Summary
Do you ever find yourself kneeling down to pray, only to realize five minutes later that you've been mentally reviewing your grocery list or replaying a frustrating conversation? If you are struggling with a wandering mind and asking, "How do you talk to God?" you are certainly not alone. In this episode of the Arise, Women of God podcast, host Tamara K. Anderson and guest Bonnie Randall explore the beautiful, informal dialects of divine communication.
We break down the formal prayer barrier, discussing why singing, walking, and even crying can be profound forms of worship. Bonnie shares an incredible visualization hack specifically for the "ADHD monkey chatter" in our brains, teaching us how deep breathing and visualizing a literal heart connection with Jesus can transform hollow prayers into sacred conversations. We also discuss the "body check" method—how to tell the difference between the anxious, "twitter-pated" excitement the adversary produces versus the deep, grounding peace that only comes from God. Whether you're looking to pour out your heart as described in Psalm 62 or simply seeking to recognize God’s voice through physical signals like warmth or chills, this episode is packed with practical takeaways. Tune in to learn how to talk to God naturally, moving from checking off a spiritual box to pouring out your authentic heart!

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Arise Women of God podcast. I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and joining me today is the wonderfully amazing Bonnie Randall, who is a fantastic warrior of light.
And today we're exploring the many dialects of divine communication. First, we're going to break down the formal prayer barrier, discussing why dancing, singing, and even yelling can be forms of worship.
Second, we'll tackle the ADHD brain. And here Bonnie's going to share that fantastic visualization hack that has allowed her to hear God's voice back.
Third, we're going to discuss the body check, how to tell the difference between the Twitter painted feeling or excitement that the adversary can produce and the deep feeling of peace from God. And finally, we'll look at the refuge principle from Psalm 62.
But let's kick it off by having Bonnie share a little bit about what prayer can actually look like.
Bonnie Randall:You know, I love that question so much because I talk to him all the time in a million different ways. I feel like everything can be prayer. I feel like dance can be prayer. Song is most definitely prayer for me.
I feel the spirit so strongly when I'm singing. I feel like prayer is when we're crying or when we're yelling. And there are times when I will just be on a walk and I'll just start talking to him.
I don't need to say any fancy words or whatever because I just know that he wants to hear me and wants to talk with me and he's just happy no matter where I'm at, what I'm doing. If I call out to him and even just say, ugh, Lord, that is a prayer.
Tamara K Anderson:But even when we know we can talk to him anywhere. Sometimes it still feels like we're not getting anything back.
Bonnie struggled for years with this chatter in her head until a friend taught her a specific way to anchor her mind.
Bonnie Randall:But me and my ADHD brain, I would say a prayer, and then I try to listen, but then. Then I'd get bored, and my mind would start wandering, and I'd go here, there, and everywhere.
And it just wasn't really a very meaningful process for me. And then a friend taught me how to do prayerful meditations, and she taught me to do some deep breathing before I knelt and prayed or wherever I was.
And she also had me visualize connecting with Jesus and connecting with my God.
And what that looked like was imagining that my heart has a light in it and that God has light, and imagining that our two lights were coming together and weaving around each other, and that would establish a connection. And then I would start speaking, start saying whatever I need to say.
And every time I do that, when I start with the deep breathing and I kind of of calm my body down, and then I do that, what we call a heart connection with God, something miraculous happens. The monkey chatter starts to slow, and it starts to be purposeful.
When I start giving my mind something to think about, I'm then able to clue in and see that some of the thoughts that are come to me, coming to me, the images, the memories, the people, scriptures, songs. God speaks to me in so many different ways that I also needed to figure out, oh, each of these little pings is actually Him.
Tamara K Anderson:That image of lights weaving together is so beautiful. It reminds me of the verse in Psalm 662. Eight, trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us.
When we pour out our hearts to him. We are not just sending words into the void. We are entering a refuge where we can be our true, authentic self.
But once those thoughts start coming, we have to ensure that we are tuned into the right source.
Bonnie Randall:God, is that you? Is that my answer? And then I start to notice how I feel, because Satan can't manufacture peace.
He can manufacture excitement, he can manufacture fascination. He can even manufacture joy and happiness. But it kind of comes in more of this, like, Twitter painted, excited, Ooh.
I'm, like, really interested and curious about that. That is slightly different than God's joy, God's peace. And so then I pause and I say, what am I feeling? I'm feeling calm, I'm feeling comfort.
I'm feeling. I might feel kind of like this Burning sensation, this warmth, sensation in my chest. For me, that is God.
Another way I feel God is, is I will get chills, I'll get goosebumps. Especially if I'm speaking truth and God wants to confirm that truth. My body speaks to me, so he speaks to me through my body in that way.
Tamara K Anderson:Isn't it great to know that your body can be like a spiritual antenna? And if you really want to heighten that connection, sometimes you just need to picture the person on the other end of the line.
Bonnie Randall:Sometimes I have found visualizing Jesus sitting next to me is some of the most sacred times. I will picture his face and his eyes and his smile. I'll picture his hands.
And whenever I do that, I can always feel that he is with me, that his spirit is there.
And in those moments when I've done the deep breathing and I've kind of calmed myself and gotten ready for that prayer, those answers come a lot clearer. Sometimes I still have to work through things, but I have found that the peace and the comfort and that knowledge that God knows me, it's there.
It's beautiful. Even now, talking about it, I can feel that, that comfort and that peace.
Tamara K Anderson:So, my friends, talking to God isn't about using fancy words. It's about the weaving of lights.
Whether you're singing on a walk or picturing his smile, when you breathe through a stressful moment, Jesus is your refuge. You can pour out your heart to him because he is already holding it.
