Transcripts

Dr. Amber Selking:

Welcome back to Building Championship Mindsets, the podcast.

Dr. Amber Selking:

This is your host, Dr.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Amber Selking, where we are in season 15 entitled Sports Psych in Scripture.

Dr. Amber Selking:

This has been one of my favorite seasons, really exploring the intersection of what sports psychology has to say and what scripture has to say.

Dr. Amber Selking:

At the Stalking Performance Group, we focus on keynotes, one on one performance coaching, and really helping individuals, teams and business organizations understand and leverage the power of mindset and leadership to unleash performance excellence.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because, listen, I believe the world needs greatness now more than ever.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And I also believe that the way we accomplish greatness is learning how to think, right?

Dr. Amber Selking:

That is, build mindsets that are conducive to human high performance and leadership, which is building systems that help people live freely and perform their absolute best on a consistent basis.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so, to me, this season is really special because when.

Dr. Amber Selking:

When I first got into the field of sports psychology, it struck me, holy smokes.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Everything that I'm learning is in the Bible.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because my faith has been really important to me since I've been a little girl.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And it's been something that's guided me, grounded me, challenged me, helped correct me, keep me focused and disciplined in various aspects of my life.

Dr. Amber Selking:

My mom always jokes that, I'm so glad you've had Jesus since a very young age, because otherwise I feel like you'd be in jail.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And I was like, wow, thanks, mom.

Dr. Amber Selking:

That's aggressive.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And she's like, well, you're aggressive.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So there's that.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so listen, I love life and I love attacking life.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I love winning.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I love passion and being on the edge.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And listen, being on the edge can be scary because the edge requires balance and strong tethers to what is right, because the line to what is wrong can get really, really close in so many ways.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so what I've found is that my faith has just been this incredible, exhilarating force to be able to live a life so fully and so engaged and so on edge that it's.

Dr. Amber Selking:

It's allowed me to connect with so many different people and yet remain true to who I am and.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And who I know that I am.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so it's been so fun being able to share with people on either side of the spectrum.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Right?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because some people listening to this podcast, their faith is important to them, but they've never thought about how science can support their faith.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And then there's other people who are, like, very analytical and think their faith isn't relevant to them that listen to this and.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Or just kind of wild and doesn't think that faith is important to them.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And listen, I'm kind of wild.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So we're there together, but.

Dr. Amber Selking:

But to be able to see that man, man.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Science is supported by scripture.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And if you want to find a new layer to how you operate in life, add some science to your life or add some scripture to your life.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so my hope is that this is reaching the whole spectrum of our audience.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And if you don't want either side of that, then pick your side of what you do want, because I believe it can help you be even better than where you are right now.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So in this week, we are in season or episode 11 of season 15, and we're looking at this idea of recovery.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And in sports psychology, it's just critically important.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And most important, often from what I found when learning about and thinking about and teaching about recovery to high performers is really helping high performers think right about recovery.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So more than anything today, we're not going to do a ton of science on various specific aspects of recovery, but I want you to just understand and think right about recovery in general.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because a lot of times with high performers, I think they think recovery is something that you have to do when you get weak, right?

Dr. Amber Selking:

It's like, oh, I got injured, now I have to recover.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Or oh, I burnt myself out because I've been going too hard in the paint.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So now I have to recover.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And this is an indication of weakness.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Like, we gotta get off of that.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because if you push yourself too hard to where you have a mental or emotional breakdown or you burn yourself out or all of a sudden you just get depressed because you've literally burned your nerves at the endings because you haven't been able to recover, that's not helpful and that's not high performance.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so what we challenge our athletes and our and the business professionals that I work with is listen, you have to understand that recovery is part of the performance process.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And if, you know, we've, if you've listened to previous episodes, you might have heard me say that before.

Dr. Amber Selking:

You might have also heard us talk about four different energy systems that we really need to focus on recovery in.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So what we know is that humans have four energy systems, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And we get depleted in all four of those on a day to day basis.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so if we are not recovering on a day to day basis in those four energy systems, then we're not able to deliver our best on a consistent basis.

Dr. Amber Selking:

It's really awesome.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Down at lsu, I have the opportunity to serve as the mental performance coach.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And high performance consultant to coach Kelly down there for LSU football.

Dr. Amber Selking:

We've actually integrated recovery days into our weekly performance process.

Dr. Amber Selking:

We have this beautiful new recovery center that has basically every recovery modality you can think of, from float tanks to hot and cold tubs, to laser therapy, to yoga studios, to different stretching modalities to massage and all the different elements within our training room as well.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So anyways, literally everything you could think of.

Dr. Amber Selking:

But our guys are learning that, wow, these things help me bounce back better and get back on the field faster and feel back closer to my optimal body state.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because, listen, when you're in high performance, when you are in football season, your body is banged up.

Dr. Amber Selking:

That's just the reality of it.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so every element of recovery that you can integrate into your life helps you get a little bit closer to your body, feeling its best self when you get back into the week in preparation for another go at it on Saturday.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And life is no different, guys.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Life is a contact sport and we get beat up.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so we have to understand that recovery is important.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So what are you doing physically to recover?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Sleep, hydration, nutrition, exercise, yoga, stretching, what, massage, chiropractic work.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I'm a big believer in chiropractic and massage therapy to help keep your body at its best state.

