Speaker:

This is the Again podcast brought to

you by Entrusted Ministries, , and

2

:

I'm your host, Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today I'm gonna ask a really

scary question that I know

4

:

many of us are thinking.

5

:

Am I messing up my kids?

6

:

Every time I turn around, it

seems like someone is telling me

7

:

how I should be doing something

different, better, or how I need to

8

:

buy their product to do it right.

9

:

It takes a lot of discernment to sort

through all of these messages, and

10

:

sometimes I don't even realize how it's

affecting me, but as I asked my Aunt

11

:

Betsy, Betsy Corning, author and founder

of Entrusted Ministries to sit down with

12

:

me and explain why we can have peace

in the midst of all of this chaos of

13

:

culture, I asked her to reassure us

that we're not completely blowing it.

14

:

Her answer was so peace giving

that I'm gonna have it on

15

:

repeat and I hope you do too.

16

:

This is one you really need to hear.

17

:

Mama.

18

:

They're the joyful agains our children.

19

:

Shout on the swings, the exhausting

agains of cooking and laundry and

20

:

the difficult agains of discipline.

21

:

So much of what we do

as mothers is on repeat.

22

:

So what if we woke up with clarity,

knowing which agains we were called to.

23

:

And went to bed believing we are

faithful in what matters most.

24

:

We believe God's word is

the key to untangle from the

25

:

confusion and overwhelm we feel.

26

:

Let's look up together to embrace a

motherhood full of freedom and joy.

27

:

Stephanie: Recently we were together

and you said something that I really

28

:

walked away and I just had to ponder.

29

:

You said, moms are so worried today.

30

:

They're so afraid they're going to

mess up their kids, but they need

31

:

to know that it's going to be okay.

32

:

And that's one of the greatest

blessings I've received from taking

33

:

Entrusted and from just being able to

soak in your wisdom over the years.

34

:

I think you present the truth of

scripture in such a hopeful way, the

35

:

way God wants us to see it, that we

can have hope and peace even when we

36

:

don't know the result, because we're

trusting in a good sovereign God.

37

:

I will admit that even as I press into

the Lord consistently growing up and

38

:

being this first generation to be

inundated with continual bad news, often

39

:

devastating news all day long, even though

I really have pretty firm boundaries

40

:

for myself about what I take in, I think

even being surrounded by others that are

41

:

constantly taking in the bad information

or constantly receiving these updates,

42

:

we're continually being fed how we can

do better as moms, what new studies are

43

:

saying about what we've already done wrong

and how we're gonna mess up our kids if

44

:

we don't buy, read and do this, and this.

45

:

How can we counter this

onslaught of discouragement

46

:

and doom and parent with hope?

47

:

In a world that really is telling

us we are messing up our children if

48

:

we don't do exactly what they say.

49

:

Betsy: Yes, it's interesting,

this generation does have

50

:

an information overload.

51

:

And so what that's creating in

the minds and hearts of mothers

52

:

and fathers can be overwhelming.

53

:

So one thing we wanna do is limit our

input and definitely match it up against.

54

:

The word of God.

55

:

And so much of our hearts can be calmed

and comforted by the word of God.

56

:

When I was, oh, maybe third or

fourth grade after school, I would

57

:

watch this show with one of my

neighborhood friends called Get Smart.

58

:

And it had a, the enemy the nemesis

of control, which was Get smart's.

59

:

Agency was chaos.

60

:

And I think that was very fitting

even way back there in the sixties,

61

:

that chaos is the enemy of organized,

thought, rational reasonable thinking.

62

:

And the Lord wouldn't have us go there.

63

:

He wouldn't have our minds be

filled with things that are.

64

:

Battling and we need to be dwelling,

as it says in Philippians , dwell on

65

:

the things that are good and right,

and excellent and pure and lovely and

66

:

all of these things, but we don't.

67

:

We get pulled in by things

that are chaotic and that

68

:

is the scheme of the devil.

69

:

That is his number one ploy.

70

:

He is a liar from the beginning.

71

:

He's an accuser.

72

:

He's gonna try to make you think

that you're an absolute failure.

