Recently I ran into someone who had chosen some bold colors for her home only to find that they were WAY too much for her space. I’m Dan Hansen and this is a Minute at RepcoLite.
What was most confusing to her about this was that she had see pictures of the colors in various rooms and they all looked great. Then she saw the colors in her room and it was like the face of the sun. What happened?
One single word: Scale. Looking at photos online, or in magazines, or in the literature pieces of paint companies only lets you see the color on a small scale and on a single plane. Yes, it’s a room you’re looking at . . . but it’s not your room. Meaning, you’re not in it. When it’s a picture, It’s small and it’s in front of you only.
When the same color is on your walls, it’s much bigger. And now, it’s all around you–not just in front of you on one plane. You’re immersed in it. And that scale–that amount of color–makes colors brighter, bolder, louder, stronger. And that’s where we end up overwhelmed and surprised that something that looked great on a photo, burns out our retinas in real life. Tomorrow we’ll talk about some workarounds.
