🎙️ Episode 4x05 — Goodbye, Columbia

Upper East Siders, buckle up — it’s time for another piping-hot serving of the Non-Judging Breakfast Pod. This week, Leif and Steve dig into Gossip Girl Season 4, Episode 5: “Goodbye, Columbia”, a chaotic blend of rumor-mongering, public shaming, and academic sabotage that only Manhattan’s elite could deliver.

🥞 Episode Summary

When a scandalous rumor about Serena spreads faster than a text blast from Gossip Girl herself, Columbia University becomes ground zero for chaos. The hosts unpack how Serena’s “reputation” becomes weaponized against her — and how the show uses gossip as social currency in a post-high-school world.

Meanwhile, Dan tries to balance single fatherhood with his own moral code, Blair plays puppet master behind the scenes (as usual), and Vanessa’s guilt starts to show cracks. Plus, Juliet continues her mysterious manipulation campaign, proving that no Ivy League honor code can contain true scheming energy.

Leif brings the veteran insight, pointing out the parallels between old-school Gossip Girl high school drama and its more adult Ivy League reinvention, while Steve — still the rookie — hilariously navigates who’s lying, who’s gaslighting, and who’s sleeping with the professor.

💬 Highlights & Hot Takes

  • Gossip as a weapon: how GG turns rumor into a literal academic crisis.
  • Serena’s “reputation” storyline — dated, problematic, and oh-so-2000s.
  • Blair’s endless quest for dominance: Queen B in tweed.
  • Juliet’s villain arc finally sharpens — is she the most grounded antagonist yet?
  • Steve’s ongoing confusion about everyone’s morals (or lack thereof).
  • A deep dive into what “power” means for these characters after Constance.

🧇 Favorite Quotes

“A lesbian switcheroo doesn’t exactly make you Blackwater.”
“We lost it when he said that — it was like pointing down to his crap.”
“The coffee is strong, the waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter than ever.”

☕ Episode Energy

Vibe: Chaotic Ivy League melodrama meets old-school GG scandal.

Steve:

I loved it.

Steve:

Get there quicker.

Steve:

Get there quicker.

Steve:

We lost it when he said that.

Steve:

It was like pointing down to his crap.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Serena has might, there's a rumor going around that Serena has

Steve:

something, something get there quicker.

Steve:

Oh, oh, oh.

Leif:

Hey Upper.

Leif:

East Siders and all You Scandal loving listeners out there.

Leif:

You just tuned into the Non-Judging Breakfast pod where the coffee is

Leif:

strong, the waffles are fresh and the gossip is hotter than ever.

Leif:

My name is Leif and I'm your seasoned gossip girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, the rookie, the newbie, the, I don't know, Leif.

Steve:

What's the new guy now that we're in season four?

Leif:

A lesbian switcher doesn't exactly make you Blackwater.

Leif:

No, but you should see all my merit

Steve:

badges for tax fraud.

Steve:

Okay.

Steve:

Exposing tax fraud.

Steve:

So here's the deal folks.

Steve:

Leif has been watching Gossip Girl since it first aired, and

Steve:

I'm diving in for the first time.

Steve:

And together we are your dynamic duo, bringing you all the drama, the

Steve:

romance, and sometimes questionable fashion choices of this iconic 2007

Leif:

series.

Leif:

Bring your magnifying glasses because each week we're dissecting every juicy detail

Leif:

of the show, what episode at a time.

Leif:

We'll connect the dots, uncover the sneaky little Easter eggs, and of course serve

Leif:

up some piping hot behind the scenes tea.

Leif:

And expect some iconic fantom moments too, because what's a

Leif:

deep dive without a little drama?

Steve:

And since we are all about inclusivity here at the Non-Judging

Steve:

Breakfast Pod, there is always room for you at the non-judging breakfast table.

Steve:

So go ahead and grab your coffee, your mimosa light up some of Chuck's

Steve:

special medicine and let's go ahead and get this thing started.

Steve:

Let's

Leif:

get started.

Leif:

But before we get into the episode,

Music:

what is it now?

Leif:

Spotify was doing some weird stuff 'cause it's deleting some comments.

Leif:

Weird because I, like, I went back in to copy and paste them

Leif:

for my, for my show notes.

Leif:

Uh, but I do remember there was one from a new listener, Billy.

Leif:

Uh, who apparently just binge watched all of our episodes up,

Leif:

up until the season three finale.

Leif:

Awesome.

Leif:

Welcome Billy.

Leif:

So hope, hopefully you're enjoying season four.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Um, and yeah, uh, binge is definitely a much appreciated

Leif:

and it's a huge compliment.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Binge-worthy.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

We love it.

Steve:

Especially if you started from the beginning because those first

Steve:

couple episodes were rough when we were, when we were finding

Steve:

our, finding our groove, I felt.

Leif:

So we do have the $1 a month Patreon right now just to support

Leif:

us, but I am coming up some ideas for some, uh, bonus content.

Leif:

So that should be coming to patreon.com/ non-judging breakfast pod.

Leif:

Yes, I love that.

Leif:

And, and we would love to have you guys

Steve:

more involved.

Steve:

Always appreciated.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Never expected.

Steve:

Yes,

Leif:

absolutely.

Leif:

And we are here to talk about season four, episode five.

Leif:

Goodbye Columbia.

Leif:

Original error date was October 11th, 2010.

Leif:

And based on the movie, goodbye, Lenin.

Leif:

Oh, I think, I'm gonna have to check this out.

Leif:

This sounds kind of funny, but it is a 2003 German language film.

Leif:

And in 1990 to protect his fragile mother from a fatal shock after a long

Leif:

coma, a young man must keep her from learning that their beloved nation of East

Leif:

Germany, as she knew it has disappeared.

Leif:

Wow.

Leif:

So it sounds kind of funny.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

A woman wakes up from a coma after the Berlin Wall has fallen.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And it is like, I, I pine for the good old days.

Steve:

Damn.

Steve:

But yeah, so that's interesting.

Steve:

Uh, so it's L-E-N-I-N, not Lenin as in John, but Lenin as in Yeah.

Steve:

With the I Yeah.

Leif:

Episodes written by Robert Hole, who's, uh.

Leif:

It's been the story episode editor for every episode of Seasons two and

Leif:

three, but then also wrote the X-Files.

Leif:

It's a wonderful lie.

Leif:

The grandfather, the Lost Boy, the Treasure of Serena Madre, the Lady

Leif:

Vanished, and Dr. Estranged love.

Steve:

It's an interesting array of credits.

Steve:

'cause there's some that are okay, but a lot of these aren't, aren't great.

Steve:

You know, lady Vanish, we've talked over and over about

Steve:

how we didn't like that one.

Steve:

Um, but

Leif:

the Treasure of Serena Madre is one of the best episodes.

Leif:

Exactly.

Leif:

So, so we have like these, the X-Files is also kind of fun too.

Leif:

And Dr. Es Strange Love was also fairly good.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And

Steve:

we really liked that.

Steve:

But I also feel like the grandfather was kind of, uh, that,

Steve:

that first one we were kind of.

Steve:

A little middle of the road on this episode almost felt like

Steve:

it was written by two people.

Steve:

To me, the, that, that kind of a team B team feeling, because there

Steve:

were, there was some dialogue that was amazing and then there were some

Steve:

plot points that were just horrible.

Steve:

So I just kind of

:

mm-hmm.

Steve:

It, it, it kind of was a weird spectrum in the writing that

Steve:

kind of is reflected in this resume.

Leif:

I felt like it was a stupid episode, but it was well put together.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

They, yeah.

Steve:

I think that's a great, a great way to put it.

Leif:

They got the, the writer's room and they came up with the episode

Leif:

and it was just a stupid idea.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And, but he made it work.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

No, no.

Steve:

We're going with it.

Leif:

This is what we're doing.

Leif:

And back again in the director's chair is Jeremiah Chick.

Leif:

Uh, he did a three 20.

Leif:

It's a dad, dad, dad world, but this is the guy that also directed Benny

Leif:

and June and Christmas vacation.

Leif:

Oh, yeah.

Leif:

I, yeah.

Leif:

And I think he did a good job with this.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Oh, yeah.

Steve:

The directing was good.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

I have no complaints there.

Steve:

I, I, in fact, I'll, I'll say I think that Penn had a particularly excellent

Steve:

performance in most of this episode.

Leif:

Oh.

Leif:

I think Jessica Zu had her best performance

Steve:

in the series.

Steve:

Yes, absolutely.

Steve:

100. I was actually gonna mention that too.

Steve:

That 100%, that the rollercoaster that Vanessa goes through in

Steve:

this episode, she literally hits every human emotion on the scale.

