So we were going to Puttshack with Sam and Brian, her, her boyfriend.
Kayla:She text me on, she goes, I will pay a thousand dollars to
Kayla:not have Brian come with us.
Chris:Fuck you, Brian.
Chris:Hey, adventures.
Chris:Welcome to Let's Just Go podcast.
Chris:I'm Chris,
Kayla:and I'm Kayla.
Kayla:And today we're gonna talk about a Disneyland good neighbor
Kayla:hotel that I personally love.
Kayla:Um, it's my favorite.
Kayla:Everybody I know loves it.
Kayla:It was recently remodeled.
Kayla:But first I think we need to talk about what a Goodneighbor hotel is.
Chris:Yes.
Chris:Because, um, I would rather vacation in my garage than stay at a Walt
Chris:Disney World Goodneighbor hotel.
Chris:Unless, unless it's the four season.
Kayla:Right, right.
Chris:However, in Disneyland is a very different experience and sometimes even.
Chris:Closer to the parks than some of the Disneyland resort hotels.
Chris:And almost always more economical, but not necessarily compromising quality.
Kayla:Right?
Kayla:Yeah.
Kayla:So there are a variety of different categories of Goodneighbor hotels.
Kayla:So when you think of Disneyland resort hotels, so the Disney
Kayla:owned properties, they all sort of fall into the same bucket.
Kayla:Unlike Walt Disney World, where you've got your value, your
Kayla:moderate, and your deluxe.
Kayla:I would say that.
Kayla:Disneyland, they're all in that deluxe category.
Kayla:Just different price points along that category.
Kayla:And with Goodneighbor hotels at Disneyland, you are
Kayla:typically walking distance.
Kayla:I would say that 80% of the Goodneighbor hotels are walking distance.
Kayla:They're called good neighbor hotels because they have a contract with Disney.
Kayla:Disney has vetted them and said, yes, this is a place that we think
Kayla:meets our standards and is an acceptable place to send our guests.
Kayla:You can then make a vacation package with these good neighbor hotels in the same way
Kayla:that you would with an on property hotel.
Kayla:So you pay that $200 deposit, have your tickets and your hotel all put
Kayla:together in one nice shiny package.
Kayla:Um.
Kayla:But there's, there are a lot of different options.
Kayla:So if you are a Marriott person, there's Marriotts.
Kayla:If you're a Hilton person, there's Hilton's.
Kayla:If you're a Motel Six person, there is a Motel six.
Kayla:I know, I know.
Chris:So.
Chris:I don't think anyone's a Motel six person.
Chris:At least not intentionally,
Kayla:you know,
Chris:right
Kayla:there.
Kayla:The one caveat I will say is that if you are wanting to do a
Kayla:good neighbor package, it is the equivalent of booking third party.
Kayla:So if you are trying to get your points, you're not gonna get them booking a
Kayla:package, but you get a lot of perks.
Chris:Get a lot of perks and best part is you're just putting that $200
Chris:deposit down and not having to pay for tickets, uh, in full that are
Chris:non-refundable, all that good stuff.
Chris:Right.
Chris:So the perks outweigh Yeah.
Chris:The points in this case.
Kayla:Yeah, and you can still, so I had clients actually stay at
Kayla:Marriott a couple of months ago.
Kayla:They did a Goodneighbor hotel package, but they were the kind of people that still
Kayla:really wanna have access to the lounge and so they were still able to go and purchase
Kayla:day of check-in lounge access at Marriott.
Kayla:So like you're still able to take advantage typically, as long as
Kayla:there's availability of the different.
Kayla:Things that may be incentivized if you're wanting to utilize
Kayla:your points or your membership.
Kayla:Um, so that's just something to keep in mind too.
Chris:And usually once you're on site in those places, specifically Marriotts
Chris:things you do purchase, like at a spa or any, you do get points for that.
Chris:It's just the stay itself.
Chris:You're just not getting points on there.
Chris:Yeah, the stay.
Chris:So, all right, so we're talking about Candy Cane Lane.
