Speaker:

Hey, everybody.

2

:

Welcome to Sunday's edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

You are listening to just one

of us today because pastor

4

:

Rod's out as I'm recording this.

5

:

And in fact, he's going to

be out for like the next.

6

:

I don't know however many days, but

over two weeks, he's, he's taking

7

:

some time off with his family.

8

:

He'll be at church today, but, uh,

on Saturday as I'm recording this, he

9

:

had some time with one of his sons.

10

:

And so, uh, I'm here and I'm with you.

11

:

And we are back in God's word.

12

:

Second Kings 19 Psalm 46,

Psalm 80 and Psalm 1 35.

13

:

So we've got quite a bit, quite

a bit in front of us here.

14

:

Uh, this, uh, this morning at

church, we are blessed to be inside.

15

:

And we reminded of that this week

because we were almost outside

16

:

and that would have been okay too.

17

:

But as God would have

it, he worked things out.

18

:

The school was doing some work on the

gymnasium floor and there were some.

19

:

Uh, communication.

20

:

Uh, things that just needed to be

smoothed out, but we were almost

21

:

sitting up our chairs outside.

22

:

And having church outside, which we

could do, we would be able to do that.

23

:

We'd have church.

24

:

We'd be a little bit uncomfortable, I

guess, more so than we normally are.

25

:

But we would still do it.

26

:

And by God's grace, we

don't have to do that.

27

:

So.

28

:

Uh, as you walk into church this morning,

if you're listening to this before you

29

:

leave, or if you're already been to church

this morning, Uh, maybe stop in and give.

30

:

Thanks.

31

:

Just thank God for the indoors.

32

:

Thank God for the air conditioning.

33

:

Thank God for the chairs that we have

and the sound equipment, just all

34

:

the blessings that we get to enjoy

on a regular basis for church that

35

:

we just take for granted, because.

36

:

We don't know any different.

37

:

And it's only when that is threatened

to be removed from us, that we sit

38

:

there and we go, oh man, that's right.

39

:

These things are nice to have.

40

:

I remember.

41

:

Being in, in California for COVID.

42

:

Uh, where we were outside for

a little while doing church, we

43

:

weren't doing church outside.

44

:

And I remember the first time we

moved back inside, just how thankful

45

:

I was to hear the voices of the saints

around me singing and worshiping God.

46

:

And that was something that we didn't get

outside because it's, it's outside there.

47

:

You don't have the.

48

:

The same acoustics and everything else.

49

:

So it was so cool to be

reminded of something so simple.

50

:

As corporate worship and

what a blessing it is.

51

:

So hopefully you appreciate those

blessings this morning, whether you're

52

:

on your way, or you've already been to

church that you can have a moment to just

53

:

stop down and thank God for the body of

Christ and in what it is that we get to

54

:

do in the place that we get to do it.

55

:

And it's pretty cool.

56

:

It's great.

57

:

It's awesome.

58

:

God's provision is super.

59

:

Uh, super abundant for us in so

many different ways when it comes

60

:

to where we meet in the school

and the classrooms that we get to

61

:

use, just so many awesome things.

62

:

So praise God for that.

63

:

Let's jump into our text for this morning.

64

:

All right.

65

:

So second Kings chapter 19 second, Kings

19 is a parallel again, of, of so much

66

:

of what we've seen already in Isaiah.

67

:

Uh, 36 and 37.

68

:

You've got a situation where, uh, the

people of Israel are under distress

69

:

from Sennacherib and the Assyrians.

70

:

And I say, Isaiah is brought

in and he prophesies and

71

:

says, don't worry, don't fear.

72

:

Don't be afraid because the

Lord is going to deliver you.

73

:

He's going to take care of his people.

74

:

This is verses six and

seven in chapter 19, but.

75

:

Uh, in the meantime, Sennacherib is

going to store up more RAF for himself.

76

:

If I can put it that way

versus eight through 13, he

77

:

he's going to send a letter.

78

:

So Sennacherib is going to send a letter

instead of having the wrap Shakka,

79

:

just stand there and, and taunt the

Israelites he's going to send this letter.