73

:

And I'm gonna say that I know that I

failed my kids at certain times of their

74

:

lives, but I wasn't doing it at the

time thinking I'm gonna do this to fail.

75

:

You we're always doing our best, and

it's really hurtful to a parent to

76

:

think that their child would say.

77

:

You failed me by doing this, you know,

because at the time we're always trying

78

:

to do our very best with our kids.

79

:

At least I hope that would

be our goal and our motive.

80

:

But chaos is the instrument of Satan, and

he will do whatever he can to confuse us.

81

:

It is the number one way that he

works in the ideology of people

82

:

to make things seem uncertain.

83

:

Now, so many kids today are

uncertain about who they are.

84

:

It's all of this thing of chaos.

85

:

And, it's really not just feeding on the

minds of parents, but on children too.

86

:

And it's devastating.

87

:

So what do we wanna do?

88

:

We wanna dwell on the

things that are right.

89

:

We wanna limit our input of

listening to counterfeits, and

90

:

we wanna be able to identify.

91

:

Is this a counterfeit or not?

92

:

Well, we might say, I'm not sure

if it's a counterfeit and we can

93

:

get some good advice, or we can

just stay away from certain things.

94

:

Stay away from certain things that

are poisoned that make us think wrong.

95

:

. So we can go to one of these verses

that we even memorized from Entrusted.

96

:

It's one of my faves.

97

:

It's Colossians two eight.

98

:

It says, see to it that no one takes

you captive through philosophy and

99

:

empty deception according to the

tradition of men, according to the

100

:

elementary principles of this world,

rather than according to Christ,

101

:

Christ gives us everything we need to

raise our kids, and we can get pulled

102

:

in so many different directions and

so many different thought patterns.

103

:

But our thought patterns are going back to

Philippians four starting with verse four.

104

:

Rejoice in the Lord always.

105

:

Again, I say rejoice.

106

:

Let your gentle spirit

be known to all men.

107

:

The Lord is near.

108

:

The Lord is near.

109

:

Be anxious for nothing but

in everything with prayer and

110

:

supplication with thanksgiving.

111

:

Let your requests be made known

to God the peace of God, which

112

:

surpasses all understanding.

113

:

All comprehension shall guard your

hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

114

:

And going on in verse eight.

115

:

Finally, brethren, whatever is true.

116

:

Whatever's honorable, whatever is right,

whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

117

:

whatever is of good repute, if there

is any excellence, and if anything

118

:

worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

119

:

The things that you've learned and

received, and heard and seen in me.

120

:

Practice these things and the

God of peace will be with you.

121

:

I love that because I know a couple

of times in my life when I was a young

122

:

mother, when I was so overwhelmed with

anxiety about something and I laid in

123

:

my bed and I prayed these verses and I

prayed, be anxious for nothing but in

124

:

everything by prayer and supplication

with thanksgiving, let my request be

125

:

made known to God and the peace of God.

126

:

Will overwhelm, which

surpasses all comprehension.

127

:

She'll guard my heart, all my emotion and

my mind, all my thoughts in Christ Jesus.

128

:

Sometimes we just have to abandon all

those things and just go back to prayer

129

:

and really concentrating on God and say,

I just submitted all to you, all this

130

:

chaos in my heart and in my thoughts.

131

:

I give it to you because you tell me

you are near, you are always near me.

132

:

And you hear, this is my prayer to

settle my heart, settle my mind,

133

:

and lead me in the right path.

134

:

And he does.

135

:

I love the thought that he's near.

136

:

We could write these verses

down that say the Lord is near

137

:

'cause they're super precious.

138

:

So that's another way

that I would say to do it.

139

:

But one thing I will say for sure,

and I mentioned it a little bit ago.

140

:

As an older mother, I will say you will

do things that you wish you didn't do, but

141

:

you don't know it at the time you think

you're doing the best that you can do.

142

:

Somebody once asked me at a q and A

for Entrusted, do you have any regrets

143

:

about how you raised your children?

144

:

And I was younger then and, I said, no.

145

:

I said, because they

were in their twenties.

146

:

I remember thinking they weren't ready.

147

:

They weren't ready.

148

:

I still needed to teach them so

many things because I didn't feel

149

:

like this was solidified in their

life and all those things that I

150

:

was in a little bit of a panic.