Dr. Amber Selking:

What are you doing emotionally to recover?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Whether that's spending time with loved ones, with mentors, by yourself.

Dr. Amber Selking:

What are you doing mentally to recover?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Whether that's prayer, meditation, scripture.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Yoga is also, you know, breathing right in that all of those elements are mental recovery.

Dr. Amber Selking:

What are you doing for spiritual recovery?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Again, you could name all of those things in spiritual recovery as well.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Reading a book, taking a bath, being in nature.

Dr. Amber Selking:

All of these aspects help us recover in various ways, and we need to be intentional about that.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Or then we reflect on what we talked about last week as it relates to priority priorities.

Dr. Amber Selking:

If you're not recovered, you start putting the sand and the little in the unimportant stuff in your life first, trying to placate whatever pain you have that you're experiencing.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And then all of a sudden, the big rocks, the most important things in your life get shafted.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Your family, your spouse, your kids.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And you start making poor life decisions that distract you from who you've been created and called to be.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because that's how it works.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Listen, the last thing Satan wants is for men and women to understand who they've been created to be and to live into that identity freely.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so he's going to do anything that he can do to distract you from it.

Dr. Amber Selking:

From a priority standpoint.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And how he often gets to you is through depletion of your being.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And that's why recovery is so important.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And we look at this at the intersection of Scripture.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Mark 6:31 simply says, Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I think.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I think that element of by yourselves is really important.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I catch myself sometimes, you know, when I'm struggling and I'm trying to process things, or I know I'm depleted, I'll get in my car and I'll be driving, you know, to wherever and.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And I'll want to turn on the radio, right?

Dr. Amber Selking:

And I'm like, no, just be by yourself.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Be in a quiet place.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Listen to your heart, to your mind, to what God's saying to you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And then.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And then I'll do that for, like, literally 37 seconds.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And all of a sudden, like, one of my important mentors or someone that has been in my life that can help speak truth comes to my mind.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I'm like, oh, I want to call Liz.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Or, oh, I want to call my mom, right?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Or, oh, I want to call so and so.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And then I literally pick up the phone and I'm like, oh, my gosh, stop.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Be by yourself.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Be quiet for just a minute.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And again, doing research for this episode, it's like, I love this verse.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Just come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Jesus was saying that to his disciples in the moment because he knew, you're going to need rest to go through what you're about to go through, and you're going to need time by yourselves with me in a quiet place to be ready for what's ahead of you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because, like, we started.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Life is a contact sport.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Living on the edge is hard, man.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And if you want a life of high performance, you better be ready to rest.

Dr. Amber Selking:

You better be ready to be quiet and to listen.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because if you're not connected to the right source, if you're not thinking right, you're going to get distracted, Your priorities are going to get out of whack, and before you know it, you're going to turn around and you're going to be like, what in the hell am I doing?

Dr. Amber Selking:

And where in the hell am I going?

Dr. Amber Selking:

And who in the hell am I hurting in the process of this?

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so, as you think about this week, recovery, what do you need to do to pour into your life and to recover?

Dr. Amber Selking:

So that's your championship mindset training for this week, what is it?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Do you need to focus on physical, mental, emotional or spiritual recovery?

Dr. Amber Selking:

And then I want you to go away by yourself to a quiet place that could be a car drive for 15 minutes.

Dr. Amber Selking:

That could be a half day little retreat that you take by yourself that could be a day away.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Whatever it needs, whatever you need.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Go away by yourself to a quiet place and focus on an element of recovery so that you can reconnect with who you've been created and called to be and continue to show up to this world because the world needs you and it needs your best you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Your spouse needs you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Your kids need you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Your athletes need you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Your team members at work needs you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

The world needs you.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So don't be afraid of recovery.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Recovery is part of the performance process.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Don't let Satan distract you on what recovery truly is.

Dr. Amber Selking:

It's an opportunity to reconnect, to reengage, to get fueled up so that you can live on the edge of high performance as a parent, as a spouse, as a leader, as a coach, as a teacher, as a human being in this world.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Thank you so much for tuning into this episode.

Dr. Amber Selking:

As always, let us know what you think.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Hit us up on social media.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Tweet out the key takeaway that you had.

Dr. Amber Selking:

I keep saying tweet, man, this is X.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And I love.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Hey, if you don't know the story of X too.

Dr. Amber Selking:

So Elon Musk bought Twitter and he changed the name to X.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And do you know why he did that?

Dr. Amber Selking:

Because he lost his son Xavier to what he would call the woke mind virus.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And he believed social media platforms contributed to his son thinking wrongly in life and taking action on his life, that it means he's no longer here.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so he renamed Twitter X in honor of him as a reminder of the importance of thinking right.

Dr. Amber Selking:

Now, he doesn't say it like that, but that's how I say it, right?

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so I want to honor, I want to honor Xavier, I want to honor Elon, and I certainly want to honor what X really stands for.

Dr. Amber Selking:

And so put out on X.

Dr. Amber Selking:
