In our twenties and thirties, I feel like the
2
:world sort of opens up to us.
3
:I know a lot of girls and guys
in general felt more freedom once
4
:they got their driver's license.
5
:They went from not.
6
:Having their driver's license
and relying on someone else to
7
:transport them to now all of a
sudden having their driver's license.
8
:And I know a lot of people felt that
sense of freedom with that stage of life.
9
:I'd say I felt that sense of freedom
when I started making more adult money
10
:and realized that my adult money could
actually help me to travel the world, and
11
:I could spend that adult money on things
like travel and exploring new countries.
12
:So I know a lot of girls, especially in
their twenties and thirties, who have
13
:maybe graduated college or grad school
and are starting that transition into.
14
:Real adulthood are wanting to
travel and experience new things.
15
:So what are some ways that we can
align our mindsets, our finances, if
16
:travel is a priority for us in 2026?
17
:Katie Kelton: Yeah, I totally agree.
18
:When I was young, the first thing I
wanted to do with my first paycheck
19
:was just like, go to Rome and go.
20
:To Northern Ireland,
and it is so empowering.
21
:But I also made some mistakes
when I did those trips.
22
:I spent way more than I need to.
23
:I, you know, I didn't know about
the resources available to me now.
24
:So I think a great place to
start would be to figure out.
25
:What kind of trip you'd like to go on?
26
:Because there are a million
gazillion factors to this.
27
:One of the biggest ones being
how much money do you wanna spend
28
:because, you know, the touristy
Instagram places, if you do it the
29
:whole way with the resort and the.
30
:Flight and all that, like peak
season, it's gonna be so expensive.
31
:So I would start by figuring out
how much money you wanna spend.
32
:You can figure out do I want
to be warm, do I want to hike,
33
:do I wanna visit a friend?
34
:Like there are so many
different ways to do it.
35
:And then of course there
are like tried and true.
36
:Tips for saving money, which are to
travel during the off season to do as
37
:the locals do, which is like taking
public transit and cooking when you can.
38
:And Airbnb experiences can be a
really cool way to have an experience
39
:without spending as much money.
40
:So anyway, figuring out the
kind of trip you wanna go on.
41
:Then what I would do is set up
a separate account and start
42
:putting your money in there.
43
:My fiance and I Airbnb a couple rooms out
of our house and we funnel all of those
44
:pay cuts directly into our travel account
because that's what we wanna use it for.
45
:If you have a side gig, maybe
you put your money in there.
46
:If not, you can also.
47
:Set up a transfer or put a certain
amount of money in there every month.
48
:'cause then you get to watch it grow
and you can start dreaming about
49
:where you're gonna go with the money
that's already in that account.
50
:It's also a good way to pay for the
trip with money you already have instead
51
:of going into debt for it, right?
52
:Because then you'll
end up paying interest.
53
:It just adds to the cost of
a trip with no value added.
54
:Kelsy: I don't know how prevalent the
Cheesecake Factory is around the nation
55
:or around the globe, but the Cheesecake
Factory menu, it's a restaurant.
56
:It's like so many pages and
it can be decision overload.
57
:And I felt the same way with travel.
58
:So I actually think your tip to like
actually think about the experience
59
:that you want because you see
these beautiful destinations and.
60
:A lot of the time you see the influencers
and all of these travel content
61
:creators going to these destinations
and you're like, I want that experience.
62
:And part of it, they're probably
getting paid for some of it, or they're
63
:getting gifted some of these stays, but
the world is so big and when I had no
64
:criteria on how to narrow that down, I
don't have to travel during a certain
65
:time of year because of kids or school.
66
:my job allows me to travel
during the off seasons.
67
:There's different parts of the world that
I wanna travel to, and I haven't been to
68
:so many places that it felt to me like
the Cheesecake Factory menu, where there
69
:were so many decisions to be made, so many
places to go, and it was overwhelming.
70
:So I actually think that that first tip
would've been a super helpful for me to
71
:be like, what experience do you want?
72
:Rather than just like of the shiny
things that I saw when it came to travel.
73
:So knowing we both have a few regrets
when it came to how we traveled early
74
:on, what are some of those things that
you wish you knew when it came to travel?
75
:Katie Kelton: When I became a credit
cards writer, ironically, I learned
76
:so much about how to help myself in my
personal life when it comes to taking
77
:advantage of like free credit card stuff.
78
:And I say this.
79
:With the caveat that you need
to be a responsible credit user,
80
:like don't carry a balance.
81
:I don't want you to ruin your credit
score for this, but for example, some of
82
:the best travel cards out there will give
you like 50 to a hundred thousand points
83
:as a welcome bonus when you get them.
84
:And you have to reach
them by spending like.
85
:$4,000 in three months, which kind of
sounds like a lot, but if you look at your
86
:budget, it's usually pretty achievable
or you can time it with a big purchase.
87
:So I use these welcome
bonuses to pay for my trips.
88
:And what I mean by that is,
like, for example, my fiance and
89
:I are planning a wedding, we're
gonna wanna go on a honeymoon.
90
:I just applied for one of these cards.