151

:

Now, I was a little bit older mom and

I had seen that in their twenties.

152

:

Wow.

153

:

Would you believe it?

154

:

They continue to grow without me.

155

:

Without me, right there.

156

:

And why?

157

:

Because the Holy Spirit

was sanctifying them.

158

:

And that was a big lesson for me.

159

:

The Holy Spirit continues to

sanctify them while I'm not,

160

:

daily present in their lives.

161

:

And thank goodness, thank goodness

that's how it's supposed to be.

162

:

We are supposed to be letting go

and they are supposed to be learning

163

:

how to live under the authority of

God's word and eventually leave and

164

:

cleave to their new husband or wife.

165

:

Well, anyway, that's what I was thinking.

166

:

At that age, I was seeing that

sanctification continue on in my young

167

:

adult children, and I was so grateful.

168

:

But now that I'm older, I hear of certain.

169

:

Things in their lives.

170

:

And I think, I wish I could have,

responded differently so that

171

:

you didn't go through that hurt.

172

:

And I don't know, I think the Lord

is working on me because the Lord

173

:

uses all of those things still to

sanctify us and to sanctify them and

174

:

all the things that we go through.

175

:

We can't really assess, , blame

to another person because it's

176

:

the Lord that is allowing things

and he's testing our faith.

177

:

And sometimes he can use the

mistakes of our parents to be a

178

:

sanctifying influence in our lives.

179

:

And he does.

180

:

He miraculously works out all

these things , for those who are

181

:

called according to his purposes.

182

:

So if we're diligent to be

called according to his purposes.

183

:

He's gonna work out those past hurts

for our good and for his glory.

184

:

Because the person that can live

through certain hurts and say glory

185

:

be to God, those are the person that

lives with peace in their heart,

186

:

despite the chaos in the world.

187

:

And I think we recognize the chaos.

188

:

Definitely.

189

:

We recognize the chaos.

190

:

The chaos is just so much more in

our faces because of technology

191

:

and information overload.

192

:

But when I was a young mother and we

didn't have the internet, we still

193

:

had parents who were afraid to bring

children into the world because

194

:

they thought the world was an awful

place, even back when I was young.

195

:

Obviously now it's snowballed

because things that you didn't

196

:

maybe know about were happening.

197

:

It's just we are so aware of

everything that's happening.

198

:

We're so aware of human trafficking

and maybe it was happening, but

199

:

I don't think it was happening at

the scale that it's happening now.

200

:

I think evil is just rampant and out

of control, and that's how it will be.

201

:

But that isn't supposed to grab

us by the ankles and pull us down.

202

:

We are supposed to always be

looking up, not looking down.

203

:

The Lord says, look up.

204

:

Why?

205

:

Why does he always say, look up?

206

:

Because he's returning

and we're looking for him.

207

:

We're not supposed to be looking down

at the world and all the chaos and

208

:

confusion and awfulness around us.

209

:

We do what we can do to help and

serve, but our eyes are to be up

210

:

focused on him who's returning,

and to that we can be rejoicing

211

:

As the verse says, rejoice always.

212

:

Again, I say rejoice again.

213

:

I say rejoice.

214

:

The the Lord is near.

215

:

The Lord is returning soon, and

you can have peace in your heart.

216

:

You can overcome confusion

and chaos in your heart and

217

:

in your mind, in your thoughts

218

:

Stephanie: I feel, , convicted

and encouraged as you speak,

219

:

and right as you began and you

were talking about the enemy.

220

:

I thought about the tree that we were

commanded to not eat from the tree

221

:

of the knowledge of good and evil.

222

:

And I do think.

223

:

That is such a temptation.

224

:

If I just knew more, if I

understood more, I could set my

225

:

kids or my family up for success.

226

:

And so often we have these great

intentions of learning more, but

227

:

then they conflict or they distract

from the things that we need to know

228

:

and understand the most, which is

the character of God and his word.

229

:

We were talking right before this

about breathing and how the structure

230

:

of children's teeth and jaws

that's a real hot topic right now.

231

:

And just that one thing I think,

wow, that's something I could focus

232

:

on in my children all day long.