Steve:

And so I agree that the, and, and she nails it.

Steve:

So again, like phenomenal performance by Jessica Sho Sho SHOs,

Steve:

Shaza sha.

Leif:

Go ahead and give us that vulture recap.

Steve:

Alright.

Steve:

They say love is a kind of insanity, but everyone knows when you lose love

Steve:

or start to feel it slipping away from you, that's when the real fun begins.

Steve:

We saw this in three stages of last night's gossip episode

Steve:

of Gossip Girl Vanessa.

Steve:

Tormented by Dan's relationship with Serena pursues the truth about them with

Steve:

single-minded intensity bursting into hysterical rants and con, uh, confronting

Steve:

Serena on the street like a character in some kind of Elizabethan tragedy, only to

Steve:

realize as she turns her tear stain face.

Steve:

To regard Dan's.

Steve:

That the real truth is that Dan is just kind of ambivalent about her.

Steve:

Meanwhile, Chuck having decided the only thing that will heal his freshly

Steve:

broken heart is a dialysis pumping pure vengeance declares his decidedly insane

Steve:

plan to ruin every single thing in Blair's life until she is left with nothing.

Steve:

A sentiment eerily echoed by mysterious jail guy who we learn

Steve:

has the same intentions for Serena, no doubt because of whatever really

Steve:

nasty venereal disease she gave him.

Leif:

Indeed, Walter indeed, indeed de into act one.

Leif:

Gossip Girl monologues.

Leif:

Morning on the Upper East side, where even our own blonde birdie has

Leif:

been spotted flying the coop early to make it to her early classes.

Leif:

Leave it to Serena Vander Woodson to make geek Chic.

Leif:

Who knew Ivy would look so good on her?

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And

Steve:

then,

Leif:

yeah, Serena's on her way to class, but has her attacks.

Leif:

He saw by a good looking man, escorting a young woman.

Leif:

It's made apparent that this isn't the first time this has happened, and

Leif:

despite Serena's obvious annoyance, the man has the balls to ask her out crap.

Leif:

Like immediately I'm like, oh, fuck this.

Steve:

Fuck this guy.

Steve:

Fuck all of this.

Steve:

That first of all.

Steve:

When she waves for a cab, two cabs pull up.

Steve:

And so in my mind I'm like, yeah, of course Serena Vander

Steve:

Woodson gets all of her cabs.

Steve:

Second thought, why is Serena taking a cab?

Steve:

When has Serena taken a cab anywhere?

Steve:

They take cars everywhere.

Steve:

Third, when does travel matter in gossip Girl?

Leif:

Like, well, uh, it you got, you kind of have to take a cab if you are late.

Leif:

'cause if your car isn't near you,

Steve:

yeah, I guess if you have a car service and you have to call

Steve:

them up, but also why are you late?

Steve:

Why don't you have that car pulling up at that time?

Steve:

Exactly right.

Steve:

Then every day scheduled.

Steve:

Exactly right.

Steve:

Like this guy couldn't steal your ca car if it was your car.

Steve:

Like the one he got into for himself.

Steve:

Also there is, you know, that second cab pulled up and then it's not there and then

Steve:

it's sometimes isn't, sometimes isn't.

Steve:

And it's there later in the later scene with the two of them.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

So there was some continuity errors in in how they shot it.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

But like, yeah.

Steve:

And then it doesn't even get to the whole, this complete way too

Steve:

old for her jerk flirting with her.

Steve:

This guy who's like escorting actresses and flight attendants out of his room

Steve:

every night offers her I, I mean he was funny, like no doubt the guy was funny.

Steve:

Like, you look like you're about a size seven.

Steve:

Goes to hand her the shoes like I give him for Well he is very charming guy.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

He was very charming.

Steve:

But also like.

Steve:

Fuck

Leif:

this.

Leif:

And did you catch that he did set up the end of the episode that he set

Leif:

up the bar at the end of the episode?

Leif:

Oh,

Steve:

yeah.

Steve:

Well, he made, he makes the comment about the only good, the, the

Leif:

King Cole Bar makes the, is the only place that makes the red snapper, right?

Leif:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Which is where they end up at the end of the episode.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So she clearly was going to see him.

Steve:

Yeah, exactly.

Steve:

And despite her sitting there like, oh, you

Leif:

like, and it's, so this is the second time this season we got

Leif:

introduced to a new character and for the whole episode we didn't get his name.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

It is Colin.

Leif:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

Blair is having her minions compile information about women in power and

Leif:

that she can, so she can find a mentor.

Leif:

When Serena shows up looking for advice, Blair orders the minions

Leif:

to walk behind her for privacy.

Leif:

10 steps for Zoe.

Leif:

Serena needs advice on dealing with being late, and Blair mentions that

Leif:

she's sticky on campus to avoid Chuck.

Steve:

Season three when everybody graduates and goes to college, you see

Steve:

evolution in all of their characters.

Steve:

All of them grew up, all of them had this level of maturity.

Steve:

All of the, the show took on a, a new tone that really reflected college

Steve:

life and now we're back to season one.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

They, they definitely took them out of their element by putting

Leif:

'em in NYU and I guess it must have got, it got mixed reactions.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And so they try to recapture the season one by just making,

Leif:

going to a school that apparently is exactly like high school.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And, and I, I'm so over it.

Steve:

Like I was so over it when they graduated and was so glad to be

Steve:

like, onto something new and like the first, or I'm sorry, season three.

Steve:

Is Blair's search for minions, right?

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

That that comes up all the time.

Steve:

And she finds and she finds the Columbia girls and latches to that.

Steve:

So we have it kind of built into the story for her to get these minions.

Steve:

But I'm just so tired of her having minions.

Steve:

I'm just so tired of this high school shit.

Steve:

Make it a college show.

Steve:

I hate when col I and, and they're not the first TV show to do this.

Leif:

I mean, minions is a thing, or I mean obviously called minions, but

Leif:

you see those girls at all age groups that, you know how they had their

Leif:

little assistants to follow them around?

Leif:

And you do

Steve:

And, and I've known girls like that in college.

Steve:

And I'm not saying it doesn't exist.

Steve:

I'm saying that you've done that.

Steve:

You did it for two years.

Steve:

Very well move on.

Steve:

Blair's not moving on.

Steve:

Yeah, I know.

Steve:

And Blair and Chuck aren't moving on.

Steve:

No.

Steve:

Like, Ooh.

Steve:

This whole episode is just, it is a very funny episode with a lot of great

Steve:

twists, but it is stagnant at the same

Leif:

time.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

Rufuss is at the loft because Dan hasn't been returning his calls, Dan, and Sure.

Leif:

He had a long talk with Vanessa and they worked out all their issues.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

I'm glad that we have this inappropriate relationship back in

Steve:

our lives 'cause it's been a minute since Rufuss and, and Vanessa got a

Steve:

little awkwardly chummy and I get it.

Steve:

He's checking in on Dan and his last conversation with Dan was, I don't know

Steve:

who I want Ru as I get him checking in, but it's also another weird, a little

Steve:

too familiar, a little too friendly with your kid's girlfriend conversations

Leif:

and it.

Leif:

It gets even worse.

Leif:

He, he looked more like Dan than ever this episode.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah, he really did.

Leif:

Nate and Dan are hanging out at the Empire and Nate invites Dan

Leif:

and Vanessa to double date with him and Juliet at Hamilton house.

Leif:

Dan jumps at the opportunity once he finds out appetizers are involved.

Leif:

Nate says he and Julia are planning on going all the way after the mixer.

Steve:

I loved this scene.

Steve:

Maybe the best scene in the episode.

Steve:

I loved Nate and Dan.

Steve:

Their banter was fantastic.

Steve:

There's gonna be snacks.

Steve:

Oh, in that case, okay.

Steve:

Want to go to a movie afterwards.

Steve:

It doesn't have to have subtitles.

Steve:

Like you can see the history and familiarity and the, that,

Steve:

you know, that Dan has been like, yo, let's go see a movie.

Steve:

And Nate's like, okay.

Steve:

And just had to read a movie.

Leif:

Uh, they're definitely like dress alike as well to Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

They've been doing it all season.

Steve:

Yeah, they, you're right.

Steve:

They have, and, and the, uh, and, and Dan, when he is like, you know, with everything

Steve:

that happened, I know I missed you two.

Steve:

Just the two of them.

Steve:

No hugs.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

No hugs.

Steve:

I'm not giving you a hug.

Steve:

They, they were just so in sync and it just felt so genuine.

Steve:

And I, yeah.

Steve:

I really just felt

Leif:

this scene.

Leif:

Mm. And for a supposed secret society.

Leif:

Hamilton House seems to have a lot of parties for nine members.

Steve:

It's a secret society that they really want you to know about.

