kisses him,
108
:puts a ring on his finger, a- coat on
his back has a feast and a celebration.
109
:We are his divine daughters and sons.
110
:And it is his great pleasure to give
us his kingdom, to give us his grace
111
:sufficiently, what we are in need
of, meeting us right where we are.
112
:So what are we missing?
113
:Is it so simple that you don't believe it?
114
:Is it so close that you can't see it?
115
:Is it so deep that you
can't comprehend it?
116
:Or is it so noble you think
you do not deserve it?
117
:I think we're a little bit
of all of them, don't you?
118
:And I'm just going to remind you,
119
:this was written over
a thousand years ago.
120
:Humanness.
121
:Our story is as long as time has existed.
122
:Adam and Eve worried about their weakness.
123
:They hid.
124
:They sewed fig leaves to cover it up.
125
:What are we doing?
126
:Probably the same thing.
127
:So it's my invitation to you to take
a moment in meditation, meditative
128
:prayer, to contemplate not a whole
list of your weakness, just one.
129
:The weakness of our humanness, the natural
man, and how we are separating ourselves
130
:from this divine grace, this amazing
grace that is all around you, that God is
131
:relentlessly pursuing you, and his arms
are always outstretched, calling you home.
132
:And my promise is his grace is sufficient
133
:And how about we make our grace
sufficient for each other?
134
:Offer each other grace in our weakness and
just say, "Hey, it's okay you have weeds
135
:in your yard, and it's okay you forgot."
136
:I love you.
137
:I don't know if you noticed this, but I
tried a little experiment on this episode,
138
:that the music has been running throughout
the whole episode while I'm talking, this
139
:is to cover up the mistakes, my weakness,
the background noise, my little clearing
140
:my throat, or the computer revving up.
141
:And it got me to thinking, this
is how his grace is sufficient.
142
:It is always there, so simple, so close,
so profound, and so noble, always with us.
143
:So be humble.
144
:We all have weakness, We're all human.
145
:And have faith that God
will make weakness, your
146
:strengths, your superpowers.
147
:You've got this I believe that,
and I'll see you on the trail
