There was a point in my life when I made a big change.
After 22 years in one school district, I moved to a new one.
And I knew it was going to be good.
I felt that.
But what I didn’t fully expect was just how much better it would be than I could have possibly imagined.
It wasn’t that I was unhappy before.
I wasn’t.
But the change—it brought something new.
Something different.
And it reminded me of something important.
Careers don’t stay the same.
And maybe they’re not supposed to.
Before we get into it, I’m going to ground myself in gratitude.
Here are three things that I’m thankful for.
The first thing that I’m thankful for is the courage to make a change.
Even when something is good, stepping into something new takes something.
And I’m thankful for that courage.
The second thing that I’m thankful for is new environments that bring fresh energy.
Walking into a new space, meeting new people—it can bring out something different in you.
And the third thing that I’m thankful for is people who welcome you in.
When you step into something new and people make you feel like you belong—that matters.

There’s a common way we think about careers.
Pick something.
Stick with it.
Build it over time.
And while there’s value in that, the reality is shifting.
So the topic once again is why careers will keep changing.
Careers are no longer linear.
The idea that you have one path for life is fading.
People move.
They shift.
They adjust.
That’s becoming more common—not less.
Change can lead to growth.
We talk about growth all the time in education.
But growth often comes through change.
New challenges.
New perspectives.
New opportunities.
Stepping into something unfamiliar can push you to grow—even if it feels uncertain.
Change isn’t just disruption.
It’s opportunity.
Comfort can sometimes limit growth.
Being comfortable isn’t always a bad thing.
But it can keep things the same.
And sometimes growth requires stepping beyond that.
New experiences reshape perspective.
When you change environments, you see things differently.
You learn in new ways.
That perspective matters.
Careers are influenced by changing systems.
The world is changing.
Technology.
Opportunities.
Needs.
New roles are created.
Others evolve.
And that change will continue.
Careers change because the world changes.
Students need to expect that.
We have to be honest with them.
Things won’t stay the same.
They will shift.
And preparing students means preparing them mentally for that.
Identity is bigger than a job title.
Who you are is not just what you do.
Jobs change.
Roles shift.
That doesn’t change your value.
Students need to understand that.
Skills transfer across change.
Thinking.
Communication.
Problem solving.
Applying skills in new environments.
That’s what lasts.
And that’s what we should be building.
Mindset matters more than certainty.
Being open to change.
Being willing to adjust.
To learn.
To grow.
That mindset shapes experience.
And outcomes.
And ultimately, change can lead to something better.
Not every change is easy.
But it can lead to something meaningful.
Sometimes something better than expected.
Careers don’t just change.
They evolve.
As I do a reflective close here, I want to say this:
When I look back at that decision to leave something that was good and step into something new, I didn’t have everything figured out.
But I moved forward anyway.
And it led to something better.
Careers aren’t meant to stay the same forever.
They grow.
They shift.
They evolve.
That’s not something to fear.
That’s something to be ready for.
So help your students build that mindset.
Not just to find a path.
But to adjust when that path changes.
Because it will.