Leif:

I everyone wears a key after all the time.

Steve:

What's that key for The Secret Society?

Steve:

The Hamilton Hamilton house that I'm a part of?

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Juliet is visiting Ben in prison again.

Leif:

Juliet is afraid of getting caught, taking down Serena so soon after the last time.

Leif:

Ben suggests using Nate as a fall guy to sh and shows her a picture

Leif:

of Nate and Juliet kissing.

Leif:

The next part of the plan is to get Serena expelled from Columbia

Steve:

Gossip Girl.

Steve:

At this point, let us give us a fucking clue, like why is this guy

Steve:

so obsessed with destroying Serena?

Steve:

Why is this girl going along with it?

Steve:

Like clearly they have some kind of history.

Leif:

So I will say, even though it hasn't necessarily been linked to this character

Leif:

yet, they have mentioned this in the last season, the incident they caused this.

Leif:

Interesting.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

They, they caused someone to go to jail last season.

Leif:

Not necessarily.

Leif:

So there's no direct link to Ben.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

But the reason why he is in jail was that story was mentioned.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

Interesting.

Leif:

It's one, one of those things where gospel will just mentioned something

Leif:

about the past, you know, in passing.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Right, right, right.

Leif:

But they, they do end up tied in

Steve:

which the, which it is one of the neat things about the show

Steve:

when they drop little Easter eggs, probably, I'm assuming from the books

Steve:

and then incorporating them in later

Leif:

possibly.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

It's pro definitely like tied in after the fact.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

At Columbia Blair casually cuts a long line in attempt to register for

Leif:

Miss Chamberlain's lecture series.

Leif:

She is however surprised to see Chuck's also there and

Leif:

apparently auditing a few classes.

Leif:

Chuck announces that he plans to take Columbia away from Blair

Steve:

over it.

Steve:

The only, the only thing I will say the, the one bright spot in

Steve:

this conversation was when he says, for the Bart bass Rotunda, what?

Steve:

It's a round, it's a building typically round, and I know what a

Steve:

rotunda is, but it was just his, his timing was just impeccable on that.

:

Yeah,

Leif:

we see Serena, then Vanessa and then Nate and Dan reading a

Leif:

BLS about Serena having an STD.

Leif:

Then as we go to break, we see Juliette walking with a stone

Leif:

cold killer face on Gossip Girl.

Steve:

Th this is uncalled for outing someone's medical records.

Steve:

Is unfucking called for no matter where you get the source from?

Steve:

That was uncalled for.

Leif:

I get though, this, this is, it's supposed to mimic the high school.

Leif:

Got some?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Uh, yeah.

Leif:

I mean, I know because you, you know, someone had even the hint, someone, the

Leif:

hint of having an SVD in high school, the whole school would know by lunchtime.

Leif:

Yeah, exactly.

Leif:

Exactly.

Leif:

And this is what the, the actual blast said.

Leif:

This just in looks like you can take the girl out of the party,

Leif:

but not the party out of the girl.

Leif:

Rumor has it.

Leif:

Our favorite blonde could be spreading more than just good cheer.

Leif:

And if it's true, then there's a test out there.

Leif:

A few of you might not be able to pass.

Leif:

Does SVWI have an STD.

Steve:

That line of not taking the party out of the girl is also vulgar.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

It's horrible.

Steve:

Like, like God damnit God

Leif:

some

Steve:

girl I, this whole, wow, this

Leif:

is horrible.

Steve:

Yes it is.

Steve:

I wonder, 'cause you know that TV shows do this sometimes a good example

Steve:

is bad beer or beer bad from Buffy.

:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

Where they actually get extra money from government grants and government

Steve:

programming to do certain sort of PSA.

Steve:

We definitely know their show's not above taking money from companies.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

We do know that they are not above taking money from where they can get it.

Steve:

And, and a lot of shows, especially aimed at teenagers, have done episodes.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Where they have these kinds of messages in them.

Steve:

Uh, which I was gonna wait to talk about until we get to the Nate scene,

Steve:

which I'll go into a little bit more

Leif:

and we move into act two.

Leif:

Blair is reassuring Serena that if the rumors will blow over when they can't

Leif:

be confirmed, she also lets Serena know that Chuck has brought the war to campus.

Leif:

And Ms. Chamberlain's assistant position will be just the distraction Blair needs.

Steve:

It was a good Blair Serena moment.

Steve:

Uh, good.

Steve:

Friends with each other.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I will say, I think one of the better things this season has done is every

Leif:

episode we have several one-on-one scenes with Blair and Serena.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

And, and best friends.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

You, them, them friendly scenes.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Tagging in, catching up.

Steve:

It, it really helps narratively also to keep the plot going and

Steve:

really emphasize that constant

Leif:

relationship.

Leif:

Juliet is explaining the gossip girl who fucked who chart to Nate and Dan.

Leif:

When Vanessa shows up to talk to Dan as they walk off the talk in

Leif:

private, Juliet says she wants Nate to get a test before they bang.

Leif:

Smart move.

Leif:

Considering it's summer.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

I, it it is a, it is a smart move.

Steve:

I also feel like when I was talking about that PSA, this conversation

Steve:

is that PSA, I feel like there was kind of a missed opportunity

Steve:

here when Juliet said, I'm a girl.

Steve:

I pay attention in health class.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

For her to say, I'm a girl, we need to actually be a little bit more aware

Steve:

of these things because of how we're treated societally and how the, the

Steve:

onus of protection is often put on us.

Steve:

But I also thought that that's

Leif:

definitely not the message Gossip girl

Steve:

sending No, no, it is not.

Steve:

But the fact that they did drive home the message of you can carry this.

Steve:

And not you can carry a an STD Yeah.

Steve:

And not know and still give it to people.

Leif:

That was definitely a good factoid.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

I think that that is where that PSA really comes in and a good piece of

Steve:

information and, and honestly, like I said, I almost wish, if that's what

Steve:

the ca, if that was the case, lean in and really have like, try to get a

Steve:

little bit more of that conversation.

Steve:

'cause Nate's also the perfect person to have that conversation with.

Steve:

Nate didn't pay attention in health class.

Steve:

Nate didn't pay attention in any class.

Steve:

So to have to teach him about St. STIs, that's, uh, that is

Steve:

a really good conversation.

Steve:

So I thought it was, it fit the plot while also delivering that message.

Steve:

So I wasn't mad at it at

Leif:

all.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

Now this scene, Vanessa, is once again doubting that Dan and Serena didn't

Leif:

sleep together in the spring, but she seems to calm down after they talk.

Steve:

She has that moment where she's like, you're right.

Steve:

I'm sorry.

Steve:

Where Dan is basically saying, we had this conversation and I

Steve:

don't, and I can't have it again.

:

Yeah.

Steve:

And she apologizes and seems to let it go.

Steve:

You really feel for Vanessa here that we know, I believe

Steve:

Dan, that nothing happened.

Steve:

That has always kind of been the onscreen, offscreen thing that

Steve:

Dan and Serena said to each other.

Steve:

Nothing happened that it was just a kiss.

Steve:

So that lingering paranoia in the back of Vanessa's head that just

Steve:

gets turned up and just boils up every time their orbits cross.

Steve:

It makes sense.

Steve:

It is how people feel.

Steve:

So I thought that it was, I, I, I thought this was a good conversation,

Steve:

even though I would be annoyed with her too, if I was Dan.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Juliet finds Serena in the quad and denies starting the rumors about her.

Leif:

Juliet also feigns sympathy for the way the professor calls Serena

Leif:

out, out in the middle of class.

Leif:

Juliet then insinuates that Nate believes the rumor, and just then

Leif:

Serena conveniently sees Nate and Dan walking to the student health center.

Steve:

I don't, I, I feel like Juliet, the actor playing Juliet, um, something sharp.

Steve:

I can't think of her first name.

Steve:

Juliet.

Steve:

Juliette?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Cha.

Leif:

The character is Juliet Sharp.

Steve:

Oh, Juliette Sharp.

Steve:

Uh, yeah.

Steve:

The person playing it, I looked her up earlier and I can't remember her name,

Steve:

and I, I looked her up earlier to see if she was a soap opera actor, because

Steve:

she feels very soapy a lot of the time.

Steve:

Not bad acting, just not acting that we're used to seeing.

Steve:

On this show that a lot of her like and her like feigned expressions.

Steve:

Now she's also an actor who's acting, right?

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

She's playing a person who is acting, yeah.

Steve:

Another part which is incredibly difficult to communicate without being too obvious.

Steve:

So I think she does a decent job turn to Juliet herself that I was always

Steve:

kind of annoyed by this character.

Steve:

Katie Cassidy.

