Speaker:Please enjoy “Fantastic Feast”
Speaker:by Darius Davis A thunderous rattle shook the mattress frame as James shuttered awake.
Speaker:The black and brown alpine goat’s eyes opened from the intense tremble.
Speaker:He grabbed onto the nearest ledge of the bed
Speaker:and held on for dear life.
Speaker:The area was due for another large earthquake.
Speaker:Was it on the scale like the
Speaker:Loma Prieta Earthquake two years ago?
Speaker:Regardless, he wasn’t about to die naked in another man’s bed,
Speaker:not today at least.
Speaker:He climbed out of the bed
Speaker:and crawled underneath for protection.
Speaker:Once on the ground,
Speaker:he realized that the floor and nearby walls hadn’t shaken.
Speaker:James carefully lifted his head up
Speaker:and saw how his boyfriend Dixon slowly stirred awake.
Speaker:The tall muscular black and white stallion
Speaker:let out a heavy yawn and rubbed his eyes.
Speaker:He reached over to his side of the bed and grabbed a remote
Speaker:which caused the mattress to stop shaking.
Speaker:Dixon looked over to James with a raised eyebrow,
Speaker:he saw how his alpine goat companion looked visibly startled on the floor.
Speaker:“What on earth was that?”
Speaker:James signed to him.
Speaker:“What? You mean the alarm?”
Speaker:Dixon signed back.
Speaker:“Alarm?” “Yeah, I use it to wake up every day.
Speaker:It’s not like I can hear with a normal alarm.”
Speaker:“Oh... well it scared the daylights out of me!
Speaker:I thought we were having another major earthquake!”
Speaker:James shook his hands to compose himself.
Speaker:Dixon snickered, “Aw,
Speaker:sorry to have frightened you love.
Speaker:Guess it must have slipped my mind.
Speaker:Though, the expression on your face is priceless.”
Speaker:James hurled a pillow at his boyfriend’s face while he retrieved his clothes.
Speaker:The stallion chuckled while his goat companion retreated into the master bathroom.
Speaker:In hindsight, he knew it made more sense for a deaf person to have something like a physical alarm system.
Speaker:He wasn’t truly annoyed at Dixon’s playful antics.
Speaker:The dreamy stallion hadn’t given him a tour of his home
Speaker:nor mentioned the assistive devices that were installed.
Speaker:Rather, once inside Dixon’s house, they immediately headed towards the master bedroom so the two could spend some... quality time together.
Speaker:James usually ended every date night in his home;
Speaker:however, this was his first night spent at Dixon’s place.
Speaker:Right now, what was more important was getting ready for the day.
Speaker:Today was Dixon’s thirty fifth birthday and a few of his deaf friends had planned to come over.
Speaker:While the two agreed to still keep the extent of their relationship a secret,
Speaker:James looked forward to getting well acquainted with Dixon’s inner circle of deaf friends.
Speaker:He was going to treat everyone to a fancy restaurant
Speaker:and set up a reservation by telephone.
Speaker:It would probably be his
Speaker:only opportunity to go out on a romantic date with Dixon,
Speaker:in a way that didn’t raise any suspicions.
Speaker:It wasn’t as though James and Dixon hadn’t gone out on dates beforehand.
Speaker:There had been the occasional movie night,
Speaker:bowling session, and beach getaway.
Speaker:Though they both had to assume the role of heterosexual friends rather than lovers who were on a date.
Speaker:And even with the extra guests,
Speaker:James intended to enjoy dining out with Dixon
Speaker:without suspicion from the wider public.
Speaker:After he had showered and groomed himself,
Speaker:it was midafternoon by the time he slid on his semi formal attire
Speaker:and headed out to the living room.
Speaker:Dixon had already sat in front of a small wooden table
Speaker:as he typed away at his state-of-the-art teletypewriter.
Speaker:James, meanwhile, grabbed the local newspaper from outside
Speaker:and began his search for the most ideal restaurant.
Speaker:There were already a plethora of choices that plagued his mind before he even opened the paper.
