Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Hello Monarch fans and welcome to the Hudson Homers podcast.
Speaker:CB is here with us, as always, coach Finwood joining us
Speaker:as well as he usually does.
Speaker:And again, Finn, we were just talking about before you hopped on here,
Speaker:just we're super grateful to have you join us and, and be on here.
Speaker:Give us some legitimacy instead of, you know, just two nerds talking
Speaker:about baseball all the time.
Speaker:Well, I appreciate you guys having me.
Speaker:Y'all make it fun, you know, um, try, you know, any, any information
Speaker:we can get people out there about the program, uh, you know, and,
Speaker:and anything as it pertains to ODU baseball, this is a great way to do it.
Speaker:Uh, it's a, it's a grassroots way to do it, which I love.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, you know, it's not, um, I, I think it's, for me, you know, it has
Speaker:been a fun way to kind of replace the, the Extra Phoenix podcast.
Speaker:'cause we, I really enjoy, uh, getting the opportunity to do this with you guys.
Speaker:So Thank you.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well.
Speaker:Speaking of recognition and all that fun stuff, we gotta start off
Speaker:with the biggest news of the week.
Speaker:Ohoh Ohoh,
Speaker:coach Finwood congratulations on setting the all time wins record for ODU Baseball.
Speaker:Well, thank you very much.
Speaker:Um, I appreciate that.
Speaker:I wish we'd have played a little better on the next day, but we played pretty well.
Speaker:The, we played pretty well the day that we got it.
Speaker:I was, I was proud of that effort.
Speaker:Um, and, you know, I told Harry Min a story on it and
Speaker:I said, it's just humbling.
Speaker:'cause you look out there on the wall and, and you see Bud and you see Pat, you see
Speaker:Nudie, and you see Guz and just a, a guy.
Speaker:I, I didn't know Coach Metheny, um, other than by reputation.
Speaker:You know, I, I was coming to camp here as a high schooler in, in
Speaker:83, which was when Mark was here, uh, Newman as the head coach.
Speaker:And I learned a lot of baseball from Martin Newman, both as a, as a. High
Speaker:school player as a college player, working camps here, and then as a college, young
Speaker:college assistant, working camps here.
Speaker:Same thing from Pat McMahon after he took over for Nudie.
Speaker:And obviously same thing for from Gus.
Speaker:So, um, you know, to have, to be able to have more wins than, than all those
Speaker:guys is, uh, gratifying, humbling.
Speaker:And, you know, it means we've had a lot of good players and a lot
Speaker:of good assistant coaches that have put a lot of time into this.
Speaker:And, um, you know, it makes it doubly frustrating when you're, when you're not
Speaker:playing that great, I can tell you that.
Speaker:Um, I, you know, it's like sometimes you're not that far away, but your
Speaker:miles away at the same time and you know when it's, when you're pitching
Speaker:well, um, and just not scoring enough runs or maybe playing enough
Speaker:defense, you can usually feel like.
Speaker:You can get that figured out.
Speaker:Um, when you're, when you're not pitching well, it, it just grinds on you, man.
Speaker:It causes sleepless nights 'cause
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:When you don't, if you don't pitch, you're just not gonna have a chance and
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, the issue for us right now is just, uh, I mean we played
Speaker:six conference games and, uh, giving up 57 runs, uh, almost 10 a game.
Speaker:And, and you know, we've, uh, our average start has been under two innings.
Speaker:Um, so we're actually probably pretty fortunate to be two and four.
Speaker:Uh,
Speaker:yeah, I'll say it's hard to win two that way.
Speaker:Ha,
Speaker:having said that, uh oh.
Speaker:Oh,
Speaker:uh oh.
Speaker:We lost Finn temporarily, but
Speaker:he was, he, he gots talking about that pitching, so he just, he said, forget it.
Speaker:I'm, I'm not doing,
Speaker:he, he, he made it, uh, he did not make it outta the second either, so that
Speaker:Oh, all but
Speaker:to pick up a little
Speaker:difficulties.
Speaker:We got him back.
Speaker:We're back.
Speaker:I hit, I hit the wrong button.
Speaker:Um, but like we were saying, you know, uh, we've, we've swung the bats enough
Speaker:and, you know, mix and matched enough on the la you know, the two Fridays to come
Speaker:back from, you know, win those games and, but you just can't be down by five or six
Speaker:runs right off the bat, every, every game.
Speaker:That, that's hard on that.
Speaker:I
Speaker:was gonna ask, do you think it, it makes it a lot harder as a hitter
Speaker:when you're down that much every time.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and the thing is on Saturday, you know, the last two series.
Speaker:Troy and App State have thrown their best guys on Saturday.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, we've actually done a good job against their Friday guy.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, uh, both, both times.
Speaker:But, um, when you get down by five or six on Saturday and they got
Speaker:their best guy on the mound, I mean, that makes it doubly tough.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Um, I I actually thought we did a decent job against their guy this Saturday.
Speaker:We got his pitch count up, and if we could've been in that game, it
Speaker:might've been a little, little bit.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, you got him out in the fifth inning.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So I mean, we, we've, we've, we've been through every iteration of this.
Speaker:I, I, I promise you, I've never had a weekend where we, not that they
Speaker:were guys you thought were gonna go five or six cities, but started, you
Speaker:know, three true freshmen, um, three freshmen, uh, on a conference weekend.
Speaker:Uh, and, and it was just the way we wanted to work it out.
Speaker:Having said that, I thought that, um.
Speaker:I thought that JJ Gatti came in and threw the ball Well for Saturday.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Was what we needed to see him do, get out there when we
Speaker:were behind and just go work.
Speaker:Uh, he gave us four good innings.
Speaker:I thought that was bests he's thrown this year against, you
Speaker:know, uh, quality opponents.
Speaker:Um, still gotta get KY back on track.
Speaker:He's had a little bit of a hip flexor thing and I think
Speaker:that's affected him some.