233

:

I could look over at the position, oh

my goodness, they're mouth breathing

234

:

again, or when I look at them.

235

:

As they're sleeping in their beds.

236

:

And I come in just for that last

prayer of the day and I put my hand

237

:

on their leg, and I thank God for

these children but there are times

238

:

where I walk in and I am like, oh

no, they're mouth breathing again.

239

:

It starts this train

of worry in your brain.

240

:

But really that is such a sweet

moment that I can have with the Lord,

241

:

praying for deep, eternal things.

242

:

Sometimes knowledge has been the

greatest enemy of peace in my parenting.

243

:

And obviously we're certainly not calling

us to bury our heads in the sand but

244

:

you began with that information overload

that we are absolutely inundated with

245

:

knowledge to the point where we can't

possibly apply everything that we know.

246

:

And I think we're being tempted to

throw off all sorts of wise boundaries.

247

:

It doesn't really matter if that vitamin

is the perfect solution, because if

248

:

you can't afford it, then the Lord

isn't calling you to act upon it.

249

:

There's all of these wise boundaries

in God's word, I think about Mary and

250

:

she was faithful with one thing, and

the Lord commended her faith for that.

251

:

And we can get so distracted

and pulled so many directions in

252

:

what we think is a good pursuit.

253

:

And it might be a pursuit of

good, but one thing is better.

254

:

And that battle, certainly can

be multiplied in motherhood because

255

:

all of a sudden you care so deeply

about so many different people.

256

:

But it really is an

opportunity to stay steadfast

257

:

Betsy: there's so many different

directions that this could go in.

258

:

It could go in, like you were

saying, the health choices

259

:

that we make for our children.

260

:

And obviously we do wanna

be informed about those.

261

:

And there it goes into major choices

that we make for our children.

262

:

They're educational choices.

263

:

They're just, you know, what they

read, what they watch, what they

264

:

listen to, what they see, everything.

265

:

It's.

266

:

These are all important and it

comes down very much to wisdom.

267

:

And the Bible tells us that the fear

of God is the beginning of wisdom

268

:

and we can get wisdom from the Bible.

269

:

That's what wisdom really is.

270

:

And if we were to come up

with a definition for wisdom?

271

:

I think my husband says it is the

ability to apply the most God-honoring

272

:

solution to any given situation.

273

:

So how can we honor God with any solution

if it's not found through his word?

274

:

Now, obviously we're not gonna find

mouth breathing in the Bible, but

275

:

we're going to find so many basic

concepts and principles in the Bible.

276

:

All that wisdom comes from God.

277

:

And God says, if you think you

don't have it, then ask me for it.

278

:

Get close to me because God created

us to have that relationship with him.

279

:

Get close to him 'cause

he's already near you.

280

:

So tune into him and tune out

a lot of these other messages.

281

:

And we might say, it doesn't really talk

about mouth breathing, but God can give

282

:

you direction on what is a good choice.

283

:

And he can give you wisdom and discernment

about these things that are out in the

284

:

world about the things that are confusing.

285

:

It says He will direct our paths.

286

:

When we lean on him, when we acknowledge

him, when we are grateful to him

287

:

for all that he's given us in his

providence, he directs our paths.

288

:

He helps us make that wise

God honoring decision.

289

:

That's the path that we wanna take.

290

:

If we say, Lord, help me make the best

God-honoring choice in this situation

291

:

and pray for it, and your heart is

to do that with your husband, I'm

292

:

sure that he will direct you in that.

293

:

And if you find out you've made

mistakes that foolish impulsive mistakes

294

:

somewhere along life with your kids.

295

:

Be forgiving.

296

:

Be forgiving of each other, I think

you'll be more understanding now,

297

:

being a parent yourself when you grow

up and you see, I wish I would've

298

:

done this a little different.

299

:

I, I wish I would've made them eat their

vegetables, or I wish I would've not

300

:

been so pushy with the, I don't know.

301

:

We can go the spectrum to the

opposite end so easily on anything.

302

:

So help us to be wise parents and

help us to focus on the Lord and

303

:

direct our kids to want wisdom also.

