The struggle is that his G-Dly soul as well as his animal soul wants to have exclusive rights to his intellect & emotions, however as long as he puts forth the effort G-D will help him in the battle. To avoid failure by success is to constantly bear in mind that he has not transformed his animal soul & to consider himself "like a Rasha wicked person" The tools to succeed is to constantly & consistently Study Torah & Pray that will keep his G-Dly soul In charge of his life. Even though the "Beinoni" has not transformed himself this is still considered a real & honest service as he is doing the best that he can with the tools that he possesses.
