Steve Judge shares his inspiring journey of resilience and determination, emphasizing the importance of not leaning on excuses and living life to the fullest. After a devastating car accident at 28 that left him fighting for his life, Steve transformed his challenges into opportunities, ultimately becoming a world champion in power triathlon. He discusses the significance of understanding one's goals and the motivation behind them, advocating for a mindset focused on possibilities rather than limitations. Throughout the conversation, Steve highlights the value of surrounding oneself with the right people, or his "Golden Gang," to foster growth and overcome fears. His insights serve as a powerful reminder that embracing challenges and striving for personal bests can lead to extraordinary achievements and a life without regrets.
"We all have two lives, we realise that and start using that when we realise we only have one."

When you have a life changing experience, when you nearly die, when you have you, when you're down on your knees, that's when you pull out all the stops.
Steve Judge:You pull out all your knowledge and experiences and you survive.
Steve Judge:And apparently not generally the human being is conditioned to be very, very safe.
Steve Judge:And that's not a bad thing because we want to be safe and survive.
Steve Judge:So absolutely don't go out your comfort zone and stay where you are.
Steve Judge:If you're okay where you are, then, hey, let's just stay there.
Steve Judge:But that's not where the magic happens.
Steve Judge:You can be happy, but are you really content?
Steve Judge:I love the quote I'm using a lot at the moment is that we've all got two lives and we, we realize that we start using that when we realize we've only got one.
Steve Judge:I realize that there and then I want other people to realize they've only got one life.
Steve Judge:They've already start living.

Ricky Locke:Not only is he a world champion and an inspiration, but he also shares a common goal with this podcast.
Ricky Locke:I'll explain a little bit about what this interview is all about, but if you've never heard of Steve Judge, he has an absolutely incredible story and in summary, he'll go into more detail in this episode.
Ricky Locke:But the age of 28, he was involved in a devastating car accident that left him pretty much fighting for his life.
Ricky Locke:He had to then endure a traumatic rehabilitation process, which actually includes having to physically grow his own leg back.
Ricky Locke:But through his struggles, his determination and his passion, he later became a world champion.
Ricky Locke:He has such a courageous story and I just had to reach out to him to get him onto this podcast.
Ricky Locke:However, the reason that you should listen to this episode is That a not only is it an inspirational story and Steve will really, really inspire you to, as the title says, not to lean on your excuses, but we talk about all such great things such as comfort zones, expanding them, talking about the art of resilience.
Ricky Locke:But it is such a great episode and yeah, just by listening to this, it will inspire you not to lean on your excuses and to live with no regrets.

Ricky Locke:Hello Steve.
Steve Judge:Hello.
Steve Judge:Hello Ricky.
Steve Judge:How are you?
Steve Judge:Are you okay today?
Ricky Locke:Very well, thank you.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, great to be.
Ricky Locke:Great to see you here.
Ricky Locke:Yeah.
Ricky Locke:And a big shout out first to for Jake Richings for obviously passing you this way.
Ricky Locke:So great to see you on here and really looking forward to this episode because as we just said just before this, there's lots of relative themes throughout your story that I'm feeling right now.
Ricky Locke:So I'm really looking to tap into this.
Ricky Locke:But Steve, we've done a lovely little intro about what it is you do, but tell us a little bit more about who you are and what you're doing right now.
Steve Judge:Okay, so what springs to mind is I'm a business owner, so my business is as a professional speaker.
Steve Judge:Now I have had to diversify because of that pandemic thing that hit us.
Steve Judge:You couldn't just be a professional speaker.
Steve Judge:So yes, I also run workshops, I do one to one coaching and I'm an author.
Steve Judge:I have produced, produced, published one book so far which my autobiography.
Steve Judge:And I'm currently writing my second book which is at the moment the title could be called From Good to Gold.
Steve Judge:And I think people understand what that means.
Steve Judge:It's taking people from where they are to where they want to be.
Steve Judge:It's about unlocking their potential so they can live the best lives that they deserve.
Steve Judge:So all of that is what I'm doing at the moment.
Steve Judge:And the why I'm doing it is pretty much what you said in your title.
Steve Judge:You know, I.
Steve Judge:I've experienced some highs and some lows, but, you know, if we're concentrating on the highs, the high achievement that I've experienced, I want others to experience that as well.
Steve Judge:So I know how I did it.
Steve Judge:I've managed to get that out of my head, and now I'm sharing that in the best way so that other people can experience that feeling.
Steve Judge:So that's what makes me excited.
Steve Judge:That's what I'm passionate about, is other people fulfilling their dreams.
Steve Judge:So I'm always thinking about the best ways to do that.
Steve Judge:Speaking is a great way.
Steve Judge:Workshops, coaching, book writing, all of these things, and podcasts, which is why I'm here today.
Steve Judge:Thank you very much, Ricky, for the opportunity.
Ricky Locke:It is a pleasure, Steve, and it is an incredible, courageous story.
Ricky Locke:And the book is called don't lean on your excuses, which is how I kind of discovered you.
Ricky Locke:I remember, I think, briefly meeting you last year at one of the PSA conferences.
Ricky Locke:And then for some reason, I remember reaching out and Jake said to me, oh, you need to meet this guy called Steve Judge.
Ricky Locke:And I thought, this seems familiar.
Ricky Locke:I know that name.
Ricky Locke:And I went, oh, my God.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, that's the guy that I remember.
Ricky Locke:So, yeah, and this is why it's so great to have you on, because your purpose is very similar to what's.
Ricky Locke:What I'm doing at the minute, if trying to unlock the best version of ourselves to then create an extraordinary life.
Ricky Locke:But I'd love to kind of go back a bit, because the story that got you from where you were to where you now is just an incredible and inspiring story.
Ricky Locke:And I love if you wouldn't mind sharing your incredible story.
Steve Judge:Yeah, yeah, yeah, no problem.
Steve Judge:Because it's.
Steve Judge:It's kind of the foundation, the cornerstone to what I talk about.
Steve Judge:For me, it gets a little bit of respect for me so that people can actually listen to what I've.
Steve Judge:That the wisdom and the messages that I've got to share.
Steve Judge: So let's take you back to: Steve Judge:My.
Steve Judge:My car lost control.
Steve Judge:It's water on the road.
Steve Judge:Car skidded.
Steve Judge:Nobody else on the road, nobody else in the car wasn't speeding.
Steve Judge:Car crashed into a pole, and that bent the car in half, and it crushed both my legs.
Steve Judge:Now, because of that, I was mostly dashed to the nearest hospital.
Steve Judge:They did life saving operations.
Steve Judge:When I came round, I was told that I may never walk again.
Steve Judge:Now that for me was a turning point.
Steve Judge:I think it would be for many people and I think you can either.
Steve Judge:Well, for me it's kind of like the fight or flight syndrome.
Steve Judge:I could have just turned over in bed and just said, okay, I give in, I guess I'll never walk again.
Steve Judge:But for me, I was really angry.
Steve Judge:I was really angry that somebody had the audacity to say that to me.
Steve Judge:It's like a red rag to a bull when somebody says I can't do something.
Steve Judge:I was like, I'll show you.
Steve Judge:You know, you don't even know who I am.
Steve Judge:I clearly, I've got two legs here, okay?
Steve Judge:They're pretty messed up.
Steve Judge:And one's got a massive metal cage around it and it's actually four inches shorter than it should be.
Steve Judge:But I've got two legs and you're saying I can't walk.
Steve Judge:So you know, that to me was, it was a goal that I said, not, not there.
Steve Judge:And then I didn't leap out of bed and proven wrong like they do in the films.
Steve Judge:But I.
Steve Judge:Inside me, something was growing inside me, this, this anger.
Steve Judge:There's this golden orb of thinking, right, what do I have to do?
Steve Judge:The first thing I had to do was to eat, get energy, you know, just survive.
Steve Judge:I think it's the survival instincts.
Steve Judge:But it was that moment that helped me to progress forward again.
Steve Judge:Like I said, not immediately, but eventually accepting the situation.
Steve Judge:Once you accept the situation, you can start moving forward with your life.
Steve Judge:With my life.
Steve Judge:I love the quote I'm using a lot at the moment is that we've all got two lives and we realize that and we start using that when we realize we've only got one.
Steve Judge:I realize that there and then I want other people to realize they've only got one life.
Steve Judge:Everybody start living it.
Steve Judge:So I started doing that, started doing my rehabilitation, my physio, et cetera, et cetera.
Steve Judge:I grew my leg back by 4 inches.
Steve Judge:I learned to stand again, walk again, and I achieved.
Steve Judge:And I didn't get back to normality because I realized that there is no such thing as normal.
Steve Judge:Big message out there.
Steve Judge:But I had to start thinking about what I could do rather than what I couldn't do with my disability.
Steve Judge:In both my legs I had lack of feeling, lack of movement, lack of stability.
Steve Judge:But I could, you know, do some things.
Steve Judge:I could swim, so I swam.
Steve Judge:I got onto a bike, so I Could cycle these all physical things.
Steve Judge:Eventually I entered this thing called a power triathlon, which is triathlon for disabled people, swimming, cycling and running.
Steve Judge:And I did it, and I did it to a certain level, certain standard within my category.
Steve Judge:I entered that competition.
Steve Judge:I became a British champion in my category, which is amazing.
Steve Judge:Now, my life has been very much about being aware of your vision and seizing opportunities.
Steve Judge:I love having a vision of knowing what I want.
Steve Judge:That's a vision board, or thinking about what I want, visualization.
Steve Judge:And this is what propelled me forward.
Steve Judge:I wanted to win.
Steve Judge:So I set out that as a target.
Steve Judge:When I crossed that finish line, I had this opportunity and an opportunity to represent Great Britain, which is amazing, which I grabbed with both hands.
Steve Judge:This is what life is about.
Steve Judge:So I did that and I competed representing Great Britain now.
Steve Judge:And I became European champion.
Steve Judge:Well, now that set new goals for me.
Steve Judge:I now wanted to be a world champion.
Steve Judge:That was what I focused on.
Steve Judge: This was leading up to: Steve Judge:I'm kind of blending into the book that I'm writing about the five winning strategies that you need.
Steve Judge:And I did all of those and it took me all the way to Beijing.
Steve Judge:Meeting the power triathletes from around the world now that are competing, setting off, doing the swim, doing the bike, looking behind me, but looking in front of me, looking at what I wanted to achieve, finding that finish line, getting onto the run and pushing it, hearing the crowd cheering and just coming around the final corner, seeing the waves, flying the finish line in front of me, pushing it, maxing it out, crossing that finish line to become a world champion.
Steve Judge:Just an amazing accolade and such an achievement.
Steve Judge:But for me at that time, just a massive relief.
Steve Judge:A relief for all the things that I've been through from the rehabilitation.
Steve Judge:I mean, you could go back even further from my childhood through the accident, the rehabilitation.
Steve Judge:Standing, walking, swimming, biking, running, doing it, becoming a world champion.
Steve Judge:Now I went on from there to become a two times world champion.
Steve Judge: international competition in: Steve Judge:I want to understand what other people are going through and why they're not achieving the things that they really want.
Steve Judge:People talk the talk, but they don't do it.
Steve Judge:They talk what they want.
Steve Judge:I want this, I want that.
Steve Judge:Well, go on then, do it.
Steve Judge:Go and get it.
Steve Judge:If that's what you really want.
Steve Judge:That's what will make you happy, that's what will fulfill your life.
Steve Judge:Then you should go ahead and do that.
Steve Judge:That's what I'm doing now in my business as a professional speaker.
Steve Judge:Now, I understand that speaking is not for everybody.
Steve Judge:It's one of the biggest fears that everybody has.
Steve Judge:But I love it and I love it because I'm giving something back.
Steve Judge:So it's not about me, it's about them.
Steve Judge:What does the audience want?
Steve Judge:Do they want to be richer, fitter?
Steve Judge:Do they want to have a love life?
Steve Judge:Do they want to have security, an environment, nice new car, money in the bank?
Steve Judge:What is that thing that they really want?
Steve Judge:Their gold, as I call it.
Steve Judge:Their goal, their opportunity, their love, their dream.
Steve Judge:Because I can help them achieve their goals.
Steve Judge:And so that's what I'm doing now.
Steve Judge:That's pretty much me in a nutshell.
Steve Judge:Ricky.
Ricky Locke:That's absolutely incredible.
Ricky Locke:And I love that was it goal, opportunity, love and dream.
Steve Judge:Dream, yeah.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, it's beautiful.
Ricky Locke:I love that.
Ricky Locke:So, amazing story.
Ricky Locke:And obviously we'll obviously put a link about this in the show notes because a lot of this, obviously from the book, and you've summarized that story so well, and, you know, I think very modest as well, you know, because I think there's so many things to unpack from your incredible story, you know, about choices.
Ricky Locke:Probably the most resilient person, I think, resilient person I've ever met, Steve, taking responsibility, fear, you know, vision.
Ricky Locke:And I'd love to understand, where does this drive within you come from, that need to succeed?
Ricky Locke:It's mentioned in the book quite a bit.
Ricky Locke:You know, there's this need to succeed in your journal and your notes.
Ricky Locke:Where does this come from?
Ricky Locke:You know, was it from an early age?
Ricky Locke:I know that your family were all into fitness and running, but it's carried that theme all the way through.
Ricky Locke:So where does that come from?
Steve Judge:I think I.
Steve Judge:I believe that everybody's got it.
Steve Judge:I believe that everybody's got this.
Steve Judge:This need, I guess, almost it's a human thing, it's a survival thing.
Steve Judge:We've all got that with us.
Steve Judge:It's how you read it, how you use it.
Steve Judge:So I had it from an early age.
Steve Judge:I would have had it from an early age, but it was emphasized as my life went on.
Steve Judge:So from an early age, when I think back to, you know, what was that then?
Steve Judge:Was it at school?
Steve Judge:And think.
Steve Judge:I don't know if it was at school.
Steve Judge:I did my GCSEs and I.
Steve Judge:I did get one A, but that's not like a high achiever.
Steve Judge:But I love sports, like you said, I loved running.
Steve Judge:Running was my passion, and passion is the thing that usually drives us.
Steve Judge:And do.
Steve Judge:Do what makes you happy is one of my.
Steve Judge:My key messages out there.
Steve Judge:If that's what you fulfills your life and makes you happy, then.
Steve Judge:Then do that within reason.
Steve Judge:You know, all the good stuff, not the bad stuff.
Steve Judge:So.
Steve Judge:But scouting.
Steve Judge:Scouting was a big part of my life when I was a kid, and I love the badges there.
Steve Judge:And I.
Steve Judge:I used to be that Scout that used to take the badge book home and look through those.
Steve Judge:Those badges that I wanted.
Steve Judge:And then when I found those, I'd go and ask for help from my mom, my dad, the scout leader, of course.
Steve Judge:And getting those badges gave me fulfillment, gave me happiness.
Steve Judge:I was achieving now, in a way, I guess I was setting a foundation of setting goals and working towards them.
Steve Judge:I did achieve a lot of badges.
Steve Judge:I did get the.
Steve Judge:The bronze, the silver and the gold.
Steve Judge:I did get the Queen Scout Award when I was about 19 to 20 years old.
Steve Judge:That's the highest award you can get in scouting.
Steve Judge:So in a way, I was achieving there.
Steve Judge:Now, that's.
Steve Judge:Not a lot of people know about things like that, but for me, that was fulfillment.
Steve Judge:And I think that I carried that and I carried that for a long time until the car accident.
Steve Judge:Yes, I still did pbs.
Steve Judge:PBS are personal best.
Steve Judge:When I did sport, the main person I was competing against was me.
Steve Judge:I just wanted to better myself, and I loved it.