304

:

Stephanie: it makes me think about

Titus two, and I know that you talk

305

:

about that so much in Entrusted that we

need to be looking to the older women,

306

:

god's design for the intergenerational

body of Christ to thrive.

307

:

And so often now if we're looking to

our phones or we're looking to Google

308

:

for all of these solutions, then we're

really limiting the impact that the Lord

309

:

wanted us to receive in discipleship,

that we can be looking to older women to

310

:

say, wow, I'm getting lost in the weeds

here, but tell me, when you look back

311

:

at raising your children, what are the

things that really mattered you speak

312

:

such words of hope and perspective.

313

:

We need that.

314

:

We need to just not always be looking

at people in the same stage as us, which

315

:

is commonly what these influencers are.

316

:

And they might have something very

valid to say, but if that's really the

317

:

majority of where we're going then we

do need to be cautioned about that.

318

:

Betsy: Yes.

319

:

And it's interesting because the

Bible says older women teach the

320

:

younger women, teach them what?

321

:

Teach 'em to love their husbands

and to love their children.

322

:

It doesn't say.

323

:

Smarter women.

324

:

It doesn't say more powerful women.

325

:

It doesn't say more

what it just says older.

326

:

Why would it say older?

327

:

Why would that be the word?

328

:

Because they have that experience and

perspective going through saying, yes,

329

:

I made some mistakes and it did impact

my kids , but I did the best I could

330

:

with the Lord's help, I've tried to make

the wisest choices, but when I didn't

331

:

we learned how to forgive each other.

332

:

And the Lord has always been with us.

333

:

And we see the Lord's faithfulness

in life, which is so important.

334

:

We see the Lord's faithfulness to us.

335

:

The other thing I wanna say

is teach the younger women.

336

:

I get so much out of being with

younger women and there's such a.

337

:

Privilege of being with younger women too.

338

:

And I learn so much from them.

339

:

They keep me up to date with

so many things, like what's

340

:

the latest, this and that.

341

:

And did you know that there's paper

out there made of stone, somebody had

342

:

a tablet and it's looks like paper,

but it's stone and it's waterproof.

343

:

And I just ordered some.

344

:

And I think, how would I know this if

I wasn't with these younger women that

345

:

keep me in tune with what's going on?

346

:

And and plus they are so quick

and bright and knowledgeable and

347

:

I really love being with them.

348

:

So it's not just a one

way street by any means.

349

:

It's valuable for the older women

to be with the younger women too.

350

:

And I really love it.

351

:

Stephanie: I think of the times

that I have sought an older woman.

352

:

I can think of every coffee date and a

key takeaway I went in and this mom has a

353

:

really impulsive child, but she's 15 years

down the road and I need to talk to her.

354

:

I need to gain wisdom and the

help that that brought me or.

355

:

know, This mom has a husband with

a chronic illness and I really

356

:

need to receive encouragement

from her for my situation.

357

:

There have just been different times

and I walk away feeling so ministered

358

:

to, and often when I seek people

in my generation, I'm so grateful.

359

:

It's kind of like the in the trenches

mentality oh, you're dealing with that

360

:

too, and you feel an understanding.

361

:

But I think that there's a greater

peace and problem solving overall

362

:

when I do seek someone who's farther

down the road, uh, experientially

363

:

than I am in a situation.

364

:

Betsy: Because they've

been through it, right?

365

:

And they've seen the faithfulness

of God, and I love that.

366

:

And another verse that we had in

Entrusted was one Corinthians:

367

:

For God is not a God of

confusion but of peace.

368

:

As in all the churches of the saint, God

is not a God of confusion, but of peace.

369

:

And if we're confused, if we feel we

live in a world of chaos and we just

370

:

don't know who we are what decisions

to make, just know that God is a God

371

:

of peace and he can calm your mind,

your thoughts and your emotions.

372

:

When we just pray to him and ask

for that guidance, that wise,

373

:

guidance that he alone can give.

374

:

If we've encouraged you with

anything over the life of this

375

:

podcast, I hope you've seen that.

376

:

We wanna be the moms that

we were created to be.

377

:

We have to seek the Lord first

and foremost, and we're doing

378

:

everything we can to equip you

to do just that one resource.

379

:

:
