questions that comes my way via email.

listeners yet But I do get messages
5
:frequently from my website's contact
form and this question comes up
6
:on Pretty much a frequent basis.
7
:So I thought I'd answer it right
here The question goes like this I
8
:have my CELPIP exam in a week or two.
9
:How can I increase my speaking score?
10
:I got a 6 last time.
11
:I need a 9.
12
:Now this question is a bit extreme,
but the basic theme is the same for
13
:many of the questions that come my way.
14
:My CELPIP exam is coming soon, I need
a higher score than what I already
15
:have, what can I do to get it?
16
:I've got good news and

:/
Well, hello there and welcome to the Speak English Fearlessly podcast.
22
:This is the podcast for motivated
English learners who want
23
:to speak English fearlessly.
24
:And learn practical tips and
strategies to conquer the CELPIP exam.
25
:I also love to feature encouraging
interviews with regular people.
26
:People just like you, who are working
towards becoming fluent in English, so we
27
:can learn from their experiences together.
28
:Who am I?
29
:My name is Aaron Nelson, and I've been
an English teacher for over 17 years,
30
:and I now help students prepare for
the CELPIP exam through online classes.
31
:So, I mentioned that there is good
news and bad news in the introduction.
32
:So, first, let's get that bad
news out of the way, and maybe you
33
:already know what I'm going to say.
34
:If your current score on the
CELPIP is low, like a 5 or a 6,
35
:that is telling you something
about your current English level.
36
:At a 5 or a 6, your level of English
is around an intermediate level.
37
:Now, if your goal is to achieve a score
of 9, which is a very common score that
38
:people need for their immigration process,
then your level of English needs to
39
:be a strong upper intermediate level.
40
:To put that in perspective with
time, according to a research study
41
:done by Cambridge University, and I
will have a link to that in my show
42
:notes, it takes a motivated adult.
43
:Approximately 180 hours, up to 260 hours
of study to move from a lower intermediate
44
:to an upper intermediate level of English.
45
:I'm going to repeat that again
because it's really important.
46
:It takes a motivated adult approximately
Between 180 hours and 260 hours of study
47
:to move from a lower intermediate to
an upper intermediate level of English.
48
:That's a long time, isn't it?
49
:Consider this.
50
:If your average focus contact time in
English, where you're actively working
51
:on learning it, is just three hours a
week, meaning you're taking two one and
52
:a half hour classes each week and that's
all of your English contact where you're
53
:focused on trying to learn the language,
then it's going to take you, get ready for
54
:this, 86 weeks or about a year and a half.
55
:to move up from a lower intermediate
to an upper intermediate, or for you
56
:to go from that 6 on the CELPIP score
up to maybe a 9, a year and a half.
57
:So yeah, like I said before,
that's a long time, isn't it?
58
:Now results for sure will vary
for each person, But you should
59
:take this pretty seriously.
60
:That same study that I mentioned also
points out that the higher you go with
61
:your language skills, The longer it
takes to break into the next level.
62
:But something cool begins to happen.
63
:The more your skills develop, The less
guided help you need and the more you need
64
:to take advantage of the English happening
all around you like through movies or TV
65
:or the radio or conversations going on all
around you in English every single day.
66
:Being able to take advantage of
that on a more regular basis helps
67
:to multiply what you are learning.
68
:if you're taking advantage of it.
69
:So what does that all mean
for your question today?
70
:If that's the question that you've
been asking, can I go from a six to a
71
:nine in a really short period of time?
72
:Is it possible to go from a six
to a nine in just a few weeks?
73
:Well, the answer is, it
depends, but likely no.
74
:The it depends part means you need
to already have a strong upper
75
:intermediate level of English in order
to achieve a 9 or more on the exam.
76
:You can't just magically pull your score
up by studying for the CELPIP exam harder.
77
:Remember.
78
:The CELPIP measures your
current level of English.
79
:If you want your score to go higher,
you need to focus on building your
80
:fluency skills in general, which for
most people, takes quite a long time.
81
:As I just mentioned, it can
take over a year to move from
82
:one level up to another one.
83
:So, if your score was low, but you know
you already have an upper intermediate
84
:level of English, then maybe you just
had a bad day when you wrote the exam.
85
:That happens to all of us.
86
:Taking some time to practice
for the exam will for sure help
87
:you be ready for the next one.
88
:And if you focus, you might be able to be
ready for another attempt in a few weeks.
89
:But like I said, only if your current
level of English is strong enough already
90
:can you expect to move from a 6 to a
9 in just that short space of time.
91
:But what can you do if your English
level isn't a strong upper intermediate
92
:and you are down, you know, maybe,
maybe you are at a lower intermediate
93
:or at a beginner level of English.
94
:For most people who asked me this
question This is the situation that
95
:they find themselves in their language
level isn't strong enough yet You want
96
:a higher score, and you need a higher
score, but you're still at a lower
97
:level of English than what you need
to be in order to achieve the results
98
:that you need on the CELPIP exam.
99
:So what can you do?
100
:Number one, focus on making
English a part of your day to-day
101
:as much as you possibly can.
102
:English should not be
something that you isolate.
103
:It should be something that you are doing
day in and day out as much as you can.
