Shownotes

Have you ever listened to a podcast, read a book, or had a conversation that unexpectedly left you feeling anxious, emotional, or overwhelmed? Maybe your first thought was, "Why am I still getting triggered?" or "Shouldn't I be further along by now?"

If so, this week's Tammy's Takes is for you.

Inspired by my conversation with Rachel, I wanted to remind you of something we often forget: healing isn't a competition, and your nervous system sets the pace. Every person's journey is different, and comparing your healing to someone else's only creates more pressure, shame, and self-judgment.

In this episode, I share one of my favorite tools that I teach coaching clients: Notice. Name. Need. Instead of criticizing yourself for having a strong emotional reaction, you'll learn how to become curious about what your body is trying to communicate. We'll explore why healing isn't just an intellectual process, why your nervous system responds before your mind can explain what's happening, and how listening to yourself instead of pushing yourself is one of the greatest acts of self-trust.

Most adult children grew up learning to ignore their own needs while focusing on everyone else's. Healing asks us to reverse that pattern—not by forcing ourselves to process everything at once, but by learning to pause, notice what's happening inside of us, and respond with compassion instead of criticism.

If you've ever felt like you're falling behind in your healing journey, I hope this episode reminds you that you are not behind. You're exactly where you need to be. Healing doesn't happen by rushing through your pain. It happens one safe moment, one small act of self-awareness, and one compassionate choice at a time.

Speaker:

hello everybody, and welcome back to

Tammy's Takes, where we take powerful

2

:

conversations with our guests and

turn them into practical strategies

3

:

you can use right here, right now.

4

:

So I wanna go back to yesterday's episode

with Rachel, because honestly, I wanted to

5

:

preemptively go back and proactively put a

little bit of a trigger warning in there.

6

:

Because I realized in listening to

her tone and listening to her talk,

7

:

and just listening to some of the

tough conversations that we had,

8

:

we talked about trauma, we talked

about PTSD, we talked about some

9

:

of the healing modalities for PTSD.

10

:

And honestly, we talked about some

pretty difficult childhood experiences.

11

:

And I know that depending on where

you are in your journey, parts of that

12

:

might have been a little uncomfortable.

13

:

So I never want anybody listening to this

podcast to feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

14

:

That is absolutely never my intention.

15

:

So know this, and know this

with all the love in my heart.

16

:

If an episode ever feels like too much,

please give yourself permission to pause

17

:

it, turn it off, come back when you're

ready, or never come back at all to it.

18

:

It's okay.

19

:

But I also want to encourage you

to get curious about what came up.

20

:

So what did you feel?

21

:

What did…

22

:

Where did you feel it in your body?

23

:

What was it about the

conversation that affected you?

24

:

And if you need support honestly

figuring that out and exploring

25

:

those feelings, reach out to me.

26

:

You don't have to figure

it out all by yourself.

27

:

Because here's what I really

want you to understand today.

28

:

Everybody is at a different place in

their healing journey, and that's okay.

29

:

You are exactly where you are

supposed to be at the time.

30

:

We talked about it in many of my

podcasts how healing undoes itself,

31

:

and it unravels itself in layers.

32

:

And I truly believe it's when your God,

my God, whatever, your higher power,

33

:

whatever it is, the universe, whatever

you wanna call it, my friends, I believe

34

:

that it unravels these layers as we're

ready to deal with them So your healing

35

:

doesn't need to look like Rachel's, it

doesn't need to look like mine, and it

36

:

doesn't need to look like somebody else's.

37

:

Healing isn't a race.

38

:

Your nervous system sets

the pace of your healing.

39

:

So today I wanna teach you a really

simple way to start listening

40

:

to what your reactions might

actually be trying to tell you.

41

:

I call it notice, name, need.

42

:

But first, let's talk

about why it matters.

43

:

You heard me just say before,

your nervous system sets the pace.

44

:

One of the things I teach over

and over again is that healing is

45

:

not just an intellectual process.

46

:

You can understand it intellectually

all … No matter how you look at it,

47

:

you can know exactly what happened to

you, you can know why your behavior

48

:

is the way it is, you can know why

your parents behaved the way they did.

49

:

You can read every book, you can listen

to every podcast, you can go to therapy,

50

:

you can learn all the big fancy words that

we use, but your body is still reacting.

51

:

Because understanding something

and feeling safe with something

52

:

are not necessarily the same thing.

53

:

This is especially important for

adult children of dysfunction, because

54

:

everything in their world stems around

safety, and a lot of us became really

55

:

good, honestly, at overriding ourselves.

56

:

We learned to abandon ourselves.

57

:

We learned to not cry.

58

:

We learned that we shouldn't

make things w- worse.

59

:

We learned that we

shouldn't be too sensitive.

60

:

And then something really

interesting happens.

61

:

We start healing, but we bring that

exact mentality into our healing.

62

:

So you ask yourself, "Why

am I still triggered?

63

:

Why can't I talk about this yet?"