Steve Judge:I used to always write down in my notes the time that I did, the minute miles that I did, the conditions.
Steve Judge:But I also write a message to myself in the comments section.
Steve Judge:I always had a clipboard and writing these comments down.
Steve Judge:I used to say, really good run.
Steve Judge:Pushed it, maxed it out.
Steve Judge:Beat that, Steve.
Steve Judge:And a little message to myself, because I knew that the next time I'd go for a run, I would pick up that sheet to see what my time was last time.
Steve Judge:And I see this little message, a little gauntlet being laid down of, you know, beat that.
Steve Judge:And I go, yeah, all right, I will beat that.
Steve Judge:Steve.
Steve Judge:Talking to myself, apparently, there's nothing wrong with talking to yourself.
Steve Judge:I found that out when I worked the.
Steve Judge:When I did the.
Steve Judge:Was on the GB squad as an elite athlete because they did this assessment.
Steve Judge:And one of the questions on the assessment was, do you talk to yourself?
Steve Judge:Yes, I do.
Steve Judge:So at the end of the assessment, I said, can I just go back on those questions?
Steve Judge:I put, yes, I do talk to myself.
Steve Judge:Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Steve Judge:They looked at me and they went, it's actually A good thing.
Steve Judge:You know, you told yourself you're being aware of yourself, you're being aware of your feelings, your emotions, what's going on inside your head.
Steve Judge:There's nothing wrong with it, Steve.
Steve Judge:I thought, oh, thank goodness for that.
Steve Judge:So now I can openly say there's nothing wrong with talking to yourself.
Steve Judge:You were out.
Steve Judge:Yeah, don't talk it out loud.
Steve Judge:Maybe just keep it to yourself sometimes.
Steve Judge:And in the street stuff.
Steve Judge:But anyway, you can just pretend you're speaking on your phone or your AirPods.
Steve Judge:Anyway, I digress.
Steve Judge:So, yes, setting goals.
Steve Judge:PBS was my big drive.
Steve Judge:So I think that pushed me and the scouting element pushed me.
Steve Judge:But what I'm trying to get to is when I had the car accident, I think everything went into survival mode.
Steve Judge:Everything was emphasized, everything was like, you've got one life, live it.
Steve Judge:Everything pulled on all my experiences, all my knowledge from before that to survive and pull myself out of it.
Steve Judge:All the resilience that I'd built up was now emphasized.
Steve Judge:So I think I've always had it and I believe that everybody's always had it.
Steve Judge:And that's what I've used to make me the person that I am, to help me become a world champion, to help me have a business.
Steve Judge:You know, I've had this business for over five years that is elite because I've learned that only 2% of new businesses last over five years.
Steve Judge:Oh my goodness, that's me.
Steve Judge:And through the pandemic, and as a professional speaker, which is not the, you know, the most common of jobs, the thing is, I say all of this and this is what made me, but I learned, I've learned through writing my new book From Good to Gold, is that actually not everybody does have this.
Steve Judge:And that has shocked me because I think when you have a life changing experience, when you nearly die, when you have you, when you're down on your knees, that's when you pull out all the stops, you pull out all your knowledge and experiences and you survive.
Steve Judge:And apparently not.
Steve Judge:And that just really amazes me.
Steve Judge:Frustrates me more than that, though.
Steve Judge:It frustrates me that people don't dig down deep on these things and use it.
Steve Judge:And that's from what I've Learned is the 80%.
Steve Judge:That's 80% of the population.
Steve Judge:You know, people have said to me, steve, amazing story.
Steve Judge:I don't think I could have done what you did.
Steve Judge:And I'm like, I think you could have done because you know, when you're in that position, you pull out all the stops and you would have Done.
Steve Judge:I was wrong.
Steve Judge:I'm absolutely wrong.
Steve Judge:Apparently 80% of people would not have done what I've done.
Steve Judge:Only 20% would.
Steve Judge:And I can't believe that.
Steve Judge:But that's because the way I am, that's because of my mindset.
Steve Judge:And what the book is hoping to do or will do more confidently is it will change those 80% of people into the 20% if they want to be.
Steve Judge:I understand that some people are quite content doing what they're doing and living life, almost flatlining through life and say, hey, you know, job's a job and life is how it is and whatever.
Steve Judge:But there are some people that are stuck in the 80% and they want to be better than they are.
Steve Judge:They want to not be where they are, they want to be somewhere else, but they can't get there.
Steve Judge:Well, I know how to get there.
Steve Judge:And that's not being big headed or anything like, or brash about it.
Steve Judge:I've been through that and I've got it and I've written it in this book and this will help people.
Steve Judge:But more than that, I will share it maybe a little bit on this podcast.
Steve Judge:As a professional speaker, that's what I want to do.
Steve Judge:That's what my mission is.
Ricky Locke:Incredible.
Ricky Locke:And there's a question that I kind of baffle myself, especially from me being brought up and I know I've mentioned it before on this podcast, a lot about small village that I grew up in, very much a mindset of, this is what I might do.
Ricky Locke:I might go get a job, get married, have kids, and then that's life.
Ricky Locke:And I've always been destined to think what's more, is this it?
Ricky Locke:You know, and I don't think it is.
Ricky Locke:And I even remember to this day when I decided to leave my secure and stable job in the career to go full time as a professional magician and start a speaking business.
Ricky Locke:I still remember my mom saying to me, oh, Rick, how are you going to pay your mortgage?
Ricky Locke:You know, because that's just the way that they were conditioned, you know, that safety and security.
Ricky Locke:But why is it that you think that maybe not everybody, they probably have it within them to desire, you know, this desire to achieve all their dreams.
Ricky Locke:But why do you think we have so many people that just say, oh, I could never do that.
Steve Judge:It's a very safety thing.
Steve Judge:It's a very safe thing to say.
Steve Judge:And I want to put it on the line that I'm not a risk taker.
Steve Judge:I think I've got riskier as time's gone on.
Steve Judge:I think when you survive certain things, that helps you build up your confidence.
Steve Judge:And going through the pandemic has really given me a lot of confidence of what I can do in my business.
Steve Judge:If I survive that, oh my goodness, then you know, I've also had nothing to worry about.
Steve Judge:However, I still hold myself back, but I'm willing to branch out a little bit further and take even more risks.
Steve Judge:But I think generally the human being is conditioned to be very, very safe.
Steve Judge:I always ask this, and a lot of people that I meet, are you happy and are you content?
Steve Judge:And I get various answers.
Steve Judge:My answer is, I'm very happy.
Steve Judge:I'm always smiling.
Steve Judge:I'm very happy where I am, but I am nowhere near content.
Steve Judge:Oh, my goodness.
Steve Judge:I've got so much more that I want to do that I want to see, that I want to go and I'm working to get there.
Steve Judge:I can't just drop everything and go now like it's my last day on earth, you know, I can't.
Steve Judge:I'm not that crazy.
Steve Judge:I'm not that risk taking, but I can start working towards it.
Steve Judge:So what do I want to do right when I'm going to get there?
Steve Judge:Five years?
Steve Judge:Four years?
Steve Judge:Three years?
Steve Judge:Three years.
Steve Judge:Okay, so I've got now until three years to get there.
Steve Judge:What do I have to do to get there?
Steve Judge:Visionize it.
Steve Judge:Okay, yeah.
Steve Judge:Okay, that's, that's the easy part.
Steve Judge:How am I going to get there?
Steve Judge:Branch out, ask for help, etc.
Steve Judge:Etc.
Steve Judge:But yeah, I'm not content on where I am.
Steve Judge:Yes, this will push me out of my comfort zone.
Steve Judge:Okay, so let's do that.
Steve Judge:And I've learned recently that you don't just jump out of your comfort zone.
Steve Judge:You can do, of course, that's what the risk takers would do.
Steve Judge:So if you imagine a circle and you're in that circle, and that's your comfort zone, and outside the comfort zone is clearly out of the circle.
Steve Judge:What you do is you slowly expand your circle bit by bit by bit.