80

:

Well, has a Kaia takes the letter?

81

:

And spreads it out before the Lord.

82

:

And he prays, he seeks the Lord.

83

:

Just like we talked about that in the,

the, our treatment of Isaiah 36 and 37.

84

:

That's such a good response for the

believer when the believer walks

85

:

through a valley, when the believers

up against a trial, it's so good

86

:

for us to go to the Lord in prayer.

87

:

Now, earlier this week on a Wednesday.

88

:

I got a notice that said, Hey.

89

:

Uh, you know what we are, uh,

are not going to be able to

90

:

use the gymnasium on Sunday.

91

:

Like I was talking about earlier

and that's a minor trial that's.

92

:

Way, way, way, way more, uh,

small in comparison to what

93

:

Isaiah was going through or has

a keyer was going through rather.

94

:

But the response needed to be the

same, rather than pull myself up by

95

:

my bootstraps and think about what we

can do and how I can handle it myself.

96

:

Oh, man.

97

:

I needed to go to the Lord and say, Lord.

98

:

You're in control of this and you

know, where our heart is, you know,

99

:

what our desire is, you know, what,

what our preferences, what would be

100

:

better for our people would be to be

inside and not outside where there's

101

:

distractions and heat and weather

and elements and everything else.

102

:

But I needed to go to the Lord in prayer

on that, and not first turned to myself.

103

:

And so often.

104

:

I think we're, we're more

prone to turn to ourselves.

105

:

And to say, okay, how do I

get myself out of the spot?

106

:

Well, it has a, Kai's a great example

because his, the guy goes to the Lord.

107

:

And he prays and in response.

108

:

Isaiah shows up and Isaiah prophesies,

the fall of And so in this prophecy

109

:

Sennacherib is confronted for his pride

and his arrogance and taunting the Lord.

110

:

And reminded that, Hey, you know what.

111

:

Verse 25.

112

:

I'm the one that determined this long ago.

113

:

In other words, God did this.

114

:

I plant from days of old.

115

:

What I now bring to pass.

116

:

Like we talked about in a yesterday's

episode of the episode before the

117

:

Lord brings calamity even to pass.

118

:

And so here again, that concept that yes.

119

:

Yeah.

120

:

Sennacherib, you've done a lot and, and

you've conquered a lot of peoples, but

121

:

don't forget that it was, it was me.

122

:

It was the Lord.

123

:

It was y'all wait, I'm the one

that ordained all these things.

124

:

You've raged against me, verse 28 and

your complacency has come to my ears.

125

:

And so I'm gonna put my hook in

your nose and my bitten, your mouth.

126

:

And I'm going to return you

by the way, in which you came.

127

:

Uh, and, and then he shifts in here

and he talks about this remnant.

128

:

That's going to go out of Mount

Zion, a band of survivors.

129

:

The zeal of the Lord will do this.

130

:

Is that future is that.

131

:

Is that distant future near future?

132

:

What w what was that for Hezekiah?

133

:

The answer is yes.

134

:

I mean, it was.

135

:

Literally a remnant was going to

come out from the siege of Jerusalem.

136

:

When the Assyrians left.

137

:

Do you remember the story there?

138

:

Uh, the angel, the Lord

strikes down 185,000.

139

:

But lepers go out.

140

:

They find the food.

141

:

They say, we should tell

other people about this.

142

:

And so they go back and, and

people flood out of the city and,

143

:

and they, they take the ransom.

144

:

They take the, the booty, the spoil

of, uh, of the Assyrians who had fled.

145

:

And so, yes, there's a near

term fulfillment for Isaiah,

146

:

uh, or second Kings, 1931.

147

:

But there's also that, that future.

148

:

And he's talking about the, the

remnant that's going to come back

149

:

from exile, but then ultimately

the remnant that's going to be re

150

:

gathered in the millennial kingdom.

151

:

And so.

152

:

Again, as we're studying this period

in Israel's history, it's important

153

:

that we keep in mind all of these

different layers going on here.

154

:

There's multiple times.

155

:

There's multiple fulfillments.