64

:

Rachel can talk openly about her trauma.

65

:

Why can't I?

66

:

These are the things you

start asking yourself.

67

:

Or you might even give yourself a time

limit "I've been doing this for two years.

68

:

I should be further along."

69

:

Do you hear what you're doing to yourself?

70

:

You're literally putting your sa-

that same pressure on yourself.

71

:

You're just putting a healing label

on it, but it's still pressure

72

:

no matter how you look at it.

73

:

Healing was never supposed to become one

more thing you have to be perfect at.

74

:

So take your reaction that you

got and use it as information.

75

:

So if you are triggered by something

that somebody says, I want you to start

76

:

asking yourself, instead of saying,

"Why am I still triggered by this?"

77

:

and frustrating yourself and starting to

go down that shame spiral, ask yourself

78

:

what the reaction is trying to tell you.

79

:

It's a very different question.

80

:

One comes from judgment, the

other comes from curiosity.

81

:

How many times have you heard me talk

about how when you come at things

82

:

with curiosity, you soften them?

83

:

Honestly, curiosity is one of the most

powerful tools you can use in healing.

84

:

Let's say you're listening to a

podcast, like my conversation with

85

:

Rachel, and suddenly you notice that

you're feeling a little uncomfortable.

86

:

You don't necessarily know why.

87

:

Don't immediately go into the story.

88

:

Don't try to tell yourself why.

89

:

Just start with your body.

90

:

What happened with your

body physiologically?

91

:

Did your jaw tighten?

92

:

Did your shoulders come up?

93

:

Did your breathing change?

94

:

Is there pressure in your chest?

95

:

A knot in your stomach?

96

:

Does it suddenly feel like

you're irritated or anxious, or

97

:

you wanna crack your knuckles?

98

:

What happened?

99

:

Because physiologically, something

is going to happen, right?

100

:

Just notice it.

101

:

Just notice it and be aware of it.

102

:

And you do not need to figure out,

and this is very important, because

103

:

a lot of the exercises we do say

go back and figure out when you

104

:

first felt this feeling, right?

105

:

You don't have to immediately figure

out what childhood experience caused it.

106

:

Because then we're just turning

awareness into another investigation.

107

:

We're turning it into another task,

another chore, and more pressure.

108

:

Because then you start thinking to

yourself, "I have to figure this out.

109

:

I wanna know where this comes from.

110

:

I have to fix this."

111

:

No.

112

:

Sometimes awareness is simply something

in me is reacting to this right now.

113

:

And if you are okay with that,

that's enough information.

114

:

So here's the tool I want

you to practice, okay?

115

:

Three words.

116

:

It's very simple.

117

:

Notice, name, need.

118

:

First, notice it.

119

:

What's happening in my body right now?

120

:

We talked about all those different

sensations you could have.

121

:

Your stomach, your

shoulders, you feel restless.

122

:

You wanna leave, you wanna get

up and move, you wanna turn that

123

:

podcast off, whatever it is.

124

:

Don't judge it, don't

fix it, just notice it.

125

:

Then name it.

126

:

Just give it a name.

127

:

What might I be feeling?

128

:

Is it fear?

129

:

Is it sadness?

130

:

Is it anger?

131

:

Shame?

132

:

Overwhelm?

133

:

Rejection?

134

:

Maybe you feel powerless to

fix what's going on right now.

135

:

Or maybe honestly, you might

have absolutely no idea.

136

:

That's okay.

137

:

Just simply name it.

138

:

Something feels activated in

me right now, and I feel blank.

139

:

And the last step is need.

140

:

What do you need right now?

141

:

This is the part that so many adult

children struggle with, because we've

142

:

spent so much of our time asking

ourselves, what does everybody else need?

143

:

Instead, I want you to ask

yourself, what do I need right now?

144

:

Maybe you need to pause.

145

:

Maybe you need to talk to someone.

146

:

Maybe you need to take a walk.

147

:

Maybe you need to put both feet on

the ground and look around the room.

148

:

Ground yourself.

149

:

Do something to calm yourself.

150

:

Maybe you need a few short breaths.

151

:

Guys, we could go over and over all

of the things that you could possibly

152

:

do to calm yourself in that moment,

but it's ultimately what you need.

153

:

I can't tell you what n- you need.

154

:

Only you know what you need.

155

:

And I truly believe, and you've

heard me say this 1,000 times

156

:

if you've been listening to this

show, you were born all-knowing.

157

:

You were born with this divine knowledge

of everything you need, everything

158

:

you want, everything you desire.

159

:

You have it all inside of you.

160

:

So maybe- You just need to

remind yourself, "I'm here.

161

:

That was then.

162

:

This is now."

163

:

Who knows?

164

:

Maybe you need to turn off the podcast.

165

:

Name what you need, and then honor

yourself in giving yourself what you need.

166

:

Do not judge yourself for stopping

or for doing something different.

167

:

Because honestly, stopping and doing

something different is self-trust.