Steve Judge:A millimeter, a time, a centimeter, a meter, a kilometer.
Steve Judge:Bit by bit, you branch out so that you're still kind of in your safety of your comfort zone, but your comfort zone is just now bigger and it takes longer.
Steve Judge:Of course it does take longer.
Steve Judge:That's an investment as to flourish, to jump out of your comfort zone would be very risky.
Steve Judge:But also maybe that's something like buying a lottery ticket.
Steve Judge:It doesn't always work, so I wouldn't really recommend that.
Steve Judge:But what can you do to expand your comfort zone bit by bit to actually get there?
Steve Judge:So I think that's why people don't go for all the time.
Ricky Locke:I agree, I agree.
Ricky Locke:I feel like I'm very similar to you.
Ricky Locke:I was asked this question by my partner the other day, and we briefly shared this just before the podcast recorded.
Ricky Locke:I'm probably quite a very ambitious person like yourself, with all the dreams and all of the goals and all the ambitions in my life.
Ricky Locke:She asked me, ricky, when will enough be enough?
Ricky Locke:When will you ever be happy?
Ricky Locke:And I was like, well, I am happy.
Ricky Locke:I love doing things, but I just have this kind of tenacity within myself that to be the best version of myself.
Ricky Locke:And I don't know when that will be.
Ricky Locke:There might be a point one day when I get to like 78 and say, yeah, I'm happy now.
Ricky Locke:I've done all the things.
Ricky Locke:But I think for me, there's this urge within me, like I'm a probably jack of all trades, but not master of many.
Ricky Locke:There's a couple of things that probably a master of and not.
Ricky Locke:But I just want to explore and see what I'm actually my full potential.
Ricky Locke:But the thing that I've noticed from talking to people like yourself and other experts is like, that there's a breed of people like this.
Ricky Locke:You know, there's a clear difference, isn't there?
Ricky Locke:Like you said that 18 to 20%.
Ricky Locke:But that question, and even I'd love for you to answer as well, Steve, if you can.
Ricky Locke:You know, when will it be enough?
Ricky Locke:When do we fully become content?
Ricky Locke:It's a difficult one.
Ricky Locke:I can't seem to.
Ricky Locke:I'm always improving and striving to be better and better and grow and grow and sometimes that can blindside a lot of other things.
Ricky Locke:I don't know if you felt the same.
Steve Judge:Yeah, I think your goals change as you.
Steve Judge:As you go through life with experiences and it's about.
Steve Judge:For me, it's about trying everything.
Steve Judge:Okay.
Steve Judge:So for me, it's about having no regrets.
Steve Judge:So I love my life as a professional speaker and I think it's the best job in the world.
Steve Judge:Will I be keep.
Steve Judge:Will I keep doing this?
Steve Judge:The answer is at the moment, yes.
Steve Judge:But I've got this thing in my mind Saying, well, I don't know, if something better comes along, then I might do that.
Steve Judge:I don't know what that better thing is at the moment.
Steve Judge:I think in the past, you know, when I was.
Steve Judge:When I was working down the coal pit and when I was working laboratory and when I was working construction, health and safety, I could imagine a better future then.
Steve Judge:Absolutely.
Steve Judge:And I was kind of like waiting for it to come along, and eventually it did.
Steve Judge:But at the moment, you know, things are very good.
Steve Judge:So I can't see a better future.
Steve Judge:But never say never.
Steve Judge:And I think that's the thing as you go through life, you know, it's about seeing those opportunities and grabbing them.
Steve Judge:But like I said, I just want to double back on the no regrets.
Steve Judge:Because that is what the answer to a lot of my questions is.
Steve Judge:It's about living life with no regrets.
Steve Judge:And what I mean by that is that when my head hits the pillow at the end of the day, I ask myself, how was the day?
Steve Judge:You know, was it good?
Steve Judge:Was it bad?
Steve Judge:What went right?
Steve Judge:What went wrong?
Steve Judge:And I do like this journal of three things that I achieved, three things that I'm congratulating for, things that I'm grateful for.
Steve Judge:The thing is that sometimes it's not been the best day.
Steve Judge:And I say, okay, I do regret that I didn't spend enough time, you know, sending the emails out.
Steve Judge:I got distracted a little bit.
Steve Judge:I do regret that I didn't do that project I was working on, but I didn't do the project because I was playing with my kids.
Steve Judge:They came home from school, so I ditched my work and play with them.
Steve Judge:Do I regret that?
Steve Judge:No, I don't regret that.
Steve Judge:Okay, so do you have regrets?
Steve Judge:Is a question that only you can answer.
Steve Judge:And I love it when I get to the end of the day and I just go, oh, what an awesome day.
Steve Judge:No regrets.
Steve Judge:No regrets at all.
Steve Judge:You know, I did this, I did that, I didn't do that, but that's okay.
Steve Judge:No regrets.
Steve Judge:And I think that's what I'm striving towards, to get to the end of every single day, every week, every month, every year, and say, no regrets.
Steve Judge:That's been brilliant.
Steve Judge:I couldn't have done any more to have no regrets.
Steve Judge:The answer is almost for my answer to success is about being the best that you can be.
Steve Judge:Now, that might not mean that you get all the gold medals or the trophies or the achievements that you're striving for, but you've done everything possible.
Steve Judge:You've been the best that you can be, and therefore you've got no regrets.
Steve Judge:That to me is contentment.
Steve Judge:So when I've got that, then I'll be content.
Steve Judge:I haven't got that yet.
Steve Judge:So that's what I'm striving towards.
Ricky Locke:I love it.
Steve Judge:Yeah.
Ricky Locke:And just you've inspired me to remember something I shared before about the idea of people playing quite safe and, you know, in the comfort zones.
Ricky Locke:And I often think about, like walking along, like a cliff edge or something.
Ricky Locke:And, you know, that whole thing about comfort zones and it's the old classic Peter Pan phrase, which is, well, what if I fall, know, jumping off the cliff, what if I fall?
Ricky Locke:And then obviously he says, but what if you fly, darling?
Ricky Locke:You know, there's that thing, isn't it, about sometimes I think we are conditioned to a path like I was as a kid.
Ricky Locke:You're going to go to school, Rick, you're going to leave, you might get a job.
Ricky Locke:You'll then work down the brick pits like my dad did, and then there's nothing wrong with that at all.
Ricky Locke:But then from that you'll have your life.
Ricky Locke:But then actually, what's more from that, take the blinkers off.
Ricky Locke:And what happens if I try something different or if I do something different?
Ricky Locke:And like my mom saying, you know how you can pay your mortgage?
Ricky Locke:What if I can pay my mortgage, Mum?
Ricky Locke:What if I double, triple my income?
Ricky Locke:The opportunities are limitless and like you said, you know, seizing opportunities.
Ricky Locke:But the thing I really love about this, which is so relevant with this podcast, is the being the best version yourself.
Ricky Locke:And I know from your first book about your dad saying to you, always in whatever you do, Steve, be the best that you can be.
Ricky Locke:You've briefly mentioned it just then, but what does this mean to you, being the best version of yourself?
Steve Judge:Been the best version of.
Steve Judge:I think I got that message when I was competing as an elite athlete.
Steve Judge: d champion two years running,: Steve Judge: It got to: Steve Judge:It was the World Championships in London.
Steve Judge:Home crowd brilliant.
Steve Judge:I was fit, healthy, going well.
Steve Judge:I arrived at the start line, the Italian was there, my nemesis who had beaten in previous years.
Steve Judge:And we set off, you know, we did the swim, we did the bike and we did the run.
Steve Judge:And it was on the run section where I needed to catch him.
Steve Judge:He was ahead of me and I was hunting him down.
Steve Judge:My goal was to find him.
Steve Judge:When I could see him, I knew I could catch him.
Steve Judge:If I could catch him, I knew I Could take him.
Steve Judge:And if I could take him, I could cross the finish line and beat him, become world champion for third year running.
Steve Judge:I found him, I saw him.