Speaker:By the time he reviewed the culinary section,
Speaker:he had already begun to circle a few locations
Speaker:that immediately grabbed his interests.
Speaker:Before he narrowed it down to the top three,
Speaker:Dixon had walked over
Speaker:and lightly tapped his shoulder.
Speaker:Dixon signed, “Turns out only one person is coming over this evening as the rest couldn’t make it.
Speaker:Her name is Linda Williams
Speaker:and she’s a lioness friend of mine.”
Speaker:“Great! I’m eager to meet her.
Speaker:How did you two become friends, by the way?
Speaker:You never told me a lot about Linda,”
Speaker:James asked. “We both attended the same residential school in Fremont.
Speaker:She’s like an older sister to me.
Speaker:Linda was in the grade above me, but we still became fast friends.”
Speaker:“A residential school?
Speaker:Is that some kind of private boarding school?”
Speaker:Dixon audibly laughed,
Speaker:“As if our hearing parents could ever afford something like that.
Speaker:It’s a school that houses and supports deaf students K through 12.
Speaker:The Fremont school is where I considered my true home.
Speaker:And after graduation,
Speaker:I still kept in touch with Linda and the others.”
Speaker:“Good to know! So, it will just be the three of us then?
Speaker:You, myself, and Linda?”
Speaker:“Yup, she’ll be wearing a cocktail dress.
Speaker:And she would probably like to attend somewhere more upscale.
Speaker:Her husband will drop her off here around four o’clock give or take.
Speaker:When she gets here.
Speaker:here... just don’t take it personally if she’s very straightforward with you.”
Speaker:James smirked, “Trust me,
Speaker:if I couldn’t handle it then I wouldn’t have cut it as an interpreter.
Speaker:I appreciate the warning though.”
Speaker:Dixon nodded and leaned down to give James a kiss before he left.
Speaker:James then returned his attention back to the newspaper.
Speaker:With a small party in mind,
Speaker:he narrowed it down to one location
Speaker:called the "Divine Café".
Speaker:The newspaper had adorned the establishment with many accolades for the year 1990.
Speaker:A photograph was attached to the article,
Speaker:it showcased the proud peacock owner.
Speaker:He stood with his arm crossed as the restaurant overshadowed him.
Speaker:James settled on the location
Speaker:and quickly called to establish a reservation.
Speaker:Once the evening slot was secured,
Speaker:he made sure Dixon got into his semi-formal attire before Linda’s arrival.
Speaker:With the stallion almost fully dressed,
Speaker:James found a large enough dress shirt that was stylish
Speaker:but not form fitting for Dixon's bulky body.
Speaker:It was twenty past four
Speaker:when the doorbell lights flickered inside the house.
Speaker:With Dixon fully dressed and ready,
Speaker:he answered the door while James followed behind.
Speaker:Once the door was open,
Speaker:Linda came in with a medium sized gift tucked underneath her left arm.
Speaker:Though the deaf lioness could still sign with one hand as she gave her warm flatteries to Dixon.
Speaker:Just as Dixon mentioned earlier, she arrived in a tasteful solid purple cocktail dress.
Speaker:The lioness had adorned herself with a thin gold necklace
Speaker:that complimented her emerald stud earrings.
Speaker:James walked over to her
Speaker:and gave his warm flatteries.
Speaker:“It’s nice to finally meet one of Dixon’s close friends.
Speaker:I’m James Johnson though
Speaker:Dixon calls me JJ.”
Speaker:He signed. Linda shook his hand before she signed,
Speaker:“I’m Linda Williams and it’s nice to meet you too!
Speaker:You must be one of Dixon’s hearing friends.
Speaker:How did the two of you meet?”
Speaker:Dixon flashed a concerned stare at James
Speaker:as the stallion realized
Speaker:they didn’t create a believable back story beforehand.
Speaker:However, James had already figured a question like Linda’s would come up eventually.
