What makes a business scalable? Most people assume scaling is all about sales and marketing - more leads, more customers, more revenue. But if your delivery depends on you (your calendar, your time, your energy), more demand can actually create more chaos.
In this episode, Tara breaks down what really makes a scalable business and introduces two sides of growth:
✅ Demand (sales + marketing that bring customers in)
✅ Delivery (systems + infrastructure that let you serve more people without maxing out your calendar)
If you’ve ever felt like “more clients” would just mean “more overwhelmed,” this one is for you.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Quick gut-check question:
What would happen if you added 10… 100… or 1,000 new customers today? Would your business handle it - or would everything break?

expert framework and you can

to be able to scale your business.
16
:Alright, let's get started.
17
:Hey everybody.
18
:Welcome to today's episode of
This Scalable Expert podcast.
19
:I am thrilled that you're here.
20
:Hey, I was just traveling for
business and I was with a colleague
21
:of mine and we had a, a great time.
22
:We had a blast.
23
:If you travel with some of your, um,
fellow entrepreneurs or colleagues
24
:on a regular basis, I applaud you.
25
:If not, go check it out because it
gives you that nice bit of energy
26
:that you would need to keep going.
27
:So one of the conversations that we
were having on our long road trip was
28
:around scale, and she said, you know, I
just, I, I don't really get it, right?
29
:Like, I think scale is about marketing and
sales, and that's not exactly what you do.
30
:So tell me a little bit more about
the Scalable Expert because you're
31
:not really teaching about marketing
and you're not teaching about sales.
32
:That's not really your focus, so tell
me about what scale means to you.
33
:And I love this question, so of
course we riffed on this for a
34
:while, but I wanna bring it to you
here on the podcast because I think
35
:it's a really key distinction.
36
:So often when people say, I wanna
scale my business, what they're, what
37
:they're thinking is they want more
customers in their business, right?
38
:They want more marketing, uh, well,
they don't want more marketing,
39
:they're doing more marketing.
40
:They're doing more sales,
with the intention of bringing
41
:on more customers, right?
42
:You wanna go from the amount of
customers that you have today to
43
:a, a, a larger amount of customers
in order to grow your business.
44
:And so often, you know, based on, on
the conversation we were having, that
45
:was her, sort of, lens in terms of when
she thinks of scaling her business she
46
:thinks about acquiring more customers
and growing and scaling it in that way.
47
:Which is absolutely true so
that is demand scale, right?
48
:So you are building demand in the market
so that you can scale your business
49
:through acquiring more customers.
50
:The part of scale that a lot of
times people forget or don't think
51
:about is what we call delivery scale.
52
:So if you are acquiring new customers,
but you are the expert, you are the one
53
:who's doing all of the things, whenever
you bring in a new customer, it increases
54
:the demand that you have in terms of
your time and attention in your business.
55
:And so in order to grow and scale
your business, you have to grow
56
:and scale your ability to serve the
people that are coming in, right?
57
:So those new sales, those new,
customers that are coming in, you
58
:have to scale your delivery in order
to be able to handle that, right?
59
:So if you think about it, what would
happen if today you would bring in 10, a
60
:hundred or even a thousand new customers?
61
:What would happen to your business?
62
:What would happen to you and your time?
63
:Would you see a change in what you're
doing, or would you be able to handle
64
:all of that new volume that came
in to your business on the sales
65
:and marketing side of the house?
66
:Most people will say that they can't
handle that level of demand, right?
67
:So they're not, their business is not
ready for that increase in volume.
68
:So when we're talking about scaling
your delivery, what we're talking about
69
:is how do you actually add that many
customers into your business without
70
:it maxing out your calendar, without
it maxing out your time and attention?
71
:How do you serve your clients at the
highest level without really just like
72
:losing your mind, right, because you're
adding so much more demand for the same
73
:number of hours that you have in the day.
74
:So as a Scalable Expert, what
we're doing is we're helping
75
:people prepare to be scalable.
76
:We're helping them prepare their
delivery systems, the way that they
77
:grow and scale their business so
that they can take on that additional
78
:demand in terms of new customers.
79
:So when people come to us, yes, you're
trying to solve the, the equation
80
:of how do you add more customers?
81
:Right?
82
:We're always, we will always be doing
that as business owners, that's not
83
:something that's ever really gonna change.
84
:Even when you have systems that are, you
know, bringing in leads and helping you
85
:acquire customers, you're always going to
be working on that side of the business.
86
:And you're always gonna be working
on the delivery side of the business.
87
:But our goal is to make you scalable.
88
:To put you in a position from being an
expert operator, from being overwhelmed
89
:with the way that you're delivering
your expertise to creating systems that
90
:scaled, creating delivery, engagement,
and different ways that you're helping
91
:your customers, so it doesn't take
you any more time, but you're able
92
:to serve them at the highest level.
93
:So that my friends, it was my answer
to her as we were talking is that scale
94
:is yes, sales and marketing, but it's
also being able to grow and scale the,
95
:the infrastructure of your business
so that you can handle that, right?
96
:So you need to scale your delivery so
you can become scalable, which means
97
:that you can become a Scalable Expert.
98
:If you loved learning about the
distinction between the two types of
99
:scale, give me a shout out 'cause I
would love to hear whether or not this
100
:resonates with you as you're thinking
about growing and scaling your business.
101
:Because it's not just
about sales and marketing.
102
:It's really about how do you become
scalable as a business owner, as
103
:an expert, as the business driver
of, really being able to serve your
104
:customers at the highest level.
105
:If you love this, give us a shout.
106
:Give us a rating and, pass it on to your
friends and colleagues, especially those
107
:that you are taking road trips with
out as you are connecting with others.
108
:All right, until next time.
