Speaker:
00:00:00
Welcome to this week's Saddle up segment on Tuesday on
2
:
00:00:05
doing divorce different, I had
the pleasure of chatting with Dr.
3
:
00:00:10
Becky Wetstone and she
is been through it all.
4
:
00:00:14
She's been here before and I
just, I like talking to her so
5
:
00:00:17
much and getting her insight.
6
:
00:00:19
Um, I think she's gonna
kind of be a regular.
7
:
00:00:21
On the Doing Divorce, different podcast.
8
:
00:00:24
She, when I say she's been through
it all, she's been through divorce.
9
:
00:00:27
She had kids, she's been remarried and
she is a marriage and family therapist and
10
:
00:00:33
she always has lots of good information.
11
:
00:00:36
And this week on doing
divorce different I.
12
:
00:00:38
Kind of threw at her something to talk
about right before we met, which is fine.
13
:
00:00:43
I like to be authentic.
14
:
00:00:45
I was telling her that I had been to
a shower in Montana over the weekend
15
:
00:00:49
and that a lot of the young girls
were really interested in, okay, what
16
:
00:00:54
can we do to have strong marriages?
17
:
00:00:56
And so I was thinking.
18
:
00:00:58
What can we talk about?
19
:
00:01:00
What can we discuss to help you
have a strong marriage, whether
20
:
00:01:04
you're young and just getting
married or even after divorce?
21
:
00:01:08
What are the things that
are important to do?
22
:
00:01:11
And interestingly enough, it very simply,
I mean, if you just listen to this,
23
:
00:01:18
you're gonna get the biggest nugget of
all, and that is to work on yourself.
24
:
00:01:22
And in that episode, we give some
ways you can work on yourself.
25
:
00:01:28
One thing that she said was really
important that I agree with is really
26
:
00:01:32
getting down to your traumas and your,
your core wounds, and she mentioned
27
:
00:01:37
someone named PM Melody, who, um, wrote
a book called Facing Codependence.
28
:
00:01:45
So I'm gonna read it
and I'm gonna have Dr.
29
:
00:01:47
Becky back on.
30
:
00:01:49
So stay tuned for that because we're
gonna talk about how to figure out, so
31
:
00:01:53
even if you don't read the book, how you
can figure out what those core wounds and
32
:
00:01:58
what's affecting you in your marriage.
33
:
00:02:00
'cause the bottom line is we
darlings need to be healthy in
34
:
00:02:06
order to have a healthy marriage.
35
:
00:02:07
And then, you know, Dr.
36
:
00:02:09
Becky was really kind of grounded in
the fact that there's no surefire way.
37
:
00:02:14
To, you know, keep a marriage going
strong or to pick the right mate.
38
:
00:02:20
However, if we can be strong in
ourselves, it can improve our marriage.
39
:
00:02:24
And if things go south, it helps us
so that we can handle it if it does.
40
:
00:02:29
So, good information to have.
41
:
00:02:32
Uh, there was one thing we were
kind of laughing about because I had
42
:
00:02:36
said, um, and I always write this
in little wedding cards because I
43
:
00:02:40
heard this in my marriage class.
44
:
00:02:43
35 years ago, um, before I married
my husband, I heard couples that
45
:
00:02:49
pray together every day only
have a 2% divorce rate, and Dr.
46
:
00:02:55
Becky kind of was like, huh,
I'd like to see that study.
47
:
00:03:00
So I told her that I would
look it up, and so I did.
48
:
00:03:04
And um, I found the information.
49
:
00:03:10
This is what I found.
50
:
00:03:12
While shared religious practices including
praying together are associated with
51
:
00:03:18
higher marital satisfaction, there is no
conclusive academic evidence to support
52
:
00:03:25
the claim that daily prayer together
reduces the divorce rate to 2% or less.
53
:
00:03:33
Couples interested in strengthening
their marriage may find value in shared
54
:
00:03:38
spiritual activities, but it's important
to approach such statistics with a
55
:
00:03:43
critical eye and consider the broader
context of relationship dynamics.
56
:
00:03:50
Okay, so maybe she was kind of right, but
I still feel like there's hope in that.
57
:
00:03:56
Uh, so I'm not sure how I'm
gonna phrase it in my cards.
58
:
00:03:59
I still recommend it.
59
:
00:04:00
I still think it's helpful.
60
:
00:04:01
I think it's one of the things that I've
done, and that's all I can share with you.
61
:
00:04:04
I'm an expert in the field
of marriage because I've been
62
:
00:04:07
married for 34 years, so, um, I.
63
:
00:04:12
Becky was kind of, Dr.
64
:
00:04:13
Becky was kind of right about that, but
I think there still is hope in that.
65
:
00:04:17
And another thing that I forgot to mention
that we're gonna be discussing with Dr.
66
:
00:04:21
Be Becky, um, a few months out is
she did write an amazing book called.
67
:
00:04:28
I think I want out.
68
:
00:04:30
What do I do when one of you
wants to end your marriage?
69
:
00:04:34
What to do when one of you
wants to end your marriage?
70
:
00:04:38
So I just bought it.
71
:
00:04:40
I'm gonna be, you can find it on Amazon.
72
:
00:04:43
There's a link in the show notes.
73
:
00:04:45
So go find it 'cause Dr.
74
:
00:04:46
Becky's got, uh, great information too,
and we're gonna talk about that as well.
75
:
00:04:51
So what do you do when
the marriage is ending?
76
:
00:04:54
Thank you so much for being here.
77
:
00:04:56
If you wanna hear more, Dr.
78
:
00:04:57
Becky's fun to listen to.
79
:
00:04:58
Go back to Tuesday's episode.
80
:
00:05:01
Take good care.