Speaker:Um, you know, on the positive note of the pitching, uh, I, I thought Friday, uh,
Speaker:pat Johnson, who I know is coming on the show later, you know, a second Friday in
Speaker:a row, throwing him in there early down.
Speaker:And he is given up a couple runs, but he's kind of settled things down
Speaker:for us and allowed us to get back and then take the lead in those games.
Speaker:Um, and, and we were able to expand that one, you know, on Friday,
Speaker:so we didn't have to use Kellen.
Speaker:Um, and man, I thought Kellen was just.
Speaker:You know, so tough yesterday he just gave us everything he had.
Speaker:I mean, probably doubled the amount of pitches he's ever thrown here in
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And we knew he was on Femes going in the ninth.
Speaker:We were trying to get one more out of him and you know, it just didn't work out.
Speaker:But, um, that's, that's kinda was the gist of that game.
Speaker:They kept one more on us to death after we made it seven, six.
Speaker:And you just have to get some shutdowns after those innings.
Speaker:You know, you get six runs, you back in it, you got the momentum and the lead
Speaker:off gots a double and they would've scored that except they made a base run
Speaker:there at third, you know, got in tag on.
Speaker:Yeah, on a fly ball.
Speaker:Yeah, we got kind of looked out there.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:yeah, Kellen
Speaker:gets his guts out.
Speaker:I thought.
Speaker:Like, I think Kellen was fantastic.
Speaker:He's just got, you know, humongous character and big
Speaker:balls and he really cares.
Speaker:Um, you know, I was
Speaker:thinking during the game how amazing it is.
Speaker:You know, a couple years ago he was like the rookie, the righty one out guy.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:And now he's the guy.
Speaker:You're like, Hey, we're gonna go get him to every single second,
Speaker:every single pitch we can get him.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, the thing is we'd love to have a guy like him somewhere else
Speaker:on the staff that we could do that.
Speaker:And I mean, if we could've, you know, they scored six runs with two outs.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Uh, in the third inning yesterday we're like one pitch away from
Speaker:getting outta that so many times.
Speaker:But you gotta make pitches, you know, you gotta, and you can say what you want.
Speaker:Well, there's single all singles, it doesn't matter.
Speaker:Well, that was a great example of you gotta put the ball in
Speaker:play if you put the ball in play.
Speaker:Good stuff happens.
Speaker:I mean, that was like, I was, I was as, uh, annoyed as anybody
Speaker:'cause they were just getting a lot of lucky nonsense all weekend.
Speaker:But you know, when you put the ball in play, that's gonna happen.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and
Speaker:they, and look man, this is how it's going when it ain't going great too.
Speaker:Like they made a number of diving plays.
Speaker:Like, oh, same field of Rob Cup, extra base hits third base
Speaker:made diving play second baseman.
Speaker:So you gotta give them credit.
Speaker:They made the plays.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But you know, when it's going good for you, those balls seem to drop in.
Speaker:And um, you know, they, their coach was saying, man, that that happened to them
Speaker:the week before at home Against Coastal.
Speaker:Like they, nothing dropped and everything Coastal had dropped.
Speaker:So it's baseball, it happens.
Speaker:You gotta fight your way through it.
Speaker:Um, I think this weekend we're gonna start this, this week.
Speaker:Um, and we can recap any of the games a as we go if you want from last week.
Speaker:But, um, we got William and Mary home tomorrow.
Speaker:We move that game up to three o'clock, uh, 'cause of cold attempt.
Speaker:So we're gonna start ezio again.
Speaker:He's gonna be on the pitch count though because he is gonna
Speaker:come back on Sunday and start.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:and he was phenomenal on Wednesday against nor State.
Speaker:I mean, that's the guy you've been wanting to see.
Speaker:Yeah, I didn't realize he only threw 44 pitches in that game.
Speaker:Four innings
Speaker:standing.
Speaker:Yeah, he would see three strikes and you know, the breaking ball is best.
Speaker:I've seen it.
Speaker:So hopefully he can build off that and do it again tomorrow.
Speaker:You know, it'll probably another 45 pitch type limit thing.
Speaker:Um, and we're gonna, we're gonna start KY on Friday and Gati on Saturday
Speaker:and those guys just gotta do it.
Speaker:I mean, they're our best option to get into a game.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:And have some other bullets to fire as the game moves along.
Speaker:So, uh, you know, it was good See Ef get back out there.
Speaker:Morales?
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:He hit the ball hard.
Speaker:Didn't have a ton.
Speaker:You know, he had two hits on on Saturday off the bench and then.
Speaker:You know, his first, first couple at bats, he hammer a couple balls and a
Speaker:couple diving catches, you know, and, um, that, that can get frustrating.
Speaker:But it's good to see him make, make good contact for sure.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, in, on, on those games.
Speaker:So we need to get that bat back in the lineup.
Speaker:It gives us another guy that, you know, can, can be a threat offensively.
Speaker:So, um, yeah, we uh, we gotta figure something out, you know, at third
Speaker:base too, because we're just not getting any production there and
Speaker:we're making too many routine errors.
Speaker:So, um, you know, we'll see.
Speaker:Is
Speaker:there any thought of, I know Evan Holman has, you know,
Speaker:he worked out some at third.
Speaker:Is there any thought of, I mean, obviously
Speaker:yeah, I think the next guy's experience.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think the next guy's Cole McKenna.
Speaker:Yeah, sure.
Speaker:The thing is, Evan can catch the balls right at me.
Speaker:He doesn't have much range, you know, third base is hard in college baseball.
Speaker:It is
Speaker:hard.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Screamers.
Speaker:You got the choppers, you got, you know, it, it, it's a,
Speaker:it's a challenging position.
Speaker:I think it's a very, uh, people take it for granted how hard it is.
Speaker:You get the throw of the bunts, um, those kind of things, you know.
Speaker:And, um, so we, uh, you know, I think we're going to give
Speaker:Cole Cole a shot over there.
Speaker:I mean, he, he's a different type of player.