Speaker:Because of his professional training in dealing with highly stressful situations,
Speaker:he had honed the skills necessary to carefully navigate sensitive subjects.
Speaker:He replied with a confident expression,
Speaker:“Dixon was a former client of mine and we kept bumping into each other outside of work.
Speaker:We even attended the same gym by chance.
Speaker:So, I figured I would train with Dixon and get to know him.
Speaker:And we’ve known each other for
Speaker:about a year or so.”
Speaker:Dixon flashed him a warm smile
Speaker:as what James said was technically true.
Speaker:They had indeed bumped into each other
Speaker:outside of the alpine goat's work
Speaker:and the two had attended in the same gym.
Speaker:What James had left out, however,
Speaker:was how the two had initially came across each other at a gay bathhouse.
Speaker:Since then, they had been exclusively dating for the past year.
Speaker:He didn’t consider his story to be a lie.
Speaker:In his mind, he only revealed what was necessary for the conversation.
Speaker:Linda nodded, “Alright, fair enough.
Speaker:Though I have to ask,
Speaker:you wouldn’t happen to be a child of a deaf adult, would
Speaker:you? You’re way too skilled to just be an interpreter.”
Speaker:James smirked, “No, I don’t have any deaf parents or relatives.
Speaker:Though it does help that I have someone like Dixon to keep me from getting rusty.”
Speaker:Linda grinned, “Oh definitely,
Speaker:he’s always been hard on his interpreters.
Speaker:Glad you are keeping him on his toes, Dixon.”
Speaker:Dixon laughed as Linda continued,
Speaker:“I’m also going to make sure you cover the tab tonight.
Speaker:For the ridiculous rates you interpreters charge per hour, you must be loaded.”
Speaker:James’s ears folded over,
Speaker:“Training doesn’t come cheap you know?”
Speaker:“Well, consider it a hearing tax,”
Speaker:Linda winked. The three shared a small laugh before Linda handed Dixon his gift.
Speaker:To Dixon and James’s surprise,
Speaker:she had brought the stallion a large selection
Speaker:of sophisticated bar glasses for various alcoholic beverages.
Speaker:Dixon made a playful comment about whether the gifts were truly meant for him,
Speaker:or for Linda and all of his other deaf friends.
Speaker:Linda assured that they were in fact for him.
Speaker:She emphasized the need for the stallion to stop living the bachelor lifestyle
Speaker:and use the glasses whenever he brought home a date.
Speaker:The comment made James blush under his black and brown fur,
Speaker:his mind began to play out fantasies of the two of them together
Speaker:with a home cooked meal
Speaker:and elegant drinks in hand.
Speaker:The fantasy was short lived as James remembered
Speaker:they still had a dinner reservation to attend.
Speaker:Though the destination was only a few miles away,
Speaker:it would still take almost half an hour in stop and go traffic.
Speaker:James ushered Dixon and Linda outside
Speaker:so that they could climb into his silver sedan.
Speaker:He allowed the two to sit in the rear seats so that they could chat together unimpeded.
Speaker:James saw from the rearview mirror their conversations as he drove.
Speaker:Linda gave a brief summary of what had happened since she last visited Dixon.
Speaker:Her promotion a few months back allowed the lioness to take her family out on vacation.
Speaker:She also gave an update on what Dixon’s other deaf friends were up to
Speaker:back in Fremont. James
Speaker:simply enjoyed taking peaks and glimpses of the conversation
Speaker:before he turned his eyes back on the road.
Speaker:Excitement about the dinner date and birthday celebration made him squirm around in his seat.
Speaker:No matter the exorbitant cost,
Speaker:he was eager to lavish Dixon with an experience for everyone to remember.
Speaker:With just a few minutes to spare,
Speaker:the trio arrived at their destination.
Speaker:Like the newspaper had promised,
Speaker:the restaurant seemed
Speaker:widely popular and bustling.
Speaker:Luxurious cars were ushered into the parking garage by the valet
Speaker:as James pulled in line for parking.