Chris:I know that's not the name of it.
Chris:I hate you.
Kayla:It's Candy Cane Inn, but I, I can't help.
Chris:I mean, who came up with that name?
Chris:It's so.
Chris:Like name something Christmas related.
Chris:It's, and who doesn't like get a warm heart?
Chris:It's so
Kayla:funny because I was just like trying to Google to see what year
Kayla:they were they opened, which is 1957.
Kayla:So they've been around for pretty much as long as the parks the, as long
Kayla:as Disneyland Park has been around.
Kayla:Yeah.
Kayla:That being said, I see something here that says, uh, the hotel opened on Christmas
Kayla:Day and they had a different name.
Kayla:In mind, but Walt Disney didn't like the name.
Kayla:And so they named it Candy Cane Inn because it opened on Christmas.
Kayla:There's nothing Candy Cane.
Chris:No, it's not Christmas theme.
Chris:But if you say to me, do you want to go to Candy Cane Inn?
Chris:I'm, I'm saying yes.
Chris:I won't even say where it is.
Chris:I'm like, yeah, that sounds
Kayla:Yeah.
Chris:Magical.
Kayla:Right.
Kayla:Take me there.
Kayla:So Candy cane in.
Kayla:Is my favorite Goodneighbor hotel.
Kayla:Um, I've been going there since I, like, I think my very first visit, we stayed
Kayla:at Candy Cane Inn in the early nineties.
Chris:So what do you love about it?
Chris:What's the, what's the, oh
Kayla:my gosh.
Chris:Outside of the nostalgia, because Right, right, right.
Chris:You got the, which
Kayla:the rooms were also like, it's been around since 1957, but actually when the
Kayla:parks closed in 2020, they took that as an opportunity to completely renovate.
Kayla:So every single room was renovated.
Kayla:I think they reopened in 2023.
Kayla:So it took them a while to reopen, but the rooms are all like
Kayla:newly furnished hardwood floors.
Kayla:Like it doesn't feel like it's from the fifties, which is great.
Kayla:Okay.
Kayla:Things because there
Chris:are, there are some good neighbor hotels who have not been renovated.
Chris:There are.
Chris:That is true.
Kayla:And I will say the one caveat about good neighbor hotels as well,
Kayla:I know I already said there was a caveat, so this is actually probably
Kayla:a second caveat if not a third, is that a lot of them are motel style.
Kayla:Candy Cane Inn is one of those.
Kayla:So you are gonna have a two or three story, uh, building.
Kayla:Typically, there may not be elevators, you're gonna have outdoor stairwells.
Kayla:Your room opens to the outside, uh, typically to a parking lot.
Kayla:So
Kayla:it's how, it sounds awful, but it, it's not, I mean, I guess if you're used
Kayla:to it, it's not that big of a deal.
Chris:Well, it's also, I mean, motel style in California,
Chris:in Southern California is.
Chris:Yeah, not so rough.
Kayla:Yeah.
Kayla:If it's motel style in Florida where it's pouring down rain, it is not great.
Kayla:But what I, so things I love about Candy Cane Inn, one super easy walk.
Kayla:You're not having to cross any busy roads because you are
Kayla:literally backed up to cars land.
Kayla:So you can see the backside of the cars land like dioramas from.
Kayla:Candy Cane Inn, which I think is great.
Kayla:So you're crossing, there's two crosswalks.
Kayla:One of them is the bus entrance in and out of the parks.
Kayla:So like the shuttle bus for the, uh, parking lot.
Kayla:It's off site.
Kayla:Uh, and then another one is crossing a street, but it's
Kayla:not a, it's not a busy street.
Kayla:Um, it's not like a Katella or a Harbor, which are the two streets that intersect,
Kayla:um, right at the edge of property.
Kayla:So I love that.
Kayla:Not only is it an easy walk, I. It's also got a free shuttle,
Kayla:like branded to the hotel.
Kayla:So if you don't want to walk, you can catch the candy cane inn shuttle and
Kayla:it'll take you to and from the parks.
