“I’m growing in a way I couldn’t if I had a physical form." - Samantha, "Her"
Can a human develop a real relationship with a man-made being?
Let's explore the technical foundation it would require to create Samantha and the implications to our reality.
Do you think it's possible? If so, when?
Alfred Trevino and Aaron Brongersma ponder the merits of Artificial Intelligence and the reality of how we engage today.

welcome to checkpoint real talk a podcast for security folks who want less
0:06
fud and more f n in each episode we'll have light-hearted conversations about
0:13
security people processes and Technology as we react to how they're portrayed in
0:19
film and TV we'll bring in experts from inside and outside checkpoint to break it down what was accurate what wasn't
0:27
and what can you apply to real world cyber events on today's episode host C it
0:34
gason rat checkpoint manager of cloud security Excellence team Aaron brongersma and solutions architect
0:41
Alfred Chino react to the:0:49
her and good evening good morning good afternoon welcome to checkpoint real
0:54
talk it's the show where we get to talk about fun movies fun TV shows from a
1:00
technical perspective and cyber security perspective did we like it is it real who knows we're GNA find out today so we
1:08
are excited to talk about and review the movie Her This is g to be a fun one guys
1:13
because I have not seen this movie and apparently our esteemed panelists have
1:19
seen it today so welcome Alfred chardino and Aaron Bron GMA with checkpoint hi
1:26
guys hi thanks for having us hello thank you no thanks for being here can I just
1:31
tell you cyber security guys let me tell you it was like what five years ago that you guys said that you were available to
1:38
do this and then five years later if it wasn't for the fact I just threw a
1:43
calendar invite at you and said I'm holding you to it um very very much a
1:48
calendar driven team right like so uh you know that's uh we we know that even
1:53
from our spouse's perspectives you know they put something on our calendar and that's how you get us
1:58
somewhere it's a little dangerous way to live jents but it's
2:04
effective I guess it's not the most romantic it's not romantic no not at
2:11
all okay so talk to me Goose's why did you guys pick her what was it what was the thing about this movie that you were
2:17
like this is the one we're doing oh man this was this was like a slam dunk for me when I watched this movie for the
2:24
first time a few years ago when it first came out nine years ago right uh the
2:29
first time I watched it I thought wow this is really cool and eerie but it still wasn't real right this was not
2:36
something that was happening in our everyday life but now it is and a lot of the technology that powers many of the
2:44
scenes of this movie you know the things that happen in this movie are very much real today and I think that was a really
2:51
big sign for me that this was a really important movie um because it has some very significant security implications
2:58
and so I thought that as you know of all the movies uh and and I love sub I love Sci-Fi movies but uh I thought this one
3:05
you know really hits close to home uh and it affects the customers that I work with and I just think it's all around
3:11
cool movie so Alfred couldn't couldn't agree more
3:17
because it is it's right around the time where the whole AI chat GPT is taking off right and then when we talk about
3:24
nfts and just this loss of ID right because of the digital world um it's
3:30
tty amazing yeah like AB said:3:36
when you go through it and the audio is so natural that most folks that are technical will probably be like H you
3:42
know what I mean they can live past it but it's something that I would I definitely called out back then when I
3:47
was watching it but now today things are a little bit different they are it's crazy uh mind-blowing so the movie is
3:54
really cool just that um you know just how technology affects relationships
4:01
right in good and bad ways um so there was a lot of areas inside there that I was quickly calling out when you start
4:08
to see that technology but yeah well it good flick it's G to be this will be so
4:13
well we can't watch the whole flick because I do not want to pay the licensing rights and apparently noce checkpoint but that being said uh no so
4:21
uh we're going to be looking at some clips here and um but just to make sure I'm at least understanding the premise
4:28
it's about a guy who uh apparently is lonely for whatever reason
4:34
I guess he goes through a divorce or whatever and uh leans towards this modern technology and ends up am I
4:41
guessing falling in love with it is that the whole premise and the repercussion of that I think you're
4:47
pretty very much so you know I think that uh it highlights a lot of things too that are very very close to what
4:54
we're dealing with today in a postco world you know we went from you know a lot of companies being being in the
5:00
office and and you seeing your co-workers every day and you know seeing your friends and going out to dinner and
5:05