Steve Judge:I was catching up with him step by step.
Steve Judge:He was pulling away from me.
Steve Judge:I wasn't having any of this.
Steve Judge:All the training, all the preparation that I put that, put through as an elite athlete, coming around the final corner, crowds going crazy, sprint over the line, crossed the finish line, arms up in triumph.
Steve Judge:And I crossed the finish line in silver place.
Steve Judge:Second place, got the silver medal.
Steve Judge:But the look on my face and the photo captures it is just immense joy and pride and the look of success.
Steve Judge:Because when I crossed the finish line, the Italian beat me on that day by 30 seconds.
Steve Judge:Now the race takes about 1 hour 15, so 30 seconds isn't that long at all.
Steve Judge:But when I crossed that finish line, I knew that I couldn't have done any more.
Steve Judge:And I don't mean just on the day.
Steve Judge:I'm talking about the years, the months before all my preparation, my visualization, my meditation, my injury prevention, my equipment check, my nutrition, my mindset, my swim, my bike, my run, my everything leading up to that race, I've been the best that I could be.
Steve Judge:I had no regrets.
Steve Judge:Now on the day, my preparation, my breathing exercises, my visualization, the swim, the transition, the bike, the transition, the run, the finish, I've done it all.
Steve Judge:I couldn't have gone any faster.
Steve Judge:So that to me means being the best that you can be.
Steve Judge:When you're absolutely exhausted on the line, even feeling a little bit sick because you've pushed yourself so much, but you've got no regrets.
Steve Judge:That is what success is.
Steve Judge:That is what.
Steve Judge:Being the best that you can be.
Steve Judge:Transfer that into my business now, you know, am I doing everything in my business to make sure that I'm successful?
Steve Judge:I'm, you know, sharing my journey out to the masses.
Steve Judge:Well, yeah, I'm getting up at 5:30.
Steve Judge:What does that mean?
Steve Judge:Means I go to bed at 10 and I sleep well.
Steve Judge:I get up at 5:30, I'm writing my new book before I even get the kids up.
Steve Judge:Once the kids are up and gone to school, then I'm working on my business.
Steve Judge:I'm doing lead generation.
Steve Judge:I'm thinking out how I can better myself and better the business.
Steve Judge:So at the end of the day, I've got no regrets.
Steve Judge:Tonight I'm a Cub Scout leader, so I volunteer my time down at the local village and we're taking the cubs out for night hike.
Steve Judge:That's part of my personality.
Steve Judge:That's who I am.
Steve Judge:I'm also the president of Derbyshire Scouts, so it's really good.
Steve Judge:That goes hand in hand with it.
Steve Judge:But again, it's giving something back.
Steve Judge:I mentioned scouting already about what I've got out of it, so I'm giving something out to them.
Steve Judge:We're going on a night hike tonight.
Steve Judge:It's going to be really exciting and then I get back from that, I'll have tea with my kids and then I'll go to bed.
Steve Judge:By 10 o'clock, I'll blitz it.
Steve Judge:Today I'll be absolutely exhausted.
Steve Judge:Today will be a no regrets day.
Steve Judge:I can't do anymore.
Steve Judge:Just like I was when I crossed the finish line in Silver Place.
Steve Judge:I'm always striving to be the best.
Steve Judge:I'm always going for that gold medal, my gold.
Steve Judge:But if I don't quite achieve it, that's fine, as long as I've got the satisfaction that I've done a personal best.
Steve Judge:I've mentioned PBS already, you know, when I was a kid, so I'm still looking for those, PBS every single day.
Steve Judge:And that's what it means to me.
Ricky Locke:I think it's a fantastic summary of that.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, there's the old classic phrase, isn't there?
Ricky Locke:You know, shoot for the moon and if you land on the stars, then that's great.
Ricky Locke:And someone said to me recently, Ricky, you've got a quite big ambitious goal this year.
Ricky Locke:You want to get this podcast into the top 10 for self improvement.
Ricky Locke:What happens if you don't get in the top 10?
Ricky Locke:Well, it doesn't really matter, really.
Ricky Locke:It's.
Ricky Locke:That's the goal I'm working to.
Ricky Locke:It'd be great, obviously, if I do that, but like you said, if I've committed my time and I've committed to be the best version of myself and done everything that I can in my power to do that, then that's the win, isn't it?
Ricky Locke:That's the real gold there.
Ricky Locke:Because I've done the best version that I can and if it falls out of it, hey, do you know what I tried?
Ricky Locke:It's that thing, isn't it, about setting yourself that big, you know, kind of huge goal because you're still going to excel or achieve higher than everybody else if it's like a lower goal.
Ricky Locke:But I love the idea that you were talking about earlier on about you've got this five winning strategies and you got the 8%, 20%.
Ricky Locke:So tell us a little bit about that because that's coming from your new book, From Good to Gold.
Ricky Locke:So tell us about those five winning strategies.
Steve Judge:So, yeah, this is, this is fascinating because it's, I've got so much information and so much I want to give people, but you've got to simplify it.
Steve Judge:You can't just like blurt it all out.
Steve Judge:To give it comes some kind of a structure.
Steve Judge:And as time's gone, as I've literally been writing this book, it's, it's, it's lovely how it's evolved.
Steve Judge:It's evolved into some kind of a treasure map, which is.
Steve Judge:I love treasure maps.
Steve Judge:I love treasure hunts.
Steve Judge:Perfect for me.
Steve Judge:So first of all, you've got to find out.
Steve Judge:Your first one is you've got to find out what your goal is.
Steve Judge:Your goal, your opportunity, your love, your dream.
Steve Judge:And we do this exercise that helps people to find out, to visualize what it is they truly want.
Steve Judge:Not what they don't want, but what they do want.
Steve Judge:So once you find out what your gold is, then the next one is you've got to find your golden soul.
Steve Judge:Your golden soul is very much about your why.
Steve Judge:Why on earth are you doing this?
Steve Judge:What will you achieve by getting this?
Steve Judge:What will you, what do you miss by getting this?
Steve Judge:What difference will it make?
Steve Judge:How will you know when you've got it?
Steve Judge:It sort of goes into the NLP language a little bit because you need to know this for when the going gets tough, because that's when you're down on your knees.
Steve Judge:That's why you're going to think, why on earth am I doing this?
Steve Judge:This is crazy.
Steve Judge:Why am I getting up at 5:30 in the morning?
Steve Judge:Why am I traveling all this way?
Steve Judge:Why am I giving all this time?
Steve Judge:You've got to know why.
Steve Judge:And stick that in big letters on your vision board on your wall so you know why.
Steve Judge:The next one is your golden gear.
Steve Judge:This points towards the how.
Steve Judge:How on earth are you going to get there?
Steve Judge:So the three questions you've got to ask yourself to get there, it actually just comes down to one question, is what more can I do?
Steve Judge:What more can I do?
Steve Judge:What more can I do?
Steve Judge:What do you need to do to get to the top?
Steve Judge:What do you need to ask for help?
Steve Judge:Do you need to Google it?
Steve Judge:Alexa it?
Steve Judge:Do you need to, you know, ask for help?
Steve Judge:Do you need to train yourself?
Steve Judge:Do you need to do more marketing?
Steve Judge:Lead generation?
Steve Judge:Who do you need?
Steve Judge:You know, what do you need?
Steve Judge:Write that stuff down.
Steve Judge:Build up this mind map, as it were, of what you need to do.
Steve Judge:And when you think you've got all the answers, you're wrong.
Steve Judge:Okay?
Steve Judge:Ask for help, ask for more answers.
Steve Judge:Get a mastermind group and get more.
Steve Judge:So that's the golden gear.
Steve Judge:What gear do you need for this journey that you're going on to find your gold?
Steve Judge:The next one is your Golden Gang.
Steve Judge:Oh, my goodness.
Steve Judge:Your Golden Gang.
Steve Judge:So this is the chapter I'm writing at the moment.
Steve Judge:It's fascinating how it evolves.