Speaker:Like he's another runner, you know, he can steal bases and blunt and, you
Speaker:know, you just gotta get the ball play.
Speaker:He is a freshman, so, but he's played, you know, sparingly.
Speaker:But he's, he's shown some good things and
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, I think we'll give him a chance prior these weekday games and see how he does.
Speaker:Um, you know, TJ's, TJ's continuing to have good at bats.
Speaker:I think I let Scotty swung a bat a little better this weekend.
Speaker:Um, you know, Zedalis had big home run for us yesterday, and it guy dove
Speaker:and robbed him of a hit in the first St inning, which, you know, probably
Speaker:would've got, gotten us going right there.
Speaker:Um, well,
Speaker:TJ injured one of the monarchists, uh, or no, I'm sorry, Tyler.
Speaker:Tyler injured one of the monarchists with his, uh, his laser beam home run.
Speaker:Uh, Aaron Aaron's right there I think.
Speaker:Trying
Speaker:that, huh?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Bounce.
Speaker:Oh no, it was, it was straight line drive.
Speaker:You know, I always worry when I'm standing at the hitting facility that
Speaker:I'm gonna catch a foul ball on the side of the head or something like that.
Speaker:So I, I sat out the Sunday game.
Speaker:I was in the stands the whole time Aaron Zielinski is sitting to my
Speaker:left, and I mean, he, he crushed it.
Speaker:And I could see it just coming right at us.
Speaker:I could hear it as I was seeing it come towards me.
Speaker:And it was mainly at Aaron.
Speaker:I made the business decision, just sidestep a little bit.
Speaker:Aaron stuck his arm out, it hit his forearm, hit the seat behind,
Speaker:popped up and right into somebody's hands who immediately just.
Speaker:Put it in a bag.
Speaker:So we, we were cheering exciting, but
Speaker:that ball.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But Aaron's got this big stitch mark on his forearm from, uh, Zedalis there.
Speaker:Tell that.
Speaker:Yeah, Steph told me that she saw somebody try to catch it or, or attempt
Speaker:to catch it and um, I mean that ball was like one 12 off the bat, I think.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like that.
Speaker:So
Speaker:I understand exit velocities, that ball doesn't really slow
Speaker:down a whole lot before it
Speaker:gets into the
Speaker:stands.
Speaker:No, not until it hits something.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And it slowed down a little more then,
Speaker:and, and Mac hit his over the stands, right?
Speaker:Yeah, that was right over the top of my head.
Speaker:Um, it probably landed just short of where the catering truck is back there.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:I mean, it was a bomb porta
Speaker:potty maybe.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, yeah.
Speaker:I guarantee a one hop to porta potty, but that thing was
Speaker:still climbing over the seats.
Speaker:Yeah, that's an interesting view that you don't get a ton at the
Speaker:mid-major college level, you know?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The ball's going over the stands, it's kind of cool to, from the field
Speaker:side, it's kind of cool to see.
Speaker:You can usually tell when guys get one for sure.
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:Uh, but I
Speaker:think right before Mack wasn't that when somebody had the outfield
Speaker:had robbed, uh, what was it, Tyler hitting right before him.
Speaker:And then when Mac hit that one, I was like, you're not
Speaker:not catching that one buddy.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:Tyler actually got two hits robbed yesterday.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The, the third basement dove and got one a ground ball, and then.
Speaker:Uh, the right, you know, the center fielder got him on that.
Speaker:So, man, he's missed having a good day.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I'll give,
Speaker:didn't they,
Speaker:I'll give their centerfielder credit.
Speaker:Charlie Evans, he had just one inning.
Speaker:He had two amazing catches, one in the right center gap that I
Speaker:thought he had no chance to get to.
Speaker:And the other navigating the wall in the wind, uh, maybe the first
Speaker:visiting player that's gotten like a little bit of a golf clap from the
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The home fans.
Speaker:But I mean, it was, it was deserved after those two.
Speaker:We'll give him that credit.
Speaker:Yeah, he's a good player man.
Speaker:You know, he also hits lead off for him and, and he had a good
Speaker:weekend swinging the bat for him.
Speaker:So he is a, he is a good player for sure.
Speaker:Older guy.
Speaker:He is.
Speaker:Been there a while and, um, you know, they, um, you know, you
Speaker:gotta give them their credit.
Speaker:They battled at the plate and got enough ball in play to,
Speaker:you know, make stuff happen.
Speaker:Guys, it seemed like every time we looked up yesterday it was
Speaker:brothers on first and third.
Speaker:You know, we're calling it First, third Defense and, um, you know,
Speaker:it's just, it just, it, it, we need, our guys need to like pitching wise.
Speaker:Visualize better things happening for 'em.
Speaker:I feel like we're walking on, on ice a little bit out there at times
Speaker:instead of just stomping on pavement.
Speaker:Like, you know, they gotta get out there and make it happen instead of hope,
Speaker:uh, you know, is old, that old saying, wishing hope done left the building right.
Speaker:Like, work, you know, you gotta make it happen.
Speaker:And, you know, sometimes it's being more aggressive early
Speaker:in counts and forcing contact.
Speaker:I thought that's what JJ Gaddy did a better job of.
Speaker:He threw more fastballs, he attacked with his fastball and got ahead of the hitters
Speaker:and put them on their heels a little bit.
Speaker:And I thought that was a, a good step in the right direction for him.
Speaker:So, um, you know, these, these weeks when you got double, mid weeks,
Speaker:man, they're, they're interesting.
Speaker:I think you gotta,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Be careful about spacing your pitching out too much, uh, because you can not
Speaker:have enough guys to win either game.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, so, you know, I feel like we're gonna, we're gonna try to, and, and
Speaker:Tuesday you can throw more relievers on Tuesday because they got another day
Speaker:off if you wanted to use them Friday.
Speaker:So we're gonna throw more of our guys tomorrow and then, you know,
Speaker:just whoever's left on, on Wednesday at Richmond will have to get out
Speaker:there and, uh, do do their job.