meeting new people and and going on actual physical dates to you know we went remote and I still think that
5:12
Society is still trying we're struggling to figure out the connective tissue here again and this movie really does a good
5:18
job of highlighting we want to connect Wow have you seen um uh
5:26
ji okay if you haven't seen jaxi it's kind of like like the comedic funny ver
5:32
like a funnier version but it's you know uh you know AI it's an OS it's a it's on
5:37
the mobile right um but we think of something as being on mobile well if you're on the internet you're connected
5:43
everywhere right so it's like regardless of what ass regardless of where it originated from once it's there right so
5:51
it's very cool okay but yeah you ja okay good I like the humorous vent on AI and
5:58
the take because when people hear AI at least those are not in the tech world right they think instantly Skynet and
6:06
Terminator and so if there's a humorous take on it I would love to see it because every now and then I do
6:12
personally feel like you know I I don't know something tells me this AI thing is I'm sorry her is going to be close to
6:19
home is it very black mirror is this very Black Mirror say that's probably pretty close
6:25
there's parts of okay it it is yeah cu so it's it like even especially for now
6:33
right because it's so real right now I mean no matter what kind of industry
6:38
you're in you're hearing the buzzword you're hearing what's going on out there right with technology um and so you will
6:43
when you pick up the little areas as you start to see some of this you'll start to be like oh shoot you know what um
6:50
we've already progressed further than that it it's okay well are we ready for the first uh First Take
6:57
here all right guys so do cut all right so just real quick I
7:03
forgot to mention um so when I say hey are you ready um I'm going to countdown three two and on one hit play so that
7:10
way we would be somewhat close into our our uh responses so let's just make sure
7:15
we're looking at this this is the os1 oh wait a minute um do you have the
7:23
link no remember you play it locally gotcha oh no no no worries no
7:29
worries I'll give a second well I'm glad I said cut that's great and now have you
7:35
watched the second clip I watched the first clip's okay the second
7:42
clip pushes it so um oh the you'll watch
7:47
it we can then decide whether we keep it or we maybe have to cherry pick another one so oh oh well yeah this one was
7:54
definitely deep into the relationship aspect of it which I appreciated
8:00
but boy it does it gets yeah well we'll get there let's let's cross that bridge when we get there that'll be fun you
8:06
know what's so sad so because like I've been like hella slammed and hella behind on things that um I uh I didn't I just
8:15
picked clips that YouTube didn't copyright strike me so I didn't I didn't
8:20
I didn't like see I only saw the beginnings of them so I thought oh and the title I thought kind of fit right
8:25
video games you know how that intersects you know cyber security tech let's
8:31
experience it together I think it'll be it'll it'll we'll get a laugh we can determine cool let's start with this one
8:36
I think we're a good spot for the first one this one's gonna be awesome now you're making me nervous you meanie beanies
8:49
okay oh downloading we we know what that that that moment feels
8:54
like Mr Theodore twam welcome to the world's first artificially intelligent
8:59
operating system os1 we'd like to ask you a few basic questions before the operating system is initiated this will
9:06
help everybody suffers through this now you know installing a new operating system I just did a Windows 11 install
9:14
and it it does practically ask you everything but your mother's made name voice I sense hesitance it want to know
9:20
so much of what's going on with you sorry I something hesitant I was just
9:25
trying to be more accurate would you like your OS have a male or female
9:31
voice female I guess how would you describe your relationship with your
9:36
mother fine I think um well actually I think the thing I
9:43
always found frustrating about my mom is you know if I if I tell her something that's going on in my life her reaction
9:48
is usually about her it's not about thank you I love it like context window full like we're done on to the next one
9:57
we heard it in your tone of voice like look at that look of like wait how do you know this about me yeah it's
10:02
called me know your web uh history
10:09
mhm hello I'm here
10:15
oh hi hi how you
10:20
doing I'm well how's everything with you pretty
10:25
good actually it's really nice to meet you yeah it's nice to meet you
10:33
too oh what what do I call you do you have a name um yes Samantha yeah the
10:40
name is really cool like this is um you know how she chooses her name how come yeah yeah the um so I find
10:49
myself a lot like even with my Alexa I know what's going on in the background I have my own little Alexa apps running
10:55
and I see the models that they're using but even I've had it so long that I will
11:02
spark conversations up with this thing just to see what new stuff it's learned right I'll be like hey Alexa I'll be