91
:I'm gonna use it to pay for some of
the down payments on my wedding stuff.
92
:Earn the welcome bonus,
which right now is.
93
:I'll even tell you it's
Capital One's Venture Card.
94
:They're having a boosted
welcome bonus right now.
95
:So you get 75,000 points and you get
a $250 Capital One travel credit.
96
:And when you get that by spending
$4,000 like that is gonna pay
97
:for our honeymoon flights.
98
:that will pay for one of our hotel nights.
99
:You know?
100
:And otherwise, like in my early
twenties, ironically, I had less
101
:money I was paying for all of this
out of pocket 'cause I didn't know.
102
:And so anyway, that's my advice
is to explore credit cards
103
:with welcome bonuses and then.
104
:Use a travel credit card for
all your other stuff too.
105
:at bank rate, I have statistically
found that people prefer cashback cards.
106
:I genuinely think it's
just easier to understand.
107
:You get this much dollar for this
much spend, but travel points actually
108
:tend to be worth more than cash back,
and it's so much more rewarding to
109
:pay for a flight than to get like.
110
:Money back as a statement,
credit on your card.
111
:So use your travel card to pay for
groceries, to pay for your essentials,
112
:and then you can use that stash
of points to pay for your trips.
113
:So that's my biggest money tip
for young people that I wish I
114
:had known in my early twenties.
115
:And other tips would be to do
things like travel during the off
116
:season, live like a local, save
your money and do things like that.
117
:Kelsy: I think that is definitely one
of the things that I did not understand
118
:early on, and luckily my husband
did understand that and he sort of
119
:forced it on me where the benefits
of credit cards and travel points and
120
:just like a silly little side note.
121
:When we first got married, he gave
me probably five or six credit
122
:cards and he was like, Kelsey,
I need you to use this for gas.
123
:I need you to use this for retail
purchases, this for groceries.
124
:And I was like, I need this spreadsheet.
125
:Why do I have to use certain
credit cards for certain things?
126
:And I didn't understand that he was
trying to maximize the points and the.
127
:Percent back that we got
with those points until
128
:Katie Kelton: Mm-hmm.
129
:Kelsy: first trip to Europe.
130
:And he's like, yeah, I
booked it all on points.
131
:It actually didn't come out of our
account and my jaw was on the floor.
132
:I was like, this is why it
mattered where I spent it.
133
:And I don't think you have
to get that intense at all.
134
:He just tracks it.
135
:And I think it helped
to have him track that.
136
:'cause I was completely lost.
137
:'cause some of it would also change
every three months where he'd be
138
:like, okay, now use this card for
groceries and this card for gas.
139
:And I was just like.
140
:I was laughing about it because I
didn't understand the benefits of
141
:it, and then when I finally saw the
payoff of we didn't have to spend on
142
:flights for our Europe trip exactly
as you said for your honeymoon.
143
:I was like, oh, this is cool.
144
:Like this is really awesome that our
family spending is paying for that trip.
145
:And He luckily has educated me on
this a little bit more, but knowing
146
:that if I spend a dollar here or if
cash back rate is a dollar and you
147
:get a dollar, but if you transfer
that to a flight or a hotel, that $1
148
:might turn into $3 if you use it for.
149
:Travel in some way.
150
:, So there are just some cool tips
and tricks that, that is probably
151
:one of my biggest regrets.
152
:It's not fully understanding that
whole system before, because it
153
:does make travel so much better.
154
:Katie Kelton: Yeah, I feel like my
fiance feels the same way that you felt.
155
:'cause I am always like, okay,
Now we're using this card.
156
:Or like last year I made him apply
for the Southwest credit card
157
:because they were giving away a
year's worth of a companion pass.
158
:And I was like, babe, think
of all the places we can go
159
:I'll fly for free so we can just.
160
:Pay for one flight.
161
:You know?
162
:And it's true once you get into it, it
helps if at least one person knows how
163
:to do it, and then the other person will
appreciate it once they realize like, oh,
164
:we're not actually paying for flights.
165
:Like it's an amazing perk.
166
:Kelsy: I call it free money.
167
:And he does not like that because he
also knows that it's a one-to-one.
168
:He's like, no, we could also
get this in cash, Kelsey.
169
:It's not technically free money, but
I still look at it as free money.
170
:'cause I'm like, Hey, it's not,
171
:Katie Kelton: Yeah.
172
:Kelsy: It's not coming.
173
:You know, I'm not having to.
174
:it out of the account that I
see the money, you know, and
175
:I, it's, it's the way that I
176
:Katie Kelton: Girl math
177
:Kelsy: I'm girl math it.
178
:Katie Kelton: it is free.
179
:Kelsy: Thank you.
180
:And he's, yeah, he sees it a little more
logically, which again, it helps, but
181
:Katie Kelton: Yeah.
182
:Kelsy: But it's one of those things
that I do wish I knew earlier.
183
:Do you have any other favorite travel
credit cards or different things if
184
:people wanna fly domestically versus
internationally or how they prefer
185
:to experience a certain destination?
186
:Katie Kelton: Sure.