Speaker:When it was his turn,
Speaker:he surrendered his simple Honda Accord to a few well-dressed valet mice.
Speaker:He left them a customary tip
Speaker:and guided Dixon and Linda inside.
Speaker:Most of the clientele wore semi-formal attire
Speaker:and tended to be paired up in couples.
Speaker:While this café wasn’t ultra-luxurious compared to other establishments that required suit jackets,
Speaker:it was clear from the outset that the normal visitors tended to be affluent predators.
Speaker:From James’s perspective,
Speaker:it seemed the clientele deemed the restaurant a great location
Speaker:for what they considered to be a casual dining experience.
Speaker:As the trio were led to their table by a deer waiter,
Speaker:James couldn’t help but notice a few of the predator patrons gave curious glances.
Speaker:Dixon and Linda were signing amongst themselves
Speaker:as they commented on the restaurant’s tasteful décor.
Speaker:James figured it was probably the patrons first experience seeing deaf people.
Speaker:He would sometimes receive those same stares from passersby whenever he was on an assignment.
Speaker:Though for tonight,
Speaker:the awkward stares wouldn’t deter him from enjoying himself.
Speaker:The three were quickly seated
Speaker:and James interpreted Dixon and Linda's drink orders before the deer waiter departed.
Speaker:Dixon immediately snacked on the bread provided on the table
Speaker:as Linda settled into the red velvet chair.
Speaker:She then looked over to James,
Speaker:“You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you something.
Speaker:What inspired you to learn sign language to begin with?
Speaker:And since you don’t have any deaf relatives,
Speaker:what made you interested in the interpreting profession?”
Speaker:James thought about the question for a moment
Speaker:before he signed,
Speaker:“Well, I grew up in a small town in the Florida panhandle as an only child.
Speaker:I had a deaf otter friend named Steve when I was around...
Speaker:five or six? We mostly gestured to each other
Speaker:but I remembered that we did use some basic signs.
Speaker:He was truly my first friend.
Speaker:Sadly, he moved away a year later and probably went to one of those residential schools.
Speaker:Still, my friendship with Steve had sparked my interest in learning more about sign language.
Speaker:After I finished high school,
Speaker:I joined a sign language club and took a few college classes.
Speaker:And that’s how I learned people can become interpreters for a living.
Speaker:So, I had the club help provide resources for me to transfer to a school here in 85. And after getting my Associates degree, I got certified in 88
Speaker:and found an agency here before settling down.
Speaker:down." Dixon raised an eyebrow, “Huh,
Speaker:you’re still full of surprises, JJ.
Speaker:I had no idea you lived in the south.
Speaker:You could’ve fooled me;
Speaker:your signing style reflects a west coast dialect more than a southern one.”
Speaker:James responded, “I simply didn’t learn real sign language until I studied here...
Speaker:the club and classes I attended in Florida only taught me how to fingerspell and use basic signs.
Speaker:I didn’t learn about the grammar part till much later.”
Speaker:Linda laughed, “Can’t say I’m surprised.
Speaker:Let me guess, they mostly had you signing in English, correct?”
Speaker:James nodded and Linda continued,
Speaker:“Figures, a lot of entry level colleges tend to be sloppy with their sign language courses.
Speaker:I’m glad you took the initiative and trained yourself to sign properly.
Speaker:Though, I was a bit worried that you joined the profession for the wrong reasons.
Speaker:But I’m glad that isn’t the case.”
Speaker:“The wrong reasons?
Speaker:Like doing it just for the money?”
Speaker:James asked. “Not exactly, but I’ve met a lot of new interpreters who joined the profession out of a sense of charity.
Speaker:You know the types, right Dixon?”
Speaker:Linda looked over to the stallion.
Speaker:“Oh yeah, I remembered during my first few job interviews, a mink interpreter tried to physically assist me around like I was physically handicapped or something,”
Speaker:Dixon snickered. “It’s especially worse if they’re the type that get inspired by feel good movies.
Speaker:They tend to be the most insufferable!”
Speaker:Linda puffed her feline lips.