Speaker:So, um, you know, we got a colder, colder day tomorrow with the Northeast wind.
Speaker:That's not gonna be a great day to hit.
Speaker:Um, so hopefully we can fill up strike zone, you know,
Speaker:gotta stay away from the walks.
Speaker:On those days you need to be able to play offense and, um, you know,
Speaker:get your bunts down footballs and play hit and run, things like that.
Speaker:I was gonna ask you too 'cause it's kind of this weird dynamic, right?
Speaker:Like JJ needs to throw more pitches into the zone, throw to more soft contact.
Speaker:Don't be too fine with the off speed.
Speaker:I feel like a lot of the other guys in the bullpen don't have as much of a swing and
Speaker:miss pitch as we've seen in years past.
Speaker:So I don't have access to that data analytics, but I know you all do.
Speaker:Are you seeing that with rate go down compared to last year?
Speaker:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:And some of that is we've got, you know, some young guys throwing that
Speaker:haven't really developed necessarily, they're breaking stuff to the
Speaker:extent it needs to be at this level.
Speaker:Um, and so it either is getting them in bad counts 'cause it's such a wasted
Speaker:pitch guys don't even offer at it.
Speaker:Or they're hanging it and throwing it down the middle and it's getting clobbered
Speaker:and you know, I think when that's the case, you know, the best two pitchers
Speaker:in baseball or fastball down in a way.
Speaker:And the fast ball end.
Speaker:If you can move both of those around, then you can put a hitter,
Speaker:a little bit guessing what's coming.
Speaker:And I think for some of those guys, we need to, you know, throw more fast
Speaker:balls on both sides of the plate.
Speaker:Um, some of our guys are, you know, only on one side of the plate,
Speaker:and I think the scout reports get out and, and some of those things.
Speaker:And, um, so it's, uh, it's definitely a challenge right
Speaker:now, you know, without a doubt.
Speaker:And, and like I said, I it, somebody's gotta make it happen.
Speaker:Um, yeah.
Speaker:You know, this is, this is who we have.
Speaker:Uh, ain't nobody coming up from aaa,
Speaker:midseason trades.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Not
Speaker:calling anybody up.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and so these are the guys, they gotta get better.
Speaker:Um, they gotta keep working and, and we need some guys to like, you know,
Speaker:visualize good things happening to 'em, uh, because they can, you know,
Speaker:and, uh, most all of them have had.
Speaker:You know, spurts of success.
Speaker:They just have to find a way to do it more consistently.
Speaker:So, you know, the two midweeks and then we leave, uh, fortunately
Speaker:they're two early games, and then we leave Thursday for mobile play.
Speaker:South th down there.
Speaker:Um, who we haven't, I haven't been to Mobile in a long time, man,
Speaker:since my early days at Western.
Speaker:Um, you know, and, and they got a beautiful ballpark now.
Speaker:I know.
Speaker:And, and, uh, it'll be a fun place to play.
Speaker:The weather's gonna be good and, um, they're off to a pretty good start.
Speaker:So it's, uh, you know, every series is.
Speaker:It's tough.
Speaker:You look at the, the Sunbelt, you know, rankings right now, I mean Coastal six
Speaker:and oh, picker Prize, and I saw they 10 run Rule JMU every game this weekend.
Speaker:So, oof.
Speaker:Yeah, they're obviously getting it going and, um, I think Marshall's
Speaker:five and one, they, they got beat one yesterday maybe at, at Georgia State.
Speaker:And, um, you know, uh, everybody else is, you know, 4, 2, 3, 3, 2,
Speaker:and four, right in that mm-hmm.
Speaker:That early season jumble of where you're at.
Speaker:Yeah, I, I didn't realize it until, uh, after a game.
Speaker:I've driven back home to Richmond.
Speaker:Yesterday I pulled up the Sunbelt standings.
Speaker:If we win one more game this weekend, we're in fourth, but
Speaker:because we lost, we're tied for 10th.
Speaker:So like the margin there is is small.
Speaker:I mean, coastal doing what they're doing at six and oh, down two
Speaker:of their top arms is insane.
Speaker:Three
Speaker:three,
Speaker:oh yeah, they're down.
Speaker:Basically.
Speaker:They're three guys being three guys.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Yeah, they're, they've got a plethora of riches on the mound, that's for sure.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They're, uh, they're starting to swing the bats, uh, a
Speaker:little bit, especially at home.
Speaker:So, um, they're, they're, they're tough to deal with, uh, right now, obviously.
Speaker:Um, so, uh, you know, let them keep beating everybody up.
Speaker:That's the way I look at it.
Speaker:So,
Speaker:you know, till we play.
Speaker:I
Speaker:wanted to talk to you about.
Speaker:Um, I, I don't think it's an excuse, but I do think it's a factor.
Speaker:Um, I thought this weekend is some of the worst umpiring we've maybe
Speaker:ever seen, uh, for a weekend.
Speaker:Uh, that, that, I mean, it was all three guys were awful.
Speaker:Um, you've got both sides arguing, getting warnings in pretty much every game.
Speaker:Uh, the strike zone, I mean, it's one of those, you can't even say
Speaker:like, oh, the strike zone's wide.
Speaker:The strike zone.
Speaker:The strike zone is just a moving target.
Speaker:And it was pitch to pitch.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And I always think, you know, too, you see, I like, I was bringing up
Speaker:that, you know, the, the pitch comes and there's like a, a clear pause.
Speaker:I'm like, that's 'cause the guy sit there, remember, well, I screwed him on the last
Speaker:pitch, so have to make up this pitch.
Speaker:Or I screwed 'em two pitches ago enough that I can't make up the,
Speaker:it's like they don't, they're not calling balls on strikes.
Speaker:So it's, I know how much you wanna say about it.
Speaker:I'm, I'm very happy to say it was, it was brutal.