156

:

There's multiple scenes

that are happening here.

157

:

And sometimes you get those all working

ogether like in second Kings,:

158

:

Uh, verse 34, I will defend this

city to save it for my own sake,

159

:

for the sake of my servant, David.

160

:

Uh, that that is David, the, uh,

the original Davidic king David,

161

:

and then also the Davidic line that

would ultimately terminate and, and

162

:

culminate rather in the Messiah, in

the, the ultimate David in Jesus.

163

:

And so for the sake of the Davidic

line for the sake of the Davidic

164

:

covenant, He wasn't going to turn

Jerusalem over to, uh, Syria verse 35.

165

:

We read about the ultimate

downfall of the Assyrian army.

166

:

There.

167

:

So that's second Kings 19.

168

:

Now we get into the Psalms and as we get

into these Psalms, again, we don't have

169

:

anything contextually that says this

was written during the time of Hezekiah,

170

:

or this was written during the time

when a Syria was proceeding the city.

171

:

But there are quite a few just

contextual markers here that

172

:

at least fit that timeframe.

173

:

So some 46 is a, an amazing Psalm

praising the strength of God.

174

:

And certainly that would be responsible

or responsible, appropriate.

175

:

That's the word?

176

:

Uh, that would be appropriate

on the heels of what gotta.

177

:

Just done by delivering

Israel from the Assyrians.

178

:

So some 46, such a good one

for you to read through.

179

:

Uh, there's been a lot of different

musicians that have put this to music.

180

:

Shane and Shane have done that.

181

:

Uh, of late.

182

:

Uh, another one called the corner

room has a version of Psalm 46.

183

:

That's really good as well.

184

:

So if you want to hear it in

kind of a modern arrangement,

185

:

English words, Uh, those are two

that I would recommend to you.

186

:

But some 46 is so good.

187

:

God have our refuge and strength

to help in time of trouble.

188

:

We will not fear.

189

:

Uh, verse five, God will help.

190

:

When morning dawns, the Lord of

hosts, verse seven is with us.

191

:

The Lord of hosts, by the way,

is the title, the Lord of armies.

192

:

That's what hosts means.

193

:

He's the Lord of armies.

194

:

And he is with us.

195

:

The God of Jacob is our fortress.

196

:

And so as you read Psalm 46, just

think about it through the lens of.

197

:

Uh, the Israelites reflecting

on God's faithfulness to

198

:

deliver them from the Assyrians.

199

:

I think certainly it fits that context.

200

:

Now some 80.

201

:

Psalm 80 is a you'll notice in the

title again, a Psalm of ASAP, but again,

202

:

no contextual clues or markers there.

203

:

That would say that it's specifically

from this time, but, but it fits.

204

:

It fits.

205

:

And so here, this is more, I think,

from the perspective of those waiting

206

:

on the Lord for that deliverance.

207

:

So verse three, the prayer restore us.

208

:

O God, let your face shine upon us.

209

:

This is a plea for salvation.

210

:

That he's giving it.

211

:

He says the same thing in verse seven.

212

:

Again, restore us O God of hosts.

213

:

Let your face shine

that we might be saved.

214

:

And then down in verse 19, the same

thing restore us O Lord God of hosts.

215

:

Let your face shine

that we might be saved.

216

:

So some 80, rather than

some 46 is reflecting on the

217

:

power and strength of God.

218

:

Some 80 is more of in the midst

of it in the midst of the trial,

219

:

in the midst of the siege.

220

:

Uh, they're trusting that the

load is going to deliver them.

221

:

So an encouraging song for you,

maybe if you're going through.

222

:

A difficult time, a trial.

223

:

It's just to go back and an into.

224

:

To, to empathize, to see the

Psalmus rather empathize with you.

225

:

Uh, to see God empathize with you

through this and to be reminded.

226

:

Of, uh, of his goodness to us.

227

:

To be faithful to deliver us.

228

:

And it may not be that he's going to

deliver us from the valley and the way

229

:

we want to, uh, the deliverance from the

valley might come in in us being delivered

230

:

through, through death even at times.