168

:

It's telling yourself, "I don't

need to hear this right now."

169

:

You noticed yourself, you

listened, you responded.

170

:

For someone who might have spent

decades ignoring their own needs,

171

:

this is actually a big deal.

172

:

Sometimes healing doesn't

mean going deeper right now.,

173

:

We're all at a different

level of our healing.

174

:

I think sometimes we actually turn healing

into endurance, so it's another fight.

175

:

It's another, struggle, another battle,

176

:

so you wanna know "How much can I cover?

177

:

How deep can I go?

178

:

How much can I process?

179

:

How much trauma can I talk

about without reacting?"

180

:

But that's not always

automatically better.

181

:

Sometimes the next step is

just creating more safety.

182

:

So it's in making that safety bubble

that I talk about a little bigger,

183

:

sometimes that little safety

bubble means getting enough

184

:

sleep so you wake up rested.

185

:

Sometimes it means nourishing your

body so that you feel healthy.

186

:

Sometimes it means moving, setting a

boundary, saying no, calling someone

187

:

safe, talking for five minutes

without doing anything productive Not

188

:

explaining yourself, leaving the room.

189

:

These are all things that

can make yourself feel safe.

190

:

But every time you do one of

them, you're teaching yourself,

191

:

"I'm listening to me now."

192

:

And that's how self-trust

starts to rebuild.

193

:

Not through one giant breakthrough,

and we've said this before many

194

:

times, but through hundreds of

little moments when you notice

195

:

yourself and respond differently.

196

:

But I think the big message

that I'm trying to get out here

197

:

today is that you can't compare

your healing to someone else's.

198

:

Rachel has been working

on her healing for years.

199

:

Someone listening to that conversation

might have just realized, "Oh my gosh,

200

:

my childhood actually affected me."

201

:

Maybe you're at the very beginning.

202

:

These two people are not

supposed to be in the same place.

203

:

You're exactly where you

need to be right now.

204

:

Maybe you're just starting

to recognize your patterns of

205

:

people-pleasing, the perfectionism,

the hypervigilance, the issues with

206

:

self-trust, the reading the room.

207

:

All these things that we mention and

we throw out there over and over again.

208

:

Maybe you're at that part in your

journey where you're just now starting

209

:

to realize, "Oh my God, this is me."

210

:

And suddenly you're looking back at your

life and you're thinking to yourself,

211

:

"Oh my gosh, this makes so much sense."

212

:

That feeling can be so assuring

that you're finally figuring it out,

213

:

but can also be very overwhelming.

214

:

So please remember, you don't have to fix

everything … that you become aware of.

215

:

You don't.

216

:

Awareness comes before change.

217

:

Sometimes today's healing is

simply noticing, "Ah, I do that."

218

:

That's it.

219

:

You don't have to solve

it before it's dinner.

220

:

So this week I want you

to practice something.

221

:

When you notice yourself having a

strong reaction to something, don't

222

:

immediately try to make it disappear,

and don't judge yourself for having it.

223

:

Practice the- three

things that I mentioned.

224

:

Notice what is happening in my body.

225

:

Name what might I be feeling and need.

226

:

What do I need right now?

227

:

And then whenever possible,

honor the answers you get

228

:

because every time you do that, you're

sending yourself a different message.

229

:

Instead of your feelings are

inconvenient, you're saying to

230

:

the, yourself, "I'm listening.

231

:

I got you.

232

:

I'm here for you."

233

:

Instead of saying, "Get over it," you're

saying, "We got this together, my friend."

234

:

And instead of asking yourself,

"Why aren't I further along

235

:

in my healing journey?"

236

:

remind yourself, "We'll all go at

our own pace, and I'm exactly where

237

:

I need to be right here right now."

238

:

Like I said, your healing doesn't

have to look like Rachel's, and it

239

:

certainly doesn't have to look like mine.

240

:

Your job isn't to heal the

fastest, your job is to learn

241

:

how to heal yourself again.

242

:

And whatever you are in that process

today, that's where we start.

243

:

So if this Tammy's Takes resonated with

you, please follow or subscribe to The

244

:

Adult Child of Dysfunction and share

this episode with someone who might need

245

:

permission to heal at their own pace.

246

:

And if you're ready to go a little

deeper into understanding the patterns

247

:

your childhood trauma might have left

you behind with, you can check out my

248

:

course at tammievincent.com/course.

249

:

Right now, I am giving 90% off with the

code THRIVE25 because I truly believe

250

:

we all start somewhere, and today

might just be the day that you start.

251

:

You do not have to force

healing, my friends.

252

:

You can listen your way through it, and

it can take you the rest of your life.

253

:

It is a journey, … It

is not an A to Z path.

254

:

It is a journey, and I would love

to take that journey with you.

255

:

Right now, all I want you to know

though is that you are safe, you are

256

:

loved, and I welcome you back anytime.

257

:

So thank you so much, you guys.

258

:

Have a blessed day,

and we'll see you back.