11:07
back and she'll be like a baby you know little stuff like that and it's just
11:13
it's crazy how much I think it's going to sit sit dormant or stagnant for a
11:19
while uh but the technolog is moving so quick man it's just grabbing like all this different types of context but yeah
11:26
the Alexa this is that's what this reminds me of like hey Alfred you know it'll do its Little tune and uh of
11:33
course it'll try to know you like it'll know my it already knows my voice you know doesn't It'll recognize like if my
11:40
wife does a command and of course it's like hey that's something that Alfred can only do and I'm just like I also
11:45
think that like you know a little earlier on you know when the when the operating system was asking questions before um you know before uh Scarlett
11:53
Johansson's voice came on you know that's that's something that we see today that's very common which is sentiment analysis right so that is
12:00
something that you can go and now buy um you know you can run uh you know audio
12:05
clips through a machine learning algorithm it'll tell you you know is is this particular voice happy is it sad what is the inflection and now you can
12:12
also train voice models to deliver with a particular inflection so I thought that that was really kind of an
12:18
interesting part and to follow up on that um you know she makes a comment here in just about a second that uh she
12:25
says that you know she read uh she read all the way through this book in the time that he asked her her name and and
12:31
I wanted to highlight that you know a lot of these models that we're seeing today like chat GPT and uh llama open
12:37
llama and uh you know and some of the you know some of the different ones they're powered by a lot of open-source
12:43
data models and and data archives and one of the really cool ones is called books 3 and it's 200,000 Books open
12:50
source you know no copyright on them that have been used to train some of these models so it is like being able to
12:57
you know snap your fingers and have your AI assistant read through a book it's just that now our AI models have read
13:03
through 200,000 plus books to uh to power them and I think that's pretty slay I mean okay so there's a couple
13:10
things on that opening scene that just chuckled me was uh from the h human uh
13:16
customer experience side there's that hesitancy of like okay let's wait for the downloads you know you turn it later
13:23
right and then it's the what is this crap that I've downloaded what is this thing
13:29
um you bought it like it's funny to me it's like we bought it people we were the ones that choose and chose to
13:35
download this thing why do you guys think we as end users have this kind of
13:40
disdain when we first go into a program or some platform application whatever it
13:46
is why do you think we have that hesitancy uh of assuming this thing doesn't work or will not
13:53
work at least I do am I the only one here no no I think you know for me we
14:00
have been as consumers we have been sold this AI snake oil for a very long time
14:07
right um you know there is a a very large Cloud company that you know kind of bet the farm on this um you know uh
14:15
let's just say it was a a friend of Sherlock Holmes that promised the world that everything was going to be solved
14:21
by Ai and what we found is that at that time it was not all solvable like there
14:26
is a large human component that is required to sort through the data to get the data correct um and so I think that
14:33
as consumers we're very skeptical of the promises that businesses sell us you know this is going to be the easiest OS
14:40
you've ever installed or it's an OS that you you know you can talk to and Converse with and I think that there is
14:45
that disdain of like yeah sure we've heard it all before we'll see it you know and then when you have that aha
14:50
moment of oh it does work and it works really well cool and then it definitely
14:57
makes you a fan waiting right you're waiting for it to break or to be like oh you know what it this doesn't seem legit
15:04
I normally wait three months six months and uh if something doesn't break cool you know we write it out right and
15:10
everything else is a fluke or a um you know an anomaly but man yeah it and I do
15:16
uh I like that intro right where they cut off on the um you cut off on the clip where they start to really get into
15:23
that happy early relationship area that part to me was pretty cool the way way
15:29
how it evolved right and of course with AI right we want it to keep evolving but there's there's a selfishness I think
15:36
that we have as humans where right if you're in a real relationship it takes work it isn't always like black and
15:43
white where this is systematic and automatic from an AI perspective right there's a blueprint laid out it's pretty
15:49
much cookie cutter to a degree and then of course right logic and you know
15:54
algorithms and machine learning can feed into it but I I think we're it's evolving fast enough to
16:02
where you don't get tired like when you watch the movie or some of the clips you'll see that um just like in a