Steve:

Katie Cassidy, that's right.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

She's an Arrowverse, I think.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

She's in and she's in a few other things that I like.

Steve:

She, the character herself is, is a genius.

Steve:

She's actually like really pulling all of this shit off.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And when she gets caught, she really is able to pivot and rise above.

Steve:

The only time that she really got caught and didn't rise above

Steve:

was with the keys, and so she's pivoted and kept herself clean.

Steve:

She's, I I was thinking like, oh, this stupid stuff.

Steve:

No, she's getting away with it.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Like all of it.

Steve:

She's a great villain.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

She's, she's, I, I, I had the, like, she's Georgina if Georgina wasn't fucking nuts.

:

Yeah.

Steve:

So it just kind of, this scene was really when I was like,

Steve:

she's really pulling this shit off.

Steve:

She's way better than I'm giving her credit for.

Leif:

Dan is apologizing to Nate at, about telling him about the cotton swab

Leif:

thing when Serena storms up and demands to know what the hell they are doing.

Leif:

Nate says that he's doing this for someone else and Serena

Leif:

is not his priority right now.

Leif:

Serena, Nate

Steve:

has made it clear that you're not number one.

Steve:

I think that Serena's request for him to go somewhere else is reasonable.

Steve:

You, Nate, you could literally go anywhere and get this done.

Steve:

Less visibly

Leif:

Also for, I, I'm surprised he doesn't have a private doc.

Leif:

We know Chuck has a private doctor.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And he, they, they live together.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So

Steve:

yeah.

Steve:

Um, but also Dan and Nate going in together is not good optics.

Steve:

The two last guys you were accused.

Steve:

Oh, I'm just a wake man.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And, and I loved that though.

Steve:

Like, Dan, what?

Steve:

And again, when we see definitively, they did not sleep together.

Steve:

Dan, it's been what, six months or two years or, yeah, Dan, it's

Steve:

been what, two years and Yeah.

Steve:

So I'm just a wing man and then he goes and signs up for himself.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

He goes and signs Nate in.

Leif:

Uh, yeah.

Leif:

Not the best optics.

Leif:

No, not the best optics.

Leif:

We get a quick scene of Vanessa seeing a blast of Dan at the

Leif:

health center filling out forms.

Leif:

Yep.

Steve:

Yep.

Steve:

And Vanessa, as it is pointed out to you, you always look for the worst in people.

Leif:

Well, I mean, the way gossip girl's presenting it, it does absolutely look

Leif:

like Dan is worried and signing himself.

Steve:

Yeah,

:

yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I I, I totally get where Vanessa's coming from this whole episode.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

I, and yet I totally understand where Dan's coming from too.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

It, it's like we've said before, real conflict comes when both sides are right.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

Or seemingly right.

Leif:

Blair is reviewing trivia about Ms.

Leif:

Chamberlain on her way to deliver her favorite pie to the woman herself.

Leif:

However, Ms. Chamberlain informs Blair that the assistant position

Leif:

has already gone to Chuck.

Leif:

Chuck then lets Blair know that she isn't even in the class as it was over-enrolled.

Leif:

Oh, Chuck's

Steve:

now taking the spot from Blair and she was gonna bake her

Steve:

a pie to get into her good graces.

Steve:

And Chuck forgets how much he used to enjoy Blair's pie.

Steve:

Fucking, I mean, perfect line.

Steve:

Disgusting, but perfect line.

Leif:

Missed opportunity to smash the pie in his face.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah, for sure.

Leif:

And this is what Gossip Girl says As we go to break

Leif:

better batting down the hatches be, looks like your island in the storm

Leif:

was just hit by a bass five hurricane.

Leif:

Gossip girl.

Leif:

Had some good ones today.

Leif:

That one was.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Act three begins the next day.

Leif:

Serena and Blair both come down the stairs at the Waldorf apartment.

Leif:

Serena thinks she has accomplished something by securing a meeting with

Leif:

her professor during office hours.

Leif:

Blair explains that she hasn't given up just yet.

Leif:

As Ms. Chamberlain gets off the elevator, Blair is trying to get the

Leif:

assistant position by setting Ms. Chamberlain up with a man who isn't

Leif:

intimidated by a powerful woman.

Steve:

Okay, so first of all, yeah.

Steve:

Serena office hours mean that you can go find your professor anytime.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

He's there and, and like the has them every day or at least

Steve:

a few times a week, I'm sure.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Wooing the professor with a man, the chauvinism of the show

Steve:

will just sometimes really.

Steve:

Rear its head.

Steve:

This professor's like, oh, you know what?

Steve:

You're right.

Steve:

I need to have a man in my life to really, I am such a powerful woman

Steve:

to be, I thought a real professor.

Steve:

Right?

Steve:

But the whole thing is here is this big, powerful woman.

Steve:

So how do I make this big, powerful woman like me find her a man?

Steve:

It's so, and, and especially when you have all this other dirt on her,

Steve:

you have plenty else on her that you could, you could have blackmailed her.

Steve:

You could have found infor, you could have found information to blackmail her ex.

Steve:

You could have blackmailed the nanny.

Steve:

You had plenty of other information, but you're like, oh, well my stepdad's a

Steve:

lawyer and he can hook you up with a dude.

Steve:

It was the worst fucking.

Steve:

Plot.

Steve:

I mean,

Leif:

I guess I, I think it was fairly well set up though 'cause

Leif:

she was just dumped for the nanny.

Steve:

Right.

Steve:

Which is even more like, oh this woman can't get a, can't make it on

Steve:

her own when she's feeling so down.

Steve:

The same story would, would

Leif:

work fine with a guy.

Steve:

I think with a guy.

Steve:

It's a little bit different though because I think a guy being bribed by

Steve:

sex is a little bit different than, than this powerful guest lecturer.

Steve:

She's

Leif:

not being bribed with sex, she'd playing bribed with a compatible partner.

Steve:

Right.

Steve:

But I'm saying that if the plot were twisted and it was a man involved,

Steve:

that the man is going to be, not so much necessarily thinking in

Steve:

terms of long-term partnership and compatibility, but will this pan out?

Steve:

Is just kind of how I see

Leif:

that.

Leif:

But it could be plan played exactly the same I think.

Leif:

That's the way you see it going.

Leif:

'cause that's how you would write it.

Leif:

But it could easily, maybe, it could be the same exact story flipped.

Leif:

I think

Steve:

I, and, but even still, even the, the same exact story flipped.

Steve:

It just is such a, you're gonna fire this guy.

Steve:

It's a cliche.

Steve:

You're gonna fire this guy and hire me to be in your class.

Steve:

You're gonna make these life choices over me.

Steve:

Possibly setting you up with a guy that you might get along with.

Leif:

The only reason he, hi, she hired Chuck was because he pay,

Steve:

he is paying her.

Steve:

Well, yeah.

Steve:

She doesn't have morals.

Steve:

I'm just saying that it, it, it, to me, the, it, it diminishes the character

Steve:

of this powerful CEO who is going to just make decisions based on who this

Steve:

college kid is gonna set her up with.

Steve:

It's stupid, but I don't think it's, I don't think it, it's sex or anything.

Steve:

I, I, I found it to be sexist personally.

Steve:

And maybe you're right.

Steve:

Maybe it's 'cause it's how I would've written it.

Steve:

Uh, going the other way I could, yeah.

Steve:

I could see it exactly the same and reversed.

Steve:

I, yeah, I guess I just saw it as making this powerful person seem less powerful.

Steve:

And I think maybe this says something about me that if I see

Steve:

somebody that is powerful, but

Leif:

to powerful people

Steve:

that get to be in love, no, they absolutely do.

Steve:

But I'm saying that if love is what's going to bribe you into

Steve:

life, love, well you, if you have

Leif:

a ton of money, you can get anything else.

Leif:

The prospect of love again, the ultra rich, you know, they can get

Leif:

pretty much anything, but there's certain things you can't just buy.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

And up, you know, fighting somewhat compatible is that it was dumb.

Leif:

It's dumb.

Leif:

It was really dumb.

Leif:

But it works.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

My, my whole point is just it's, I don't think it's sexist.

Leif:

Oh, that's fair.

Leif:

Serena has yet another run in with the cute cab Steeler.

Leif:

The man admits that he has been doing this on purpose just to see Serena.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

So older guy stalking a teenager.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

You are an older man stalking a teenager.

Steve:

Once again.

Steve:

Gossip girl loves inappropriate relationships for Serena.

Leif:

Dan goes to the penthouse to ask for advice with about Vanessa.

Leif:

Rufuss clearly is uncomfortable with the idea of STDs.

Leif:

Rufuss gives Dan the advice that he needs to let Vanessa know that she

Leif:

is the most important in his life.