187
:My favorite travel card of all time
that I use, like daily, I've already
188
:cashed in the welcome bonus, but
I use it for my regular spending
189
:is the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
190
:It gets good rewards on everyday
stuff like dining and drug stores.
191
:And then I just accrue a stash of
points that I can use with Chase.
192
:And then I mentioned for my.
193
:Wedding, we're gonna use the
Capital One Venture Card.
194
:Another reason I like these is because
the annual fee is under a hundred dollars
195
:and I can justify that for an entire year
of spending and rewards Some of these
196
:premium cards get into like the $800.
197
:Speed kudos.
198
:If you can maximize all the perks and
rewards, that is not in my budget.
199
:And so I don't use those cards.
200
:But if you have a preferred bank,
a lot of banks offer a version of
201
:that mid-tier travel card, Amex,
Citi, discover look and see what's
202
:available, where you currently lend.
203
:For domestic flights.
204
:I also think there is a lot of merit to
airline branded cards like Southwest,
205
:for example, I fly Southwest a lot
'cause I live in the Southwest.
206
:I have the card, I like the perks.
207
:You get free checked bags with the card.
208
:You get free wifi with the
card and you can accrue points
209
:for Southwest specifically.
210
:And there's a version of
that for most airlines.
211
:You can also look, and this is
getting in the weeds here, I would
212
:say if the listener does not wanna
do all this, I completely understand.
213
:But there are something called transfer
partners, which you alluded to earlier,
214
:and some airlines partner with card
issuers so that when you transfer points
215
:from the card to your loyalty program with
that airline, they're actually worth more.
216
:So if you do have a beloved airline.
217
:An alternate route to getting a co-branded
card would be to check and see which
218
:lender they are a transfer partner with.
219
:That way you can earn points with
that card directly, transfer them to
220
:your favorite airline, and you might
get even more bang for your buck.
221
:Kelsy: You explained that a lot more
beautifully than I did because I was like,
222
:I hope people understand what I'm saying.
223
:But that really has been how we've
been able to maximize and get, I
224
:guess, more money, you know, more
girl math, more money for our money.
225
:I told my sister recently
about the honeymoon.
226
:She's also getting married this
year and looking for honeymoon.
227
:So I told her exactly about,
Hey, y'all should look into.
228
:Some of these credit cards to get some
of those welcome bonuses because you
229
:know, two grand here on flowers and then
you know, four grand here on catering.
230
:And I know some people are
probably eye-rolling at those
231
:prices out on both extremes.
232
:Like, wow, that's so cheap.
233
:Or, wow, that's so expensive.
234
:But it's those bigger purchases, like
you said, getting that credit card
235
:to get those bonuses to be able to
girl math it and get free flights or.
236
:Hotels later on too.
237
:I think it's one of the, hottest travel
tips that has really helped us be
238
:able to travel more since we've been
married because he understood that.
239
:And like you said, having one
partner that understands that and
240
:the other one will maybe catch up
once they see the benefits from it.
241
:I think it'd be cool if it was
all the girls here that were like,
242
:no, this is how we can get, you
know, free money for our partners
243
:or our trips together as a couple.
244
:I think that's awesome.
245
:Katie Kelton: Totally.
246
:And if you're single and you just
wanna travel, like fund your life's.
247
:Style with points.
248
:I fully support that you're gonna
spend the money anyway, so you
249
:might as well get something for it.
250
:Kelsy: it.
251
:Well, thank you so much
for coming on and chatting.
252
:Travel with us.
253
:I think you explained things so
beautifully and I know we're only
254
:just scratching the surface, so if
people want more resources for travel
255
:and travel credit cards, I will leave
the link to Katie's articles and
256
:post below for you guys to go back
into and just like look and see.
257
:I also think this can be confusing
and some of the terminology can be
258
:very confusing, I actually think
AI is a really good use for this.
259
:Where if you hear us say certain
phrases or certain things that you
260
:don't understand, I know I have done
it for financial emails that I get,
261
:or travel credit card emails or posts
that I get sent in my newsletter.
262
:I'm like, I have no idea what this means.
263
:Can you explain it to me
like I am in kindergarten?
264
:And that way they can just help you.
265
:Define it.
266
:chat can help you understand what
we mean, even if the larger words
267
:and terminology and more financial
words and terminology might not make
268
:that much sense to you right now.
269
:So I think AI is a good use for this
too, because this really is a super key.
270
:travel hack that a lot
of people dunno about.
271
:Katie Kelton: Of course AI is also
really good at math, and if you're
272
:thinking about interest and you wanna
know how much you're accruing, how
273
:much you'll pay, how much should I be
putting in my account using interest?
274
:AI is way better at figuring
that out than I would ever be,
275
:so you can use it that way too.
276
:Kelsy: I love it.
277
:Well, thank you so much for coming
on chatting Travel with us and I hope
278
:you guys learned a lot from Katie.
279
:I'll leave again all those links
and resources below and I'll
280
:see you guys again in the next
episode of Wellness Big Sis the pod
281
:Katie Kelton: Thanks Kelsey.
282
:So fun.