104
:The second thing that you need to
be doing is building relationships
105
:with native English speakers.
106
:Don't isolate from them.
107
:I know it can be scary, I know it can
be intimidating to be trying to use
108
:the limited English you might have with
someone who is a fluent native speaker.
109
:But those kinds of interactions are what
will help you to build your skills..
110
:It will help you to build your confidence,
it will help you to be learning new
111
:vocabulary, and it will give you
that vital practice that you need.
112
:In short, if I were to summarize
those two points, you need to increase
113
:your regular contact with English.
114
:Both in consuming it and producing it.
115
:Regular, consistent contact with
English where you are consuming
116
:it and producing it in meaningful
ways is the most important daily
117
:thing that you can be doing.
118
:And by consuming it, I mean
listening to it, reading it,
119
:listening to it, and reading it.
120
:And it can be doing things that you enjoy.
121
:You don't need to be increasing your
contact with English in a painful way.
122
:It doesn't have to be, you know,
like sitting in a classroom
123
:for nine hours during the day.
124
:on a day by day basis in order for
your English level to begin improving.
125
:No, you can be doing things that you
actually enjoy doing, like listening
126
:to your favorite songs in English,
to listening to radio programs in
127
:English, to be listening to TV shows.
128
:Uh, and movies, and engaging in
conversations with friends, all of
129
:those things, if you're doing it
in English, are helpful for you.
130
:If you're reading, for example, if you
like to read, if reading is your thing,
131
:are you reading an English book right now?
132
:Are you working on a novel?
133
:Or, uh, a nonfiction book.
134
:Do you have something that you
are reading on a daily basis that
135
:will help you to be building your
vocabulary and increasing your
136
:contact time with English and writing?
137
:I mean, that's on the
producing side of it, isn't it?
138
:We need to be.
139
:Actively using the language that we
have, be it a little bit or a lot of
140
:English, like our current level, even
if it's just a little bit, we should
141
:be trying to use what we have either
in writing emails or, or speaking with
142
:somebody that's on the producing side.
143
:of English.
144
:The consuming it is reading
it and listening to it.
145
:Producing it is speaking and writing it.
146
:You need to be doing all of those things
consistently on a day to day basis.
147
:The worst thing that you can be doing
is waiting for English to happen to you.
148
:Waiting for English class, for example,
to be your only space where you practice.
149
:And then everything else that
you do in the rest of the week
150
:is in your first language.
151
:That is a terrible thing
for you to be doing.
152
:Or, how about this one?
153
:Surrounding yourself with people
who only speak your first language.
154
:Oh man.
155
:Both of those practices are common.
156
:I know people who do this.
157
:But those two things, those two
things totally work against you.
158
:So don't do it.
159
:If you don't care about seeing your
English skills grow, then go ahead
160
:and just wait for your English
class to practice your English.
161
:And go ahead and surround yourself
with people who you can speak with
162
:easily in your first language.
163
:That is the best way to practice.
164
:That you can slow your
English development down.
165
:But if you're serious about
building your skills, then you
166
:need to do the opposite of that.
167
:You need to be increasing your contact
time with English as much as you can.
168
:Don't be waiting for the,
for those English classes to
169
:be practicing your English.
170
:You can be using English day
in and day out, especially if
171
:you already live in Canada.
172
:English is happening all around you.
173
:And I know it's scary.
174
:I know it's scary.
175
:I'm not trying to, to gloss over the
fact that using your English when
176
:it's not your first language is a
intimidating and scary thing to do.
177
:But my friend, My friend,
you need to do it.
178
:You need to push yourself to do it
each day, because the more you do, you
179
:will see that your skills will improve.
180
:It won't be like a light switch
where it just suddenly rockets up.
181
:But little by little, if you make
those little 1 percent improvements
182
:day in and day out, you're going
to see those skills improve.
183
:That is what you can be doing to improve
your speaking skills, to be improving
184
:your language skills so that you can go
from a six to a nine on the CELPIP exam.
185
:But like I said before, if you want
Your current level of English is really
186
:low if you're currently at a lower
intermediate level of English, for
187
:example, and that's not really low.
188
:You've been working on your
English for a while, if that is
189
:your current level of English, and
congratulations on achieving that level.
190
:But if your goal is to achieve that
nine on the CELPIP exam, and you
191
:are currently at a six, if that is
your current level of English, a
192
:lower intermediate level of English,
then you need to prepare yourself.
193
:to not be able to get that nine in
just a couple of weeks of study.
194
:It's just not going to happen.
195
:You need to be investing in developing
your English skills for, well, quite
196
:a while, probably close to a year.
197
:And I'm not saying that to discourage you.
198
:I'm not saying that to destroy your hopes.
199
:I'm telling you that because I want
you to have an honest, and realistic
200
:expectation of what you can accomplish.
201
:But honestly, if you devote hard
focus practice over the next year,
202
:you will be able to achieve that nine.
203
:So don't give up, you can do this.
204
:I hope that this helps you.
205
:I hope that this answers that question.
206
:If this is a question that you've
been wondering about and I just
207
:want to say thank you for listening.
208
:If you've been listening all the way
through today's episode and I will
209
:see you again next Tuesday for the
Speak English Fearlessly podcast.
210
:Have a great week.
211
:Bye bye.
