“Hot Dog”

Please enjoy:

by Ben Goodridge You could always tell the tourists in New York City based on how they reacted when one of the werewolves came bounding out of the trees in Central Park.

Please enjoy:

Some cried out, some ran.

Please enjoy:

A little boy took one look and wet himself copiously.

Please enjoy:

Others watched as if staring at a traffic accident, while some moved out of the way

Please enjoy:

and let him pass,

Please enjoy:

nodding to him as he loped off down the trail.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, it's okay, it's Hot Dog!”

Please enjoy:

cried Lukey, the food-cart vendor who worked the edge of the Reservoir.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, Hot Dog, how's it hanging?”

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog waddled over to him,

Please enjoy:

eyes wide, tongue lolling.

Please enjoy:

He looked like a giant puppy.

Please enjoy:

His tail wagged enthusiastically.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, Lukey!” Lukey pulled a hot dog out of a compartment in the side of the cart and tossed it to him.

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog leaped up and caught it between his powerful jaws.

Please enjoy:

It disappeared. Lukey pulled out another hot dog and tossed it.

Please enjoy:

The hot dogs were well past their sell-by date,

Please enjoy:

beyond safe for humans,

Please enjoy:

but the werewolves had no trouble digesting them.

Please enjoy:

By now, a few lookie-loos had gathered to watch.

Please enjoy:

Lukey liked Hot Dog because he was good for business;

Please enjoy:

a cross between a monster and a clown,

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog would roll on his back

Please enjoy:

and put his feet in the air,

Please enjoy:

trot circles around the food cart, or just bend his head down for a tussle between the ears.

Please enjoy:

He was about as dangerous as a big dumb pet.

Please enjoy:

Central Park had four werewolves now.

Please enjoy:

They hadn't told anyone where they were from,

Please enjoy:

but they'd probably split from one of the Packs near the Canadian border,

Please enjoy:

where there were a few secluded and inscrutable villages

Please enjoy:

hidden away among the trees.

Please enjoy:

Once the police had their trust,

Please enjoy:

they made themselves at home around the Ramble and the Reservoir,

Please enjoy:

keeping fed on the trash that humans discarded.

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog had often said

Please enjoy:

that an entire pack could live on the food that humans threw away in Manhattan without transforming the ecosystem one tiny bit.

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog and Fire Hydrant

Please enjoy:

had both been interviewed on morning television,

Please enjoy:

achieving that sort of

Please enjoy:

background fifteen-minutes that many people acquire,

Please enjoy:

and attracting tourists of their own

Please enjoy:

who came to Central Park in the hopes of catching a glimpse of them,

Please enjoy:

racing along the walking trails

Please enjoy:

or digging through the bins.

Please enjoy:

The police were quick to assure the public that the werewolves

Please enjoy:

weren't dangerous,

Please enjoy:

but choosing not to believe such a thing was part of their appeal.

Please enjoy:

As much as they acted like squealing puppies in public,

Please enjoy:

they were werewolves, after all,

Please enjoy:

with all the mystery and enchantment that implied.

Please enjoy:

They did, for instance,

Please enjoy:

bring their religion with them from upstate,

Please enjoy:

an earth-sniffing,

Please enjoy:

tree-hugging paganism that considered peeing on a bush a holy act,

Please enjoy:

and their chalk sigils

Please enjoy:

were all over the park.

Please enjoy:

“Mommy, can I have my picture taken with Hot Dog?”

Please enjoy:

said the little girl,

Please enjoy:

and Mommy said, “I think you should ask Hot Dog, dear.”

Please enjoy:

And the little girl asked Hot Dog, who said, “Sure!

Please enjoy:

I'll sit here, and you stand there.”

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog sat a lot when he was out and about in daylight.

Please enjoy:

There was something very non-threatening and innocent about sitting.

Please enjoy:

The little girl stood next to him,

Please enjoy:

and the camera clicked,

Please enjoy:

and Hot Dog grinned a huge grin

Please enjoy:

and loped off down the trail.

Please enjoy:

If he'd charged for photos, he could have made a lot of money.

Please enjoy:

There were over a hundred hours of him on YouTube,

Please enjoy:

though he wasn't doing anything of interest –

Please enjoy:

walking around, paddling about in the Reservoir,

Please enjoy:

bathing in the fountain,

Please enjoy:

snacking on Lukey's hot dogs.

Please enjoy:

He was fascinating,

Please enjoy:

and knew he was fascinating,

Please enjoy:

and he and his three friends had taken pains to make room in their lives for privacy and secrecy.

Please enjoy:

The police had no idea where they lived,

Please enjoy:

not for lack of trying.

Please enjoy:

They only cast spells at

Please enjoy:

night, because it was quieter

Please enjoy:

and they were more effective

Please enjoy:

and no one would come along with a video camera

Please enjoy:

and put them on LiveLeak.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, look, it's Hot Dog!”

Please enjoy:

shouted someone as he trotted along the pathway towards the Ramble. “Hey, Hot Dog!

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog waved. It was a beautiful day,

Please enjoy:

a hot day, and food was everywhere.

Please enjoy:

When the day was at its hottest,

Please enjoy:

Taxicab swam in the reservoir to cool down.

Please enjoy:

The water wasn't very clean –

Please enjoy:

he could get cleaner water if he needed it,

Please enjoy:

but cleanliness wasn't as important as the open sky

Please enjoy:

and the whispering trees.

Please enjoy:

He loved to swim,

Please enjoy:

loved the feel of water in his fur and pelt,

Please enjoy:

loved to spread the fingers of his paws wide

Please enjoy:

and run the water through them.

Please enjoy:

He surfaced and pulled himself gracefully onto a rock,

Please enjoy:

his sparkling body shining like a statue in the summer sun.

Please enjoy:

He took a deep, cleansing breath

Please enjoy:

and wiped his hair out of his eyes.

Please enjoy:

His tongue ran over his long, sharp teeth, and he shook down...

Please enjoy:

“Hey, Dad, look! It's a werewolf! Look at the werewolf!”

Please enjoy:

“Hey, werewolf!” called Dad.

Please enjoy:

Taxicab looked. Dad was about forty,

Please enjoy:

and had the summer smell of a tourist in an unfamiliar, exciting city.

Please enjoy:

Son was twelve, at most.

Please enjoy:

They looked related.

Please enjoy:

Shock of black hair, same build,

Please enjoy:

hints of the old man's jawline in the boy's face.

Please enjoy:

“Which werewolf are you?”

Please enjoy:

said Dad. “Taxicab,”

Please enjoy:

said Taxicab, hopping down from the rock.

Please enjoy:

He ran his paws through his mane,

Please enjoy:

making muscles move along his chest and belly.

Please enjoy:

The City had mandated that all the werewolves wear shorts for reasons of dignity,

Please enjoy:

and Taxicab preferred cutoff jeans,

Please enjoy:

because they had pockets for putting things into.

Please enjoy:

“Can we get a picture with you, Taxicab?”

Please enjoy:

said Dad. Taxicab nodded,

Please enjoy:

grinning. He knelt on the walkway,

Please enjoy:

ears up, eyes opened a bit wide.

Please enjoy:

He'd seen photos of himself that made him look like a stuffed toy,

Please enjoy:

and it was useful to his peace of mind and privacy

Please enjoy:

to know that photos of him betraying wide-eyed innocence

Please enjoy:

were floating around the Internet.

Please enjoy:

“Come on over here, son,”

Please enjoy:

said Dad. Taxicab saw the boy standing in his peripheral vision,

Please enjoy:

and beamed brightly at the camera.

Please enjoy:

There was a sharp pain in his side just as the camera clicked –

Please enjoy:

the boy had kicked him as hard as he could in the ribs,

Please enjoy:

a roundhouse, board-splitting kick of a sort learned in the wrong kind of karate school.

Please enjoy:

He clutched his side

Please enjoy:

and put his other paw out to the pavement as Dad said, “Nice one, son!”

Please enjoy:

and slapped a high-five with the boy. “Take a look!”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, man,” said the boy,

Please enjoy:

looking at the camera screen.

Please enjoy:

“Look at the look on his face.

Please enjoy:

I got him real good, didn't I?”

Please enjoy:

“You sure did,” said Dad.

Please enjoy:

They were walking away down the path now,

Please enjoy:

the werewolf forgotten,

Please enjoy:

and Taxicab clutched his side

Please enjoy:

and heaved himself to his feet.

Please enjoy:

He didn't think he'd broken a rib,

Please enjoy:

but he was going to be one big bruise for a while.

Please enjoy:

He stared after the receding family,

Please enjoy:

an efficient, effective killing machine,

Please enjoy:

claws and teeth and jaws capable of crushing the bones of a bull,

Please enjoy:

he could have stripped them both to their bones in a few minutes.

Please enjoy:

Still, he'd trained for this,

Please enjoy:

and no anger invaded his mind.

Please enjoy:

He closed his eyes

Please enjoy:

and opened his mind to stillness,

Please enjoy:

calm, quiet and peace.

Please enjoy:

There was the smell of the water,

Please enjoy:

there was the whisper of the trees.

Please enjoy:

The pain ebbed. This didn't mean that Taxicab would let the pair go easily.