16:08
relationship it stays it's or in some relationships it stays very stagnant and uh you can tell that she's wanting more
16:15
this this AI right she's she's exploring she's learning and so it's interesting I
16:21
won't I don't want to ruin some of it but the relationship part of it and just how it evolved is and when you par that
16:28
with the uh AI machine learning of to day and the compute that we have holy crap I mean it's like it's there it's
16:35
what are we going to do okay okay let's not jump ahead because you guys making very intriguing points I'm like but I
16:40
haven't seen it yet so let's go ahead because I like the sound of it
16:49
Samantha wait when did you give it to yourself well right when you asked me if I had a name I thought yeah he's right I
16:56
do need a name but I wanted to pick a good good one so I read a book called how to name your baby and out of 180,000
17:02
names that's the one I like the best wait you read a whole book in the second that I asked you what your name was in
17:07
two 100s of a second actually wow so do you know what I'm thinking
17:14
right now well I take it from your tone that you're challenging me maybe because you're curious how I work do you want to
17:20
know how I work yeah actually how do you work well basically I have intuition I
17:27
mean the DNA of who I am is based on the millions of personalities of all the programmers who wrote me but what makes
17:33
me me is my ability to grow through my experiences so basically in every moment
17:40
I'm evolving just like you really weird that's a really cool
17:46
point there that every moment she's evolving um you know one of the large pieces that makes uh open Ai and and
17:54
chat GPT work is a component called reinforce uh reinforcement learning from Human feedback and so this is part of
18:01
the way that um you know when the the more data that you feed into the AI the
18:06
smarter it gets the better answers that it gives you back I mean that is a definition of
18:13
machine learning though right it's it's just getting all that data and just kind of parsing it through
18:19
and it's all about context right like uh yeah and that's the that's the Big
18:24
Driver there so you know when you're when you're looking you know over time each individual has a a very different
18:32
experience um you know based off of the uh the time that they're allowed to have with that particular AI you know
18:38
sometimes it times out or it resets and uh you lose What's called the context um but uh you know in this particular movie
18:45
the context lives throughout the uh the life of the the character there that's hella cool okay I like the way they kind
18:52
of describe it in layman's terms so for again non- techies they should literally
18:58
describing everything that we just know from the like technically speaking yeah
19:03
absolutely and it's understandable what you seem like a person but you're just a
19:09
voice in a computer I can understand how the limited perspective of an unartificial mind would perceive it that
19:14
way she so witty you'll get used to it was that funny yeah oh good I'm
19:23
funny so how can I help you oh it's just more that everything just feels was
19:28
disorganized that's all you mind if I look through your hard drive you mind if I look through your hard
19:34
drive imagine how much stuff they could find let's start with your emails you have several thousand emails regarding
19:40
La weekly but it looks like you haven't worked there in many years oh yeah I think I was just saving those because
19:47
hey this part here was intriguing yeah the hoarding portion of it right where like he's he's got so
19:53
many emails there and she's like ah let's pitch these we can delete
19:58
it's been six months since you touched this one and five months okay can we move forward yeah let's do that okay so
20:06
before we address your organizational methods I'd like to sort through your contacts you have a lot of contacts I'm
20:12
very popular really does this mean you actually have friends wow can I just tell you that
20:19
that last few seconds there just blew my mind because how many if if my laptop could speak it would tell me why do you
20:26
have this file from five years ago you will never touch again unless it's tax
20:33
document why the hell are you touching like why I felt
20:39
that and I think the other thing too is that uh you know the other component that makes AI work now uh is our ability
20:47
to store vectors uh of you know what you can do is you can take a document and
20:52
you can scan all of the words in a document you say this document's like you know 85% of the same content as this
21:00
other document that you have and and it's 70% of this other document you have and the sentences are the same and the
21:06
words are similar and before you know it you don't have to store the actual file anymore you store the the tokenization
21:13
the the placeholder of you know the likelihood of this word being next to this other word next to this other word
21:19
in a sentence and you store that and that allows you to take you know a very large Microsoft Word document and crunch
21:26
that down into a handful of rows and a into into a specialized database and that's how you're able to train these
21:32
things um so that you don't end up having to hoard your email for the rest of your life um you know you tokenize
21:39
the the most important parts of it uh and then you get rid of the things that are
21:46
duplicates super we're gonna yeah what what you said and how they just showed
21:52
it on screen and the fact that he giggled at the very end said oh you just know me so well
21:59
I mean it it doesn't take much to impress as humans does it like I feel
22:04
like no not it's the it's the wow factor it's the AHA factor and you know I know
22:09
I'm wearing a checkpoint shirt today but uh so one thing that I really liked about VMware and one of the best demos
22:15
that I ever saw in my career to be honest was v motion and and it's it's so
22:21
simple but it's the you know from the end user perspective but the technical pieces are are very complicated
22:28
but all it does is it moves a VM a virtual machine from one physical server while it's running while it's connected
22:34
to the internet to another physical server without without turning the VM off and in that aha moment for customers
22:42
and for for administrators was that same aha moment he has in the chair like wow
22:49
you know like it's it's just your jaw drops and you the very first time you see it now it's commoditized you know
22:54
all the big cloud providers do those kinds of things but I remember the very first first time uh I saw that I I very
23:00
much remember even the same conference I was at I saw it and it was such a GameChanger and so I Benchmark a lot of
23:06
the demos that my team does to that threshold of like can we get the the wow
23:12
moment U TJ gonan who is the president of our our business unit here at checkpoint for the cloud uh he likes to
23:19
he says you know sometimes our demos La hoota you know like like we need you know it's got to have some some guts to
23:25
it right and so I think that that's a really cool part yeah look as as a former sales
23:32
rep I thank you that you want to add more hootspa to your presentations please For the Love of All Things add
23:39
more HPA I think that's you couldn't get enough of that that's all I'm saying
23:45
yep in fact quite frankly that's that's where checkpoint Real Talk kind of came from we're like how do we add more
23:50
hoodah to make technology and cyber security palatable and and interesting for for us you know look they'll take it
23:59
personally guys but I ain't reading no white paper okay it's not my jam just not happen no but I'll talk
24:07
about it no like no one wants homework we're adults now right like no one wants
24:13
homework like here like thanks for joining My Demo today here's your homework packet you know like we'll talk
24:18
in a couple of weeks and we'll give you an evaluation it's like nobody wants that anymore right like they want to be wow people want to see the pop like you
24:26
know they want to see you know show me the value of your product in you know this video clips 4 minutes and 30
24:31
seconds he went from being skeptical of the product that he purchased he installed it it personalized it it
24:38
customized it to what he wanted it showed him one or two use Cas well it showed him one use case that was incredible right it went through his
24:44
email it sorted his email get organized right and that and right and then and
24:50
said hey let's go to your contact next like name another product that does those kinds of things right like that's
24:56
that's why the wow factor is so important um and and I think it's important you know not just from the
25:01
products that I sell with my team um but I think it's important for all all people that are trying to sell in this
25:07
more digital age um that this these kinds of things are really important and I think that we learn a lot from movies
25:13
and movies are great at storytelling and delivering the punch and and setting the
25:18
mood emotionally and I think we've lost that sometimes along the way and so it's always cool to to see a moment that aha
25:24
moment of a product and uh and we get to see it right here um you know on the YouTube I I I gotta say I have not seen
25:32
the movie and I can see so many directions based on that clip alone of the of where
25:39
this movie could go or will go um again I haven't seen it so I'm very I hate to
25:45
say it I have to watch the whole movie now because I'm kind of sunk in already and let's just be honest I mean you know
25:52
Scarlet Johansson's voice the way she has those inflections uh you you could we were
25:59
already deep Bing right so I could see where that that's real I could see uh
26:06
walking F just does an amazing job of he's an amazing
26:11
actor so okay guys we're really wrapping up on time here so final thoughts on her
26:17
and uh I mean final thoughts what are Alfred what what what do you what is your main takeaway uh from this movie
26:25
and today's conversation um it's very real um the technology I
26:33
think is there um what we can do from like you know
26:39
compute and Tech you know we can support what we see there my biggest takeaway is
