Dealing with difficult people #preaching
Imagine you're navigating your way through a dense, thorny thicket. Each step is a struggle. The thorns pull at your clothing, scratch your skin, and make progress incredibly difficult. Now consider this, aren't difficult people much like these thorny bushes? They challenge us, irritate us, and impede our progress. But just as there are ways to navigate through the thicket, there are also ways to deal with difficult people.
Our guiding scripture today is Proverbs 15:1, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." This verse offers profound wisdom for handling those prickly individuals we encounter in our lives.
One of the most difficult individuals in the Bible was Saul of Tarsus. He persecuted Christians, creating havoc and fear in the early Christian community. Yet, he was not beyond the reach of God's transforming power. After a dramatic encounter with Jesus, Saul became Paul, one of the most passionate and influential apostles in Christian history.
The story of Saul turned Paul offers us two important lessons. First, nobody is beyond the transformative power of God's love. The most difficult person you know could become a great instrument of God's grace.
Second, dealing with difficult people requires patience, love, and prayer. In 1 Corinthians 13:7, Paul himself wrote, "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Love, Paul tells us, can endure even the most difficult people.
Another powerful example is Jesus and His interaction with Judas Iscariot. Despite knowing Judas would betray Him, Jesus treated Judas with love and respect, offering him the same care He extended to His other disciples. This is an example of ultimate patience and unyielding love in the face of difficulty.
In dealing with difficult people, it's important to remember Romans 12:18, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Our responsibility is to respond with love and gentleness, as our initial scripture advises, and to strive for peace.
Let's pray together now:
"Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that dealing with difficult people can be challenging and exhausting. We ask for Your wisdom in navigating these relationships. Let Your love flow through us, even in trying situations. Help us to remember that with You, transformation is possible, and that the most difficult individuals can become vessels of Your grace. Empower us to respond with gentleness and peace. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."
Now, may the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. Go with the knowledge that even in the thickest thorns, God can lead a path. Amen.