Speaker:Awful, awful.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well it's, you know, whenever you see that, that pause you were talking about
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:I mean, after like, the first strike call and, and, and you
Speaker:see it and you go, oh God.
Speaker:Because that's exactly what you said.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It's like, it's like, then it's a guessing game and it's just like,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:it's not, you know, the good ones, there's
Speaker:no conviction, there's no, no sureness in what they're doing.
Speaker:They don't know the strike zone.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I, I, we, I looked at the Friday zone.
Speaker:It wasn't good the game we won.
Speaker:I didn't see the.
Speaker:The Saturday or Sundays.
Speaker:I mean, the Friday one seemed terrible until Saturday and Sunday happened.
Speaker:Now looking back like, oh, that Friday wasn't that bad.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Put him back there.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think in addition to that, I, I don't know how much I'm
Speaker:allowed to say about that.
Speaker:I think the big thing,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:I don't wanna get you in
Speaker:trouble, but We'll,
Speaker:we'll save,
Speaker:run the games the right way.
Speaker:Like, you know, man, oh man, the pitch
Speaker:clock
Speaker:was a mess.
Speaker:Uh, when, when you got everybody just screaming at you, yelling at you, 'cause
Speaker:you know, then that's not good, man.
Speaker:It's like the, the pitch clock that was more ridiculous than
Speaker:the strike zone this weekend.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:I've never seen pitch clocks go off that, that fast.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, no one had enough time to do anything and I finally asked the guy
Speaker:yesterday, what is the rush there?
Speaker:Why are we rushing?
Speaker:You know, and, and it's just like, what is going on here, man?
Speaker:Like this, this is not what this is about.
Speaker:A guy hit a foul ball and our guy didn't even have the ball back yet,
Speaker:and the hitter's like run walking back to the batter's box and the
Speaker:pitch clock's already going on.
Speaker:And that's not the way it's supposed to be.
Speaker:And for the Sunbelt games, I don't know if this is true for the whole season,
Speaker:but the umpire that's got third base has what looks like a remote control
Speaker:for a TV from like 1992 with some tape on it, resetting that thing.
Speaker:So it's not anyone in the press box.
Speaker:It's not anyone on the ODU side.
Speaker:It is run by the umpires.
Speaker:No.
Speaker:And that, and it does, it needs to be somebody in the press box in my opinion.
Speaker:Um, but right now with our setup the way it is, we just can't do it that way.
Speaker:So we, we use that controller.
Speaker:For scrimmages, you know?
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:So we can have a pitch stock and, and it works, but it, it's sometimes it glitches.
Speaker:And
Speaker:is it from 1992 is easy.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It might be.
Speaker:Got an old eco system
Speaker:controller.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It's a, it's an old, uh, Nintendo controller.
Speaker:Nari.
Speaker:That's
Speaker:awesome.
Speaker:Atari.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Play
Speaker:some,
Speaker:um, play
Speaker:some Frogger with it after the game.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I'm qualified for that job.
Speaker:Then.
Speaker:It still shouldn't make you turn it on before you're supposed to,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:No,
Speaker:I mean, we've had a couple situations.
Speaker:I mean, it is just like.
Speaker:The, the things that happen, you know, every day out there now, like, y'all don't
Speaker:know half of 'em, but they're comical.
Speaker:Like, I, you know, hey, replays down.
Speaker:Like, okay, well that's just, yeah, that's just, that's just a Saturday right now.
Speaker:Like Yeah.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:You know, and it is what it's, we're doing the best we can.
Speaker:It's, it's not a great production unfortunately.
Speaker:But yeah.
Speaker:It's, it's where we're at.
Speaker:So we, we try to work with it
Speaker:for, for what we have they're
Speaker:doing.
Speaker:Every time I'm out there, I'm just like, it's gonna be beautiful next year.
Speaker:'cause you look at it and you're like, man, this thing is gonna be a palace.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I'd like to see 'em start making a little more.
Speaker:I mean, if that roof taking forever, it looks like a nice roof, man.
Speaker:Golly day.
Speaker:Get the, let's get to the, it's a roof.
Speaker:Like let's get to the next.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I guess you want your roof to be well built.
Speaker:Certainly.
Speaker:So it doesn't fall on you.
Speaker:It's
Speaker:fair.
Speaker:It.
Speaker:I, I can't wait to, I walk, I snuck in there or not snuck.
Speaker:I walked in there, uh, yesterday morning.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:There's nobody in there yet, you know, and, um, walked, walked around
Speaker:and through, and it's coming along.
Speaker:You know, I'm looking forward to seeing drywall get put up and stuff like that.
Speaker:Everything's under roof and I think they were pumping all the, you know,
Speaker:water out from the rain with all that rain we had and everything, getting
Speaker:all, you know, uh, weatherproofed.
Speaker:Um, so it's, it's coming along.
Speaker:It's, you know, we had a recruit in and we got another one in tomorrow.
Speaker:Um, we're able take 'em through and show 'em where things are.
Speaker:That's fun.
Speaker:They can see that, but it's not nearly done.
Speaker:Um, when they're saying it's gonna be done July one.
Speaker:I mean, they got a lot of work to do.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:July one's getting a lot closer
Speaker:and I, yeah, and I think you, um.
Speaker:When you look at the, the seating bowl proper now and the, the roof
Speaker:and you see the, where the press box and the suites up top are gonna be,
Speaker:you can, you know, when that's full of Navy seats and everything done.
Speaker:It's gonna be a pretty impressive Yeah.
Speaker:Structure from Oh yeah.
Speaker:From both sides of it, you know, from the road side, the outside and the inside.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I drove by on Saturday 'cause I went to the cross and, you know, 'cause I don't
Speaker:go that by that side now that often.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And it's like, man, it really is.
Speaker:It's not dumb, but it looks impressive from the, uh, the 43rd
Speaker:street side when you drive by.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and that's cool.
Speaker:I mean, that, that's gonna be something that'll be neat for everybody
Speaker:to walk by every day, you know?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think we're all, we're all ready for it to, to be there.
