Shownotes

This midweek update dives into the aftermath of the recent presidential election and its impact on our lives, particularly in the realm of home improvement and the radio industry. We discuss the significant layoffs occurring in the radio sector, highlighting the loss of local talent as major companies shift towards a more centralized model. As we look ahead to 2025, it's essential to start planning now for home remodeling projects, especially with Black Friday sales on the horizon that could offer great deals on materials. We encourage listeners to take this time to enjoy family and reflect on their home improvement goals while supporting local stations and their sponsors. Join us as we navigate these changes and share insights on making the most of the upcoming holiday season.

The midweek update offers a nuanced perspective on the aftermath of the election, touching on the emotional states of listeners as they process the results. Eric G. emphasizes the importance of democratic participation, stating that the act of voting is significant in itself. He urges listeners to approach their relationships with empathy and respect, especially during times of political division. The plea for grace is particularly timely, as many navigate feelings of anger or disappointment, and Eric's message serves as a reminder that unity is essential for moving forward.

In a sobering turn, the discussion shifts to the recent layoffs in the radio industry, particularly focusing on the situation at iHeartMedia. Eric provides an insider’s view of the changes sweeping through the radio landscape, including the trend of 'tracking' where a small number of DJs record for multiple stations. This not only diminishes the local flavor of radio but also leads to significant job losses for talented individuals. The episode highlights the importance of supporting local radio stations and their sponsors to help preserve the unique voices that contribute to the community.

Towards the end of the episode, listeners are given actionable advice regarding upcoming Black Friday sales. Eric encourages homeowners to start planning their remodeling projects for 2025, leveraging the sales to secure materials at lower prices. He underscores the need to support American-made products and navigate the potential changes in pricing due to tariffs. This segment is particularly empowering, equipping listeners with practical strategies to take control of their home improvement plans while fostering a spirit of community and resilience. The episode ultimately combines reflection on current events with a forward-looking approach, urging listeners to act with intention as they prepare for the future.

Takeaways:

  • Post-election, it's vital to give grace to others regardless of differing political views.

Speaker A:

It's AROUND THE house.

Speaker A:

When it comes to remodeling and renovating your home, there is a lot to know, but we've got you covered.

Speaker A:

This is AROUND THE house.

Eric G.:

Welcome to the Round the House show, the next generation of home improvement.

Eric G.:

Thanks for joining me today.

Eric G.:

I'm Eric G.

Eric G.:

This is our midweek update.

Eric G.:

This is the update that we give in the middle of the week that talks about the stuff that we didn't talk about last week and of course aren't going to talk about in this weekend's show.

Eric G.:

And I know we had a quick update yesterday, so this one isn't going to be too long today.

Eric G.:

But as we all wake up this morning from the hangover of the presidential election yesterday and be thankful today, guys, that the political ads are off the air and something I totally understand that from the media point of view, this has been really good for them because those billions of dollars ended up keeping your favorite radio station, your favorite TV station on the air probably for another year.

Eric G.:

And as we're seeing the state of media out there, my heart goes out to all of the people out there in the iHeart Media Land of radio with all of the layoffs.

Eric G.:

There is massive layoffs this week here with a lot of people across iHeartMedia.

Eric G.:

And as we're watching radio change out there, it is something that is just heartbreaking to me because there's so much talent that is getting lost.

Eric G.:

And a lot of this is major radio companies out there that are getting rid of that talent because they do what they call in radio tracking.

Eric G.:

Now here's a little insider baseball.

Eric G.:

Even though this is a home improvement show, this is also a national radio show as well.

Eric G.:

And so what you're seeing in the is these large companies is they're getting rid of the local talent.

Eric G.:

They will take the best talent and they do tracking.

Eric G.:

So that radio DJ will sit down in maybe four or five or six markets and they will cut the intros and outros for songs.

Eric G.:

Coming up next, we've got Jelly Roll.

Eric G.:

Coming up next, we've got the Scorpions we have.

Eric G.:

And they cut those and feed them into the machine.

Eric G.:

And then they can be on eight or 10 radio stations all at the same time for their quote shift.

Eric G.:

And they can make it a little personal to your area, whatever.

Eric G.:

And they track those.

Eric G.:

So a little behind the baseball on that.

Eric G.:

Many of your favorite DJs might not even be in your market because they are tracking that all while laying off the talented people that were in your market.

Eric G.:

And we are seeing that with radio across the board, we're seeing what used to be a lot of small radio stations out there got bought up by the big guys and the big guys are going bankrupt.

Eric G.:

And so we're seeing a lot of that.

Eric G.:

And I hope that our local radio stations out there.

Eric G.:

Well, we have.

Eric G.:

We are on a lot of these big major stations out there.

Eric G.:

But at the same point, I hope that these local stations, your favorite ones that are locally owned, keep that people on the air, support them, listen to them, deal with your favorite shows.

Eric G.:

If you're listening to a favorite show out there, do business with their sponsors.

Eric G.:

That's what keeps these things alive.

Eric G.:

So my heart goes out to all of you people out there in the radio industry that have been losing their jobs this week.

Eric G.:

It has been a tough go.

Eric G.:

I'd be amiss by not mentioning the election.

Eric G.:

I know there is a majority of the people out there that woke up this morning after the election, looking at the popular vote, saying, who?

Eric G.:

I have a little hope for:

Eric G.:

At the same point, I know I have a lot of my viewing audience and listening audience out there that woke up with a sick feeling to their stomach this morning and they're very upset for the loss.

Eric G.:

And this is exactly the opposite feeling of four years ago.

Eric G.:

And I did this on my own personal Facebook post.

Eric G.:

I don't care who you voted for.

Eric G.:

I really don't.

