“Jack’ll Do”, a poem

Speaker:

by Altivo Overo Jack’ll Do (Cow-horse Poetry)

Speaker:

Some folks there is doesn’t like a gray:

Speaker:

“He looks like dust!” is what they’ll say.

Speaker:

“Reminds me of a dark November day.” But

Speaker:

Jack sez, “Charlie’ll do.”

Speaker:

When calves’re bawlin’ and cows’re mad,

Speaker:

And we’ve got to work for pay to be had,

Speaker:

Cuz brandin’ time is always bad: Ol’

Speaker:

Jack sez, “Charlie’ll do.”

Speaker:

The sun’s not up

Speaker:

and it starts to rain.

Speaker:

The cookfire sputters, cold beans again.

Speaker:

Bad coffee, stale biskit,

Speaker:

aught else to gain, Still

Speaker:

Jack sez, “Charlie’ll do.”

Speaker:

We’ve worked together nigh twenty year,

Speaker:

But I know with Jack I’ve naught to fear.

Speaker:

He counts on me and I know he’s near. He

Speaker:

allus sez “Charlie’ll do.”

Speaker:

When Cookie bakes fresh biskit or cake

Speaker:

An’ all them boys their shares’ll take,

Speaker:

Jack brings me some where I stand at stake. Ol’

Speaker:

Jack sez, “Charlie’ll do.”

Speaker:

So when the last long drive is o’er,

Speaker:

Them cows’re sold, the pay is shore,

Speaker:

An’ I stand at the Eternal Pasture’s door, For

Speaker:

a rider I say,

Speaker:

“Jack’ll do.” This was
