Shownotes

Grief can be exhausting. It can make life feel heavy, drain your motivation, and sometimes even make laughter feel inappropriate.

But joy and grief are not opposites.

In this episode, Vickie and Cindy talk about the importance of allowing yourself to experience fun, laughter, and simple pleasures again after loss. Ecclesiastes 3:4 reminds us that there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh,” and sometimes both can exist in the very same day.

They share how laughter and fun can give your heart a much-needed rest from grief, reduce stress, restore energy, strengthen relationships, and help you reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been buried beneath loss.

Fun may look different now than it did when your husband was alive—and that’s okay. It might be coffee with a friend, taking a walk, playing a game, dancing to an old song, feeding the birds, working on a craft, swimming, learning something new, or simply doing something that makes you smile.

You may even feel guilty the first time you realize you are enjoying yourself again. But experiencing joy does not mean you loved your husband any less or that your grief is over. It simply means you are allowing yourself to keep living.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why laughter and grief can exist together
  • How fun can reduce stress and restore motivation
  • Letting go of guilt about enjoying life again
  • Rediscovering childhood interests and old hobbies
  • Finding new things that bring you joy
  • Taking small steps when you don’t even know what sounds fun anymore
  • How your own joy can encourage other widows
  • Trusting God to help lead you into a new season of life

Sometimes laughter really can be medicine for a grieving heart.

You don’t have to wait until the grief is completely gone before you allow yourself to smile again. Start small. Try something. Call a friend. Take the drive. Get the ice cream cone. Turn on the music.

And give yourself permission to enjoy the life that is still in front of you.
