Shownotes

In this episode, I talk about why tutors often feel stuck after a period of business growth. It is rarely about a lack of demand or effort. More often, it is because the tutoring business has outgrown the way it was originally structured.

I share why pushing harder with more marketing, more hours, or more activity does not usually solve the problem. Instead, progress often comes from pausing, thinking strategically, and redesigning how your business supports your time, income, and long term goals.

Enjoy :-)

Sumantha:

Most tutors who feel stuck are not failing. They are often really busy. They are in demand and their diary is full, or at least close to it. And that is not just with tutoring but with everything in general. From the outside things look fine. The income is being generated, students are getting results, parents are happy and the business is doing what it is supposed to do on paper.

Sumantha:

But underneath that there is often a sense of disconnect. There is a feeling that things do not quite fit anymore. Something is not feeling right. The business is not creating the time, flexibility, or options that you hoped it would create. And when you look ahead it can be hard to see how this version of the business supports the future you actually want.

Sumantha:

That is what this episode is about. For those of you who are new here, I am Samantha and I am a business mentor for tutors and education business owners. Before that I was a qualified business trainer and a teacher, and right now I am an independent tutor myself.

Sumantha:

I mainly work with tutors who want to earn well while protecting their time. They want to build businesses that support their life rather than consuming it. Feeling stuck is one of the most common things that brings tutors my way, whether that is through one to one work or inside my mastermind.

Sumantha:

Often they feel stuck because they have outgrown the way their business currently works. They cannot quite see how to change things. Feeling stuck often appears after a period of growth and that is really not unusual.

Sumantha:

Early on, effort creates momentum. More students lead to more income and saying yes helps move the business forward. But over time the same approach stops producing the same results because those results are not always aligned with you anymore.

Sumantha:

The business has not stalled. It has simply stopped responding to effort in the same way it once did. This is where many tutors misread what is happening. They assume something external needs fixing.

Sumantha:

They think they need more visibility, more marketing, or more activity. But in reality this phase often appears because the business has outgrown the way it was originally set up.

Sumantha:

Tutors who feel stuck often share a very similar profile. They are capable, trusted and in demand. They know they are good at what they do. But their business has become tightly configured.

Sumantha:

Income is closely tied to the time they personally deliver. Their timetable rules the week and much of their time is spent firefighting and keeping everything running. There is very little room to adjust without a personal cost.

Sumantha:

One client summed it up perfectly. She said, I am doing well but I cannot see how this version of my business supports my life in the long term. Variations of that sentence come up again and again.

Sumantha:

Feeling stuck is not about lacking motivation or even lacking options. It is often because you are caught in a cycle and something needs to cut through it. But it is difficult to think creatively when you are on the hamster wheel.

Sumantha:

When there is no time to pause and create headspace it becomes very hard to think strategically. I find myself in that situation from time to time as well. I tighten up processes and delegate more, which helps for a while.

Sumantha:

But businesses grow and evolve, and then they need to be reviewed again. Your priorities change and your business should adapt with you. Over time I have learned to approach this differently with support from business coaches.

Sumantha:

Instead of focusing only on actions, they helped me step into a leadership role within my business. That shift in mindset is important. However this is often the moment when tutors try to push harder instead.

Sumantha:

They extend their availability and take on more rather than redesigning how the business works. But when a business is already full, more effort often increases pressure rather than creating movement.

Sumantha:

This is when tutors begin to feel boxed in because the structure of the business has no flexibility left. Progress at this stage does not come from doing more. It comes from thinking more clearly.

Sumantha:

The tutors who move through this phase usually slow down. They pause, reassess and redesign instead of expanding. That might involve rethinking offers, pricing models or how income is distributed.

Sumantha:

If you feel stuck right now it does not mean you have failed or done something wrong. It usually means your business needs redesigning so it supports the life and future you actually want. Pause, listen to what that feeling is telling you, and then decide what needs to change.
