Jonathan Plisco and Jarod Brown join Mike and Gary to talk about ODU's 28-20 loss to Appalachian State.

Transcripts

Speaker:

The following presentation is brought to you by the pride of ODU, the official

Speaker:

NIL collective of Old Dominion Athletics.

Speaker:

Be a Monarchist.

Speaker:

Join the pride.

Speaker:

Monarch Nation.

Speaker:

We are back to talk about Old Dominion's trip to Boone.

Speaker:

Uh, Old Dominion loses 28 to 20.

Speaker:

But there's a lot more to the story.

Speaker:

Uh, but first we, uh, I got to greet you, Gary, but I also, we have some

Speaker:

special guests joining us today.

Speaker:

First up, uh, old dominion hall of famer and former football player, Jonathan

Speaker:

Plisco, and former ODU kicker and likely future hall of famer, Jarod Brown.

Speaker:

Let's add them to the stage.

Speaker:

How y'all doing fellas?

Speaker:

Doing great.

Speaker:

What's going on?

Speaker:

Glad to be back.

Speaker:

Yeah, thanks for that intro too, because I'm hoping, but you never know.

Speaker:

I mean, you still got the longest kick in ODU history, right?

Speaker:

You have the most points in ODU history, right?

Speaker:

And it'll likely never be touched because we'll never have another

Speaker:

Taylor Heinicke at the school.

Speaker:

We're never going to kick 73 extra points in a season again.

Speaker:

Is that what you're saying?

Speaker:

unlikely.

Speaker:

No, I agree.

Speaker:

Even all that.

Speaker:

I mean, I think it's pretty safe to say you should be a Hall of Famer.

Speaker:

Uh, eventually.

Speaker:

Well, thank you.

Speaker:

Hey, don't forget that that isn't tracked.

Speaker:

Probably most onside kicks.

Speaker:

Uh, we had quite a few every year coming out of jail.

Speaker:

So best defense was an onside kick.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

Definitely.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So We went down to Boone.

Speaker:

Uh, everyone thought, I mean, this is the, this is our chance

Speaker:

to take control of this division.

Speaker:

Um, it didn't happen for us, but, um, I don't know where to start.

Speaker:

Where do you want to start Gary?

Speaker:

Well, first I'll say I feel guilty because I did not go down to Boone,

Speaker:

was not able to go this weekend.

Speaker:

So that snaps the, uh, the streak we had going.

Speaker:

If I did the post game presser, they won.

Speaker:

So we'll, we'll get that back going again with JMU and Marshall and then, you know,

Speaker:

I'll figure something out for Jonesboro, Arkansas at the end of the year.

Speaker:

But I think, I mean, we can look at this game and probably say we should have won.

Speaker:

We were the better team on the field.

Speaker:

I think you just look at the box score.

Speaker:

We won that game.

Speaker:

But turnovers, sacks, just little bits of execution down there

Speaker:

at the end cost us this one.

Speaker:

It stinks, but it could have been worse.

Speaker:

Yeah, that second half.

Speaker:

I mean, scoring three points in the entire second half.

Speaker:

I mean, that's kind of the story.

Speaker:

We had control of this game in the second quarter.

Speaker:

Uh, we're up 17 7 at one point and final score is 28 20.

Speaker:

Um, kind of tells the story.

Speaker:

Offense was extremely effective yesterday.

Speaker:

Isiah Paige deserves all the kudos.

Speaker:

Uh, that was the most impressive water steerer performance I've

Speaker:

seen at ODU in a very long time.

Speaker:

He was a workhorse.

Speaker:

We had some good ones, but maybe ever.

Speaker:

That was insane.

Speaker:

Yeah, he tied the record for receptions in a game, um, briefly held by Ali

Speaker:

Jennings, both with 16 catches.

Speaker:

So, um, who was that against for all either?

Speaker:

There's against Western Kentucky.

Speaker:

So both competitive, both good teams, they played against the 250, 205 yards.

Speaker:

Um, just seemed like whenever we need to play yesterday,

Speaker:

he was out there to make it.

Speaker:

And yeah, we call his number.

Speaker:

He'd, uh, He'd step up, make a play.

Speaker:

Uh, it was definitely, uh, exciting to see and obviously didn't get the result

Speaker:

we wanted, but it was, uh, impressive performance, especially in the first half.

Speaker:

They were moving him around on the field quite a good bit too.

Speaker:

I know early on he was kind of on the outside getting those, those

Speaker:

quick hitters, the bubble screens.

Speaker:

He was able to get past a few.

Speaker:

I think there was some really good blocking from the wide receivers and

Speaker:

from Pat Conroy in front of him just to give him a little bit of space because.

Speaker:

I mean, that dude is quick.

Speaker:

We've been watching him be quick for, for quite a while now.

Speaker:

Uh, but to see him get just the tiniest bit of separation and break some big ones

Speaker:

for us and then come out of the slot over the middle, a couple of times as well,

Speaker:

we hadn't seen him do that in a couple of games, but just overall awesome game

Speaker:

for page glad to see him get some flowers against someone who's been a thorn in

Speaker:

his side for the most part in his career.

Speaker:

Now, uh, I've seen a lot of criticisms levied on the defense for

Speaker:

not getting off the field enough.

Speaker:

Um, But I think the credit really should go towards Joey Aguilar.

Speaker:

That was one of the most impressive performances I've seen in the

Speaker:

Sun Belt since we've joined.

Speaker:

Um, he either was killing us with his feet or he was making throws that were,

Speaker:

could only be caught by the receiver.

Speaker:

Like coverage was amazing, didn't matter, right in the basket.

Speaker:

Just throwing dots all night long.

Speaker:

Uh, so we got to have to give credit to how well Joey Aguilar

Speaker:

and his receivers played yesterday.

Speaker:

Cause they were phenomenal.

Speaker:

He only completed 13 passes and four were for touchdowns.

Speaker:

It's not, not bad for efficiency there.

Speaker:

Yeah, I would like this.

Speaker:

Uh, they, they definitely showed up, made the big plays on a matter.

Speaker:

And as you mentioned, how you are, are just.

Speaker:

Yeah, his stat line isn't super impressive, but the faking, uh,

Speaker:

I mean, just tremendous throws there when he needed them.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

I don't know.

Speaker:

I need to give shout out to all of the ODE fans.

Speaker:

So we, we, we unveiled the monarch a few weeks ago, early in the

Speaker:

season, the collaboration beer with afterglow and the pride of ODU

Speaker:

sold out of the kegs very quickly.

Speaker:

Thanks to.

Speaker:

Great ODU fans like Jarod and Jonathan But the cans are officially sold out.

Speaker:

So we've sold out all of it.

Speaker:

They have to make a new batch Because of how awesome ODU fans are so thank you to

Speaker:

everyone that pitched in and bought the beer it's much appreciated and We're gonna

Speaker:

make more and the t shirt is in the works.

Speaker:

So good things are happening there But let's get back to this game.

Speaker:

Uh, Colton, Joseph, freshman.

Speaker:

Pretty phenomenal yesterday.

Speaker:

Um, despite the turnovers, um, just

Speaker:

332 yards passing career high, 27 completions, career high,

Speaker:

uh, 65 yards on the ground.

Speaker:

Um, he is showing us, it's kind of why I'm kind of conflicted talking

Speaker:

about this game because Losing sucks.

Speaker:

It's disappointing that we couldn't hold and control this

Speaker:

division race going forward.

Speaker:

But his play is just giving us hope.

Speaker:

And now we know that any given week we should win or we should have a chance

Speaker:

to win because we have a quarterback that's put us in that position.

Speaker:

And it's really nice to have that after all these years of kind of going through

Speaker:

back and forth to all these quarterbacks.

Speaker:

They just weren't the answer.

Speaker:

Yeah, I'll, uh, I was waiting to kind of hop on on that one.

Speaker:

Uh, I think my internet's being a little funny here, but

Speaker:

yeah, the it sucks to lose.

Speaker:

Uh, but it was a hard fought game.

Speaker:

You look at the stat line.

Speaker:

We should have won.

Speaker:

App State had those key plays, had more key plays than we did.

Speaker:

We lost the game.

Speaker:

But the fact that We have an offense.

Speaker:

I mean, you look at all facets of the offense, whether it was a read option,

Speaker:

uh, power running this, this bubble screens, deep passing, like we have

Speaker:

all those options available, uh, which, you know, for the past couple of years,

Speaker:

we've been a little, uh, not as dynamic.

Speaker:

So we have that capability to hit a team.

Speaker:

However, we need to to win the game.

Speaker:

Obviously we didn't, uh, but just to have that, that potential there, uh,

Speaker:

it's, it's really exciting again.

Speaker:

Uh, never want to see a loss, uh, on the schedule, but, uh, just to see how we came

Speaker:

out on offense and, and, you know, even defense, sure they, they put 28 on us,

Speaker:

but considering the sacks, considering the turnovers, we had the positions

Speaker:

they were put in, uh, again, they've continued to show up as they needed to.

Speaker:

And it's hard when Aguilar is dropping that ball and where

Speaker:

they can't do anything about it.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Uh, I mean, it was competitive game, uh, definitely disappointing to take

Speaker:

the loss, but you know, that point we're fighting, it's great to see it's, it's

Speaker:

very exciting, but, uh, you know, I'm excited for the rest of the season.

Speaker:

See what the boys can do.

Speaker:

I felt a little better about this game until the fourth quarter of Georgia

Speaker:

Southern and South Alabama last night.

Speaker:

Because I was thinking, all right, if Georgia Southern loses, we

Speaker:

still control our own destiny.

Speaker:

We went our last three, we went in the East, we're in the Sunbelt

Speaker:

championship game, and then the Eagles put up 20 straight points in the

Speaker:

fourth quarter to beat South Alabama.

Speaker:

And they've got Troy coastal and app state is the last three on their schedule.

Speaker:

We need them to lose because we have the tiebreaker.

Speaker:

Um, so it, it stings more than I was hoping it would.

Speaker:

But we still have the ability to go beat JMU, beat Marshall, beat Arkansas State.

Speaker:

And then we just need Georgia Southern to slip once.

Speaker:

So it's like, not all hope is lost.

Speaker:

I mean, we outgained them, we out everything.

Speaker:

Just gotta tidy up that little execution piece, and it's a

Speaker:

perfect time for a bye week.

Speaker:

Yeah, I agree with all of it.

Speaker:

I think that, uh, In any sports situation, but football and specifically 120 guys

Speaker:

on the other team in college football are preparing just like we're preparing,

Speaker:

they're, they're doing all the things that we're doing every single week.

Speaker:

And when they come out and make those big plays, that's their job.

Speaker:

That's what they're supposed to do.

Speaker:

So I don't feel as bad this time when we lose, because they did their

Speaker:

job a couple more times than we did.

Speaker:

We played really well, we did our job most of the game, and then those little

Speaker:

plays, they happen, and it's really tough to, to say, oh, we, we could have

Speaker:

won here, we could have won there, we should have done this better, because

Speaker:

they're doing the exact same things that we're doing, and it was a really

Speaker:

good game, it was a hard fought game, and we could have won it, we probably

Speaker:

should have won it, like we've said.

Speaker:

It didn't happen this time.

Speaker:

It sucks that it happens to app state.

Speaker:

Cause at app state, it just feels like it always just doesn't go our way.

Speaker:

I mean, it doesn't, we haven't won there.

Speaker:

Um, but I think it was a good game.

Speaker:

I'm not devastated that we lost.

Speaker:

I still think like you said, Gary, we, we, uh, we control the last three games.

Speaker:

We got to win all three of them.

Speaker:

We control our own destiny in that.

Speaker:

And then I don't think Georgia Southern is going to do it.

Speaker:

Let's be honest.

Speaker:

I don't think Georgia Southern is going to win all three games.

Speaker:

That's just the optimist in me.

Speaker:

That's the ODU fan in me, but I don't think they're going to do it.

Speaker:

So I think if we win the last three, then, you know, we'll be there.

Speaker:

I think we had to be just become app state fans.

Speaker:

The rest of the season, seriously, they're out of the race.

Speaker:

If they just go and knock off the teams on their schedule, we're looking better.

Speaker:

And they played Georgia Southern in the last week of the season, right?

Speaker:

Yes, they do.

Speaker:

And Coastal, I mean, this Coastal is a tough team.

Speaker:

You know, they're not, they're not going to be a slouch for Georgia Southern.

Speaker:

That's going to be a really tough game.

Speaker:

Coastal doesn't want to lose.

Speaker:

They're not going to go in there thinking we, we want to, we want

Speaker:

Georgia Southern to go instead of ODU.

Speaker:

They don't care.

Speaker:

They couldn't care less.

Speaker:

All they want to do is win.

Speaker:

They're going to be a tough game for Georgia Southern as well.

Speaker:

So, and Troy seems to be figuring something out.

Speaker:

Like they beat, uh, they beat Coastal at home on Friday.

Speaker:

So they, believe me, they're not going to lay off for app state.

Speaker:

They're not exactly Appalachian state fans.

Speaker:

Uh, so we'll see, but it stinks that we have to now depend on that because we

Speaker:

went Saturday, we control everything.

Speaker:

Uh, but if we were going to lose one, if, if you told me, all right, one of these

Speaker:

last three East games, you have to lose, I would have picked app state because

Speaker:

the tiebreaker is not likely to matter.

Speaker:

Like if we lose the JMU, we effectively dropped two below them.

Speaker:

Same thing for Marshall.

Speaker:

So if we had to lose one more East game, I'm glad it was the one that.

Speaker:

It's not gonna hurt us too badly later on.

Speaker:

And also, everyone hates JMU, so we don't wanna lose that game.

Speaker:

That's Oh yeah.

Speaker:

. Just, just add it to the giant pile of reasons.

Speaker:

We gotta beat JMU this year.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We need this one.

Speaker:

And we have to be, and we have to beat Marshall 'cause they're three

Speaker:

in one of the conference as well.

Speaker:

Mm-Hmm.

Speaker:

. Yeah.

Speaker:

Mm-Hmm.

Speaker:

. So, yeah, it's, well, uh, there's a reason why App State was picked.

Speaker:

They were picked first in the East, correct?

Speaker:

And the preseason goals.

Speaker:

I know they didn't get the start they wanted, but I think we all

Speaker:

saw the team that they have.

Speaker:

And I think, you know, they won last week.

Speaker:

They won, you know, obviously this week against us.

Speaker:

I think they're, they're definitely trending up and

Speaker:

showing the team that they can be.

Speaker:

So, uh, I think, uh, in addition to, uh, the final, uh, against Arkansas

Speaker:

state, uh, we'll, I think we'll all be watching, uh, the Georgia

Speaker:

Southern app state game as well.

Speaker:

Uh, pretty interested in the outcome of that, but should be a good one.

Speaker:

App States defensive line was nastier than I anticipated, especially when

Speaker:

they got it, we got into situations where they knew we were throwing it

Speaker:

and they would only send three or four.

Speaker:

I mean, they were mauling dudes up front.

Speaker:

Like if they're getting it together on the D line, their O line seemed a lot more

Speaker:

patched up than it was a few games ago.

Speaker:

They didn't give up any sacks.

Speaker:

Uh, if they're starting to figure out their trenches, they've always had

Speaker:

the skill players to go and do it.

Speaker:

So we can root for them to be spoilers.

Speaker:

Just the rest of the way, ruin everyone else's season since they've

Speaker:

already put a, put a notch in ours.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

One thing I picked up early on in the game, I think it was

Speaker:

maybe the first or second drive.

Speaker:

Uh, I saw the way they're online.

Speaker:

So they had their forward linemen, they had two linebackers, then they

Speaker:

had everyone else in the secondary.

Speaker:

Very first snap I saw, one of their safeties immediately shade over to the

Speaker:

middle of the field after the snap.

Speaker:

I go, alright.

Speaker:

They were taking away the middle of the field after we used it

Speaker:

to obliterate Georgia Southern.

Speaker:

Mhm.

Speaker:

And it changed how we had to play them the entire game because we had to

Speaker:

focus on the outside of the numbers.

Speaker:

And it's why page is so valuable yesterday because we had to

Speaker:

attack the outside because the middle was taken away yesterday.

Speaker:

So credit to app states DC for forcing us into that.

Speaker:

Um, not sure if anyone else noticed that, but they definitely took away

Speaker:

the middle of the field early and committed to that all game long.

Speaker:

I also noticed in the second, they brought their corners up on the guys

Speaker:

in the perimeter and then cheated their safeties towards the middle to almost.

Speaker:

Pinch down the timing on the outside and take away the middle at the same time.

Speaker:

So they, they made some, some quality halftime adjustments on

Speaker:

defense that caused us some fits.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, sorry, Jonathan, go ahead.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I was going to, you know, one of the things this year, especially,

Speaker:

uh, you know, credit to the coaching staff, you know, the fact app

Speaker:

state through that wrinkle in that we exploited on Georgia Southern.

Speaker:

Um, You know, the first half specially, uh, you know, the coaching

Speaker:

staff saw that obviously we started running all those outside passes.

Speaker:

Uh, you know, there's those off tackle runs to really take advantage.

Speaker:

We saw that we made the adjustment.

Speaker:

Uh, obviously app state made some solid adjustments in the second

Speaker:

half, which slowed us down.

Speaker:

But I feel like the coaching staff this year has been much more reactive and

Speaker:

making those adjustments, whether it Coming out of a game heading into based

Speaker:

on prior game film or in game adjustments.

Speaker:

Uh, obviously it didn't give us the win this year, but I feel like we're

Speaker:

much more, uh, reactive in the coaching staff, a little more servant assertive

Speaker:

as far as, uh, seeing what's happening and making those adjustments and putting

Speaker:

our guys in the best place to execute.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

To back up that point, we've had fans criticize Ricky throughout his

Speaker:

tenure as being too conservative.

Speaker:

Yesterday, he goes forward on fourth down.

Speaker:

It didn't work out, but if if Colton hands that ball off, that might be a touchdown.

Speaker:

If Colton takes the other gap, that's a first down.

Speaker:

He gets six to 10 yards easily.

Speaker:

You just picked the wrong gap.

Speaker:

Um, which is such a bang, bang play as well.

Speaker:

He's got what less than a second to pick.

Speaker:

So he picks a gap and he goes and gets stopped and, and he almost got it anyways.

Speaker:

I mean, I thought at first they were gonna maybe, maybe take a look at it

Speaker:

and measure it, but then like, okay, you see the replays, he didn't get it.

Speaker:

But it was close.

Speaker:

There were some questionable spots yesterday.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Apart from that, that play.

Speaker:

Honestly, I think they should have went back to that third down play and looked

Speaker:

at where that spot should have been.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Cause I feel like we had the first down before we even, the announcer said

Speaker:

it, the announcer said, Oh, it looks like to be enough for the first down.

Speaker:

And then he says, Oh, Oh, they're about a yard short.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They walked it back like three yards.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's how you got to.

Speaker:

The refs got to do better.

Speaker:

If everyone sees it, refs got to do better, especially on a job.

Speaker:

That is so like the spot of the ball.

Speaker:

It's just,

Speaker:

it seems so arbitrary, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You also have the ability to just go review it.

Speaker:

Like, Oh crap.

Speaker:

I may have put that on the wrong side of the foot or something.

Speaker:

Just go take a look.

Speaker:

We have a replay for that reason.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, if it's like first down, no one cares, but a third down setting up a

Speaker:

fourth and short and a territory where, you know, you're going to go for it.

Speaker:

Yeah, I just think they w it'll be fine.

Speaker:

And then i of turn things quite a bi was not too long after we to start

Speaker:

the third quarte get too deep in this, I n shout out Aaron Young for weeks.

Speaker:

Yesterday again, p on 14 carries.

Speaker:

He's just playing so damn hard.

Speaker:

Out of the backfield.

Speaker:

He was running yesterday.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, he does it every week, but yesterday he was running.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I was hoping to see him with five, six, seven more carries considering

Speaker:

he was, he was going off at what, like seven, almost eight yards of

Speaker:

pop, almost eight yards of carry.

Speaker:

I think I, I w I wouldn't say I know the number, but the number of design

Speaker:

runs we have for Colton, do you guys know what that number was yesterday?

Speaker:

I don't think I know the number, but I think it had to be at least.

Speaker:

Other than the, the one, you know, where he, it's like a, you know, option and he

Speaker:

dives and he doesn't get the first down.

Speaker:

I mean, there's, there's 16 other runs there that he had on his 17 carries or

Speaker:

16 other runs, I think at least what five to six of them have to be designed runs.

Speaker:

So he's got.

Speaker:

Two and a half yards per carry.

Speaker:

And he's probably gotten out a couple of times.

Speaker:

He had a 14 yard carry.

Speaker:

So he's got probably one time where he rolls out and he goes 14 yards

Speaker:

and whatever, and Aaron is hopping off every single time he runs.

Speaker:

I get it that you got to mix it up.

Speaker:

I get it that we do that with Colton for a reason.

Speaker:

Cause he's super quick, but.

Speaker:

In this situation, until they stop him, I'm not sure why we didn't

Speaker:

just keep running with Aaron.

Speaker:

He was torturing.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So five of those are sacks, right?

Speaker:

So you got to take those out of it.

Speaker:

So they count those.

Speaker:

They count a sack as a run.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That loss is 23 yards.

Speaker:

That's why I didn't think they counted the sacks as a run.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's why the net yardage is 42.

Speaker:

Oh, I actually ran for 63 yards.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

But he had five sacks.

Speaker:

Uh, mounting the 23 loss yards and losses.

Speaker:

I didn't realize they counted a sack as a run.

Speaker:

It's . It's, yeah, it's not a run, it's a sack.

Speaker:

It's, yeah.

Speaker:

And then the NFL, they take it out of what?

Speaker:

Team?

Speaker:

Pa team passing yards, but not, yeah, team passing, quarterback passing yards.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

That's kind of what I was thinking it was at.

Speaker:

I didn't realize.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So he's at like 3.8 yards per carry if you count out the five, seven yards.

Speaker:

So a little better, but still, still.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Aaron's getting eight . I think it, man, you gotta feed the beast.

Speaker:

Support your, your point that 14 carries.

Speaker:

It's kind of like when you have a guy that goes seven of eight from

Speaker:

three, you should never see that.

Speaker:

'cause if he's hitting seven of eight from three, he should have stopped 15 threes.

Speaker:

Yeah, a hundred percent.

Speaker:

Shoot until, doesn't work anymore.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I, I, I think you gotta feed the beast in this situation.

Speaker:

I mean, it's a, especially at the end of the game here when we, you know.

Speaker:

We're trying to in the second half, keep the lead and you know, just,

Speaker:

I'm not saying run out the clock, but we're trying to keep the lead.

Speaker:

We need to score, we need to do the right things, but also running

Speaker:

the clock is not a bad deal.

Speaker:

Just feed the beast.

Speaker:

If they stop them, okay, we'll, we'll go to the throw in the wall.

Speaker:

I mean, come on, we got to run on his, his shoulders were.

Speaker:

They were asking for to carry all the weight and we didn't give it to him.

Speaker:

And I'm not really sure why.

Speaker:

So I watched the game at, at afterglow for our watch party.

Speaker:

So audio wasn't great for me because I have bar noises all around me

Speaker:

and I, my hearing sucks anyways.

Speaker:

Did they say anything about Daevon Roche and why he wasn't playing?

Speaker:

They said at the beginning of the game, That he was out, but

Speaker:

they didn't, I, I don't remember.

Speaker:

It was such a quick thing and I heard it and I kind of turned

Speaker:

my head like, Oh, wait, okay.

Speaker:

So Devin's out, but I didn't know why.

Speaker:

So I didn't hear what they said specifically, but they did it.

Speaker:

They did say it's, they said he was out.

Speaker:

So they said he was out with injury injury.

Speaker:

That's what I'm really elaborate.

Speaker:

Yeah, he, he did get another injury in the Georgia Southern game.

Speaker:

And I don't think we saw much late in that one.

Speaker:

So I'm hoping that that's not continuing to linger.

Speaker:

And maybe it's something they just said, all right, take this week and the bi week

Speaker:

and come back healthy for the last three.

Speaker:

So, I mean, I think Bryce Duke did a good job.

Speaker:

He just didn't get on the field very much.

Speaker:

He had two pretty good catches, one for a big first down,

Speaker:

had a couple of decent runs.

Speaker:

But I think I was just looking through the last drive of the game,

Speaker:

which we had plenty of time on that drive to go down the field.

Speaker:

I want to say it was like, I can't remember exactly how much.

Speaker:

I think it was like five minutes.

Speaker:

But the only touch Aaron Young got was on a pass.

Speaker:

So, yeah, it was.

Speaker:

But, you know, to kind of come back to that, the first point five minutes.

Speaker:

Five minutes, OK.

Speaker:

We have a lot of playmakers, which, you know, we have a, a, a tough

Speaker:

run here in the next three games to, to finish out the season.

Speaker:

But, uh, you know, whether it's Aaron Young, uh, Colton on the ground or

Speaker:

through the air, uh, you mentioned like Bryce, I mean, Isiah Paige,

Speaker:

obviously without, without saying, um, you know, finding that right mix,

Speaker:

you know, whatever the D throws at us.

Speaker:

Uh, I think, you know, that'll really be key in the next three games is

Speaker:

finding that optimal mix to get the ball out with the playmakers.

Speaker:

And, uh, we know what they can do.

Speaker:

Um, but yeah, it's, uh, still a tough result the way it played out, but, uh,

Speaker:

with the guys we have on the team, we have, uh, again, with the start to the

Speaker:

season, uh, coming out of the gates as we did with the, the tough schedule,

Speaker:

uh, really excited to see what we've been able to do, continue to fight.

Speaker:

Uh, but yeah, it's, it's going to be fun.

Speaker:

Three games to finish out with two of those at home.

Speaker:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

Be nice to just win those two.

Speaker:

And then it's a little bit less of a sweat at Arkansas state for a number

Speaker:

of reasons, but I don't know if I feel like if we beat JMU and Marshall

Speaker:

at home, we're not going to lose to anybody on the road the following week.

Speaker:

But Hey, it's the fun belt, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

College football is a shit show this year anyway.

Speaker:

It doesn't matter.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But we do have a bi week this week and we know what happens after bi weeks.

Speaker:

Ricky Ronnie does not lose after bi weeks.

Speaker:

I really hope not this time.

Speaker:

Oh man.

Speaker:

Yeah, we'll never hear the end of that if they do.

Speaker:

So please, please don't.

Speaker:

But I'm, I'm glad for the bye week mainly just to get some guys healthy.

Speaker:

Like, you know, we said Devin Roche missed because of injury, but Santana Saunders

Speaker:

wasn't there on the offensive line.

Speaker:

Uh, so we were kind of really down to the, down a couple of guys on that offensive

Speaker:

line from the start of the season.

Speaker:

So hopefully getting them back and then we'll see maybe Jason

Speaker:

Henderson, maybe a Jalen Butler.

Speaker:

Like my, my dream now is to get Jalen Butler and Pat Conroy on the field

Speaker:

at the same time and just see what defense has tried to do to stop it.

Speaker:

So since Jason's taking his red shirt, Speaking of like, like injuries,

Speaker:

yeah, you can play the rest of the season now.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Cause there's only three games left.

Speaker:

He only played South Carolina, so he can play three.

Speaker:

That's still crazy to me.

Speaker:

It still blows my mind that that's a real thing.

Speaker:

Cause when we played obviously one snap and you were done.

Speaker:

So, yeah.

Speaker:

And you guys got mistreated.

Speaker:

You guys, you guys got mistreated.

Speaker:

Yeah, we know.

Speaker:

No cream cheese for your bagels.

Speaker:

Oh, that's right.

Speaker:

Because a bagel is a snack, but if you put cream cheese

Speaker:

on it, it's considered a meal.

Speaker:

Meal.

Speaker:

Can't have it.

Speaker:

Nothing like a cold bagel at 5.

Speaker:

30 in the morning.

Speaker:

It was really like 4.

Speaker:

30 as well, because it was like, you better show up an hour before the

Speaker:

meeting times, like it's craziness.

Speaker:

So because of injuries and depth and all that, Um, one of the plays I want

Speaker:

to shout out from yesterday was a pass at state head to the end zone where

Speaker:

the ball is knocked out by Deavon Iles.

Speaker:

Daevon is a true freshman safety playing in that position,

Speaker:

punches it out perfectly.

Speaker:

We all thought at first that was a drop, but that was just

Speaker:

a perfectly defended pass.

Speaker:

I'll hold my hand up on that one.

Speaker:

I texted you guys and said, Oh, well, I don't know why he's doing the.

Speaker:

If he didn't do anything, I guess.

Speaker:

And right away they showed the replay and said, Oh, nevermind.

Speaker:

I'm sorry.

Speaker:

Um, that was an incredible play.

Speaker:

Like what a, what a defensive play.

Speaker:

Incredible.

Speaker:

And that's his first kind of introduction to ODU fans is him shutting

Speaker:

down on an amazing pass that was perfectly thrown right in the basket.

Speaker:

Like that was the only play he could make and he made it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

If he doesn't touch the ball, it's a catch, it's a touchdown.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Yeah, so shout out to Daevon on that play.

Speaker:

That was awesome.

Speaker:

Incredible.

Speaker:

Um, Jaron Manning, second straight game with more than 10 tackles

Speaker:

continues to be a light on our defense.

Speaker:

Just phenomenal.

Speaker:

This season, EJ green.

Speaker:

Great to see him back playing a lot of snaps.

Speaker:

Uh, he was second in tackles yesterday with eight.

Speaker:

Um, no sex for the boys yesterday, but.

Speaker:

We did have three tackles for loss between Jaron, Angelo Rankin, who has

Speaker:

become a phenomenal defender, uh, in the tackle, like in other areas of just

Speaker:

other than being a corner, like he's coming up in the run game and making

Speaker:

plays for multiple games in a row now.

Speaker:

Um, been really impressed by him this season.

Speaker:

And then Chris Trinidad has, uh, the other tackle for loss.

Speaker:

Chris has had a phenomenal season as well.

Speaker:

Yeah, no sacks yesterday, but it was not for a lack of trying.

Speaker:

I mean, we were sending the house on a bunch of blitzes and you can see

Speaker:

it show up in the quarterback hits.

Speaker:

Like Seth Noatala had two QB hits.

Speaker:

Mario Thompson had two and Koa had another one.

Speaker:

Probably a few more QB hits that they could have included in there,

Speaker:

but they were just able to get the ball out quickly or pick up the

Speaker:

blitz just enough to avoid the sack.

Speaker:

And then Aguilar just was.

Speaker:

Dotting those deep balls and credit to his receivers to think that second touchdown

Speaker:

pass, he actually under threw it, but the receiver just kind of shook the defender

Speaker:

and took a step back and caught it.

Speaker:

Um, but man, you can't give app state any time back there, like, unless you're a,

Speaker:

like an unblocked rusher coming in, which we didn't have any of those, like you were

Speaker:

just not going to hit them quick enough.

Speaker:

It was just pretty wild, frustrating for that defense.

Speaker:

I will say, uh, the other thing I noticed with app that I hadn't seen in the last

Speaker:

few weeks is they had a real team speed.

Speaker:

Uh, we hadn't seen that in the last few games against our opponents, but, um,

Speaker:

there was one play where Joey Aguilar and the running back, uh, Mario, or

Speaker:

I think it was Mario that had a good angle on the play, just got smoked.

Speaker:

Like just, they just burned him around the edge and it didn't matter how good of an

Speaker:

angle he had, the speed was just too much.

Speaker:

And there's plays like that where you're like, all right, this team

Speaker:

has some real talent and there was no business for them starting the season 0

Speaker:

Marshall's really good.

Speaker:

And that's another really good running back.

Speaker:

We've gone up against in the last couple of weeks, but 23

Speaker:

carries for 123 yards, uh, 5.

Speaker:

2 yards per carry had a long 29 didn't get in the end zone, but man,

Speaker:

he was a workhorse, especially on those drives later in the game when

Speaker:

they needed to get in like third and three, third and four, third and five.

Speaker:

They were able to set that up a lot, which is why their third down

Speaker:

conversion rate was a little bit higher.

Speaker:

Cause we weren't really defending a lot of those third and 10

Speaker:

pluses like we've been used to.

Speaker:

It was.

Speaker:

Third and five, you can run, you can pass, there's a lot of options, and they were

Speaker:

killing us with outs and corners, um, in those, those third and short situations.

Speaker:

Yeah, um, just got to tip your hat to App State.

Speaker:

That's all we can really do at this point, because

Speaker:

it feels like that scene in, uh, Fast and Furious, where they have

Speaker:

that race with Toretta and the, the cop at the beginning of the movie,

Speaker:

he goes, I almost had you, bro.

Speaker:

Doesn't, it doesn't matter.

Speaker:

No, it doesn't matter how close you are.

Speaker:

Yeah, I mean, I don't think there's any sense in overreacting either.

Speaker:

Some people are overreacting.

Speaker:

Oh, well, we did this wrong.

Speaker:

We did that wrong.

Speaker:

And like, I don't want to be too, I think we talked about this a little bit ago.

Speaker:

I don't want to be too.

Speaker:

It's totally fine.

Speaker:

It's totally great.

Speaker:

We're a great football team and we're going to win all these last three games.

Speaker:

Like, we don't want to be that way, but we also don't want to overreact and say,

Speaker:

Oh my God, we, we just screwed that game.

Speaker:

We, we should have won.

Speaker:

We just made way too many mistakes.

Speaker:

No, we didn't.

Speaker:

We didn't make too many mistakes yesterday, but they were mistakes.

Speaker:

A lot of times that were forced by app state, just playing really well.

Speaker:

So, you know, it's tough and that's how it goes.

Speaker:

We don't want to overreact and, you know, freak everyone out.

Speaker:

It's, it's all right.

Speaker:

It's football.

Speaker:

This is what happens.

Speaker:

I had a lot of similar feelings after the South Carolina game, right?

Speaker:

Like we outplayed a good football team.

Speaker:

Obviously App State's not the same caliber as South Carolina

Speaker:

from a talent perspective, but, uh, ODU is a good football team.

Speaker:

We competed.

Speaker:

They just made more plays

Speaker:

that South Carolina law still burns me, man.

Speaker:

Like that loss.

Speaker:

I feel like it's worse every week after they just dump truck Texas A& M at home.

Speaker:

But I was like, you know what?

Speaker:

We played a lot better down there than A& M did.

Speaker:

And I can promise you their NIL budgets a lot bigger than ours.

Speaker:

We played, we played them better than a lot of teams did this year.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I saw a run from Lenore sellers yesterday where he only gained like 12 yards,

Speaker:

but it's maybe the most impressive 12 yards I've ever seen in my life.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They, they just, they just have crazy athletes at every position.

Speaker:

I get like defense everywhere.

Speaker:

I mean, they, they blew the doors off a and M late in that game.

Speaker:

It was actually, yeah, they really should be better than they are considering

Speaker:

where they are at geography wise.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And they're so close to Atlanta.

Speaker:

They got all the South Carolina athletes.

Speaker:

They're not far from Charlotte.

Speaker:

I mean, they should just be eating up teams with where they're located.

Speaker:

Mhm.

Speaker:

A lot of competition in that space to Clemson, Georgia, Florida.

Speaker:

I mean, true.

Speaker:

Yeah, tough eating, tough eating out there.

Speaker:

They scored more points against Kentucky, L.

Speaker:

S.

Speaker:

U.

Speaker:

Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas A and M.

Speaker:

Then they scored on us.

Speaker:

So we gave him two touchdowns.

Speaker:

Yeah, we gave him two touchdowns.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

It was week one.

Speaker:

I know it's week one.

Speaker:

I know, but I don't care.

Speaker:

That is, I mean, they, they scored two touchdowns.

Speaker:

Like you're saying Gary, that they started inside our 10 yard line like that.

Speaker:

And they only scored 23 points on us.

Speaker:

We played our defense is something.

Speaker:

I know we didn't get off on third down enough.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Last year, yesterday.

Speaker:

And I feel bad that we've gone this far into the show, and we have not shared

Speaker:

Aaron's little tidbit on the game.

Speaker:

So, I'm gonna share that right now, and then after that we'll go to fan calls.

Speaker:

We got a hurt for the Duke of this what's up, Mike?

Speaker:

What's up, Gary?

Speaker:

Sorry.

Speaker:

I can't be on there with you I'm on this wonderful trip down to Atlanta

Speaker:

to see Billie Eilish with the family I can't say that I'm a big fan.

Speaker:

But anyway, it should be a great time Atlanta Falcons are in town and

Speaker:

right now the Cowboys are losing.

Speaker:

So that's awesome Anyways, really good game yesterday.

Speaker:

Unfortunately, we did not come away with the victory.

Speaker:

I think the key number was five, five turnovers for the traditional sense.

Speaker:

One that was on down, because I know Ricky said that he kind of regretted

Speaker:

doing, uh, and then five sacks.

Speaker:

So we gave up five sacks.

Speaker:

We didn't get any sacks, but to have five turnovers to one and only be

Speaker:

one score away, uh, there's lots of great upside for this team.

Speaker:

So I'm excited about two weeks from now.

Speaker:

That's the big game.

Speaker:

That's the next game.

Speaker:

We got to beat JMU and that spring poison store and other thing.

Speaker:

I'll see you guys tomorrow at the basketball game.

Speaker:

Go Monarchs.

Speaker:

All right, thanks Aaron.

Speaker:

Um, Cowboys did lose that game, so we need to give that a final recap.

Speaker:

I believe they lost 27 21 to the falcons.

Speaker:

is injured.

Speaker:

He's out.

Speaker:

Um, this, this, this call is it's always, I'm not sure injured by the way.

Speaker:

I don just not great.

Speaker:

Just a dra say it is the Yankee fans week.

Speaker:

Oh, that's a good o

Speaker:

All right, and then, uh, obviously the Duke of Discipline gave us a

Speaker:

call, so I'm gonna throw his logo up on here on Jonathan's face

Speaker:

before we play his video, his audio.

Speaker:

Sorry, Jonathan.

Speaker:

Interesting game, fellas.

Speaker:

I do want to start off, Van Isiah Paige absolutely cooked yesterday.

Speaker:

Uh, I wanted to highlight that first because the guy has given

Speaker:

everything to this program since coming here, and I hate it when we

Speaker:

Squatter huge performances like that.

Speaker:

Uh, don't want to be too negative, but do you want to point out some things?

Speaker:

Uh, I don't think our defense game plan enough on our UR's ability to run.

Speaker:

Contain was broken too many times and he ran for his most yards yet on the season.

Speaker:

We did go away from the run.

Speaker:

Probably in, in just such weird situations, uh, after talking about

Speaker:

that we could just run the ball down their throats and we did.

Speaker:

AY had a lot of great runs, uh, Duke had some great runs.

Speaker:

Uh, Colton had still a lot of growing to do.

Speaker:

Uh, the pocket awareness was really iffy yesterday.

Speaker:

One of those sacks, the, the pocket looked perfectly fine and he ended up

Speaker:

twisting or spinning to try and scramble, uh, when the pocket was perfectly fine.

Speaker:

Uh, that's where knowing you can run can hurt you.

Speaker:

Uh, just having more patience in the pocket and hopefully he grows in that.

Speaker:

Not saying not to run, but, uh, he's got a good arm.

Speaker:

And when there's a good pocket, let's try and use it.

Speaker:

Fumbles when our QB fumble the ball, uh, from what I looked at when

Speaker:

Grant was going through this for sub 500 and when they fumbled the ball

Speaker:

twice, it's almost a guaranteed loss.

Speaker:

So, uh, he fumbled in the five games he's played in this year.

Speaker:

So need to fix that, especially when you're going out against a

Speaker:

team that, uh, had a double digit.

Speaker:

Negative turnover margin.

Speaker:

So gotta clean that up Uh, but that's that now on the jmu these guys are still in

Speaker:

this even though it's a bit messy So let's pass pack the castle and get loud ran on.

Speaker:

All right It brings up a good point with uh aguilar's feet.

Speaker:

We didn't even talk about that.

Speaker:

He had a third Seven carries for 61 yards.

Speaker:

So yeah Every time he ran off took take off.

Speaker:

It was just like perfectly timed but um I was really impressed by Aguilar yesterday.

Speaker:

Sorry to cut you off there, Gary.

Speaker:

Oh, you're good.

Speaker:

But Garrick, thank you for the call.

Speaker:

We'll, uh, get the week to rest back up and then hopefully

Speaker:

pack the castle for JMU.

Speaker:

Like if you're not going to show up to the JMU game, why, why do you have tickets?

Speaker:

What's the point?

Speaker:

So it was announced that students tickets for JMU sold out.

Speaker:

So yeah, it's been great this year.

Speaker:

Phenomenal.

Speaker:

And I will say this, the progress for the student section started last season

Speaker:

because we had these same issues last year where these season tickets were sold

Speaker:

for whatever and they were empty while we were doing that bowl run last year.

Speaker:

But the student section continued to be popping.

Speaker:

And it's happening this year again.

Speaker:

We have to get away from all these corporate tickets that we're giving out.

Speaker:

And we have to, I feel like we need to just sell single game tickets to Virginia

Speaker:

tech so we can avoid how many empty seats we have the rest of the season.

Speaker:

Just amp up the price for Virginia tech as a single game ticket,

Speaker:

charge 200 bucks if you want to.

Speaker:

Oh, they'll sell.

Speaker:

They'll sell.

Speaker:

They'll make more money and we'll still be able to sell those

Speaker:

tickets for the other games,

Speaker:

especially in the years when you get.

Speaker:

Tech, East Carolina, JMU, and Marshall.

Speaker:

Those are fan bases that are going to travel for them too, but also games

Speaker:

that people here surely care about.

Speaker:

Yeah, because I mean, whatever the price of a season ticket is, that's what Tech

Speaker:

fans are willing to pay for the one.

Speaker:

And that's pretty consistent all three years that we've had them in Norfolk.

Speaker:

We've run into this problem.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's why, if you go on SeatGeek right now, you can get like

Speaker:

5 tickets to every ODU game.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I know people are trying to sell them for 60, 70 bucks a pop.

Speaker:

Like it's not going to happen with the way that the, uh, with the way it's happening

Speaker:

this year with the tech games is you're not going to sell them for 70 bucks.

Speaker:

Like it's just not going to happen.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, but we do have a sellout officially.

Speaker:

So soon section sold out all the rest of tickets sold out for GMU.

Speaker:

Uh, hopefully that means we're going to have an awesome crowd.

Speaker:

I hope we do not see many streamers in this game.

Speaker:

I hate it so much.

Speaker:

Nothing would make me happier than a shutout for that game, just because

Speaker:

I wanna see everyone have to carry the big dumb bags of streamers

Speaker:

back to their car afterwards.

Speaker:

that'd be great.

Speaker:

Some party supply stores, like why are they refunding and, and

Speaker:

bring back so many streamers.

Speaker:

What happened?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Was it coastal that didn't let them bring him in?

Speaker:

It might have been.

Speaker:

God, I wish we would do that too.

Speaker:

No, I think it's better to let them bring them in and have

Speaker:

to take them back with them.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's also a battle you will not win with the, uh, the

Speaker:

walkthrough gates that they have now.

Speaker:

You'll never find them.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, It's Trish's and I'm glad we don't do it because it's just trashy.

Speaker:

I mean, you were literally trashing the stadium.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I think last year it rained after the game, or the last time they came here,

Speaker:

it rained after, so it was just a mess.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I've always said, if we lost every game of the year but beat

Speaker:

JMU, I would still be happy.

Speaker:

I can't stand them.

Speaker:

I said that the year we beat Tech in 2018, I said, I don't care if we

Speaker:

go 1 11, as long as that one win is against Virginia Tech, I'm happy.

Speaker:

I'm happy.

Speaker:

That basically happened.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You went a lot that year.

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

all right.

Speaker:

I'm excited about what we could still, what we can still do here.

Speaker:

Like I'm going to watch the JMU game on Saturday, see how they look.

Speaker:

Cause they've been kind of what scored 70 against UNC and then their offense

Speaker:

hasn't really looked right since then.

Speaker:

So I don't know.

Speaker:

Like it's, it's, it's like a crap shoot every week trying to figure these

Speaker:

teams out, but it's so different now.

Speaker:

Alright, so before we get to next week and get too far down the road, we need

Speaker:

to take a moment to shout out the pride.

Speaker:

So let's do that right now.

Speaker:

Um, if you guys want to grab a beer or something, this is

Speaker:

the perfect time to do it.

Speaker:

I'm going to do that.

Speaker:

This episode of the Monarchist Podcast is brought to you by

Speaker:

the Pride of ODU Collective.

Speaker:

Their mission is to elevate the experience of student athletes through

Speaker:

name, image, and likeness, while also elevating the fan experience.

Speaker:

If you or your business are interested in getting involved,

Speaker:

you can reach out to us directly or go over to the pride of odu.com.

Speaker:

That is the pride of odu.com.

Speaker:

Thank you for listening.

Speaker:

And go Monarchs.

Speaker:

So, as promised, I grabbed my beer.

Speaker:

I was quick.

Speaker:

Yeah, I couldn't run down the stairs that fast.

Speaker:

Might break an ankle or pull a hammy.

Speaker:

So my, my monarch beers are in my garage fridge, so I had to just

Speaker:

settle for tapping the Rockies here.

Speaker:

I am out.

Speaker:

I'm, I'm distraught to hear the, uh, I mean, you know, monarchist

Speaker:

beers, uh, all sold out.

Speaker:

I was hoping to get another, uh, a couple four packs, uh, anxiously

Speaker:

awaiting the, uh, the new batch.

Speaker:

That's all.

Speaker:

I know a guy that bought two cases and has some in his bar.

Speaker:

So we can make a trade or something.

Speaker:

Hey, we can work something out.

Speaker:

It's well worth it.

Speaker:

It's a good beer.

Speaker:

I, I, I don't think we've actually talked that much about the

Speaker:

beer on here other than telling people to go buy it, support it.

Speaker:

Money goes back to the collective, goes back to our players.

Speaker:

Um, but it's a good beer.

Speaker:

Yeah, I enjoyed it for sure.

Speaker:

It's a good beer.

Speaker:

And, uh, uh, afterglow, I mean, what a spot, man, like the, uh, the support,

Speaker:

the things they do, uh, support, you know, the collective, uh, ODU in general.

Speaker:

Uh, I mean, it's definitely been, you know, whether it's the, the coaches,

Speaker:

uh, forget the official name of the coaches caravan or the events that

Speaker:

have been going on there, but, uh, you know, really impressed to see not only

Speaker:

a Monarch nation show up, uh, but after glow do what they do, uh, both brewing

Speaker:

and, uh, supporting ODU athletics.

Speaker:

So we probably had 30 to 40 fans show up yesterday for the watch party.

Speaker:

I like it, Gary service table service here is pretty good.

Speaker:

So Brittany, I said, hi, uh, all right.

Speaker:

One of the coolest things I did was this for this game, they added a new

Speaker:

projector, um, and before the game, Josh, who's the owner of after glow and

Speaker:

a great guy, he asked me every game, how many TVs do you want the game on?

Speaker:

I always say every TV, all of them.

Speaker:

So, I mean, we had in our area, we were in the front area.

Speaker:

We had the projector and then five TVs all with the ODU game on it.

Speaker:

It was fantastic.

Speaker:

Like you couldn't have found a better atmosphere to watch the game.

Speaker:

Everyone there is into it.

Speaker:

We had ODU chants going.

Speaker:

We had everyone getting loud.

Speaker:

I didn't get called out.

Speaker:

I asked for an ODU chant in the third quarter and like the next drive we've

Speaker:

got a strip fumble, strip sack fumble.

Speaker:

So I tried to get one going between the third and fourth quarter.

Speaker:

And this lady just said, last time you asked us to do that, we fumbled the ball.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

So shout out to her for picking up on the connection there.

Speaker:

I really appreciate that type of attention to detail.

Speaker:

So note to self, Mike, Mike can't lead any more chance going forward.

Speaker:

Got it.

Speaker:

Hey, I'm just trying to get people hyped.

Speaker:

That's all.

Speaker:

We just got to get a recording of it so you can just play

Speaker:

it in afterglow occasionally.

Speaker:

You'd be like, Hey, not me.

Speaker:

I'll make you a deal.

Speaker:

Mike, we win the next two games.

Speaker:

I'll be there for afterglow.

Speaker:

I know it's like an hour from me.

Speaker:

I mean, ODU is an hour from me, but I come to every home game.

Speaker:

But when it's an away game, it's easier to just stay home, watch

Speaker:

the game from home with the family.

Speaker:

But we win the next two games.

Speaker:

I'll be there for the watch party for the Arkansas State game.

Speaker:

Beer on me, that's what I heard.

Speaker:

Yeah, at least one beer on me, I don't know, we'll see.

Speaker:

If we win the next two games, I will pay for your golf that

Speaker:

day before we go to Afterglow.

Speaker:

That's what I'm talking about.

Speaker:

There's my guy.

Speaker:

We're doing that.

Speaker:

I might get in trouble, to be fair, but We'll see.

Speaker:

Yeah, honey, I'm going to be gone for eight hours.

Speaker:

All day.

Speaker:

Just like when we tailgate,

Speaker:

but it's important.

Speaker:

We might win seven games.

Speaker:

Be pretty cool.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's, uh, I wouldn't say quite the turnaround, uh, considering the, the, the

Speaker:

teams we played to start the year, but, uh, be able to have seven wins, uh, with

Speaker:

the strength of schedule we have again, like we've got a football team boys.

Speaker:

So, uh, definitely excited, uh, looking forward, uh, hopefully that golf, uh,

Speaker:

before after glow against Arkansas state, but yeah, have a tough game next week

Speaker:

against JMU to, uh, two weeks away.

Speaker:

Sorry.

Speaker:

Next schedule week.

Speaker:

I should say.

Speaker:

Uh, yeah, but I know the boys are going to be up for it.

Speaker:

And I think Marshall's even tougher this season than JMU right now, and they're

Speaker:

playing really good ball right now.

Speaker:

They are, but it's JVU, and you know how that's going to go.

Speaker:

That game is going to be a fight, and it's going to be a tough one.

Speaker:

No matter what, no matter how good or bad they are, every year,

Speaker:

that game is going to be tough.

Speaker:

All right, so, Gary, what were you about to add there?

Speaker:

I was just thinking, like, last year, it was, what's, what a lot of JMU fans would

Speaker:

say, the best team that they've ever had.

Speaker:

And we went up there, and we're one play away from beating them

Speaker:

at their place on Halloween night.

Speaker:

So, yeah, I mean, it's, yeah, I think that the blowout on the first one was kind of,

Speaker:

you know, whatever, bad, bad year for us, but when we're on even footing, man, that

Speaker:

game could, could become a lot more fun.

Speaker:

And I will say this,

Speaker:

they've gotten so used to winning their fans, their students all left at halftime

Speaker:

to go party in a one position game.

Speaker:

I can guarantee our students will not leave at halftime if it's a one game.

Speaker:

I don't think our students will leave if we're beating them by 30.

Speaker:

I really don't.

Speaker:

Those guys have been awesome this year.

Speaker:

Yeah, they have.

Speaker:

And I think whoever has reached out to these students to get them hyped

Speaker:

up for these games and get them to be involved needs some credit.

Speaker:

Um, I know student engagement services is involved there, but they've whatever

Speaker:

you've done to get these students excited about football again, Cause there was

Speaker:

a, a, a lull there where we weren't really bringing in the students anymore.

Speaker:

We got them re engaged and it's got me excited for if we can turn

Speaker:

this to like build on what we are right now and take that next step

Speaker:

up, how good our crowds could be.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Cause next year we won't have a Virginia Tech on the schedule to

Speaker:

be like, to hoard all the tickets.

Speaker:

I mean, next year bowl game this year with a freshman quarterback.

Speaker:

Upstate, I think.

Speaker:

Yeah, you're talking about a freshman quarterback coming back next year.

Speaker:

No, I'm saying like, if we, if we win a bowl game this year with a freshman

Speaker:

quarterback and then we come in the next year with that type of hype,

Speaker:

everybody's going to be, is going to want tickets, want to be here.

Speaker:

So, I mean, I, you know, it's an exciting time right now.

Speaker:

We do have a quarterback.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So, I mean, the last few years, we've been kind of a defensive team, right?

Speaker:

I think we can all say that.

Speaker:

Defense is awesome.

Speaker:

You need it to win games.

Speaker:

But offense sells tickets.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And Colton Joseph, if he continues to play like this, he's going

Speaker:

to sell a lot of tickets.

Speaker:

He's going to sell some tickets.

Speaker:

Go ahead, Gary.

Speaker:

He's also going to help quite a bit getting skill position players in

Speaker:

the portal in a couple of months.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

If you want to play with a guy, you know, you the ball.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

And the offense that we run, you know, coach Decker with, uh, what

Speaker:

is this year three, year two.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So year two, uh, I mean, I know we had a lot of turnover, but still, you know,

Speaker:

seeing what the offense is capable of, you know, now we have those guys, those.

Speaker:

Uh, the skill guys in there, uh, making plays again, uh, continue this momentum.

Speaker:

And, uh, you know, obviously with the quarterback play we have and,

Speaker:

you know, get some more weapons, you know, heading into the next season.

Speaker:

Again, it's, you know, I've probably said it 26 times today is, uh, it's exciting.

Speaker:

Obviously our record isn't as exciting as we all want it to be, but, uh, we

Speaker:

played some really good football teams.

Speaker:

Uh, but you know, the pieces are starting to click, uh, which

Speaker:

is, is damn exciting, I'd say.

Speaker:

I'll say it again.

Speaker:

Uh, to add on to that a little bit is, uh, the coaches got crushed for

Speaker:

the recruiting last couple of years.

Speaker:

We're finishing like the bottom four teams every year in recruiting.

Speaker:

And it shows you how bad those ratings are, because this is not

Speaker:

a bottom four team in the Sunbelt.

Speaker:

You can't do that without good recruiting.

Speaker:

And we're doing it in a period where we are seeing record turnover every season.

Speaker:

So these coaches have a pretty good eye for talent.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

247 and on three are missing because we're picking up guys that no one knows about

Speaker:

and they're having phenomenal years here.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's, uh, I've talked about this with a couple of people like

Speaker:

the NIL, the transfer portal, right?

Speaker:

Obviously, you have your core recruitment of high school guys, and then you're

Speaker:

recruiting in the transfer portal.

Speaker:

All the transfers.

Speaker:

Uh, you know, I wouldn't say it's a crapshoot, but there are a

Speaker:

lot more variables with the team turnover across college football.

Speaker:

I think that's why we have such a more competitive landscape is there is that

Speaker:

turnover, but, you know, to your point, Mike, our coaches have something figured

Speaker:

out because we had what 60 plus last year.

Speaker:

50 was a 57 this year.

Speaker:

New roster faces.

Speaker:

Uh, and okay, it took us a couple of weeks to put things

Speaker:

together to figure things out.

Speaker:

But we have a competitive football team and you look at some of the other

Speaker:

teams that go the other way, right?

Speaker:

Sure, they may have a highly touted class, but when they put all the pieces together,

Speaker:

they're not fielding a competitive or more competitive football team.

Speaker:

Uh, so it's definitely excited to see, you know, two out of

Speaker:

two with the high turnover.

Speaker:

We're still putting out, you know, highly competitive football team.

Speaker:

Uh, you know, I'd say a more competitive football team this year.

Speaker:

So, yeah, Uh, you know, the coaches hats off to them.

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

The, the press and all of that from a ratings perspective isn't as, uh, you

Speaker:

know, glowing, but they're, they're obviously doing something 22, one

Speaker:

score games in the last two seasons with one with the worst, one of the

Speaker:

worst recruiting classes year to year

Speaker:

that shows you not to really look at those ratings at all,

Speaker:

because we're proven them wrong.

Speaker:

And, you know, 22, one score games.

Speaker:

Uh, I think if we looked at.

Speaker:

You know, the prior seven years of, uh, ODU football, uh, you know, how

Speaker:

many one score games there were, uh, again, our, our, our sked or like the

Speaker:

results haven't been what we all hope for being, you know, ODU fans, but

Speaker:

like we're fighting, that's, you know, that's a step in the right direction.

Speaker:

Uh, and again, just putting all those pieces together,

Speaker:

making all those key plays.

Speaker:

Could have gone a lot of different ways with those 22.

Speaker:

I don't know what our record is.

Speaker:

I know it's not positive, but 10 and 12 and the ones we made some plays, but

Speaker:

like, I think we all know in some of those games, we've watched those plays

Speaker:

not be made or those mistakes be made.

Speaker:

That just swung it like, but we're right there, which, you know, I'd rather

Speaker:

us win, but like, we're right there.

Speaker:

And I'll say since 2017 to now, I can imagine we're probably

Speaker:

not over 30 one score games.

Speaker:

No, probably 22 of those are in the last two seasons.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Sounds like an excellent data point to dig up after the call.

Speaker:

Doesn't it?

Speaker:

Does, um,

Speaker:

but I think everyone needs to kind of take a step back and look at what

Speaker:

work he's turned this program into these last two seasons from where we

Speaker:

were from 2017 to when he was hired.

Speaker:

And even like those first two seasons with him, cause there was a lot of

Speaker:

games accounts, you'll say that.

Speaker:

We had no chance in and now we're in a better conference

Speaker:

and every game is a battle.

Speaker:

We're, we're, uh, quickly changing how people look at,

Speaker:

look at Old Dominion football.

Speaker:

We used to be like, uh, they're probably an easy win.

Speaker:

Now everyone's like, all right, we're gonna, they're gonna, they're

Speaker:

in for a battle when they know it.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Next step forward is going to be.

Speaker:

We can't, we can't play with it.

Speaker:

And I feel it coming every time I watch this team play now, because it's close.

Speaker:

We're so close to being that team.

Speaker:

But you've, you've seen now what it can be with that Thursday night

Speaker:

game against Georgia Southern.

Speaker:

Like when we are executing those little things, we can absolutely

Speaker:

blow out teams that are not bad.

Speaker:

Like Georgia Southern, it's still one loss in the Sunbelt.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And we just dismantled them on national TV.

Speaker:

So it's like it's there, but before we can ever get to that point, like with

Speaker:

what we did with Georgia Southern, it was like, all right, we get ahead.

Speaker:

We went by touchdown, but like six and six and then we lose the ball game.

Speaker:

Now it's like, okay, I feel, I would feel really good saying next year,

Speaker:

like six and six is going to be that checkbox for like the last three games

Speaker:

of the season or something like that.

Speaker:

But considering the difficulty of the schedule, the couple of games

Speaker:

we dropped, we, we shouldn't have.

Speaker:

We still have three games to go accomplish, like all

Speaker:

the realistic goals we had.

Speaker:

Win the East, play in the Sun Belt title game, go to a higher end bowl.

Speaker:

We can still do those things if we go three and up.

Speaker:

Like, we need a little help, but a small amount of help to get there.

Speaker:

So I'll take that where the last three games of the season mean something.

Speaker:

They're really, really important games.

Speaker:

When you look at a lot of other teams that are allegedly better than us,

Speaker:

either at the Group of Five or Power Four area, and They're like, all right,

Speaker:

who's going to burn their couple of red shirt games before we go get pounded

Speaker:

by 70, you know, to end our season?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Coles just changed everything.

Speaker:

I don't I got it.

Speaker:

I said earlier, but it changes the whole outlook of what this

Speaker:

program is moving forward.

Speaker:

I don't want to overstate it, but

Speaker:

it's nice having a quarterback you can rely on to make big place.

Speaker:

Yes, it is.

Speaker:

He can throw the ball.

Speaker:

He sure can throw the ball and his lack of hesitation on the short throws

Speaker:

changes our offense because we all complained about bubble screens for

Speaker:

the last few years and now the bubble screen is a useful weapon with cold.

Speaker:

Yeah, when you throw a dart, that's what happens.

Speaker:

It's a rocket coming out of there and you don't want someone's chest.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's now a play that I don't mind seeing.

Speaker:

Mm hmm.

Speaker:

Yeah, I mean, I think we've said it for a few years, but if you give Isaiah space,

Speaker:

he's going to make something happen.

Speaker:

And that's what Colton is able to do is to give him space because if the ball

Speaker:

takes a little bit longer to get there, then they can get to the they can get

Speaker:

in it close at least and make a tackle.

Speaker:

But he's got a little bit of space on him.

Speaker:

And man, you can fly and.

Speaker:

It takes a strong arm to do that on a bubble screen.

Speaker:

I know it's late in the show to say this, but on Tuesday, I will be talking

Speaker:

to Ricky and Colton about Colton.

Speaker:

So both interviews will be focused on Colton.

Speaker:

So if you have any questions that you want asked, send them in, uh,

Speaker:

send a DM, send an email, whatever.

Speaker:

If it's a good question, I'll include it.

Speaker:

If it's a bad question, I'll just act like I never got it.

Speaker:

Um, send it in.

Speaker:

I want to get answers to questions you guys have as fans.

Speaker:

Um, stuff that I care about might not be something you care about.

Speaker:

So send it in.

Speaker:

We'll make it work.

Speaker:

Um, yeah.

Speaker:

The other thing I'll shout out before we hop off of here.

Speaker:

The JMU game is also our annual Toys for Tots game.

Speaker:

Uh, so be paying attention to all of our social media channels.

Speaker:

We'll have a link where you can donate online.

Speaker:

You can bring a new unwrapped toy.

Speaker:

Uh, to the game against JMU, uh, we'll have the, uh, amphibious

Speaker:

vehicles on 49th street.

Speaker:

We'll have a few other pickup locations on Kaufman mall and in the blue lot.

Speaker:

Uh, we broke our record again last year.

Speaker:

We're just hoping to continue to do that again.

Speaker:

There'll be a lot of really cool things on display.

Speaker:

So pay attention to our social media, uh, odmonarchist.

Speaker:

com.

Speaker:

We'll have a lot of info there as we get closer to the game,

Speaker:

but start thinking Toys for Tots.

Speaker:

It'll be here in two weeks.

Speaker:

And before we go, thank you for adding that, Gary.

Speaker:

Um, If you don't want to bring a toy, cash or Venmo is accepted.

Speaker:

Um, so just pitch in any way you can, tell your JMU friends

Speaker:

that are coming, bring a toy.

Speaker:

It's all goes to the kids in the 757, which is the best part of it.

Speaker:

When you donate to Toys for Tots with the Monarchist, you know

Speaker:

those toys are staying in the 757.

Speaker:

So kids that could be ODU fans and students in the future, or even

Speaker:

athletes, Are getting those toys.

Speaker:

So, but before we go, I want to ask you guys one question.

Speaker:

So we have a bi week this week, which means you get free reign

Speaker:

on what games you want to watch.

Speaker:

We'll start with Gary because he is, uh, the biggest degenerate of all of us.

Speaker:

Uh, he's already got all of his games for Sunday or Saturday lined up.

Speaker:

What game are you most excited about on Saturday?

Speaker:

Well, I'm going to rule out the JMU Georgia state game.

Speaker:

Cause everyone for ODU you should watch that just to get a little

Speaker:

advanced scout scout on JMU.

Speaker:

I'm gonna go South Carolina at Vanderbilt.

Speaker:

I wanna see what Diego Pavia does against South Carolina.

Speaker:

Should be a really fun game and actually mean something in the SEC standing.

Speaker:

So, that'll be mine 4 15 on Saturday.

Speaker:

SC Vandy.

Speaker:

I'm gonna give Jonathan and Jarod another minute because I feel like

Speaker:

they're still looking at the schedule.

Speaker:

No, I already know who I'm going for.

Speaker:

I was looking to see if I had any extras.

Speaker:

My entire life have been an Indiana fan.

Speaker:

I'm a Colts fan, right?

Speaker:

I'm from Indiana.

Speaker:

I was born there.

Speaker:

I didn't live there long, but I got a lot of family, the family lived there.

Speaker:

We had a room in my house growing up that was painted cream and

Speaker:

crimson, and it had a light switch that said, Indiana turns me on.

Speaker:

Purdue turns me off.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So we're, my dad is a massive Indiana guy.

Speaker:

Uh, and Indiana is currently number eight play in Michigan.

Speaker:

That's a big one.

Speaker:

It's at Indiana.

Speaker:

I, I'm excited.

Speaker:

I'm probably going to go to my dad's house and watch it with them.

Speaker:

Um, it's going to be interesting next year when we play Indiana, because

Speaker:

good Lord, how can I root against them?

Speaker:

I've been on my team my whole life, but I'm going to root against them, obviously.

Speaker:

My dad, on the other hand, it's going to be a tough sell to get

Speaker:

him to root for ODU in that game.

Speaker:

So we'll see what happens.

Speaker:

But, uh, this weekend, Indiana, Michigan, I'm all in on Indiana right now.

Speaker:

Hopefully they can pull out the national championship.

Speaker:

That'd be incredible.

Speaker:

Even though their coach is an ex JMU coach.

Speaker:

That's a tough one, but it is still Indiana.

Speaker:

So for me, that's the one I'm watching.

Speaker:

Cignetti.

Speaker:

It's frustrating, but like, he's not JNU anymore, so I can live with it.

Speaker:

I mean, it's crazy.

Speaker:

The guy came in first press conference.

Speaker:

They're asking him like, how do you expect to

Speaker:

Google me?

Speaker:

All I do is win.

Speaker:

Like the cockiest response.

Speaker:

And he's followed it up with the catch it up, man.

Speaker:

They are dismantling teams And uh, I gotta use this moment to shut up sean

Speaker:

asbury's Former monarch is having a fantastic Yeah Terry jones jr.

Speaker:

Also out there on that roster as well in the secondary He's not getting

Speaker:

much playing time there No, he is not.

Speaker:

I think my favorite Cignetti quote so far, though, I think Kim Rivers two or

Speaker:

three weeks ago, they went out on the West Coast and played one of those.

Speaker:

I think teams is now in the ACC and they were asking about the travel schedule.

Speaker:

Like, does it mess you up going out there?

Speaker:

He goes, Oh, no, I try to leave as late as possible.

Speaker:

We do our walkthroughs, we fly out there, we get off, we eat dinner,

Speaker:

we go to sleep, we wake up in the morning, kick their ass, and come home.

Speaker:

Like he said that in a post game press conference, like right after the game.

Speaker:

He's like, all right.

Speaker:

I mean, as long as he's winning, he can say whatever he wants.

Speaker:

And he's a two touchdown favorite over Michigan on Saturday.

Speaker:

That's crazy.

Speaker:

My entire lifetime, Indiana is not a football school, but man.

Speaker:

A year after they won the national championship, by the way, or right?

Speaker:

Michigan, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

Not even a full year technically after, right?

Speaker:

There's the next season and that's, that's crazy.

Speaker:

And then they got Ohio state next week.

Speaker:

So are you ready?

Speaker:

Oh, I'm ready.

Speaker:

First, I will be watching the Indiana game just so I can, uh, you know, talk crap

Speaker:

to Jarod, uh, but it never, ever ends.

Speaker:

Uh, no, they're playing.

Speaker:

I mean, it's exciting to see what signet he's doing there.

Speaker:

Uh, I'll call them the underdog are coming out of left field, right?

Speaker:

The, the non football school competing.

Speaker:

Uh, but within the Sunbelt Marshall JMU, uh, you know, you could say Marshall has

Speaker:

a, uh, easier, uh, team ahead, but just to see how they perform, uh, knowing we

Speaker:

have them in the following weeks, but, uh, Ole Miss Georgia is going to be exciting.

Speaker:

I think, you know, Ole Miss lining up the scoreboard and Georgia, uh, still

Speaker:

winning, but Having to come on late there.

Speaker:

I think that's going to be an exciting game.

Speaker:

Uh, curious to see which old miss we get the, uh, in that game.

Speaker:

But, uh, man, college football, just pretty much every weekend

Speaker:

has just been full of good games, uh, good watching, whether you are

Speaker:

interested in the team or not, like, uh, it's just been a crazy year.

Speaker:

Uh, and as a fan, uh, it's been a really enjoyable one, I think.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Mike, you stole on a monitor there, John, that whole Miss

Speaker:

Georgia game is going to be sick.

Speaker:

Gary, what would you rather say?

Speaker:

Well, I was going to say, I left one bunny on the board.

Speaker:

So, Mike, if you don't get it, I'll clean it up after you.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So, my Sunbelt Game of the Week is going to be Louisiana at Arkansas State.

Speaker:

The winner of this game controls the West.

Speaker:

We obviously face Arkansas State.

Speaker:

So, it's going to be a good look into what we're facing in

Speaker:

our last week of the season.

Speaker:

But, it's just going to be a good game.

Speaker:

Because both teams are playing.

Speaker:

Very well.

Speaker:

Louisiana has been phenomenal considering what they've gone

Speaker:

through the last couple of seasons.

Speaker:

Um, so I'm just as excited to see that one, but my other game that wasn't

Speaker:

mentioned, it's another sec game.

Speaker:

This again, I am an SEC fan with my Tennessee connections,

Speaker:

Alabama, LSU in Baton Rouge, that game is going to be bonkers.

Speaker:

It's a night game in Baton Rouge, which are always awesome.

Speaker:

And, uh, both teams are.

Speaker:

Fighting to stay in that race in the sec.

Speaker:

Um, it's going to be a good one.

Speaker:

I think that's a playoff elimination game.

Speaker:

I think the losers out.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's fair.

Speaker:

Did I get your bunny?

Speaker:

That was the bunny.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

You're interested in temple to lane.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But don't forget.

Speaker:

The real Tuesday and Wednesday night football starts this week.

Speaker:

So if you're looking for something to do on Tuesday and ignoring everything

Speaker:

else, NACTION is here to help you out.

Speaker:

Tuesday and Wednesday is back.

Speaker:

By the way, before we end the show, I need to just say Tulsa.

Speaker:

What the hell were you doing yesterday?

Speaker:

You were favored and you lost 59 What is going on?

Speaker:

Uh, I was, I was looking up when he said Tulsa.

Speaker:

I was like, who did they play?

Speaker:

I didn't, I had no idea.

Speaker:

UAB has been terrible this season under Trent Dilfer.

Speaker:

I was going to say, did they just take one for the conference by

Speaker:

maybe preventing Trent from getting fired at the end of the year?

Speaker:

Cause like Tulsa is already in the tank.

Speaker:

I think they're under wind total is going to cash, I think next week.

Speaker:

Bye.

Speaker:

Man, keep Trent Dilfer around with the great job he's done down there at UAB.

Speaker:

They scored 45 in the first half in that game.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

they figured Tulsa's not any good.

Speaker:

It's not the Tulsa team we played in Myrtle Beach, that's for sure.

Speaker:

No, they're a lot smaller up front than they used to be.

Speaker:

Do you remember how big they looked compared to us in that bowl game?

Speaker:

Yeah, massive.

Speaker:

It was a lot of guys that tried to walk on in Oklahoma for like two

Speaker:

years and then transfer it out.

Speaker:

So they had dudes that have been on, you know, Oklahoma's o line program, which

Speaker:

has done pretty well in the league.

Speaker:

And yeah, I think that three of them were starting on the o line that year.

Speaker:

It was crazy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

What was the final in that main game yesterday gear?

Speaker:

It was like 59 to 14.

Speaker:

It was very early.

Speaker:

It was seven nothing Maine early against Oklahoma.

Speaker:

Believe me, there were some OU tweets going around that were

Speaker:

quickly deleted after I think they scored the next 35 unanswered.

Speaker:

Tough year in Norman with no O line and no receivers.

Speaker:

Yeah, the injuries have not been kind to you guys.

Speaker:

Um, well, I'm going to let Jonathan and Jarod have their parting

Speaker:

shots here and we'll end the show.

Speaker:

Um, We will start with the kicker.

Speaker:

What do you got?

Speaker:

I think that this team is good.

Speaker:

This team is young and we got a bright future ahead of us.

Speaker:

As long as we can keep the guys that we have, these young guys that we have.

Speaker:

And I, like I said before in the show, there shouldn't be any overreactions when

Speaker:

you lose the app state, especially the way we lost yesterday with those little

Speaker:

mistakes that, that really killed us.

Speaker:

Um, I think we're a good football team and obviously we still have

Speaker:

a chance to go and win the East.

Speaker:

And if we can, uh, if we can knock out these last three games, we'll

Speaker:

be right there, even if we don't win the East, if Georgia Southern doesn't

Speaker:

end up losing any of their games.

Speaker:

Like we win these last three games, we've shown that we are a very, very

Speaker:

good football team and we can hang with just about anybody at any given time.

Speaker:

And uh, It's exciting.

Speaker:

Very exciting future for us.

Speaker:

Can't disagree at all with anything you just said.

Speaker:

Jarod, you're a poet.

Speaker:

Jonathan, where you got?

Speaker:

Uh, you know, I just want to start off with a thank you.

Speaker:

First, thank you guys.

Speaker:

The monarchist crew, uh, for all you guys do the pride as well.

Speaker:

Uh, for laughing Jarod.

Speaker:

Um, but also, you know, monarch faithful out there.

Speaker:

Uh, and I'm gonna tell that into a call to action.

Speaker:

Uh, you know, we talked about exciting football team, competitive football

Speaker:

team, uh, two games at home that really, uh, you know, we'll decide

Speaker:

how we talk about this season.

Speaker:

I think, you know, we have a great opportunity to achieve some of those

Speaker:

high level goals, but we also have an opportunity to be bull eligible.

Speaker:

Uh, you know, at the end of it, right.

Speaker:

So make, bring the noise, bring the juice, you know, shout out juice, man.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Uh, we have two home games after this bi week, uh, bring the juice.

Speaker:

We already know the students are going to bring it.

Speaker:

So let's follow after them, make playing at home an asset again, uh, and really

Speaker:

support this, uh, competitive and talented team, uh, because again, they're,

Speaker:

they're playing exciting football.

Speaker:

Let's, uh, let's go out there and show them how excited we are.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, shout out juice, man.

Speaker:

The nicest person that is an OD fan.

Speaker:

By far the greatest.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He's awesome.

Speaker:

We are lucky to have him on our side.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Gary, uh, do you have a parting shot?

Speaker:

I have one and it's the only thing I had noted that I

Speaker:

didn't get to talk about today.

Speaker:

Ethan Cheng, kickoff specialist in the books with a solo tackle on Saturday.

Speaker:

It was a good tackle as well.

Speaker:

I mean, quality, I'll take it.

Speaker:

That was, that was the only thing I missed and I figured I would,

Speaker:

uh, be doing a disservice if I did not miss it on this episode with.

Speaker:

Jarod and Jonathan seeing the specialist get a solo tackle and

Speaker:

glad to see you on mute yourself.

Speaker:

Don't you don't even say it glad to see the improvement in, uh, the

Speaker:

tackling ability of our kickers.

Speaker:

If that's as far as you go, we're good.

Speaker:

We can leave it right there.

Speaker:

I had 14 tackles in my career.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

How about that?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

That's good.

Speaker:

I think eight of which were pushed 'em outta bounds, but I mean, that counts.

Speaker:

It's on the books.

Speaker:

Nobody else needs to know.

Speaker:

Just don't talk about Georgia State.

Speaker:

Shut up,

Speaker:

Oh, no.

Speaker:

Oh no.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So for my parting shots, I will say Brooklyn Brewery, if you are

Speaker:

looking for a spokesperson, this Black Ops aged in four roses barrels,

Speaker:

you'd knocked it outta the park.

Speaker:

Uh, I'm ready to talk business.

Speaker:

Uh, secondly, if you enjoy this football team and you're excited about

Speaker:

the future with Colton Joseph behind it, join the damn collective already.

Speaker:

I told you guys I would do this NPR style if I have to, but not

Speaker:

enough of you are jumping on board.

Speaker:

We should be kicking ass in the sunbelt and being the

Speaker:

number one team in the sunbelt.

Speaker:

How many fans we have and how many successful people we have in

Speaker:

this monarch community where we're not quite first yet because not

Speaker:

enough of you are jumping on board.

Speaker:

What are we doing?

Speaker:

We want this to continue to build and you're buying season tickets.

Speaker:

You're donating.

Speaker:

Why are you not jumping on board with the collective?

Speaker:

I don't get it.

Speaker:

Jump on board, support this team, support this program, or we will need more

Speaker:

music like that to describe our game.

Speaker:

Let it play, Gary.

Speaker:

Let it ring out.

Speaker:

It'll depress everyone.

Speaker:

We don't get more people doing the collective.

Speaker:

That's the music you're you watch OD football.

Speaker:

The first copyright strike for Old Dominion Monarchist's YouTube account.

Speaker:

Join the DM Collective already.

Speaker:

What are y'all doing?

Speaker:

You get 10 percent off whenever you come hang out with us at Afterglow.

Speaker:

You get to support this program, and coming soon, you're gonna get

Speaker:

access to information and content you won't be able to get anywhere else.

Speaker:

We haven't announced that yet, but it's coming.

Speaker:

Uh oh.

Speaker:

Things change, Mox.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

And I don't want your life.

Speaker:

Uh, all right.

Speaker:

Thank you guys for joining us.

Speaker:

Thank you, Jonathan and Jarod, for being such good sports and joining the show.

Speaker:

Shout out to Jonathan for becoming a Hall of Famer.

Speaker:

We're really proud of you.

Speaker:

Happy to be your friend.

Speaker:

Jarod, you belong in the hall with him.

Speaker:

I would have loved for you guys to go in together.

Speaker:

That would have been such a beautiful moment.

Speaker:

That'd have been cool.

Speaker:

But we can live.

Speaker:

With you eventually getting in, right?

Speaker:

I hope so.

Speaker:

Thank you guys so much.

Speaker:

We have a great time every time we're on.

Speaker:

So, uh, ask us anytime we'll be here.

Speaker:

You know where to find us.

Speaker:

We do.

Speaker:

On that note, go Monarchs.

Speaker:

Go Monarchs.

Speaker:

Hey, I'm looking forward to golfing before Arkansas State, just saying.

Speaker:

It's happening.

Speaker:

We're going to.

Speaker:

We're winning in two games.

Speaker:

All right, Gary, you got a party for us?

Speaker:

Go

Speaker:

Monarchs.