231

:

But, uh, this is a good

song for us to be reminded.

232

:

God, you are faithful and you

can deliver us if it's your will.

233

:

Uh, and so just, uh, encouraging,

uh, som for us to read.

234

:

Again, contextual marker, perhaps

that, that leads us to think this

235

:

came during this time period, Psalm

80 verse five, you have fed them

236

:

with the bread of tears and given

them tears to drink and full measure.

237

:

The seizure Jerusalem would have led

to a great period of a famine because

238

:

Jerusalem was cut off from outside supply.

239

:

So what the, what did they have to

eat and what did they have to drink?

240

:

They, they had their tiers is

basically what that versus saying

241

:

again, perhaps that's why we, we might

place that there in that time period.

242

:

All right.

243

:

Finally, some, 1 35.

244

:

Someone 35, we have here another

Psalm of praise, another Psalm

245

:

of, of worship of Thanksgiving.

246

:

Uh, if you jumped down here,

uh, Or a couple of verses.

247

:

Of note here, verse six, whatever the

Lord pleases he does in heaven and on

248

:

earth in the seas, in all the deeps.

249

:

So just a reminder of God's power.

250

:

No one can stop his hand.

251

:

No one can stay him.

252

:

No one can say, Hey, you can't do this.

253

:

Verse 13, your name O

Lord endures forever.

254

:

Your renown renown as a word.

255

:

That means fame majesty,

praise your reputation.

256

:

Oh Lord.

257

:

Throughout all of the

ages is that praise there.

258

:

Uh, verses 15 through 18.

259

:

It sounds a lot like Isaiah's prophecies

regarding the idols of the nations, verse

260

:

15, the idols and the nations there.

261

:

They're silver and gold.

262

:

The work of human hands.

263

:

They have mouths, but they don't speak,

they have eyes, but they don't see,

264

:

they have ears, but they don't hear nor

is there any breath in their mouths,

265

:

those who make them become like them.

266

:

So to all who trust in that,

remember we just read that those

267

:

who make them become like them.

268

:

They, they, they become feudal.

269

:

They become nothing in the end

because the idols are powerless.

270

:

They are powerless.

271

:

So again, Uh, that could be potentially

a reason why we might look at a verse or

272

:

a song like this and say it fits the same

context that we've been studying with.

273

:

Uh Sennacherib and the Assyrian siege

of Jerusalem, that timeframe, at least.

274

:

So there you go.

275

:

There's our DBR.

276

:

Uh, for today and I hope you have a

great Sunday, hope church has been

277

:

a part of it and we can't wait.

278

:

We'll be back with you or I'll be

back with you tomorrow, but let me

279

:

pray as we wrap up God, we thank

you for your faithfulness to us.

280

:

We thank you for your faithfulness

to be able to deliver us.

281

:

We thank you.

282

:

That it's true.

283

:

We can say as well, you do whatever

you please in heaven and on earth

284

:

in the season, all the deeps that,

that no one can stay your hand.

285

:

And so I know that there are

those listening right now.

286

:

In the midst of the valley.

287

:

And I just pray that this morning

they'd be encouraged by the reality

288

:

that you are the God of the valley.

289

:

As much as you are the God of the

mountaintop, you are the God of the trial,

290

:

as much as you are the God of the triumph.

291

:

And so I pray that they

would be encouraged by that.

292

:

They would be reminded of that.

293

:

There'll be reminded even of the eternal

perspective that allows us to have hope in

294

:

the midst of the pain and the suffering.

295

:

We might endure and experience

here on this side of the cross

296

:

or this side of eternity rather.

297

:

And so we pray these things,

God, and we ask for your.

298

:

Uh, your good hand of favor upon us.

299

:

We thank you that we were able to

be inside this morning for church

300

:

and, and we didn't have to set up

outside what a blessing that is.

301

:

We don't want to take

those things for granted.

302

:

We thank you for that.

303

:

We praise you for that.

304

:

And we pray this all in Jesus name.

305

:

Amen.

306

:

Keep it in your Bibles tune in

tomorrow for another episode

307

:

of the daily Bible podcast.