Speaker:James nodded along,
Speaker:“Yeah, I’ve seen those types before.”
Speaker:“It’s like... it’s not so much that I need an interpreter because I’m helpless and refuse to learn English.
Speaker:I need one because everyone else refuses to use sign language with deaf people.
Speaker:That’s the key difference hearing people need to understand!”
Speaker:Linda responded. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement
Speaker:as the trio reviewed their menus.
Speaker:While the fresh table bread made for a pleasant snack,
Speaker:James looked forward to starting the night off with some savory appetizer dishes.
Speaker:Dixon and Linda shifted topics
Speaker:and discussed what would be the best option for their taste
Speaker:while James looked around for the waiters.
Speaker:The deer waiter from earlier frequently avoided their table at every opportunity.
Speaker:And the stares from the other predator patrons didn’t subside.
Speaker:In fact, the majority of them gave him unappreciated glares.
Speaker:He looked around to make sure there wasn’t another party that everyone stared at.
Speaker:But that hadn’t stopped the intensified leers from other predator animals.
Speaker:If only he could just get a damn waiter to take their orders already.
Speaker:Out of the corner of James’s eye,
Speaker:a large male peacock appeared from a small door that was next to the kitchen.
Speaker:The deer waiter leaned in to whisper to him
Speaker:and pointed at James’s group.
Speaker:The peacock nodded
Speaker:and vigorously approached them.
Speaker:“Pardon me for interrupting, but I need to ask everyone here to not use any obscene gestures.
Speaker:You’re making our guests very uncomfortable,”
Speaker:The peacock chimed with a fake smile.
Speaker:Dixon and Linda set aside their menus and glanced over to James
Speaker:to clarify what the peacock gentleman said.
Speaker:James told the two of them to wait so he could figure out what the problem was.
Speaker:James spoke, “I apologize but there must have been a misunderstanding.
Speaker:We are not here to make obscene gestures,
Speaker:rather I am communicating with my deaf dinner guests
Speaker:through sign language.”
Speaker:“Whatever you may call it, your table has received several complaints from other parties.
Speaker:If your table doesn’t cease with this nonsense then you will force me to ask your group to leave,”
Speaker:The peacock firmly said.
Speaker:James swallowed as sweat formed underneath his brow.
Speaker:He saw the concerned expressions painted on Linda and Dixon’s faces.
Speaker:The lioness signed to James
Speaker:and asked for clarification again.
Speaker:James signed back
Speaker:and gave them a brief summary about what was said to them.
Speaker:The peacock was displeased by the sight,
Speaker:his large feathers flared above all three dinner guests
Speaker:and casted a shadow over them.
Speaker:“Since you are not complying with my request, I am now asking your party to vacate the premises!”
Speaker:The peacock raised his voice.
Speaker:James turned around and stood up,
Speaker:“I beg of you, we can move to another table out of sight!
Speaker:We are not here to make a scene!”
Speaker:“Enough, I will have none of it!
Speaker:If you refuse to leave in two minutes, then I will summon the authorities! Now,
Speaker:get out!” The peacock pointed
Speaker:at the front entrance.
Speaker:The room became silent,
Speaker:everyone viewed the scene from afar.
Speaker:James simply looked down,
Speaker:too ashamed and embarrassed to argue any further.
Speaker:His posture was hunched over as the utter shame and humiliation embedded into his body.
Speaker:After a few seconds he turned to his group
Speaker:and told them they needed to leave.
Speaker:Even though they weren’t keen on the entire conversation,
Speaker:they implicitly understood what transpired.
Speaker:Linda kept her head held high
Speaker:and avoided making eye contact with everyone else in the room.
Speaker:Dixon, on the other hand, spat up the rest of his bread onto a cloth napkin
Speaker:before he threw it on the table.
Speaker:The stallion glared at the peacock owner for a few seconds
Speaker:before he joined the group
Speaker:as they made their way toward the exit.
Speaker:James kept his head down as the group made their way outside.