Steve Judge:So the Golden Gang is who do you need with you to get there?
Steve Judge:But I've realized that there's three sections to that.
Steve Judge:So the first one is almost survival.
Steve Judge:Who'd you need initially to start off your journey?
Steve Judge:So when you're running your business, it might be you might need a business coach or somebody to bounce ideas off.
Steve Judge:You might be a website person or just some advice, maybe a networking group.
Steve Judge:As an elite athlete, it's just like getting your first coach.
Steve Judge:Who do you need just to start you off?
Steve Judge:After that, it's more about accomplishment.
Steve Judge:So who's going to take you up a next level?
Steve Judge:Oh, my goodness, this gets exciting.
Steve Judge:So who do you need in your gang that's going to take you there?
Steve Judge:SEO experts or, you know, social media or marketing experts?
Steve Judge:Some gurus.
Steve Judge:The name guru comes into this a little bit more as they're going to take you out to this next level.
Steve Judge:We'll find out who they are and connect with them.
Steve Judge:And when you can afford them, then you pay them, you start using them.
Steve Judge:Now the next one is fulfillment.
Steve Judge:Now, these people, you haven't quite gotten your Golden Gang yet, but by all means, put their name down for me and my Golden Gang.
Steve Judge:My this fulfillment chapter.
Steve Judge:This is the outer ring.
Steve Judge:If you imagine three rings, the inner ring, the middle ring, and the outer ring.
Steve Judge:These are people that I aspire to have on my.
Steve Judge:My Golden Gang.
Steve Judge:So I've got people like a chauffeur that will take me to my gigs.
Steve Judge:I know I'm too busy to drive myself.
Steve Judge:I'll have a helicopter pilot for my private jet and helicopter that I have, I'll have a massive.
Steve Judge:That will come out, give me a neck and shoulder mass.
Steve Judge:I have a dietitian nutrition downstairs preparing my food and I have a personal trainer to drag me over to the gym when I need it.
Steve Judge:And these people that I aspire to have and it's going to be great when I've got them.
Steve Judge:So I'm collecting names.
Steve Judge:I haven't got the money for them yet, but they're becoming.
Steve Judge:Don't worry.
Steve Judge:So that to me is my Golden Gang.
Steve Judge:The last one is your golden hour.
Steve Judge:Your golden hour.
Steve Judge:So this Splits everything down into when.
Steve Judge:It's like a five year plan.
Steve Judge:Think about your five year plan.
Steve Judge:Where will you be in five years time?
Steve Judge:Oh my goodness me.
Steve Judge:Helicopter pad, et cetera.
Steve Judge:So how much do I need to earn to achieve that?
Steve Judge:And what else will I have in my life in five years time?
Steve Judge:What about four years time?
Steve Judge:Where am I in four years time?
Steve Judge:Where am I in three years?
Steve Judge:Two years, one year?
Steve Judge:Okay, so we've got the one year plan.
Steve Judge:So let's split that into three months.
Steve Judge:Let's split that into one month, one week, one day, one hour.
Steve Judge:What am I doing this hour?
Steve Judge:I'm speaking to Ricky this hour.
Steve Judge:Okay, so what am I doing next hour?
Steve Judge:What am I doing this afternoon?
Steve Judge:Et cetera, et cetera.
Steve Judge:Build up your time so that you can use it efficiently, so that you can eventually achieve that five year goal.
Steve Judge:Because if you don't look after the hours and the days and the weeks, then the months and the years will just pass you by.
Steve Judge:So that's your golden hour.
Steve Judge:And that's all very, very vital.
Steve Judge:Those are the five winning strategies that you need.
Steve Judge:Obviously my book goes into a lot more detail, but fulfilling all of those elements, those strategies will take you on this treasure map to find your gold.
Steve Judge:At the end of this, you will find X marks the spot and that's where your gold is.
Steve Judge:Your gold, your opportunity, your love and your dream.
Steve Judge:And you will fulfill it.
Steve Judge:And you'll have achieved.
Steve Judge:You would unlock your potential and you.
Ricky Locke:Yes.
Steve Judge:Amazing.
Ricky Locke:That's brilliant.
Ricky Locke:I actually love that.
Ricky Locke:And we'll obviously talk about this in a second when the book is out because obviously you're currently writing that.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, I love that.
Ricky Locke:I love the idea.
Ricky Locke:And you can see it even when you're talking about the helicopter pad, the masseur, the chauffeur, you know.
Ricky Locke:Yeah.
Ricky Locke:And even me, it's not, it's not my.
Ricky Locke:But I start to relax and you can see like in a kind of state of NLP there, like we are taking responsibility to choose how we want to feel.
Ricky Locke:And I'm feeling like this feels really good.
Ricky Locke:I'm smiling.
Ricky Locke:So even from you doing that as well, having a simple process like that, I can imagine me doing that.
Ricky Locke:Think about who's going to be in mine and then start.
Ricky Locke:Just feel great.
Ricky Locke:I mean I could probably do that when I wake up.
Ricky Locke:Half life, if I wake up, do a bit of running.
Ricky Locke:I'm doing couch to 5k at the minute.
Ricky Locke:So I'm doing 5k.
Ricky Locke:I won't share my result.
Ricky Locke:You'll be pretty embarrassed I think, Steve, but we'll talk about this off the podcast.
Ricky Locke:But that kind of feeling of, you know, what.
Ricky Locke:What am I going to do to set myself up for the day?
Ricky Locke:Yeah, I'm going to talk about what I want, you know, you know, thing.
Ricky Locke:So, yeah, I love that.
Ricky Locke:That's really good.
Ricky Locke:One thing I'd love to say about it reminds me of the old classic mountain.
Ricky Locke:And I've said this before about I've got this goal.
Ricky Locke:It's on a mountain.
Ricky Locke:I don't know how I'm going to get there, but I'm getting there.
Ricky Locke:And I think Jim Rohn talks about, I'm going to die going up there, but I'm bloody going there.
Ricky Locke:You see that mountain?
Ricky Locke:Yeah, I'll be there.
Ricky Locke:But I think there's a lot about fear, you know, and there's a question going back a little bit about this, about these big dreams and ambitions.
Ricky Locke:There is going to become a point, like you said, where you go, why am I doing this?
Ricky Locke:You know, I had it recently when I thought, bloody hell, is this really the right thing?
Ricky Locke:And you have those moments where you think, I don't know.
Ricky Locke:And then maybe if I wanted to get someone in my circle that I might want to say, they'll never, you know, imposter syndrome.
Ricky Locke:I know we're big fans of the chimp paradox, Imposter syndrome.
Ricky Locke:That little chimp's going to say, why would that person want to be in your circle, Ricky?
Ricky Locke:Why are they going to help you?
Ricky Locke:So what?
Ricky Locke:How will fear.
Ricky Locke:How can we conquer fear?
Ricky Locke:And also, going back to your original story, you went through such.
Ricky Locke:I mean, to me, there's a point when you were rehabilitating, you're going back out on your bike and you talk about paper thin legs.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, that fear of what happens if you did fall off, you hit a curb, a car, you know, how do you conquer fear?
Ricky Locke:Not only in your.
Ricky Locke:You've conquered it in your own personal life and your business life now, but also for us going forward for where we want to be.
Ricky Locke:How can we eradicate that fear or conquer it going forward?
Steve Judge:Okay, there's two things I'd recommend.
Steve Judge:So one goes back to your golden gang.
Steve Judge:Make sure you've got the right people in your gang.
Steve Judge:I shared my new book.
Steve Judge:It might even have a hidden treasure hunt within it and you collect the clues and there'll actually be treasure hidden around the uk.
Steve Judge:And if you go and dig it up, you'll find some gold.
Steve Judge:But more of that later.
Steve Judge:Anyway, I get very excited about it because it's all about marketing and promotion.
Steve Judge:And I shared this with my family because I went on holiday last year to Chroma and we sat around, so there's like eight of us, because my brother was there with his family and I shared about my book and about this treasure hunt and what have you.