Speaker:But I will say, you know, for what we have and what's been
Speaker:set up, it's still awesome.
Speaker:Like.
Speaker:Had the live music again on Saturday out there.
Speaker:We had great crowds.
Speaker:Like, we're good.
Speaker:I've seen a couple
Speaker:of urs.
Speaker:They were really good.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Nice.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:I heard it got warm up in the stands that sun beating down, you know,
Speaker:that's, that's better and cold though.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You got a nice, yeah.
Speaker:So my, yeah, my mom and dad said, oh, it was hot out there.
Speaker:I was like, well, yeah,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:It was, the breeze was nice though, 'cause the breeze was kind of blowing
Speaker:a little bit, so it was like naturally.
Speaker:See, uh, yeah, it, you get, you get it, uh, on the bottom of your chin too.
Speaker:'cause if it reflects off the seat in front of you, it's like you, you free
Speaker:tanning service at OD u baseball games.
Speaker:We have people out there sunbathing here, uh, in May.
Speaker:Uh, whatever brings you to the ballpark, both sides just turn over.
Speaker:We'll, we'll set a timer up for you to turn over.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So we'll get, we'll use the pitch clock for that.
Speaker:That'll work.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:10 pitch clocks and turn.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, you know, so I mean, we're, what, 20 we're 11 and 11 We're 22 games.
Speaker:Into this thing.
Speaker:You know, we got another week and we'll be halfway at the midway point.
Speaker:Um
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:And so it's, uh, you know, hopefully, we'll we can, we can turn the
Speaker:corner on this pitching thing, and I know Mike and the guys are,
Speaker:are certainly working hard on it.
Speaker:And it, it also becomes something you have to be careful that doesn't just become,
Speaker:uh, contagious to all of 'em, you know?
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:'cause success is like that.
Speaker:Success and failure are are like that a lot.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think, you know, it's like, you know, couple guys start hitting and everybody's
Speaker:hitting, a couple guys start pitching failure and everybody, a couple guys
Speaker:start not stop hitting and no one hits and it's like you have to pass it down and
Speaker:hopefully we can, you know, it's so many new guys throwing, um, for the most part.
Speaker:So they've just gotta.
Speaker:Keep learning and keep, keep trying to get better.
Speaker:Friday's a perfect time for Kuski to just go out there and give you six innings and
Speaker:set the tone for the rest of the season.
Speaker:Yeah, I, I think you're, you're looking for that one guy to do that.
Speaker:Set the tone and then it, it follows, I mean, we saw it last year with, you know,
Speaker:the many guys who are now in the minor league system now that when you needed
Speaker:that start, give you five strong innings, you, Dylan Brown could deliver that for
Speaker:you, or Blake could deliver that for you.
Speaker:Yep, yep.
Speaker:Um, and I think if you get one, it can be contagious the other
Speaker:way too, in a positive way.
Speaker:Well, no doubt.
Speaker:And I mean, obviously, you know, when you're not going to the bullpen in the
Speaker:second, or first or second or third inning on Friday, the rest of the weekend becomes
Speaker:a little easier to manage from a mm-hmm.
Speaker:A pitching standpoint as well.
Speaker:Um, so.
Speaker:You know, when you have to go there, that early man, by the time you get
Speaker:to Sunday, you're running on fumes.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Back there.
Speaker:I mean, we're throwing a couple guys that are, you know, been walkon
Speaker:to, uh, yesterday in that game.
Speaker:And, and so, um, that's, that's kind of where, where we need to
Speaker:be better at from the start in.
Speaker:You know, there's sometimes in the old school days, you know, I, they'd
Speaker:have some days where, you know, pro ball managers say, Hey, look,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:don't look, don't look in here for about seven innings
Speaker:because ain't nobody up there.
Speaker:I'm not even coming out to visit.
Speaker:Well, I just gotta eat 'em.
Speaker:Occasionally
Speaker:it decided,
Speaker:well, there was, there was one point this week, I can't remember who it was,
Speaker:it might have been ga but there was somebody who I thought you guys did that.
Speaker:It was kind of like, Hey, you're gonna figure this out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I feel like that's what he did.
Speaker:He did with GA at point, what we
Speaker:did with him.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and he needed to do that.
Speaker:And he did.
Speaker:But it's like, sometimes you gotta go, you, you decide, 'cause
Speaker:we're not saving you anymore.
Speaker:Like you can give up two or 15.
Speaker:But you gotta go figure it out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And I think sometimes we're guilty as coaches and is, and, and I
Speaker:haven't really been wired that way.
Speaker:I'm always, I always want to be aware of their arm health.
Speaker:Certainly you don't wanna run, leave somebody out there for 50
Speaker:pitches and then get it hurt.
Speaker:But I, I, I think guys lose the ability to work out a jam 'cause
Speaker:we're always going and saving them.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And that is a big time ability and a big time bullet to have in your gun.
Speaker:You know, can I work out of a jam?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I heard Roger Clemon say this once.
Speaker:He said, but to do that you gotta know what you can go to to do it.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:He goes, I knew I could go early in my career.
Speaker:I knew I could go to my breaking ball to get outta the jam if I had had to.
Speaker:I always had the fast ball, but maybe that day they were hitting the fast fastball.
Speaker:Later in my career, it was the split.
Speaker:You know, and Roger Clemon is one of those rare guys that
Speaker:threw no hitters a decade apart.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:And he was a completely different guy in each of those.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, the first one it was just fuzz and the big, big breaking ball.
Speaker:And the second one it was, you know, more location and the split.
Speaker:And so, like, I asked the question then what's, what's the bullet you're
Speaker:gonna fire to get outta the jam?
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, can you break off five bangers in a row, uh, breaking
Speaker:balls and get us in the dugout?
Speaker:Uh, you have to know that as a pitcher.
Speaker:And, and I think some of our guys don't know that because
Speaker:we're always saving them.