Leif:

And if that means taking a step back from his friendship with Serena, so be it.

Leif:

I

Steve:

loved it.

Leif:

Get there quicker.

Leif:

Get there quicker.

Steve:

We lost it when he said that.

Steve:

Which like pointing down to his cry.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Serena has my, there's a rumor going around that Serena has something,

Steve:

something get there quicker.

Steve:

Oh.

Steve:

Oh, whoa.

Leif:

I like how he checks with, make sure Lily's not there too.

:

Yeah.

Leif:

Vanessa tracks down Serena on the Columbia campus to ask

Leif:

her about what really happened with her and Dan last spring.

Leif:

Vanessa believes the worst about Serena and leaves in a huff.

Leif:

Serena gets a text from her professor that she's too late and that she should buy a

Steve:

watch.

Leif:

I loved this

Steve:

scene.

Steve:

I thought it was, I thought the directing in this scene was spotless.

Steve:

The speed, the pace of it, the way Serena's coming on and is

Steve:

ambushed by Vanessa, and they're both in piss moods already.

Steve:

And Vanessa starts drilling her and, and Serena's like, you always

Steve:

look for the worst in people anyway.

Steve:

Why?

Steve:

Stop now.

Steve:

Never answers her.

Steve:

Never denies it because it's not Serena's fucking place.

Steve:

Your question has been answered by your boyfriend.

Steve:

What?

Steve:

Is Serena gonna be the one that you now believe?

Steve:

No.

Steve:

You'll just think she's covering for her too.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

For him too.

Steve:

So when Serena just lays that out, you have two people again in piss poor moods,

Steve:

colliding and exploding, and then Vanessa the, and her storm off is just perfect.

Steve:

I loved this scene in this episode.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

So the text read that, that Serena got from her professor.

Leif:

I waited five minutes office hours over by a watch.

Leif:

So this means that she scheduled her appointment in the last five

Leif:

minutes of the office hours or,

Steve:

yeah, or at the end or just, or she scheduled her appointment and

Steve:

said, I'll come in at your office hours.

Steve:

Saw that his office hours ended at whatever time and was like, well,

Steve:

I'll show up by then, I'm sure,

Steve:

because again, this guy, and also this guy who's stalking her leaves

Steve:

every day so that he can see her.

Steve:

But why is his o, why are his office hours over in the beginning of the day

Steve:

when she's first leaving her house?

Steve:

I think he's just watching.

Steve:

He's just sitting there waiting for Rita all day with a woman.

Steve:

He's just like hires a prostitute just to sit in the lobby with him so he can

Steve:

escort them to a cab when he sees Serena.

Leif:

Oh boy.

Leif:

Minion Zoe is having martinis in Chuck Sweet.

Leif:

And passes some information about Blair to Chuck.

Steve:

You in this coming Blair, you've been treating Zoe like shit.

Steve:

She's, you've been making her your new Penelope and she is not having it.

Steve:

And she knows, she makes it clear.

Steve:

Zoe makes it clear in this scene, being in this orbit, one day she's

Steve:

gonna have to take down Blair.

Steve:

At least she expects that.

Steve:

She will one day.

Leif:

Uh, we know they only need three.

Leif:

They only need two minions.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

So,

Leif:

yep.

Leif:

Some, some of 'em might get eliminated because we got, we got Penelope

Leif:

in the, in the wing still, right?

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Although I'd, I'd prefer the silent third Columbia girl that we saw last season.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

Who was far, far more

Leif:

approachable.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Hi, Danielle.

Leif:

Juliet finds Nate trying to study at Hamilton house.

Leif:

Nate is frustrated because he learned that the test results could

Leif:

take three to four days to receive.

Leif:

Juliette suggests another means for learning the, if the rumor is true.

Leif:

Again, what about all the other women he slept with this summer?

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

They're only worried about the one, despite him having a little black book,

Steve:

like he's been where Chuck's been and we know Chuck has had stuff, so Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Get tested by guy.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

You, you did the right thing.

Steve:

You did the, you did the objectively right thing.

Steve:

We also, I think, skipped over the fact that Dan and Vanessa, when they had

Steve:

their confrontation about it way earlier where that Dan said we both got tested

Steve:

before we started dating, which I also feel is sort of that PSA money coming

Steve:

in like before you start with a new sexual partner, you should get tested.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

That's a smart thing to do.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Julia is outside talking to Ben on the phone and says she

Leif:

has Nate right where they need him to be, to be the fall guy.

Leif:

She quickly hangs up when she sees Vanessa approaching Vanessa, ask Julia for advice.

Leif:

It looks like Julia has found a new fall guy, or should I say Fall gal?

Leif:

There was one other

Steve:

point about Nate getting tested.

Steve:

Oh, that these results that they'll take a few days to come in and you see

Steve:

Juliet trying to push Nate away to keep that boundary that it's fake dating.

Steve:

So again, making him get tested and wait for the results is just another

Steve:

piece of this plan that is coming together despite the fact that clearly

Steve:

she is starting to fall for Nate.

Steve:

But see, but but having that like built in, Nope, we can't for a few days.

Steve:

I, I thought was just a really smart addition to her plan.

:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

But Ben's

Leif:

prison has a very liberal communication policy.

Leif:

'cause he seems he can just call or get visits anytime of day or night.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And also, typically calls from prisoners are monitored and recorded.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Unless you're talking to your attorney specifically.

Steve:

Yes, yes.

Steve:

They are monitored for

Leif:

specifically this reason.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

To make sure you're not, you know, committing

Steve:

crimes.

Steve:

Committing crimes on the outside through other people.

Leif:

Oh, gossip girl writers.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

You

Leif:

think any of them has ever been in jail?

Leif:

They had bing at this point.

Leif:

They could look it up.

Steve:

They could.

Steve:

They could have bing it.

Leif:

So we move into act four.

Leif:

Blair and Serena convene at the party and briefly relate their respective

Leif:

plans to settle their Columbia business.

Leif:

As Serena goes to check in her purse, we see a nervous looking Vanessa,

Leif:

looking pointedly at the clutch.

Steve:

Yeah, not much to really say on this, just the,

Leif:

I'll say I this scene, and then later I, they did a very good

Leif:

job with camerawork following first the purse and then the cell phone.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Vanessa finds Julia in a quiet hallway with a story of how she got the CH coat

Leif:

check guy to give her Serena's purse.

Leif:

Vanessa quickly finds an email on the phone from Dan to Serena

Leif:

confirming that nothing more than a kiss happened When Vanessa tries to

Leif:

put the phone away, Juliet stops her.

Leif:

Juliet gets Vanessa to go stay on Lookout, leaving her alone with Serena's phone.

Leif:

Vanessa returns and thanks Juliet for her help.

Leif:

And then goes to take Dan home to Bone.

Leif:

Juliet puts Serena's phone in her own

Steve:

handbag, Vanessa's face when she sees that email.

Steve:

Like Vanessa's happiness.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And just, yeah.

Steve:

I, I just really, she just really nailed it.

Steve:

And then when Juliet's like, I think someone's coming.

Steve:

No, there's not.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

Vanessa, why would you fall for that?

Steve:

Like, because she's a fucking idiot.

Steve:

She really is.

Steve:

I feel like Vanessa is so on guard for the Upper East siders and the

Steve:

non-judging breakfast club to be trying to get one over on her that

Steve:

anyone else can get one over on her.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

As long as they're pointed in their direction.

Steve:

Especially Serena right now.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And yet another person who works behind a desk

Leif:

being a failure at their job.

Leif:

You just give this random person their purse like 30 seconds after

Leif:

the original person hands it to you.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yep.

Steve:

Another serious, another assistant.

Steve:

Serious.

Steve:

Another worker.

Steve:

Oh yeah.

Steve:

Here you go.

Steve:

She

Leif:

smiled at 'em.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And said,

Leif:

Serena needs it.

Leif:

A confident player finds Miss Chamberlain to introduce her to her date.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And marches her off.

Steve:

Introduces herself as her new assistant.

Leif:

As Vanessa's returning Serena's handbag to the code.

Leif:

Check if Dan and Nate surprise her from behind.

Leif:

Nate.

Leif:

Quila leaves to find Juliet and Dan is at first a bit confused by

Leif:

Vanessa's change of mood, but when she offers sex, he powers through.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Oh, you know what?

Steve:

It might take me all night to get over that.

Steve:

And, and again with the appetizers when she is like, we

Steve:

should fill up on appetizers.

Steve:

And Dan's like, bet,

Steve:

uh, like had you just taken off everything, you

Steve:

would've ended up being fine.

Steve:

And in a manner of speaking, for now anyway,

Leif:

both Blair and Ms. Chamberlain are surprised when the

Leif:

setup is a woman and not a man.