Steve Judge:And they all looked at me and said, well, that, that would never work.
Steve Judge:I said, why?
Steve Judge:Well, surely somebody would see you burying it or somebody would dig it up before, or you might forget where it is or somebody will just, you know, solve the clue.
Steve Judge:And then they would just share it on the Internet and they just literally tore it apart bit by bit.
Steve Judge:And I felt so demoralized, I thought, oh, cheers guys.
Steve Judge:I was really excited about that.
Steve Judge:Now I explained the same philosophy to my mastermind group.
Steve Judge:Mastermind group is a group of people who are like minded, who may be in the same job that for me, they're professional speakers and they help, I help them, they help me.
Steve Judge:And I shared this vision of having a treasure hunt and they all looked at me and went, that sounds amazing, Steve.
Steve Judge:That sounds really good.
Steve Judge:That would be so good for marketing.
Steve Judge:That would be really.
Steve Judge:You might even get on the one show with something like that.
Steve Judge:Yeah, I know, it's great, isn't it?
Steve Judge:Make sure you've got the right people in your golden gang.
Steve Judge:And if you haven't got the right people, then move them out.
Steve Judge:You end up being an average of the five people you spend most of your time with.
Steve Judge:Make sure you spend the right time with the right people.
Steve Judge:So.
Steve Judge:And that eradicates fear as well, because the wrong people will inject fear into you without realizing it.
Steve Judge:They're just trying to help.
Steve Judge:Of course they are.
Steve Judge:You know, but they say, oh, that, that sounds a little bit risky.
Steve Judge:Or, you know, you might not achieve that.
Steve Judge:Have you thought about this side?
Steve Judge:And of course you have.
Steve Judge:You don't need somebody else to tell you that.
Steve Judge:So this brings me on to the other philosophy that I use, which is neg Med.
Steve Judge:Negmed is negative meditation.
Steve Judge:So you sit down, you close your eyes, but instead of thinking about all the good stuff, which I do a lot, I do all the visualization about what my helicopter pad is going to be looking like in the helicopter pilot, what his name is.
Steve Judge:That's the visualization which makes me smile.
Steve Judge:Negative is the negative stuff.
Steve Judge:So you go through the philosophy of what you're doing today, this week, this month, the five year plan.
Steve Judge:A good example actually is I use this as an elite athlete when I was about to compete in The World Championships.
Steve Judge:Let's use this as a professional speaker.
Steve Judge:So I've got a big gig coming up, a thousand or so people in the audience, and I'm a little bit nervous about it.
Steve Judge:Of course I am.
Steve Judge:So I do my neg med, my negative meditation, and all of those fears jump out at me.
Steve Judge:Steve, what if you get there late?
Steve Judge:Steve, what if the tech doesn't work?
Steve Judge:Steve, what if they don't laugh at the bits that they're supposed to laugh at?
Steve Judge:Steve, what if you fall over on the stage?
Steve Judge:Steve, all of this stuff, it's horrible.
Steve Judge:And then I go, okay, okay, enough already.
Steve Judge:So I then open my eyes and I deal with them, every single one of them, Right?
Steve Judge:What if I don't get there?
Steve Judge:Well, let's Google Earth it.
Steve Judge:Let's find out where it is.
Steve Judge:I tell you what, I'm so nervous.
Steve Judge:Such a big event.
Steve Judge:I'm even going to get there the day before.
Steve Judge:Right, sorted.
Steve Judge:Happy.
Steve Judge:Yeah.
Steve Judge:Right, what's next?
Steve Judge:The tech might not work.
Steve Judge:Right, well, I'm getting there the day before, so let's see if we can go in the day before and check all my tech out.
Steve Judge:Yeah?
Steve Judge:Sorted clicker, Sorted.
Steve Judge:Batteries, spare batteries, got it all sorted, spare clicker, et cetera.
Steve Judge:Okay, what if they don't laugh at the funny bits?
Steve Judge:Oh, my goodness.
Steve Judge:Really?
Steve Judge:Okay, well, let's rehearse.
Steve Judge:Let's rehearse again.
Steve Judge:Let's get my mastermind group to hear me rehearse and see if they laugh at the funny bits.
Steve Judge:Everybody's laughing.
Steve Judge:Good.
Steve Judge:Tick.
Steve Judge:What's next?
Steve Judge:You go through every single part, everything that gives you fear, and you sort that stuff out so that when you get to the start line, when you get to the stage, you are literally saying, bring it on.
Steve Judge:I've got this.
Steve Judge:I'm ready for you.
Steve Judge:You've got rid of all your fears and that's what you need to do.
Steve Judge:And a lot of people don't do that.
Steve Judge:They just push those fears down.
Steve Judge:That does not work.
Steve Judge:The fears are still there.
Steve Judge:They will come up and they will bite you.
Steve Judge:When you get to the stage, when you get to your point, your golden hour, you want to be so happy and ready.
Steve Judge:You want to be saying, bring it on.
Steve Judge:You know, I say to this to the students when I speak to them at schools about them being nervous for their exams, and they get to their exams and they say, oh, I wish I'd done more revision.
Steve Judge:And you go, are you Muppet?
Steve Judge:You're an absolute.
Steve Judge:I can't believe you're saying this now.
Steve Judge:And if you took this three months ago, we could have done something about it.
Steve Judge:We've gotten a neg med and you could have done more revision.
Steve Judge:Stuff like that.
Steve Judge:You should.
Steve Judge:You could have lived your life with no regrets, being the best that you could be.
Steve Judge:So you get to that exam and you say, oh, my goodness, I'm so exhausted with all the revision I've done, I.
Steve Judge:My head is so full of facts and figures.
Steve Judge:Can we just get the exam over and done with?
Steve Judge:Bring it on.
Steve Judge:Brilliant.
Steve Judge:That's how you should be.
Steve Judge:Not, like, fearing all these things.
Steve Judge:If you.
Steve Judge:If you're fearing something, you've gone wrong.
Steve Judge:So get your golden gang sorted out and do your neg med as well.
Ricky Locke:Incredible.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, it's funny, isn't it, this.
Ricky Locke:This whole fear thing.
Ricky Locke:Fantasize exaggerations appearing real.
Ricky Locke:You have reminded me of a great quote by.
Ricky Locke:I think it was Jim Rohn.
Ricky Locke:It might be someone else I've got on my wall over here in my vision board, which is not everyone's gonna like you.
Ricky Locke:So what?
Ricky Locke:And it's like a film, isn't it?
Ricky Locke:If me and you went to go see a film, we might come out and talk about two different opinions you might really like.
Ricky Locke:And I thought, now it's rubbish.
Ricky Locke:You didn't like it.
Ricky Locke:And that's just goes to show, doesn't it, that, you know, it doesn't really matter, but there's a choice.
Ricky Locke:So the situation you talked about earlier on, showing your book or telling people, your family about your book, and they gave you a bit of a.
Ricky Locke:Maybe a different kind of feedback you weren't ready for, but your mastermind were kind of pumping up.
Ricky Locke:Same thing for me.
Ricky Locke:I received and I learned my lesson, Steve, for have a backup intro just in case someone reads out the wrong intro.
Ricky Locke:Which happened to me literally in the last week at the psa.
Ricky Locke:So, yeah, so I've learned to deal with that.
Ricky Locke:But also there's this choice, because feedback is a gift.
Ricky Locke:And I often say that feedback is a gift and sometimes it's unwrapped.
Ricky Locke:People are good at giving feedback and some people aren't very good at giving feedback, but it's a choice.
Ricky Locke:I might take that feedback, like you took that feedback from your family and say, that's hindering.
Ricky Locke:It's not helping, but it's okay.
Ricky Locke:You know, I might say to my mum, mum, I'm going to go climb Everest next week.
Ricky Locke:She'll be like, oh, my God, Ricky, you can't do that.
Ricky Locke:Oh, my God, you're going to be.
Ricky Locke:You know, can't do that.