Please enjoy:

However, he would not have been assigned to Central Park by his Pack

Please enjoy:

if he was given to fits of anger over perceived slights.

Please enjoy:

This was a dangerous job,

Please enjoy:

and the stakes were far too high.

Please enjoy:

He loped along the banking of the Reservoir, staying low.

Please enjoy:

His ears twitched

Please enjoy:

as he heard the inane chatter of a boy and his father walking through the park,

Please enjoy:

as he passed them unnoticed,

Please enjoy:

invisible, and silent,

Please enjoy:

entirely the predator he was bred to be,

Please enjoy:

not one bit the bounding puppy he pretended to be.

Please enjoy:

A hundred yards down the path,

Please enjoy:

he reached into his wet pocket and pulled out a piece of sidewalk chalk.

Please enjoy:

He was downwind and had perhaps thirty seconds,

Please enjoy:

which was ample time.

Please enjoy:

Quickly, he drew a large circle on the ground –

Please enjoy:

it was a perfect circle as far as any eye could tell,

Please enjoy:

drawn with a practiced hand well-accustomed to drawing it.

Please enjoy:

He drew a second circle in the first,

Please enjoy:

a triangle. He sniffed,

Please enjoy:

then drew a sign for the wind direction.

Please enjoy:

A moment with his eyes closed,

Please enjoy:

and he tagged off the directions –

Please enjoy:

north, south, east, west.

Please enjoy:

Around the edge of the circle

Please enjoy:

he drew ancient and arcane writing,

Please enjoy:

a language long lost to the human race and rare even among the Tribes of Animal-Men that still haunted the endless forests of the north.

Please enjoy:

Sign for water,

Please enjoy:

sign for wind. He whispered an incantation –

Please enjoy:

dammit, how old was the boy?

Please enjoy:

Twelve? Thirteen? Twelve.

Please enjoy:

Twelve-four. He knew.

Please enjoy:

He wrote more characters –

Please enjoy:

numbers, this time, base-eight,

Please enjoy:

non-Arabic digits in blue chalk on the sidewalk.

Please enjoy:

The chalk could be any color –

Please enjoy:

Taxicab happened to like blue.

Please enjoy:

The sigil complete,

Please enjoy:

the boy and his father coming around the corner and debating soft pretzels for a snack,

Please enjoy:

Taxicab bounded into the bushes

Please enjoy:

and effectively disappeared.

Please enjoy:

Now was the time

Please enjoy:

for absolute focus.

Please enjoy:

His eyes were closed,

Please enjoy:

but he could still see.

Please enjoy:

Just drawing the sigil

Please enjoy:

had drawn the magic in him to the surface,

Please enjoy:

and his fur seemed to writhe

Please enjoy:

and ripple with it,

Please enjoy:

as if things were crawling under his skin.

Please enjoy:

When he exhaled, there was a faint puff of blue smoke.

Please enjoy:

He incanted, over and over.

Please enjoy:

The boy stepped on the sigil without looking at it,

Please enjoy:

and Taxicab gasped.

Please enjoy:

Youth and arrogance surged up through him,

Please enjoy:

a nightmare of ignorance and idiocy.

Please enjoy:

He knew the boy's age down to the hour,

Please enjoy:

and whispered “Dachem.”

Please enjoy:

Conclude. Finish. Complete.

Please enjoy:

The boy walked on.

Please enjoy:

Invigorated, Taxicab stepped out of the bushes

Please enjoy:

and watched them go.

Please enjoy:

There was no sign of any change,

Please enjoy:

nothing different at all.

Please enjoy:

That was as it should be.

Please enjoy:

Later that day, a California businessman asked if he and his client could have their picture taken with Taxicab.

Please enjoy:

He agreed. All was right with the world.

Please enjoy:

The police had, occasionally, attempted to find the den of the werewolves.

Please enjoy:

This wasn't surprising –

Please enjoy:

technically, they were transient,

Please enjoy:

homeless, uncontrolled.

Please enjoy:

Once they had demonstrated to the relevant authorities that they were perfectly capable of controlling themselves,

Please enjoy:

the searches ended.

Please enjoy:

Reporters still gave it a try,

Please enjoy:

but the magic that concealed their den was too simple to be broken

Please enjoy:

by fumbling around in the Ramble.

Please enjoy:

Besides, the werewolves picked up trash all over the park.

Please enjoy:

They were good business for the vendors and attracted tourists.

Please enjoy:

Now, of course, no one wanted to chase them away.

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog and Fire Hydrant lay against each other in their cluttered, cozy den,

Please enjoy:

fur against fur. There were no females in their little Pack.

Please enjoy:

Trash Can lay in the other pile of blankets,

Please enjoy:

the one he shared with Taxicab.

Please enjoy:

His fur was a wild patchwork of colors,

Please enjoy:

a calico werewolf with a torn ear.

Please enjoy:

Trash Can had made the papers some months ago after saving the life of a child

Please enjoy:

who was being abducted from the bandstand.

Please enjoy:

He loved children

Please enjoy:

because he had lost his own,

Please enjoy:

though no human knew that, or ever would.

Please enjoy:

He read yesterday's New York Times with practiced interest.

Please enjoy:

A shadow fell over the mouth of the den,

Please enjoy:

and Taxicab crawled in.

Please enjoy:

His side was still bruised,

Please enjoy:

and he warned Trash Can to be careful as he lay next to him in the blankets.

Please enjoy:

“Rock?” said Hot Dog,

Please enjoy:

marinating in sweat.

Please enjoy:

“Twelve year old boy with a hiking boot,”

Please enjoy:

said Taxicab. Fire Hydrant winced.

Please enjoy:

Trash Can elbowed himself up.

Please enjoy:

“You didn't hurt him, did you?”

Please enjoy:

Taxicab shook his head.

Please enjoy:

“I remembered my lessons well.”

Please enjoy:

“Good,” said Trash Can, stroking his face.

Please enjoy:

“Did you Cast?” “Oh, hell yes,” said Taxicab,

Please enjoy:

grinning hugely. There was a wonderful devil about him,

Please enjoy:

a joyous evil worth celebrating.

Please enjoy:

“I lay the sigil a hundred yards down the road.

Please enjoy:

The connection was very powerful.”

Please enjoy:

“Violence usually creates a strong connection,”

Please enjoy:

said Hot Dog, elbowing himself up.

Please enjoy:

“What happened? Did he ask you for a picture?”

Please enjoy:

Taxicab nodded. “Waited until I wasn't looking,

Please enjoy:

then socked me one.

Please enjoy:

He'd obviously been planning it for months.

Please enjoy:

It could have happened to any of us.”

Please enjoy:

“Some humans like to keep images like that,”

Please enjoy:

said Fire Hydrant.

Please enjoy:

“It establishes dominance.

Please enjoy:

A boy struck a beast twice his size and capable of unzipping him like a banana.

Please enjoy:

That'll be worth status in his circle of friends.”

Please enjoy:

“Well, it would, if I hadn't drained the picture for the spell,”

Please enjoy:

said Taxicab. “They're in for a shock when they get a look at that SD card later.”

Please enjoy:

“Still, twelve is a bit young for the spell,”

Please enjoy:

said Fire Hydrant.

Please enjoy:

He started tying Hot Dog's hair into braids. “What's the

Please enjoy:

latency?” “Three years, I think.

Please enjoy:

Besides, he was twelve years, four months, and thirteen days.

Please enjoy:

You cast against a boy who was only twelve years, four months, and nine days, and with a shorter latency.”

Please enjoy:

“The boy was quite far along in his physical development,”

Please enjoy:

said Fire Hydrant.

Please enjoy:

“At least you gave the spell a decent duration.

Please enjoy:

Three years from now, your product will look in the mirror

Please enjoy:

and suffer quite a shock.

Please enjoy:

Do you think he'll come to you?”

Please enjoy:

“I hope so,” said Taxicab.

Please enjoy:

“I love teaching. My last sire just wandered off and joined one of the Borderlands tribes.”

Please enjoy:

He snuggled against Trash Can and said,

Please enjoy:

“So how many does that make so far?”

Please enjoy:

“Seventeen for me,” said Hot Dog.

Please enjoy:

“Eleven here,” said Fire Hydrant.

Please enjoy:

“I've had nineteen,”

Please enjoy:

said Trash Can. “And the boy makes fifteen for me,” said Taxicab.

Please enjoy:

“That makes sixty two, with twenty transformations already.

Please enjoy:

All haters of one kind or another.

Please enjoy:

Initial reports from Iowa, Michigan, Louisiana, and Maine indicate that many of them are settling in quite well.

Please enjoy:

Our Masters are very pleased with us, my friends.

Please enjoy:

Our ranks are bolstered by making our enemies into our brothers and sisters.”

Please enjoy:

He lay on his back, the pain in his side ebbing.

Please enjoy:

“I'm so tired,” he said.

Please enjoy:

“Post-spell malaise.”

Please enjoy:

Trash Can took Taxicab's feet in his paws

Please enjoy:

and massaged them gently.

Please enjoy:

Taxicab dozed off,

Please enjoy:

and Trash Can dozed off next to him.

Please enjoy:

Hot Dog extricated himself from Fire Hydrant's embrace,

Please enjoy:

and crawled out of the den

Please enjoy:

into the gathering dusk

Please enjoy:

to find some food.