Leif:

Ms. Chamberlain is not pleased and tells Blair that her class is full for

Leif:

Chuck from across the room gives Blair a metaphorical wink, letting her know

Leif:

that he set her up and flicks the scarf.

Steve:

Yeah, he's wearing That's

Leif:

the, that's the metaphorical wink.

Leif:

Oh

Steve:

yeah, yeah, yeah.

Steve:

He, uh, swapped out the anticipated date for a woman.

Steve:

Awesome.

Steve:

Good job, guys.

Steve:

That's what you came up with.

Steve:

Writer's room.

Steve:

There we go.

Leif:

Serena finds her professor to talk to him about her tardiness.

Leif:

The professor happens to be with the dean who immediately starts growing

Leif:

Serena on an email from her account to the professor offering sex for grades.

Leif:

I guess we know a Juliet did with Serena's phone.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Now we knew.

Steve:

Know what she was doing with it.

Steve:

Great plan.

Steve:

Yeah, great plan.

Steve:

That would get it.

Steve:

That would get someone expelled.

Steve:

Why?

Steve:

And here's the thing, if you would've put the phone back into

Steve:

the case and disappeared, you may have had a better chance.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

You may have had a better Now, of course she still did get away with

Steve:

it by framing Vanessa, but if Serena had her phone on her when that

Steve:

went down, Vanessa, she expelled.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

She'd get expelled.

Steve:

Vanessa still may have tried to say something, but like, yeah, I guess that.

Leif:

Actually she probably made the smarter move.

Leif:

'cause 'cause yeah, 'cause Vanessa could have said something and then, yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And then it immediately goes to Juliet 'cause she was already

Leif:

trying to go after Serena.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

So that is probably, yeah, I, I, yeah.

Steve:

And probably wasn't even thought in the moment.

Steve:

So.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And we get gossip girls saying this

Leif:

spotted Serena Vander Woodson looking like she's hot for teacher.

Leif:

That's the thing with a good gaslight with enough smoke, who

Leif:

cares if there's really a fire.

Steve:

I actually did want to say that that was one of my favorite

Steve:

Gossip girl lines, that it's so true.

Steve:

And her whole job is spreading gossip and spreading rumors and nobody

Steve:

cares if there's an actual fire.

Steve:

If they see enough smoke.

Steve:

Yep.

Steve:

I, I really, again, the Gossip Girl quips were.

Steve:

Really good.

Steve:

And, and that one I feel like I personally, when she says spotted, I feel

Steve:

like that is more post than narration.

Steve:

That's kind of my head cannon.

Steve:

So I, I thought that was good.

Leif:

So we move into Act five.

Leif:

Vanessa fives Juliet and accuses her of sending the email from Serena's phone.

Leif:

Juliet of course, denies it, and Vanessa announces she's going to

Leif:

tell Serena that they had her phone.

Leif:

Juliet tries to stop her, but Vanessa is going to do the right thing.

Steve:

It is such a classic mistake, and they do it all the time in Gossip Girl, of

Steve:

telling the person you're going to tell.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

If you would've just not approached Juliet first and been like, oh shit, I

Steve:

see what's going down and gone right to Serena instead of stopping at Juliet.

Steve:

You're fine.

Leif:

Do you think Juliette is gonna go admit that she did it Well?

Leif:

No.

Leif:

No.

Leif:

I'm just, that says Vanessa, I'm not asking Vanessa

Steve:

right.

Steve:

Oh, right.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

She's not just gonna be like, oh yeah, you're right.

Leif:

Exactly.

Leif:

Blair assaults Chuck and the two go back and forth with their

Leif:

layers of blackmail fodder from Ms.

Leif:

Chamberlain.

Leif:

The shocked woman overhears the exchange and walks off letting the room at large

Leif:

know to tell the dean she's quitting.

Steve:

So once again, just wanna reiterate that they had many other angles that

Steve:

they could have gone with to do this whole plot because they list other

Steve:

angles that both of them had to make this a much more interesting intrigue.

Steve:

But all those angles play off of the first one.

Steve:

But you don't, but they didn't need that first one.

Steve:

Like you can just skip right to the IRS.

Steve:

But because

Leif:

you, you know, because they know there's gonna be a counterplan and

Leif:

then you need a counter plan of that.

Leif:

You need a counter plan of that.

Steve:

And, and where I feel like it would've when, when she brought up

Steve:

the husband the first scene, right?

Steve:

When she's like, I know about your husband, I know about the

Steve:

ex, I know about the nanny.

Steve:

And she brings all of that up.

Steve:

There is so much you can do with that right there.

Steve:

Like I have all of this info on the nanny, and then Chuck is like, well,

Steve:

I can come in and save the nanny.

Leif:

So the other thing is that the first thing Blair wants to, she wants

Leif:

to have a good relationship with this person, so why not try and help her first?

Steve:

Sure.

Steve:

Well that's what I'm saying, that come in and take down the nanny that, you know,

Steve:

stole the husband, come, come in with an angle of doing something to the husband

Steve:

to, you know, help the custody agreement.

Steve:

Help the divorce agreement, help the.

Steve:

The help get around the prenup.

Steve:

You know, maybe she has information on that.

Steve:

Both of them have such good skills behind this.

Steve:

There are so many, and, and it just felt, once again, writers trying to

Steve:

write for people smarter than they are.

Steve:

I hated that it was all about a man.

Steve:

I hated it.

Steve:

Sex sells Steve.

Steve:

It does, but you could make, uh, you could still make it sexy, is what I'm saying.

Steve:

And make it better.

Steve:

I guess what I'm really saying at the end of the day is that me as a, as a person

Steve:

watching tv, I do not believe that a powerful, uh, a powerful person brought

Steve:

into guest lecture at an Ivy League school is going to be wooed by a, by a

Steve:

sophomore saying, I can get you a date.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

You, you're thinking this as, as a sophomore.

Leif:

These, these people are adults.

Leif:

They're whole, they've been acting like adults since they were 12.

Leif:

I know, but

Steve:

you're right.

Steve:

And people treat them like adults, but they, but the people in their

Steve:

orbit treat them like adults.

Steve:

And the bartenders treat them like adults.

Steve:

But I just, and the men treat them like adults and the men treat them like adults.

Steve:

God damnit.

Steve:

Goddamn.

Steve:

I know what you're saying.

Steve:

I just hated it.

Leif:

The dean still doesn't believe Serena, when Serena shows

Leif:

her that the cell phone is missing from her purse, I mean, fair.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

My cell phone's not here.

Steve:

Okay.

Steve:

You yourself phone.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

You could very easily have, just hold this for me.

Steve:

Hey, hey, Dan.

Steve:

Hold this.

Steve:

Or look.

Steve:

Or, or you just didn't bring yourself there.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Or, yeah.

Steve:

Or you lost it anyway.

Steve:

Although if you didn't bring, or you threw it in the trash can

Steve:

again, or you threw it in the trash.

Steve:

Although not having it there.

Steve:

If, if it was at home.

Steve:

Would make it so she couldn't have sent that email when it was sent.

Leif:

Juliet makes a last ditch effort to stop Vanessa from confessing, but

Leif:

as Juliette grabs Vanessa's arm, she drops the cell phone in Vanessa's bag.

Steve:

Yeah, smooth.

Steve:

Yeah, so smooth.

Steve:

And I think one of the things that I was irritated why before that little

Steve:

light bulb in my head, why I was irritated with Juliet a lot of the

Steve:

time is I'm waiting for her to get caught and everybody gets, you know,

Steve:

by now, people's schemes are blown up and, and so her scheme is still going

Steve:

with it only got blown up a little bit.

Steve:

And, and so I now it's like, okay, now I'm interested.

Steve:

I'm a little bit more engaged in this story with act how she behaved tonight.

Leif:

Dan, Julia and Vanessa all walk up to Serena and the dean

Leif:

and Julia suggested Serena call her own phone when Serena does.

Leif:

So Vanessa's bag starts ringing.

Leif:

Dan and Serena immediately go after Vanessa and Serena even accuses her of

Leif:

starting the SDD rumor in the first place.

Leif:

When Vanessa tries to shift the blame to Juliet, she just denies it.

Leif:

Nate Corroborates Juliet's story.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Diabolical on layers.

Steve:

She goes to Nate ahead of time before the party and says,

Steve:

Vanessa's planning something.

Steve:

Yeah, like, damn.

Steve:

And the way that she walks up is like, call your phone Serena and just drops it.

Steve:

Right on.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Perfect.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Steve:

Perfect.

Leif:

And Gossip Girl has this to say, Hey.

Leif:

Or V didn't she know that in love and war, a friend and need is

Leif:

willing to do the most any deed?

Steve:

And I, I felt for her when Dan is like, I don't know what to believe

Steve:

right now, especially when she is like, after everything, I need you to trust me.

Steve:

And he's like, I don't know.

Steve:

I, I thought that was a little bit shitty because of how much he's asked

Steve:

her for trust, but she's also been not

Leif:

trusting him.

Leif:

Not trusting him.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And we go into the epilogue.

Leif:

Serena is having a private conversation with the dean.

Leif:

The dean believes Serena didn't send the email out, but is concerned

Leif:

about the level of drama that has followed Serena to campus.

Leif:

The dean advises Serena to rethink her priorities.

Leif:

As Blair walks up, the dean says she has her eye on Blair as well.

Steve:

The fact that the dean brought up the STI, rumor to Serena,

Steve:

are you gonna start expelling people for STIs from Columbia?

Steve:

Because I've got a I've you're gonna lose about 25% right off the bat.

Leif:

Also, isn't her like reputation how she got into college anyways, right?

Leif:

Yeah, she got in.

Leif:

Yeah, it wasn't on merit.

Leif:

I guess that was just Yale apparently, right?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

She got, she got into Columbia 'cause her dad was an alumnus.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

So it wasn't the paparazzi, it was, it was only, it was Yale

Steve:

that wanted the, wanted the drama.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Apparently.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

Oh my God.

Steve:

It, it was just, I, and I hate the whole, like I am, the dean has his eye on you.

Steve:

The dean has her eye on you.

Steve:

Plot line.

Steve:

'cause it's like, again.

Steve:

You had a great high school show for two years, and then you had a great

Steve:

college show for a year, and now we have another high school show again.

Steve:

And I like the college show better.

Steve:

Uh, not even better.

Steve:

I like the evolution into the college thing.

Steve:

I wouldn't even mind it if they dropped out or half of them dropped out and

Steve:

we're like, college isn't for me.

Steve:

Sort of like with Buffy, how you have one season of her in college and then

Steve:

the rest of the time she drops out.

Steve:

That's okay,

Leif:

but

Steve:

just

Leif:

stop being high school is all.

Leif:

We get a quick conversation with Blair and Serena.

Leif:

Blair says, gossip girl put a hit out on whoever sent the false

Leif:

tip about Serena having an STI.

Leif:

Serena tells Blair that it was Vanessa.

Steve:

Yeah, I mean, all evidence.

Steve:

I get it.

Steve:

Serena and Blair's, like, that'll only boost her social standing.

Steve:

Like, oh, that's, that's not someone you want gossip of girl taking down.

Leif:

I mean, that goes back to, again, to the season one where Blair

Leif:

was trying to threaten Vanessa and what are you gonna threaten me with?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

You can't really exile me from, you know, your being girl click.

Leif:

'cause I'm not part of it.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I don't want, and nor do I want to be as Blair leaves to go confront

Leif:

Chuck who she spots drinking alone.

Leif:

And Juliet comes over to talk to Serena.

Leif:

And Juliet apologizes for being an asshole to Serena at first.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Plays her perfectly.

Leif:

Just plays

Steve:

her.

Steve:

I was just jealous.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

I was jealous.

Steve:

And now I've seen my error of the error of my ways, plays it perfectly.

Leif:

Chuck tells Blair that tonight was just a warmup.

Leif:

He is going to be there every time she wants something to take it away.

Leif:

When Blair once again says she's over, Chuck.

Leif:

The lady do protest too much.

Leif:

He thinks Chuck threatens to reveal to the world why they didn't get back together.

Steve:

I'm so, I'm over this Chuck and Blair drama bullshit.

Steve:

Just fuck off each other.

Steve:

Just get over it.

Steve:

Although I like this, the banter's great.

Steve:

The banter is great.

Steve:

The banter is great.

Steve:

The cat and mouse is tried.

Leif:

Dan finds a packed up Vanessa at the loft.

Leif:

Vanessa is going to stay with her parents for a while.

Leif:

Dan agrees that it's good they spend some time apart.

Leif:

He believes that she didn't send the email.

Leif:

But now the problem is that she didn't believe him.

Leif:

They say a tearful goodbye.

Leif:

This

Steve:

one got me.

Steve:

'cause I actually thought that Dan would go back and

Steve:

believe her and I for a second.

Steve:

And he And he did?

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

And he did.

Steve:

And I thought that that would be enough to work it out.

Steve:

And when he's like, no, like, 'cause you, because you didn't believe me.

Steve:

And it's like.

Steve:

I can't be fault him for that, you know?

Steve:

And, and you know, vulture said the thing about, he's just kind of

Steve:

ambivalent about the relationship and I feel like that's also true.

Steve:

I feel like when Dan was kind of in last week and the week before when he was

Steve:

in this Vanessa Serena decision that he was making, it was, I don't want

Steve:

the drama of the Serena relationship.

Steve:

I just want the nice smooth sailing relationship.

Steve:

But the Serena drama got into it anyway because Vanessa got wrapped up into it.

Steve:

And so I can understand Dan being like, you not sending the

Steve:

email, is you sending the email?

Steve:

Isn't the issue you stealing her phone because you needed to know is the issue,

Leif:

the good looking cabs?

Leif:

The stealer finds Serena drinking alone at the bar.

Leif:

He suggested.

Leif:

Serena's still playing hard to get, but he gets her to open up a little.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yep.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

She clearly went there to f to find him.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Obviously.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

But act surprised when he shows up.

Leif:

Uh, you have your PR pattern, Serena.

Leif:

Yes, it is very similar to that.

Leif:

When the whole trip and Serena thing started.

Steve:

Yes,

Leif:

you're

Steve:

right.

Steve:

When they were sitting at the bar after the election.

Leif:

Yep.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

Also, I can't help but wonder this guy is stalking Serena.

Steve:

This is an older guy.

Steve:

Is he tied to Ben?

Steve:

Somehow is another, is one of my big questions.

Steve:

I had that thought at the end of the episode of this guy's also

Steve:

helping get Serena expelled.

Steve:

This guy is the reason Serena has been late to class all of these times that, and

Steve:

she couldn't leave five minutes earlier.

Steve:

She leaves just in time to just barely get to class as soon as a cab gets there.

Steve:

All that aside, when the rest of the time they just fast fab travel around the city.

Steve:

But all this time this guy is sabotaging her college, her college career.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

So I kind

Leif:

of wondered if they're working together.

Leif:

Definitely An interesting point, Ben is having another

Leif:

late night call with Juliet.

Leif:

He was upset that Juliet changed the plan and Serena didn't get expelled.

Leif:

He is somewhat placated by the fact that Juliet has made her way

Leif:

into Serena's confidence, but he suspects the real reason she changed

Leif:

the plan was to protect Nate.

Steve:

Yep.

Steve:

I think it's because the real reason she changed the plan was to protect Nate.

Steve:

So I think his suspicions are onto something

Leif:

because as we see possibly proving Ben's theory, we see Julia walking

Leif:

into Nate's bedroom wearing lingerie.

Leif:

The two get down with the get down.

Steve:

Yep.

Steve:

It does not look like the four day waiting period was still in order.

Steve:

Just once again, Juliet, he did bang a lot of women this summer.

Steve:

You

Leif:

were?

Leif:

And he told her.

Leif:

Told her about it too.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

You were right.

Leif:

That's That's how you met.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

Yeah, exactly.

Steve:

That's how you met.

Steve:

So you were right to have him get tested and you were right

Steve:

to wait to sleep with him until after you got those test results.

Steve:

So Yeah.

Leif:

But she wasn't really worried about him having STDs.

Leif:

It was just all about Serena.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

Exactly.

Leif:

And it was very awkward looking.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

They didn't have very good chemistry.

Leif:

No.

Leif:

We see Chuck standing by his limo, make a call to someone to set

Leif:

up an interview for with Jenny.

Leif:

With Tim Gunn.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

I love that.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And Taylor Buley

Steve:

continues to be in the man cast credits.

Steve:

I, yes.

Steve:

She's still in the cast credits.

Steve:

And Tim Gunn dropping the name of Tim Gunn, who.

Steve:

Belongs on this show right at this point.

Steve:

Tim Gunn should be on this show and

Leif:

Gossip.

Leif:

Girls Closing Monologue goes.

Leif:

The Law of Affinity refers to unlikely compositions forming a bond through

Leif:

purely chemical reaction, but even the strongest bonds have their

Leif:

limits and when broken, that if left unchecked explode like a nuclear bomb.

Leif:

Waiting for the Fallout.

Leif:

Xo.

Leif:

Xo.

Leif:

Gossip Girl.

Leif:

Yep.

Leif:

What is coming next?