Ricky Locke:But it's okay because that's my family.
Ricky Locke:I appreciate that.
Ricky Locke:But that's not the Golden Gang.
Ricky Locke:You know what?
Ricky Locke:Like us, you know, mutual friend Jake Richings, he's in my mastermind group.
Ricky Locke:And it's great for me to say, this is what I'm thinking.
Ricky Locke:What do you think?
Ricky Locke:And they'll share them ideas and I can take it away.
Ricky Locke:So there is that big thing, is there, about choice, about having a choice and choosing who's going to be in your Golden Gang?
Ricky Locke:And who do you actually want to listen to, you know, because we've all got different opinions.
Ricky Locke:But, Steve, I would love to carry on talking to you forever because I think there's so much in terms of your personal story, in terms of what you're doing now, I can see a very bright, big future.
Ricky Locke:I think I see you, Steve, maybe as me, maybe I think we're only about 10.
Ricky Locke:10 years, maybe, I don't know, 10, 15 years, maybe age difference.
Ricky Locke:But I certainly see in terms of your story and where you're going, very similar to you.
Ricky Locke:If someone tells me, ricky, you're not going to achieve something, it's like red rag to the ball.
Ricky Locke:It's not like I want to prove them wrong.
Ricky Locke:It's like I kind of.
Ricky Locke:My purpose is I want to prove to people and show people that you don't have to live this mediocre life.
Ricky Locke:You can achieve extraordinary things.
Ricky Locke:We all have the power to do it.
Ricky Locke:But I'd love to finish up with a couple of questions, Steve, if that's all right.
Ricky Locke:What is your top tip for being the best version of yourself?
Steve Judge:I think this comes into my values.
Steve Judge:And somebody asked me what my values were and I struggled for ages and I came with a long list and then I narrowed it down and it comes down to the message that I give out all the time, which is the top tip, which is don't lean on your excuses.
Steve Judge:Turn your excuses into challenges.
Steve Judge:Now, sometimes there's a little bit of, you know, is that a fact or is that an excuse?
Steve Judge:Well, sometimes only you can answer that.
Steve Judge:But if it's raining outside and you were going to go for a run and now you're not going to go for a run because it's raining outside, that's an excuse, I would say, because you can put a coat on and you can still go outside, don't lean on your excuses.
Steve Judge:However, if you've suddenly broken your leg, then you can't go for a run.
Steve Judge:That's a fact.
Steve Judge:Okay, so make sure you get the two rights.
Steve Judge:But yeah, don't in on your excuses.
Steve Judge:Turn your excuses into challenge and push yourself forward.
Ricky Locke:Brilliant.
Ricky Locke:And final question here is, which is if anybody's listening to this podcast right now, they're either a fan of yourself or they listen to this podcast and they're between A to B.
Ricky Locke:You know, they've got this idea of where they want to go and they might be feeling a little bit lost.
Ricky Locke:Maybe they've fell off the wagon, they've dealt with some feedback from their family that's criticized their book or something like that, and they're feeling a little bit lost.
Ricky Locke:Now, what advice would you say to them right now to get back on, to get to where they want to be?
Steve Judge:Just focus.
Steve Judge:Just close your eyes and focus about what you want.
Steve Judge:Focus on what you want to achieve.
Steve Judge:There's so many people that focus on what they want to avoid.
Steve Judge:I don't want to be fat.
Steve Judge:I don't want to be unhealthy.
Steve Judge:I don't want to be poor.
Steve Judge:I don't want to be lonely.
Steve Judge:I get that.
Steve Judge:But stop.
Steve Judge:Stop focusing on what you want to avoid.
Steve Judge:Just focus on what you want to achieve.
Steve Judge:Focus that.
Steve Judge:You want to be fit, healthy, in a lovely relationship.
Steve Judge:You want to be rich, successful, you want to be happy.
Steve Judge:Surely you want to be happy.
Steve Judge:Because after all, I believe that that's what life is all about, about being unhappy.
Steve Judge:So unlock your potential, live the extraordinary life that you deserve and go for it.
Ricky Locke:Amazing.
Ricky Locke:So, Steve, if we.
Ricky Locke:How can we find out more about you?
Ricky Locke:And also, is there an update about the book?
Ricky Locke:When will the book be out?
Ricky Locke:Is there a date, provisional date for it coming out?
Steve Judge:There is a date.
Steve Judge:You've got to have a date.
Steve Judge:You've always got to have a date.
Steve Judge:So the date of launch is going to be November this year.
Steve Judge:However, I'm only hesitating on that because whether that's not the ideal time to launch a book because of the Christmas and all the other books that are out there.
Steve Judge:So what I'd say is, watch this space.
Steve Judge:And what I mean by that is contact me on social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.
Steve Judge:So I'm all over there, please connect with me.
Steve Judge:And I say that one to follow me.
Steve Judge:But also if you've got any questions you can ask me on social media, that's absolutely fine.
Steve Judge:Or go to my website.
Steve Judge:There's an email phone there as well, so you can just contact me there.
Steve Judge:And that's www.steve-judge.co.uk fantastic.
Ricky Locke:And Steve, it'd be my pleasure and honor.
Ricky Locke:Actually, if I can, I'd love to read out one paragraph from the final of you.
Ricky Locke:I think it'd be a great way to end this.
Steve Judge:Okay.
Ricky Locke:And we'll put a link.
Ricky Locke:Yeah, we'll put a link in the show notes.
Steve Judge:I'm nervous about which one you're gonna read out.
Steve Judge:There's a lot of stuff in there.
Steve Judge:There's some poems.
Ricky Locke:There is, yeah.
Ricky Locke:I am.
Ricky Locke:I'll put a picture of this.
Ricky Locke:I'm a booker file.
Ricky Locke:And there is.
Ricky Locke:Some people are going to hate me because I've folded corners over.
Ricky Locke:But I just think this is really apparent for helping people to get between A to B.
Ricky Locke:And so I wrote this last night and thought this would be quite a nice way to end the podcast.
Ricky Locke:So this is from Steve's book, Don't lean on your Excuses.
Ricky Locke:And Steve says at the end of the book, an analogy that I use is if you imagine me swimming in the sea, I'm a long way out and I'm a good swimmer, but my goal land is far away.
Ricky Locke:The only way that I'm going to get there is to keep swimming.
Ricky Locke:I have to keep working hard because if I stop, I'll drown looking up and see my goal.
Ricky Locke:That thing that drives me onwards is what motivates me now.
Ricky Locke:I could hang onto a life raft to be safe, a bit like having a part time job to stay buoyant.
Ricky Locke:But if I do that, if I hang on to this life raft, then I'm never going to reach my goal.
Ricky Locke:So I've pushed any such life raft away and I swim indomitably every day towards my goal.
Ricky Locke:Keep swimming, I think.
Ricky Locke:Love it.
Ricky Locke:Steve, thank you.
Ricky Locke:Been an absolute pleasure.
Ricky Locke:Thanks for coming onto the show and yeah, best wishes to you and for the book this year.
Ricky Locke:Thank you.
Steve Judge:Thank you very much.
Steve Judge:Ricky, thanks for the opportunity.
Ricky Locke:Wow, what a great episode.
Ricky Locke:Steve, thank you so much for coming onto the Unlocked podcast.
Ricky Locke:You've definitely inspired me to start thinking about pretty much everything I do in my business and my life and to not lean on my excuses and start living with no regrets.
Ricky Locke:And the whole theme of taking responsibility is something that I'm going to adopt going forward and just thinking about things in a different way.
Ricky Locke:So, Steve, thank you so much for coming onto the podcast.
Ricky Locke:For anybody still listening to this point, thank you so much for supporting the podcast and if you did enjoy it, then head over to Apple Podcasts or podchaser.
Ricky Locke:Leave us a review and a rating.
Ricky Locke:It lets me and Steve know that you enjoyed the episode.
Ricky Locke:But it gets this inspirational story shared to more people now.
Ricky Locke:As always, thank you.
