Today I’d like to tell you about a paper by a group of researchers in Sweden.
The paper is titled, A large-scale experiment on New Year’s resolutions: Approach-oriented goals are more successful than avoidance-oriented goals.
It was published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE in December 2020.
The researchers wanted to find out what kinds of resolutions people make, how confident they are that they will stick to their goals, and how successful they are.
They wondered whether phrasing their goals as “approach-oriented” or as“avoidance-oriented” made a difference in success rates.
They also wanted to know if having support in the form of information and exercises in goal-setting would increase their success.