Chris:How long is the walk?
Kayla:Like maybe 10 minutes Maybe.
Kayla:It's a very short walk.
Kayla:Okay.
Kayla:So you're not saving a ton of time, but if you are trying to wrangle three kids
Kayla:and it's 10:00 PM and you are from the east coast, so it's really 1:00 AM and
Kayla:they're exhausted and screaming at you.
Kayla:Uh, throwing 'em on a shuttle is probably gonna be the easier path for you.
Chris:Yeah.
Chris:That might be.
Kayla:Or you've got hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth
Kayla:of droids and lightsabers.
Kayla:Yeah.
Chris:Merch.
Chris:So less than a mile walk.
Chris:Yeah, for sure.
Chris:Yeah.
Chris:So location's great.
Chris:Price is pretty good too, right?
Kayla:Price is pretty good.
Kayla:It is.
Kayla:I will say comparatively to other like motel style options that
Kayla:you have for good neighbors, it's gonna be on the higher end.
Kayla:But it's still gonna be cheaper than like your Marriott or your jw or even
Kayla:like another hotel that we're gonna talk about is, uh, the Courtyard Marriott.
Kayla:'cause they've got a waterpark.
Kayla:So like there's, there's trade offs.
Kayla:Um.
Kayla:But price point wise, they have different levels too.
Kayla:So the different levels get you just like extra benefits essentially.
Kayla:Um, but everybody has an included continental breakfast and
Kayla:it's a, it's a good breakfast.
Kayla:Um, there's usually like hardboiled eggs and yogurt and things like that.
Kayla:So it's, it's a good option.
Kayla:It's also one of the few, like family owned and operated hotels in the area.
Kayla:Almost everything around is a chain.
Kayla:Um, and Candy Cane Inn is not that way, which I personally love to
Kayla:support a small business when I can.
Kayla:So it's really great to see that we're, what, 70 years, almost past when
Kayla:they opened, and they're still going strong as a little independent owned.
Kayla:Hotel.
Chris:It's the location.
Chris:Yeah.
Chris:So it's right near the JW then?
Kayla:No, it's on the, no, the JW is around the corner.
Kayla:So you are, you're not having to turn at all.
Chris:Got it.
Kayla:You are literally, like the property ends on Harbor and then Candy
Kayla:Cane Inn is right there before you get to the light where CVS and Rite Aid are.
Kayla:Mm-hmm.
Kayla:It's, it's before that.
Kayla:Okay.
Kayla:Like that's how close it is.
Kayla:It's just on the Disneyland side of, so to give everybody context, there
Kayla:are hotels that are closer, but you have to cross a very busy street.
Kayla:In order to get to Disneyland.
Kayla:So this is one of the closest hotels and this is the closest hotel on
Kayla:the Disneyland side of the road.
Chris:So let's talk amenities.
Chris:And you, we know the rooms have been renovated.
Chris:Do they do the rooms sleep?
Chris:Four or five?
Chris:I
Kayla:believe they sleep a maximum of four.
Chris:Okay.
Kayla:So they're not gonna be a good option if you have more than four.
Kayla:They um.
Kayla:Yeah, all of the rooms are the same size.
Kayla:They're all the same layout.
Kayla:So there's, there's a difference in level of service, which I'm gonna be honest with
Kayla:you, I don't remember the specifics 'cause I've only stayed like the basic level.
Kayla:Um, but you get like extra water bottles in your room and things like
Kayla:that if you pay for the higher levels.
Chris:What about.
Chris:Like amenities with pool.
Chris:I mean, generally all the, most of the good neighbors
Chris:though, are real small pools.
Chris:I mean, they're, you're not going there for the pool, but
Kayla:yeah, it's in the middle of their parking lot.
Kayla:Um, it's funny, there's someone on TikTok who's like reviewed every
Kayla:good neighbor Disney Land Hotel or like, she's like working her
Kayla:way through reviewing all of them.