Steve:

Okay, first of all, Dan is single and Blair is vulnerable.

Steve:

Do we finally get.

Steve:

Our dare relationship or something sparked here.

Steve:

I feel like it's a good opportunity.

Steve:

I also believe, well, especially because I'm pretty sure

Steve:

we're gonna see Jenny again.

Steve:

I, I think we're gonna see I, I saw the episode title for next week and

Steve:

that the one line description on the HBO thing, which we'll get to at the

Steve:

end, which I tend not to read those, but today it just caught my eye.

Steve:

So I do anticipate we see Jenny again and there's a big blow up there.

Steve:

So that can also drive Dan and Blair together.

Steve:

I think.

Steve:

Wouldn't that blow driving apart though?

Steve:

I feel like, well, if she's gunning for Jenny, it depends on if she's

Steve:

gunning for Jenny or gunning for Chuck.

Steve:

'cause Dan could gun for Chuck pretty easily too, I feel.

Steve:

Anyway.

Steve:

I feel like they'll be in each other's orbit is the biggest thing I.

Steve:

Serena's gonna be in an inappropriate relationship with an inappropriately

Steve:

older man and that's gonna play out.

Steve:

And that guy, I do think that that guy's up to something.

Steve:

My current prediction, just so I'll be right if it happens, is that he is

Steve:

tied to Ben somehow and working with them to also tear everything down

Steve:

despite the fact that along the way he's gonna catch feelings for Serena.

Steve:

That's my prediction there, and that's what I got.

Steve:

I think this week I feel like he already caught feelings for Serena.

Steve:

If he's, if he's part of Ben's scheme, I could see that being an act is

Steve:

kind of where I'm going with that.

Leif:

Yes, he did, uh, have that same smart smile the day after

Leif:

raping his wife and madman.

Leif:

Damn.

Steve:

Anything else?

Steve:

I don't think so.

Steve:

Other than a Tim Gunn.

Steve:

Guest appearance, but will anyone get expelled from Columbia?

Steve:

I don't think so.

Steve:

If they do, I don't think it'll be Dip Blair or Serena.

Steve:

I think that, I think Chuck is gonna find other ways to take things away

Steve:

from Blair that she wants, but I don't think, I don't think that either of that.

Steve:

I don't think anyone's getting expelled from Columbia.

Leif:

Well, let's get into segments.

Leif:

This week in fandom, we traveled in the way back machine to

Leif:

the fan forums from 2010.

Peabody:

Hello there.

Peabody:

Peabody here, and this is the way back machine.

Peabody:

We're traveling through time and this is my boy chairman speak.

Peabody:

Chairman.

Peabody:

Hello.

Peabody:

Good boy.

Leif:

Overall, another bad episode.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Dan and Nader adorable.

Steve:

Yes,

Leif:

they made the episode.

Steve:

I, I really felt Dan carried a lot in this episode.

Leif:

Juliette is a top level manipulator and has possibly suppressed Georgina

Leif:

as the best villain on the show.

Steve:

I think Georgina is a more fun villain because she is unhinged

Steve:

and a wild card, whereas Juliette is manipulative and thoughtful.

Steve:

I do agree that she is turning into a phenomenal villain.

Leif:

The new guy is hot, but smarmy.

Steve:

Yeah, I mean that's probably what they looked for in the casting.

Steve:

It's probably the exact casting call, hot smarmy, 30 something male to date,

Steve:

a teenager to stalk and date a teenager.

Leif:

People actually felt a bit sorry for Vanessa.

Steve:

Yeah, I felt so.

Steve:

I felt really sorry for Vanessa.

Leif:

I,

Steve:

I it, yeah,

Leif:

absolutely.

Leif:

The Nate and Juliet sex scene was very awkward.

Leif:

Yep.

Leif:

And finally, does Dan just go to Columbia now?

Leif:

Is the NY u's just gone and they just, they haven't showed

Leif:

it one time this season?

Leif:

No.

Steve:

Dan and Vanessa, both just, you know, at Hamilton house, at the Secret

Steve:

Society of a different university,

Leif:

uh,

Leif:

let's get into episode grades.

Leif:

It is your week to go first.

Steve:

Better than last week.

Steve:

I wasn't bored.

Steve:

It was still a bad episode.

Steve:

I'm giving it a solid middle of the Road Sea this week.

Steve:

Okay.

Leif:

Yeah, definitely better than last week.

Leif:

I thought the directing was good.

Leif:

A lot of the acting was really good.

Leif:

Jessica had her best episode of the series.

Leif:

I thought of the series.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Um, so I ended up landing on a B minus.

Steve:

That's fair.

Steve:

Because, because you were like a c last

Leif:

week.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Like the, the story was stupid, but I thought it was well executed

Steve:

that I, I completely agree with that.

Steve:

E especially the directing and really the only part that I didn't, that I wasn't

Steve:

behind was the Blair Chuck storyline.

Steve:

That that storyline was the one that rubbed me the wrong way.

Leif:

But if, if I was a chair shipper, I would like that storyline.

Leif:

That's fair.

:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I was for a while.

Leif:

I'm just over them.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I, I'm over them as a couple, at least for now.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

But yeah.

Leif:

A lot of people never got off the wagon and that if I was still

Leif:

shipping them, that would be fun.

Leif:

'cause they, their banter was great and they're, yeah.

Leif:

Clearly still in love with each other.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

My, I'm just shipping date right now.

Steve:

The Dan Nate relationship.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Moving over to Stockwatch.

Leif:

Who do you have going up?

Steve:

I had Dan going up.

Steve:

Yes, he breaks up with Vanessa, but I also think that that is the

Steve:

direction he needed to go anyway.

Steve:

And, uh, aside from that, I feel like he had a great episode and handled

Steve:

everything thrown at him pretty well.

Steve:

I had Nate going up because in addition to getting the girl that he thinks

Steve:

he's getting, I, I think she's actually fallen for him at this point and he

Steve:

doesn't know he is getting played.

Steve:

And I feel like he, because of that, kind of had a good episode, I had.

Steve:

I had rufuss going up.

Steve:

Good parenting to Dan as, as per usual.

Steve:

And I believe, oh, Juliet.

Steve:

And I'm gonna have Juliet and Ben go up 'cause their plan is currently working.

Steve:

And creepy guy.

Steve:

Uh, you said his name is Colin?

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

I'll give Colin an up for Ming his way into Serena's thoughts?

Leif:

Uh, for me, I had Chuck going up 'cause he took away, uh,

Leif:

that assistantship from Blair.

Leif:

I was, I was on the fence on Chuck.

Leif:

I mean, he, he didn't, he didn't actually want that.

Leif:

He just, he wanted to take it away from where, so No, no.

Steve:

Chuck definitely made out.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

I, you know what, I'm gonna bump Chuck.

Steve:

I was really on the fence because I felt like he didn't really go

Steve:

much of anywhere other than just.

Steve:

Against Blair, but that was his whole goal.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Uh, Juliet.

Leif:

'cause she continues to win.

Leif:

I'm not really counting bet as a character yet 'cause she, he's kind

Leif:

of working through her at the moment.

Leif:

That's fair.

Leif:

Uh, rufuss 'cause he was a good parent.

Leif:

And Colin, 'cause he's apparently gonna bang Serena.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Eventually.

Steve:

Who do you have going down?

Steve:

I have Serena going down and not just on the smarmy guy, but because now the

Steve:

dean has her eye on her after she really did just get shit on this whole episode.

Steve:

It's, it's one of those times that I almost feel bad giving the Serena down

Steve:

because she, it just happened to her.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Like for all the times it all bad mouthed Serena.

Steve:

She just got shit on this episode.

Steve:

Mm-hmm.

Steve:

Vanessa obviously going down.

Steve:

Are we getting a break from Vanessa now that she's at her parents' house?

Steve:

I'm, I'm wondering, I forget.

Steve:

Um, but yeah, Vanessa definitely going down, Blair going

Steve:

down, missing out on the.

Steve:

Assistant role and just losing to Chuck.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

So those are my

Leif:

All right.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So I had Blair going down because yeah, she lost the assistantship and you

Leif:

know, losing to Chuck and just, you know, losing in general Serena 'cause

Leif:

Yeah, she got shit on all episode.

Leif:

I had Nate and Dan go both going down.

Leif:

Um, Nate was again really cold, the Serena and was ready to jump

Leif:

in to defend Juliet and is still getting played by her, uh, Dan.

Leif:

'cause he did lose the woman he said he loved last week, so, and

Leif:

Vanessa 'cause yeah, she got dumped.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

It is now helpless.

Steve:

Yes.

Steve:

miniskirt with the blue blouse and the turquoise Leif necklace thing she had on.
