19

:

20

:

Let's get started.

21

:

Welcome to episode 43.

22

:

I am really excited about this episode

because if you can nail this, then

23

:

it's a real game changer and it's all

about, success being an inside job

24

:

because it's really important that we

pay attention to our mindset, to the.

25

:

Beliefs and,, messages we give

ourselves that ultimately determine

26

:

the reality that we experience.

27

:

Working on your mindset, understanding

that success is an inside job, as well

28

:

as doing the things externally that

you need to do can help you to increase

29

:

your, not only your performance, but

also your wellbeing, your confidence,

30

:

and your daily experience of your job.

31

:

So let's get started.

32

:

Let's dive into the topic and

work through some of those.

33

:

Inner challenges that we all have.

34

:

Often when we're thinking about

success, and I should quantify

35

:

that is success on your terms.

36

:

So as you define success, it's

not necessarily about getting a

37

:

more senior role or promotion.

38

:

It might be other aspects of

success that you're thinking about.

39

:

We often think , we need to get more

experience, or I need to upskill, or

40

:

I need to get another qualification.

41

:

So the external pieces that

we think contribute towards us

42

:

being more successful at work.

43

:

And they, of course, are important, but

actually we need to also be thinking

44

:

about mindset, because our mindset has

a huge impact in terms of our performance,

45

:

how we work what our reality is.

46

:

And , mindset spans, not just

work, everything, but, work.

47

:

We spend.

48

:

Half our life at work, which

is a scary thought, isn't it?

49

:

92, 000 hours of our

life is spent working.

50

:

Work contributes to our identity

and how we see ourselves.

51

:

So we want to be having a

positive experience at work.

52

:

We want work to feel joyful, satisfying,

fulfilling, giving us all that great

53

:

stuff around direction and purpose.

54

:

And our mindset can contribute

hugely to our experience of work and

55

:

therefore our success at work too.

56

:

If you think about mindset, it will

definitely influence our productivity, our

57

:

courage, our confidence, how we present

ourselves, the language we use, the

58

:

conversations we have, how we respond to

challenges that we face, the opportunities

59

:

that we seize, that we say yes to, whether

we're, intimidated or whether we're bold.

60

:

Whether we lean in or whether we

hide away and not want to be visible.

61

:

That's all down to our mindset.

62

:

It really does impact everything we do.

63

:

Mindset tends to be habitual thinking

patterns, mindset is thoughts plus

64

:

beliefs plus actions equals outcome.

65

:

So those habitual patterns of thinking

that we have, those either limiting or

66

:

empowering beliefs that we add into

that mix, then the actions that we take

67

:

determine the outcome that we can expect.

68

:

And what we are thinking and believing

about ourselves will be projected

69

:

outwards, and will create the

reality which we then experience.

70

:

And often we think that it's fixed, that

we can't change those thinking patterns,

71

:

we might not even be aware of them, often

they're unconscious, they're just the

72

:

way we've always thought about things.

73

:

We just don't think

that's possible to change.

74

:

, I like to think about it as being

the director of your own movie.

75

:

Because in a way, you're, the stories that

you tell yourself about work, and about

76

:

your ability at work, your confidence

at work, your experience at work, it's

77

:

the story that we're telling ourselves.

78

:

. But , if you think about yourself as being

the director of that story, of that movie,

79

:

you know that you can edit it, you can

reshoot things, you can change the story.

80

:

It doesn't have to be

that particular ending.

81

:

You have the power to rewrite that story.

82

:

The first thing is to become aware of

the stories you're telling yourself

83

:

about work and about yourself at work.

84

:

Which could be very simple, , when

I think about going into work

85

:

tomorrow, what am I thinking?

86

:

Am I thinking, Oh , I really don't

want to be here, I'm dreading it.

87

:

It's a, a nightmare.

88

:

Am I thinking, Yeah, I

can't wait to get in there.

89

:

Is it somewhere in between?

90

:

Or are there particular aspects of your

job where you think about them, With a

91

:

negative mindset that you're conscious

that you don't want to do that piece

92

:

of work, or you find it dull, boring,

challenging, or whatever it might be.

93

:

Or it could be about particular people.

94

:

It could be about your boss, or a co

worker, or a member of the senior team

95

:

where you've got a negative story that

you're telling yourself about that person.

96

:

The first stage with anything

around our mindset is to increase

97

:

the awareness of what's going on.

98

:

To be really mindful of the stories

that are playing out for you.

99

:

That's the first thing, and

then think about Okay, how can

100

:

I rewrite some of those stories?

101

:

So the consciousness piece first,

the awareness piece first, and

102

:

then thinking about rewriting them.

103

:

I'm going to share a example to

illustrate how this can play out.

104

:

I was working with a client

recently who was really talented,

105

:

skilled, good at what she was doing.

106

:

Knew she wanted to get to

the next level in her career.

107

:

She was really clear about the type

of role she was heading towards.