Kayla:And her complaint is always like, and then the pool is in
Kayla:the middle of the parking lot.
Chris:Is it raised?
Chris:Is it raised above the like?
Chris:Uh,
Kayla:no, it's not.
Kayla:It's in ground.
Chris:Okay.
Kayla:Yeah, it's literally the same level as the park.
Kayla:Like you can see cars from the pool and people in cars can see you in the pool.
Chris:Interesting.
Kayla:But it's a cute little pool area.
Kayla:It's not, it's not a bad pool area, but yeah, it's just in the middle's,
Kayla:a pool in the middle of a parking lot.
Chris:What don't you like about it besides maybe the pool in
Chris:the middle of a parking lot?
Kayla:I mean, I honestly haven't stayed there since they remodeled,
Kayla:so I didn't love how dated it was.
Kayla:But now it sounds like that has changed and it's much better.
Kayla:And I, I love a hot breakfast, but also like beggars can't be choosers.
Kayla:So if you're gonna give me free food, I'll eat it.
Kayla:But like, I would love some bacon personally.
Chris:That's fair.
Chris:So they, I mean, but include a breakfast though is still pretty nice.
Chris:Nice.
Chris:And I
Kayla:will say that it seems like more and more good neighbor hotels
Kayla:are stopping doing the free breakfast.
Kayla:Which is too bad.
Chris:I think one of the things we've talked about before, but I've
Chris:never stayed in a good neighbor hotel.
Chris:I have toured them.
Chris:I've never stayed.
Chris:And that is in part
Kayla:Chris is too bougie, everyone.
Chris:Well, that is accurate, but if I'm being honest, if I'm gonna fly six
Chris:hours to right across the country for six hours, then get in a car and drive
Chris:50 minutes from the LAX to Anaheim.
Chris:Right?
Chris:I'm not staying.
Chris:In a good neighbor.
Chris:I'm, I'm doing the whole experience.
Chris:Right.
Chris:I'm doing it up.
Chris:Where for you it was like, you, you could easily get there
Chris:living on the West coast mm-hmm.
Chris:As a child and, you know, it was a much different experience.
Kayla:Yeah.
Kayla:It's a good spot though.
Kayla:If you're, if you're going to want to stay somewhere, but you're wanting to save some
Kayla:money, it's a good, it's a good place.
Kayla:Again, they've been around since 1957, so like, there's obviously
Kayla:a reason that they're still around and not like rebranded or.
Kayla:You know, some big hotel chain hasn't bought them up,
Kayla:so I think it's a great spot.
Kayla:That being said, we are gonna talk about other Goodneighbor hotels because I think
Kayla:that it's important we didn't do this with Walt Disney World Resorts because there
Kayla:are so many Walt Disney World Resorts, but that's not the case at Disneyland.
Kayla:And I would say a solid 90% of people that are staying in the Anaheim
Kayla:area are staying at a good neighbor hotel and not at a Disneyland hotel.
Kayla:So
Chris:mostly out of.
Chris:Like necessity.
Chris:Yeah.
Chris:'cause there's just not enough.
Kayla:Yeah.
Kayla:And I will say too, the, the other thing about Disneyland that's a
Kayla:drastically different than Walt Disney World is that as soon as Disneyland
Kayla:opened, all these companies came in and bought up all the property around.
Kayla:So you really are, it's so easily accessible where Walt Disney
Kayla:World, if you are not staying on Walt Disney World Property, it's
Kayla:a pain in the ass to get anywhere.
Chris:Right.
Kayla:So that's not the case at Disneyland, and that's why I think there
Kayla:are so many Goodneighbor hotels too.
Kayla:Yeah.
Chris:Wish I would've bought land around Disneyland.
Kayla:You weren't even alive.
Chris:No, I know, but
Kayla:if only someone in your family had had that foresight all those years ago.
Kayla:Generations ago.
Kayla:So we will be talking about some other.
Kayla:Disneyland, Goodneighbor hotels.
Kayla:Keep listening and until next time, let's just go.