Speaker:Once the front door was slammed shut behind them,
Speaker:tears welled up in the alpine goat’s eyes.
Speaker:Before long, they rolled down the sides of James’s cheek.
Speaker:His nose ran as he sobbed quietly.
Speaker:It had been years since he had broken down like this.
Speaker:He was used to getting unkind comments, hostile glares, and general disapproval from his work in the field.
Speaker:But to be kicked out from an establishment on Dixon’s birthday and unable to do anything about it had broken him.
Speaker:He felt Dixon’s large warm hands
Speaker:gently stroke his shoulders and backside before the stallion pulled him in for a hug.
Speaker:The alpine goat took a few deep breaths
Speaker:and tried to control his breathing.
Speaker:He tightly held onto Dixon;
Speaker:the stallion’s muscular body shielded them from the cold wind.
Speaker:James wished he could reside in his lover’s arms just a bit longer.
Speaker:Though when he realized that Linda still only stood a few feet from them,
Speaker:the alpine goat gently released himself from the hug.
Speaker:He wiped the sides of his cheeks with his arm
Speaker:and looked up to the two of them.
Speaker:“I’m so sorry for everything, tonight,”
Speaker:James sniffled. “It’s not your fault.
Speaker:If that restaurant doesn’t want our money, then I say fuck them.”
Speaker:Linda signed. “She’s right,
Speaker:you have nothing to apologize for.
Speaker:You’re not the one responsible for getting us kicked out.”
Speaker:Dixon said. “I just wanted us to have a good time!
Speaker:If I could have explained it better or found us a different table.” James was
Speaker:stopped by Dixon. “It wouldn’t matter,
Speaker:there’s no point in dealing with people like them.
Speaker:We can find someplace else to spend the night,
Speaker:we’ll be okay.” Dixon tapped his shoulder.
Speaker:Linda chimed in, “We have our ways in dealing with establishments like this one.
Speaker:They may not see retribution today, but word tends to spread fast in the deaf community.
Speaker:Trust us, Dixon and I will deal with them another time.”
Speaker:James nodded and after a few minutes he calmed himself down.
Speaker:His breathing returned to normal
Speaker:as the trio waited for the valet to retrieve James’s car.
Speaker:Despite how the evening had unfolded,
Speaker:he still gave the valet another tip
Speaker:as they hadn’t been responsible for what transpired.
Speaker:Once everyone climbed back into the sedan,
Speaker:he quickly merged into the evening traffic.
Speaker:Everyone agreed to allow Dixon to choose where to eat next.
Speaker:The stallion probably had a better idea what places were deaf friendly
Speaker:and would accommodate them for the night.
Speaker:He gave the alpine goat directions to follow but
Speaker:didn’t specify the name of the restaurant.
Speaker:After a few minutes on the road,
Speaker:the group parked next to a large brick wall building.
Speaker:Dixon noticed Linda and James’s puzzled gaze at the establishment,
Speaker:but he quickly reassured them
Speaker:that this American diner had meals and recipes for all species.
Speaker:He had frequented the place during his lunch hour
Speaker:and would chat with the rhino owner Enzo.
Speaker:Satisfied with the explanation,
Speaker:the group followed Dixon’s lead;
Speaker:Afterall it was still his birthday after all.
Speaker:Inside the diner was sparsely occupied,
Speaker:a mix of inter species couples dotted the tables.
Speaker:A bulky colored TV
Speaker:hung above the corner of the dinner countertop for everyone to watch the sports game.
Speaker:Before the wolf waiter could guide the party to the countertop table,
Speaker:a large heavy-set rhino spotted Dixon from the kitchen and rushed over.
Speaker:Enzo lunged for a hug
Speaker:and kissed both of Dixon’s cheeks. “Dixon, my boy, good to see you again.
Speaker:Who are your friends?”
Speaker:Enzo looked behind Dixon.
Speaker:“I’m James and this lovely lioness here is Linda.
Speaker:We came into town so we can celebrate Dixon’s birthday today,”
Speaker:James explained as Linda waved to the rhino.