108

:

And she, had all the skills,

qualifications, experience needed.

109

:

But for six months she was getting knock

back after knock back from interviews.

110

:

And when we unpacked it,

there was a lot going on.

111

:

Part of it was she was feeling that

she didn't deserve, you That success,

112

:

that she was going for it too early

in her career, that she wasn't

113

:

capable, so there's that playing out.

114

:

But she was also thinking about

how if she did get the job, how

115

:

it might impact her relationships,

what the dynamics might be in that

116

:

relationship, if she was more successful.

117

:

So she had all of that going on,

which was definitely playing into her

118

:

interview performance, how she was

feeling about potential interviews.

119

:

And she was creating unconsciously

a scenario where she was not

120

:

presenting her best self.

121

:

She was holding herself back because

often when we've got these narratives

122

:

playing, what we tend to do is self

So we'll put blocks in our own way.

123

:

We will Send out unconscious

messages about how enthusiastic we

124

:

are or how much we want that job

if it's an interview situation.

125

:

It's definitely worth thinking

about what is going on.

126

:

What is the story I'm telling myself

and what I might be doing is actually

127

:

self sabotaging and holding myself

back, because on one hand, you

128

:

want to move forward and you want

to create that success, enjoyment,

129

:

Whatever, within your career.

130

:

But the other part of you is holding

back from doing it because of whatever

131

:

might be going on in your head.

132

:

It feels like you've got one foot on

the accelerator and one foot on the

133

:

brake, and the result is that you're not

moving anywhere, that you can be stuck.

134

:

Paying attention to our mindset is so

important if we're feeling stuck, if we're

135

:

feeling we're holding ourselves back.

136

:

But also, even if we're feeling positive,

working on our mindset is a constant

137

:

thing in order to push ourselves forward.

138

:

First of all, notice what's going

on, then thinking about, okay, how

139

:

could I rewrite that narrative?

140

:

And you can do this in a few ways.

141

:

You could use curiosity,

learning and inspiration is

142

:

things to have in your head.

143

:

You could be thinking, okay, instead

of dreading this situation or working

144

:

with this person, how could I be more

curious about what's going on here?

145

:

What can I learn about this situation?

146

:

Either about me or about that other

person that I might be working with.

147

:

How can I get inspired by?

148

:

my own journey or by something that's

happening in that particular situation.

149

:

So , rather than resisting, because

you will find resistance, rather

150

:

than resisting these situations and

being negative about them, reframing

151

:

it into, okay, what could I learn?

152

:

What could I get curious about?

153

:

What could I feel inspired by?

154

:

Can just shift that perspective.

155

:

to one from , feeling negative about

that piece of work or working with

156

:

your boss, whatever it might be, your

co worker, going for that interview.

157

:

You can just start to explore

what could be going on.

158

:

And then you can reframe the situation.

159

:

With that particular client, we

did a lot of work around her belief

160

:

system and for her just realising

what was happening was a game changer.

161

:

She did manage to secure a great

role that was right for her.

162

:

, It's noticing what you're putting in your

own way, what's stopping you from having

163

:

the success that you really want to have.

164

:

Think about What am I putting my own way?

165

:

What's the narrative I'm telling myself?

166

:

How can I rewrite that narrative?

167

:

How can I, experiment,

explore what's happening?

168

:

How can I get curious?

169

:

How can I learn?

170

:

How can I find inspiration

in this situation?

171

:

If you are noticing you're feeling

negative about something, just experiment

172

:

with, okay, how could I turn this around?

173

:

How could I look at it from a

more positive point of view?

174

:

So that I'm sending out positive

messages about what's happening.

175

:

rather than getting stuck

in that negativity that I'm

176

:

feeling about this situation.

177

:

Now I'm mindful as well that some

situations, you do have to walk away

178

:

from if you can't change, so that's

always something to think about.

179

:

Some of that curiosity might be about

actually, I've outgrown this role, I've

180

:

outgrown this organisation, , I can't.

181

:

Change the toxic culture in the

organisation that I need to move.

182

:

There are times when this reflection

piece might lead to you making

183

:

some decisions around change.

184

:

But doing the work around your

mindset will enable you to

185

:

manage change more effectively.

186

:

Because , holding ourselves back in terms

of our mindset can be linked to fear.

187

:

Fear of change, fear of

success, fear of failure.

188

:

Love to know what your thoughts

are around the inner work.

189

:

It's a huge topic.

190

:

This is obviously, tip of

the iceberg sort of stuff.

191

:

But just thinking about what

you're doing in terms of holding

192

:

yourself back is incredibly useful.

193

:

I do a lot of work with people around

limiting beliefs and changing your

194

:

mindset into a more positive mindset.

195

:

So if this is something that

you feel like you'd like to work

196

:

with me on, just give me a shout.

197

:

Because sometimes you

can't do it all yourself.

198

:

Sometimes you need a deeper dive into it.
