Evo Terra:

Sometimes we just need a change in our podcast,

Evo Terra:

either subtle or fundamental.

Evo Terra:

But one thing remains the same.

Evo Terra:

Us.

Evo Terra:

What do we do when some aspects of our personality just

Evo Terra:

aren't perfect for podcasting?

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

Before we get started, I am not a psychologist.

Evo Terra:

So if you have a personality disorder, if you're in therapy, or you're working with

Evo Terra:

a professional mental health provider, do what they say, not this moron.

Evo Terra:

All right?

Evo Terra:

Now, there's a lot that we can change about our podcasts.

Evo Terra:

We can change the topics because, you know, we're people and we have lots

Evo Terra:

of interest and lots of experiences.

Evo Terra:

Or we can even learn new experiences and pass those along, that knowledge along in

Evo Terra:

our podcast if that's what we wish to do.

Evo Terra:

We can change the angle that we take because, again, we're persuasive

Evo Terra:

people and we know that subtle shifts in how we talk about something

Evo Terra:

might make that topic more palatable to the people on the other end.

Evo Terra:

Might make our case better, if you will.

Evo Terra:

We can change the format of our podcast because we know that millions of shows

Evo Terra:

already exist and something like 20,000 new shows are added every single week.

Evo Terra:

So we're constantly being exposed, if we're paying attention, to new people

Evo Terra:

doing new things with their format.

Evo Terra:

We can change the branding elements for a fresh look of our podcasts, or

Evo Terra:

even the branding elements inside of our podcast episodes for a fresh sound.

Evo Terra:

Going further, we can change our voice.

Evo Terra:

We can use speech-language pathologists, or even vocal coaches.

Evo Terra:

They give us more confidence that we are sounding the way

Evo Terra:

that we really want to sound.

Evo Terra:

And there are a myriad of other subtle changes and really big changes

Evo Terra:

that we can make to our podcasts.

Evo Terra:

But what about our personality?

Evo Terra:

Now, I'm not qualified to answer the question definitively,

Evo Terra:

"Can people change?"

Evo Terra:

I'm not answering that question.

Evo Terra:

Nor am I going down the path of whether or not you should or should

Evo Terra:

not, or anybody should or should not change basically who they are.

Evo Terra:

But I will say that there may be some aspects of your personality that are

Evo Terra:

more effected habits, muscle memory in the brain to use a lay person's

Evo Terra:

thinking metaphor around this.

Evo Terra:

And I'm going to use me as an example for that.

Evo Terra:

So I, if you know me, I'm pretty quick with the joke, which makes me, in my

Evo Terra:

opinion, kind of a rotten interviewer.

Evo Terra:

But on the same - I recognize that about me.

Evo Terra:

That's why I don't do a lot of interview shows.

Evo Terra:

However, weirdly enough, I'm actually paid to interview people.

Evo Terra:

Not on this show, and not on anything related to the topics of podcasting

Evo Terra:

or honestly things I'm very interested about, but I do, I am paid to do these

Evo Terra:

short conversations with professionals and markedly unfunny topics.

Evo Terra:

Why do I do this?

Evo Terra:

Well, partly because I get paid to do that and that's important, but also because

Evo Terra:

suppressing my own natural knee-jerk, let's-crack-a-joke-now-quickly-Evo,

Evo Terra:

that's helping.

Evo Terra:

I think it makes me a better, more rounded, better overall podcaster.

Evo Terra:

Let's talk about my friend Don.

Evo Terra:

I'm just going to call him Don because that's his name.

Evo Terra:

Don is a long-time podcaster who has successfully monetized

Evo Terra:

a long-running multi-host show.

Evo Terra:

But Don also, in the decades almost he's been podcasting, realizes he's never

Evo Terra:

done a solo show or a scripted show.

Evo Terra:

So now, he's quietly experimenting on doing both of those on a semi-secret show.

Evo Terra:

And it's very likely the show's not going to continue.

Evo Terra:

In fact, he said straight up, it's not going to continue after the ten episodes.

Evo Terra:

But I bet that he is going to take the lessons learned and then

Evo Terra:

incorporate those new aspects of his own personality - not new aspects, but

Evo Terra:

uncovered aspects and incorporate those for his multi-host podcasting efforts.

Evo Terra:

Or take my other friend Terry.

Evo Terra:

We'll call him Terry because, again, that's his name.

Evo Terra:

Terry is taking a break from his podcast right now.

Evo Terra:

It's changed names and changed focus and direction many times, but Terry

Evo Terra:

right now is finding really good success in a short-form video platform.

Evo Terra:

Which is interesting because Terry, I know, is prone to waxing poetically,

Evo Terra:

which makes his episodes longer than they really need to be and has a tough

Evo Terra:

time cutting out the extra stuff.

Evo Terra:

But this new restrictive, shorter format stops him from doing that.

Evo Terra:

He can't.

Evo Terra:

And because of that, Terry's going to relaunch his podcast before too long and

Evo Terra:

he's going to bring those lessons learned from that short format down, suppressing

Evo Terra:

that ability, that innate need to talk forever, and just get to the point.

Evo Terra:

I'm not sure that any of those, mine, Don's, or Terry's, qualify

Evo Terra:

for really changed personalities.

Evo Terra:

Probably not.

Evo Terra:

But I think that all of them recognize a change in which parts

Evo Terra:

of the personality we each choose to expose, which ones you are likely

Evo Terra:

to see and/or hear on the podcast.

Evo Terra:

We're de-emphasizing some parts and emphasizing other parts.

Evo Terra:

Maybe recently discovered parts.

Evo Terra:

And all of that's making for a better podcast, not just for them,

Evo Terra:

but also for their audiences.

Evo Terra:

Now, if you know someone who's letting maybe a part of their personality,

Evo Terra:

maybe they recognize that parts of their personality just aren't conducive

Evo Terra:

to doing great podcasting anymore.

Evo Terra:

Maybe it's getting in the way of their podcasting efforts.

Evo Terra:

Well, share this episode or article with them to show them some ideas of

Evo Terra:

how they might be able to work through that by emphasizing certain parts and

Evo Terra:

deemphasizing other parts of that.

Evo Terra:

And, of course, if you love the idea and the content I bring to you every

Evo Terra:

day on Podcast Pontifications please, I'd appreciate it if you would go

Evo Terra:

to buymeacoffee.com/EvoTerra, and do that, buy me a virtual coffee.

Evo Terra:

All right.

Evo Terra:

That's it.

Evo Terra:

I shall be back tomorrow with yet another Podcast Pontifications.