Eric G.:

I'm happy you went out and voted.

Eric G.:

You said what you had to say.

Eric G.:

I'm seeing a lot of hateful posts this morning on my social media feed of friends out there that are saying, man, if you voted for X, I don't want to be your friend.

Eric G.:

I don't want to be.

Eric G.:

And that's unfortunately part of the problem we have.

Eric G.:

And hopefully that these people will see those.

Eric G.:

They'll calm down a little bit and take those things down, or they could lose a lot of friends.

Eric G.:

There's a lot of people out there that voted who don't know and didn't tell anybody who they voted for.

Eric G.:

And that is their right and we should respect that.

Eric G.:

And I know who I voted for.

Eric G.:

I know who my wife voted for.

Eric G.:

And it's all good, guys.

Eric G.:

Just let's give a little bit of grace out there to people that are hurting today.

Eric G.:

And for the people out there on the winning side of things this time, let's give a little grace to them as well.

Eric G.:

And hopefully they'll give it to you the next time this stuff happens.

Eric G.:

Now there's a lot left to play out, of course, in the election.

Eric G.:

going to make predictions for:

Eric G.:

I think we will see costs come down.

Eric G.:

I think we're going to see oil prices come down.

Eric G.:

If the promises were made or kept, this could be a more affordable year for Americans.

Eric G.:

Let's see what happens.

Eric G.:

Nothing's really going to change much here in the next six months because it's just not that quick.

Eric G.:

It didn't happen overnight and it takes a little while to undo that.

Eric G.:

So plan ahead six months of more of the status quo and hopefully springtime, we'll start to see some relief from this stuff.

Eric G.:

I could be wrong, it could happen quicker, could not happen at all.

Eric G.:

But I think that we're going to be on the right track to do that.

Eric G.:

So let's see what happens.

Eric G.:

I'm very happy here in my hometown here of Portland, Oregon.

Eric G.:

I live outside of the city, so it wasn't a threat to me.

Eric G.:

But I'm happy that last night we did not see riots.

Eric G.:

I know Seattle, you guys saw a little bit up there, but the police jumped on it and got it quickly.

Eric G.:

So if we can keep that civil unrest down, that is such a great cause to keep that down so we don't lose any more minority owned businesses in the city core.

Eric G.:

And it was really creepy yesterday.

Eric G.:

Had friends sending me pictures of downtown here where businesses were boarding up and everything else and they were getting ready for it.

Eric G.:

I don't think it's over yet, but let's see what happens between now and the next four or five days.

Eric G.:

It could be quiet, so we'll see what happens.

Eric G.:

I hope it does.

Eric G.:

I hope cooler heads prevail.

Eric G.:

The last thing we need to see is more property damage.

Eric G.:

We've had enough with hurricanes and stuff across this country.

Eric G.:

We don't need to see more.

Eric G.:

So what would I do here the next few months going into the holidays?

Eric G.:

family, do some planning for:

Eric G.:

If you're going to be doing some remodeling projects, now's the time to do some planning because we got Black Friday sales coming up here at the end of the month.

Eric G.:

Might be a good time to buy some of those materials if you can find the right, the right stuff.

Eric G.:

So what I would do is I know there's some big Friday Black Friday sales coming up.

Eric G.:

next week or two planning out:

Eric G.:

Hey, what would you like to do for Remodeling projects.

Eric G.:

Take a look.

Eric G.:

There might be some sales.

Eric G.:

I am seeing a lot of stuff coming up in the home improvement stuff that maybe you need some new things.

Eric G.:

Take a peek out.

Eric G.:

There might be a great time to buy and get it at a good price and support all of our Made in USA businesses.

Eric G.:

I think as well is that we're going to see a lot of that being promoted over the next four years and I think we will see some tariffs.

Eric G.:

So if you are buying stuff that is obviously made overseas, might be a great time to buy it right now because it could be more expensive and we could see that Made in America stuff becoming less expensive.

Eric G.:

So we'll see what happens out there.

Eric G.:

It's all speculation.

Eric G.:

No one knows.

Eric G.:

But you might want to grab those Black Friday deals and enjoy that.

Eric G.:

I got to get back to work here, guys.

Eric G.:

I had a lot to do.

Eric G.:

We did a nice episode yesterday if you missed it on a Tuesday, which is a little rare for us.

Eric G.:

But I just wanted to get out there and talk about what happened overnight last night.

Eric G.:

And I have a busy day ahead today.

Eric G.:

Playing catch up because I stayed up way too late last night trying to figure out what was going on in the world and it was early this morning that I got to bed.

Eric G.:

So I know many of you stayed up late.

Eric G.:

I know many of you went to bed and woke up this morning and went, wow, what just happened?

Eric G.:

And that's okay.

Eric G.:

Let's give grace to our neighbors.

Eric G.:

Let's take some time to heal.

Eric G.:

We could use a lot of that right now out there.

Eric G.:

All right, that's enough of my soapbox, guys.

Eric G.:

As always with home improvement plan ahead, do some planning and look for those great deals right now to save you some money.

Eric G.:

We got a great show coming up this weekend.

Eric G.:

You won't want to miss couple great interviews.

Eric G.:

We'll be talking about some new subjects as well.

Eric G.:

Thanks for tuning in to around the House.

Eric G.:

Happy midweek.

Eric G.:

We made it through the election and now we don't have those ads that drive us nuts every single day.

Eric G.:

Now let's get back to our regularly scheduled program called Life.

Eric G.:

We'll see you on Saturday.

Eric G.:

Thanks for tuning in to around the House.

Speaker C:

Somewhere unseen and undiscovered Anywhere out beyond the me love is a love song let's be lovers we're all over the radio Take my hand I know where to go all over the radio with.