Speaker:"No foolin’, today’s your birthday?" Enzo looked to Dixon.
Speaker:The stallion could make out some of the words and knew that Enzo asked him a question about his birthday.
Speaker:Dixon nodded and Enzo grinned widely.
Speaker:The rhino brought up his bulky hands and signed,
Speaker:“Happy birthday!” Dixon’s face blushed a deep rose red
Speaker:and repeatedly signed his thanks.
Speaker:James could tell that Enzo was a very novice signer
Speaker:but the sentiment was there.
Speaker:“I learned that from a college kid that swung by.
Speaker:Come, let me get you guys settled in!”
Speaker:Enzo spoke. The trio sat by the countertop which allowed them access to a nice window view of the evening nightlife.
Speaker:Even as Enzo provided them menus,
Speaker:the rhino went on a tangent
Speaker:about how he first met Dixon.
Speaker:He explained how his restaurant had struggled in its first year
Speaker:and needed a stable customer base.
Speaker:It had been thanks to Dixon’s word of mouth that a large portion of his construction crew colleagues
Speaker:had frequented the restaurant
Speaker:and in turn saved it from being closed down.
Speaker:All the while, James had to interpret for Dixon and Linda.
Speaker:“I tell you, the first day this man came in, he ordered everything off the menu.
Speaker:He was a beast!”
Speaker:Enzo said. Dixon signed back,
Speaker:“I had worked a thirty-five hour shift that day.
Speaker:I burned through my lunch and by the end of my shift I was starving.”
Speaker:Linda interjected,
Speaker:“Definitely sounds like something Dixon would do.
Speaker:One time in middle school, he ate the entire school’s potluck.
Speaker:Found him fast asleep in the school’s kitchen.”
Speaker:“You’re never going to let me live that down, will you?”
Speaker:Dixon asked. "Nope,
Speaker:I spent all day making that chili for everyone and you ate it!
Speaker:I will make sure everyone knows about it for as long as I live!"
Speaker:Linda giggled. “Can you blame him?
Speaker:He was a growing boy and look how he turned out! He’s a giant!”
Speaker:Enzo tapped Dixon’s shoulder, before he continued,
Speaker:“Anyway, I’ll let you guys take a look over the menu.
Speaker:And Dixon, that banana sundae you always get after a meal?
Speaker:That’s on me! Consider it a gift from yours truly!”
Speaker:“Thank you! Just happy to be here!”
Speaker:Dixon responded. Enzo left the group and bussed the other empty tables to prepare for the dinner rush.
Speaker:After the trio placed their orders with a different waiter,
Speaker:Linda excused herself to use the bathroom.
Speaker:With the lioness gone,
Speaker:the stallion rubbed his left leg against James’s from under the table to get his boyfriend’s attention.
Speaker:“Feeling better, JJ?” Dixon signed.
Speaker:“Yeah, sorry for crying earlier.
Speaker:Didn’t mean to embarrass you in front of your friend.
Speaker:I just wanted us to have a nice evening.”
Speaker:“You didn’t embarrass me.
Speaker:The only one who should be embarrassed was that peacock dickhead of an owner.
Speaker:You did your best.
Speaker:All that matters is that you’re here.
Speaker:So long as I have you,
Speaker:I’ll never have a bad evening.”
Speaker:Dixon turned his head from side to side
Speaker:and checked his surroundings.
Speaker:None of the guests who were present sat facing their direction.
Speaker:And Enzo, meanwhile, continued bussing the tables in another corner of the establishment.
Speaker:Dixon gently lifted James’s chin up with his left hand
Speaker:and grazed the alpine goat’s cheek.
Speaker:He leaned forward
Speaker:and planted a firm slow kiss on his lover’s lips.
Speaker:James’s heart clenched up,
Speaker:partly out of fear
Speaker:but mainly out of the excitement.
Speaker:To be kissed in such a public manner
Speaker:made each individual fur strand perked up.