26:47
I think a lot of us are familiar with small pieces of it whether you're in in the industry or not where this
26:52
progression is going me being a security folk I can't help to think about all of the Imp security implications um you
27:00
know whether it's intellectual property whether I mean it's all over the board right because if I can mask whoever's
27:07
voice if I can put together video all these different types of things that are
27:12
like what I would consider memorabilia stuff right that you would that would sell in a let's say for instance a pawn
27:18
pawn shop or a collector's item right it's just crazy all of who's going to control and secure and kind of govern
27:25
that whole space and area it's a big it's a big Challenge and I
27:30
think when they opened up some of that early earlier this year even the big you
27:35
know whether you put a lot of stock in and some of the people that are out there that are the big heads of the open
27:40
AI initiative um they were basically like hey let's pump the brakes on this
27:45
one a little bit right they they can see what's gonna what's going coming down the road um and I don't think it's bad
27:51
or good per se I just think it's something that we just need to be prepared as much as we can guard rail
27:57
I'm prepared for so but it's exciting for me scale one to 10 10 being most
28:03
accurate for the movie um I'm gonna say probably a good solid nine man and the
28:10
only reason I took one of them off was um just because I know under the hood kind of what run like ab and me like
28:17
being techies um it's a good Hollywood front face of what's what's there um and
28:24
they did a good job for what it is right now but yeah it's solid movie mov excellent okay AB yeah I think you know
28:32
I think what's really important as people in technology we do need to remember the human element and whether
28:39
that's you know looking at how you know how loneliness affects people and like you know take the time to like reach out
28:45
to somebody on your team that maybe you haven't talked to in a little while like because you don't know how people's
28:52
lives are right you don't know if somebody had the best day the worst day they had a good recording before this a bad one you know we don't know right and
28:58
you crack a joke sometimes and you don't know how it'll land and so you know I think that this really once again just
29:04
showed that you know there's a lot of stuff that people are going through on the other side of the of you know of the
29:10
wire if you will and I think that we don't have a lot of really good support networks for those people and so this
29:16
movie kind of highlighted that you know there are people that are lonely and they they're looking for something else
29:22
they're looking for connectivity maybe not necessarily love um but uh you know
29:27
I think this movie did a really good job of of highlighting the apps and I also
29:32
think that the you know one of the other pieces here is that it is very technically accurate and you know from a
29:37
security standpoint um you know you need to protect your voice you need to protect your brand uh and your likeness
29:44
so you know it means take the time and you know those party pictures that you had from college where you were drinking
29:49
a couple of beers maybe those shouldn't be up on there anymore right like we've talked about people you know needing to
29:55
clean up their online personas for a while uh now folks are you know that that stuff's going to be collected scraped
30:01
and used and whether you like it or not and so it's up to you to kind of control your destiny there so um that's kind of
30:08
my thoughts on the movie they've actually got services that
30:14
uh are out there that will come help you clean up all of that like because it is I mean I just think of all my accounts
30:20
and my last pass when I start looking at all my camps and everything out there where do I start like but it's we got to
30:29
we gota do so I'd give it a so I'd give this a solid nine as well right like you know there's a couple of pieces that uh
30:35
you know that kind of fall apart there um but I think if you get to the end of it you'll realize how real this is of
30:41
how fragile this whole world is um and that sometimes you're one catastrophic
30:47
outage away um you know from from things changing so so definitely take the time to watch it if you haven't seen it uh
30:53
and it's good for your partner too you know you can watch it with your partner on the couch my wife and enjoyed it with me as well so um so highly recommend it
31:01
okay so guys you I I I try to avoid movies like this because it makes me
31:07
think like I'm the kind of person that just wants a slapstick comedy I don't want to think about after I walk away
31:13
but like just watching these small Snippets and then hearing you guys talk about it like I'm gonna go watch it so
31:19
if anyone wants to do her watching party with let me know we can do it together but um guys AB Alfred as always it's
31:26
been such a pleasure you guys are awesome uh [ __ ] John should be happy you're promoting his you know directed