Speaker:It lingered for a few seconds before Dixon pulled away.
Speaker:The stallion gave another gentle touch to James’s cheek
Speaker:before he turned forward again.
Speaker:After a few minutes,
Speaker:Linda returned to her seat
Speaker:and saw the two of them leaned close together.
Speaker:She gave Dixon a hug from behind before she took her seat beside them.
Speaker:Dixon reached over to drink his beverage
Speaker:as Linda waved to the both of them to get their attention.
Speaker:“So, how long have you two been dating?”
Speaker:Linda asked. Water streamed out from Dixon’s nostrils as he heavily coughed.
Speaker:While James was just as stunned by the question,
Speaker:Dixon was the most caught off guard.
Speaker:The stallion grabbed a nearby napkin to wipe his face
Speaker:and cleared his nostrils.
Speaker:After they were resupplied with many napkins later,
Speaker:Dixon had fully cleaned himself up and faced Linda,
Speaker:“Why would you ask that?”
Speaker:“At first, I thought there was something more going on when you two hugged earlier.
Speaker:But judging by both of your reactions, I say I was right on the mark.”
Speaker:Linda responded. “Linda... I...
Speaker:it’s hard to come forth with something like this, you know?
Speaker:I was afraid of... what you would think of me,”
Speaker:Dixon admitted. Linda continued,
Speaker:“Dixon, we’ve known each other since childhood.
Speaker:You’re my best friend and nothing will ever change that.
Speaker:And if being in a gay relationship makes you happy, then I fully support it!
Speaker:You think I wouldn’t accept that part of you?”
Speaker:Dixon fidgeted for a moment,
Speaker:“I don’t know, it’s just been difficult to come out to other people.
Speaker:It does make me happy to know you accept me for who I am. But...
Speaker:could you keep this just between the three of us?
Speaker:At least until I’m ready to be open with the rest of our deaf friends.”
Speaker:“Of course, only on your terms.
Speaker:You will always have my support.
Speaker:And by the way!” Linda looked over to James
Speaker:and flashed her fangs with a sly smile,
Speaker:“You better treat my stallion right, understand?
Speaker:And you’re still paying for all of us tonight!”
Speaker:James smirked, “I see you still haven’t forgotten about that.
Speaker:But don’t worry, I’ll make sure Dixon is taken care of!”
Speaker:The lioness gave a nod of approval before she settled back in her seat.
Speaker:Knowing they could be true to themselves
Speaker:around a trusted friend
Speaker:had eased the tension for the rest of the night.
Speaker:The group’s attention suddenly turned towards the kitchen
Speaker:as they saw steaming hot plates billowed from the countertop.
Speaker:Enzo carried their food over to Dixon’s group
Speaker:and presented them their meals.
Speaker:The portions were plentiful and the meal was made with fresh ingredients.
Speaker:Every unique aroma of spices that came from the vegan burger
Speaker:made James’s stomach seized up with excitement.
Speaker:Dixon had ordered a similar burger while Linda requested Cajun shrimp pasta.
Speaker:Enzo’s toothy smile was plastered proudly on his face
Speaker:as the trio savored their dishes.
Speaker:James quickly understood why Dixon had brought them to this specific diner while they ate.
Speaker:The three quietly indulged in their meals for the rest of the night,
Speaker:satisfied by the taste
Speaker:and generous portions.
Speaker:After they finished,
Speaker:Enzo then brought out the banana sundae
Speaker:with three shiny spoons impaled in the dessert.
Speaker:"So, how was it? Good I hope?"
Speaker:Enzo asked. All three gave an excited nod
Speaker:with the sundae presented before them.
Speaker:Dixon softly nudged James
Speaker:with his hooved foot
Speaker:and flashed him a bright smile,
Speaker:one that would forever be imprinted
Speaker:in the goat’s memories.
Speaker:As James interpreted,
Speaker:Dixon turned to Enzo and proclaimed,
Speaker:“It was truly a fantastic feast!”
Speaker:This was “Fantastic Feast”