Speaker:Um, and I, I think that they need to figure that part out and you're
Speaker:saving them partially 'cause you're trying to win the game, you know?
Speaker:But I think there's some things training wise, you know, in the fall and things
Speaker:like fall's, the time to train it.
Speaker:Um, you know, if you're scheduled for three, and we've been talking
Speaker:about all this, we're, we're always trying to make sure guys are healthy.
Speaker:And you have to always have an eye on that in the practices, the scrimmages.
Speaker:But if you're supposed to have three innings a day and you can't get outta
Speaker:the first, then we're gonna leave you out there to get your brains beat out
Speaker:and you'll throw one inning today.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:But I think you gotta, there, there is a learning curve there for sure.
Speaker:Uh, especially with young pitchers.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:you can see it very inning to inning too.
Speaker:I mean, Sunday, Jackson o Conco, I mean, they couldn't touch 'em
Speaker:in the first two innings and then come back out for three and
Speaker:I think, and he started messing with the fastball out over the plate.
Speaker:He was throwing it in.
Speaker:He's got that good sinker, you know, his problem is the second time through
Speaker:the lineup, guys adjust to you.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:And so you gotta adjust to them.
Speaker:And he stopped throwing the sinker in.
Speaker:He was throwing it out over the plate and get on.
Speaker:And he got probably a little fatigue.
Speaker:Um, and it all happened so fast with two outs, like
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:it blew up fast, man.
Speaker:But he showed you what kind of potential he does have.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:and I think really maybe, I don't know, more so right now he's probably a one
Speaker:time through lineup type of guy 'cause he, the breaking pictures are still working.
Speaker:The off speed stuff's still a work in progress.
Speaker:I think the change up the head is breaking ball right now for him.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But that sink is a real pitch man.
Speaker:I mean, it's, guys are missing that thing by, you know, feet.
Speaker:Uh, and so, you know, maybe he can come in with some smoke coming out of his ears
Speaker:and help us out the bullpen that way.
Speaker:Well, he is got some nobody on.
Speaker:He is got that super high leg kick, which I, I swear I think some
Speaker:guys do get mesmerized by that.
Speaker:I know.
Speaker:It's amazing.
Speaker:A kid that tall can get his beat out.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:no,
Speaker:the first time I went and saw him, I, I'd seen him play before, but I
Speaker:hadn't seen him pitch until last year.
Speaker:And I was like, oh, Jackson, you're like six five.
Speaker:What are we doing here buddy?
Speaker:Getting all the leverage.
Speaker:All
Speaker:the leverage.
Speaker:Same.
Speaker:Hey, know something else.
Speaker:He's a pretty good hitter.
Speaker:He is a good hitter.
Speaker:He had a really good, every time
Speaker:I saw a, a golfer, if you remember that.
Speaker:He all, he's got tremendous hand eye coordination.
Speaker:He's
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:very athletic and I haven't forgotten that.
Speaker:We'd try not, you know, we didn't wanna overload him too much, but
Speaker:he is gonna pick up a bat again at some point this year to start.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:I love that.
Speaker:Alright.
Speaker:Um, and I think he'll be excited about that.
Speaker:And I was
Speaker:gonna say, I'm sure he'll love that.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's about it too because I, I think he's, I think he's
Speaker:got some hitting potential.
Speaker:Um, for sure.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Nothing gets that, that pitching staff more fired up and seeing one
Speaker:of their guys go out there and get an a I, I'll never, like the loudest I
Speaker:think I've ever heard the ODU U dugout is when Dylan Brown got in at bat
Speaker:against App State a couple years ago.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:I mean, it was wild.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We had, we had to put the d in the game and Yeah.
Speaker:So the pitcher had to hit and he and he hit a line drive on
Speaker:the first pitch smoked drive,
Speaker:man.
Speaker:Smoked that ball.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I thought we were gonna see a Dylan Brown walk off there.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That is all his fun.
Speaker:I could see that.
Speaker:Uh, you know who would be a blast to have that happen to would be Kellen Davis.
Speaker:Oh, man.
Speaker:Kellen was a good hitter in high school.
Speaker:I saw a game.
Speaker:He, he had four hits in a game.
Speaker:I saw
Speaker:he would be so fired up.
Speaker:He
Speaker:pitched five and had four hits, stole
Speaker:three base games over the place.
Speaker:It's all, they're, they're asking whose helmet they can borrow.
Speaker:They're trying to find some batting gloves.
Speaker:Uhhuh, they're trying to find a bat.
Speaker:And
Speaker:it all, it's all is a lot of fun to do that.
Speaker:I remember, uh, this years ago now, but, um.
Speaker:Is it Morgan McGuire?
Speaker:Mo Mo Morgan McGuire.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Mick Mo.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Mo swung and fall fell down three times.
Speaker:He took his hacks, man.
Speaker:He took his hacks, that's for sure.
Speaker:I think I put that in the back of his baseball card and then batting.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He said, coach, I, I'm not, I was not gonna get cheated.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But, well, you guys, I know you got PJ coming on and, um, I'm proud of him.
Speaker:He's, he's done a good job for us.
Speaker:He's kind of been that guy that steadied the ship.
Speaker:Um, you know, his first inning, he is been a little shaky, and then he
Speaker:is, and then he settled down and, and been, been good after that.
Speaker:So hopefully we can get that, that first inning be better.
Speaker:But he gives us a, a, an older veteran, kind of steady, he's pitched
Speaker:a lot of college baseball and you can kind of tell when he is out there.
Speaker:He's, he's, he's not un or unnerved, um, by any means.
Speaker:So, um, hopefully he'll keep doing that for us.
Speaker:Well, Finny, we appreciate you as always, all the insight.
Speaker:We'll be, uh, following along Tuesday, Wednesday with William, Mary and Richmond,
Speaker:and of course down in Mobile against South Alabama for the third weekend series.
Speaker:But thank you Finny
Speaker:Alright guys, go.
Speaker:Monarchs,
Speaker:go Monarch.
Speaker:Thanks, Finn.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Before we, uh, go to commercial here and then bring on Patrick, uh, I
Speaker:wanna talk about a couple other things that were going on around the ODU
Speaker:world over the past couple of weeks.
Speaker:Um, obviously Sunday had the memorial service for Lieutenant
Speaker:Colonel Brandon Shah Uh, about 3000 people were over there for that.
Speaker:Uh, so, you know, obviously a, a sad moment for ODU with everything that
Speaker:was going on, but, uh, you know, glad to see the, the full pomp and
Speaker:circumstance for him and a lot of people in the community coming out.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Uh, then unfortunately we had another loss in the ODU family.
Speaker:Uh, Justin Parker, um, probably Selma on social media, sporting news.
Speaker:7, 5, 7. Huge ODU fan.
Speaker:He is alum, I think he was oh seven or oh six, I can't remember what year.
Speaker:Uh, but if you've been to an ODU sporting event, you've probably seen him.
Speaker:Skinny guy, ODU tattoos all over his arms.
Speaker:So he is got, I think every logo was tattooed on him.
Speaker:Uh, unfortunately passed away about a week and a half ago.
Speaker:We got that news.
Speaker:Uh, I, I don't know if anyone uses the, the ODU mobile app where
Speaker:you can go and check in in games.
Speaker:He was the leader by far for all of those things.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Certainly sad to see him go.
Speaker:He was, I just talked to him at the UConn series just a few weeks ago, so
Speaker:definitely sad to see him go, uh, we're gonna figure something out for him.
Speaker:We're trying to get in contact with family and all that stuff
Speaker:and understand what's going on.
Speaker:But ODU meant a lot to him.
Speaker:He showed up and, uh, we're certainly gonna miss him at baseball
Speaker:games the rest of this year and everything else going forward.
Speaker:And the stuff he was dealing with, the 7, 5, 7, uh, sports,
Speaker:um, sporting news, that was great.
Speaker:I would, I honestly kind of met him after that 'cause I was just, you
Speaker:know, I take pictures of a high school game and I just saw this account
Speaker:that always had high school stuff, so I was like, well, I'll just see
Speaker:if he wants to coat tag and share it.
Speaker:And so he, you know, was always picking it up.
Speaker:And so anytime I just had some pictures of the local teams and, and I was
Speaker:talking to him one day after a game.
Speaker:He is introduced himself.
Speaker:Yeah, it was awesome.
Speaker:Really an awesome guy.
Speaker:And yeah, so, so shame we, we've lost both those guys.
Speaker:Um, yeah, it's just, uh.
Speaker:Yeah, tough couple weeks for, for ODU and everyone around it.
Speaker:So hopefully, you know, coming outta spring break, we can kind
Speaker:of see some brighter things going forward, but we will certainly miss
Speaker:Justin.
Speaker:That's one nice thing about sports.
Speaker:You know, sports, you, you have this thing that you can bring people together and we
Speaker:can root for a common thing, and, and you can, and, and again, remember those, those
Speaker:good times you had the people, I mean, I'm sure the same way with the, with the
Speaker:ROTC and, and, and that, you know, you can remember the way these people chose
Speaker:to live their lives and chose to, to find their joy and to, to focus on those things
Speaker:and the good stuff, which would, you know, what I'm sure both of 'em would've wanted.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:A lot of that messaging and the, uh, service yesterday for Lieutenant
Speaker:Colonel Shah of, you know, don't necessarily remember the bad time.
Speaker:Remember all the good times and everything that set you up going forward, so
Speaker:Sure.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:We're gonna take a quick break.
Speaker:We get back, we will have Patrick Johnson
Speaker:have some good times with Pat Johnson.

Speaker:Welcome back, Monarch fans to Hudson Homers.
Speaker:Uh, good talking with Finny.
Speaker:I mean, again, straight shooter, like he's not gonna sugar coat anything for you.
Speaker:He knows it's not going well right now, but
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:it could always be much worse.
Speaker:And we're what, one game out of being in the top four.
Speaker:So it's, I
Speaker:mean, you play two out of 10 weekends in the, in the conference, right?
Speaker:You got, I mean, what is that?
Speaker:Um, math is hard for me right now.
Speaker:24 more games.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:I I really, I was not gonna get it.
Speaker:I was at like 18.
Speaker:I was nowhere because I was, I was expecting from 20 instead of 30 for some.
Speaker:Yeah, you got 24 more games.
Speaker:You can make a difference.
Speaker:You could, they could go out and win this conference.
Speaker:I mean, you know, and, and they have the talent to do it.
Speaker:The guys just have to, like I said, some of 'em, we gonna need some gut checks
Speaker:and we need some, some, uh, consistency and we only have to win the conference.
Speaker:We can go out and, and play really well and then win the
Speaker:conference in the tournament.
Speaker:I mean, the, the team has the ability, so it's, it's a long season.
Speaker:Anybody who's, you know, pouting and getting down and, and it's
Speaker:all over, it's like, all right, we don't need you Go away.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They'll co they'll come back in May when the weather's nice.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They'll come back in May when they're, when they're playing great.
Speaker:And the weather's nice, but, I mean, whatever.
Speaker:Get outta here.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But it, it's a long season.
Speaker:There's lots to go.
Speaker:Crazy stuff happens.
Speaker:Mainly Texas state, SWEP, Louisiana.
Speaker:You had weird games going all Southern
Speaker:State.
Speaker:Five.
Speaker:That's weird to start with.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I'm Southern.
Speaker:Miss is one game ahead of us in the standings.
Speaker:Who would've called that,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:They're three and three.
Speaker:Like, it's, it's weird.
Speaker:It's gonna be a weird year.
Speaker:It's a wood chipper.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You, you're gonna be tested every week.
Speaker:Uh, well, someone who had a test on Friday and kind of brought us back to
Speaker:get us the first game of this series.
Speaker:Wanna bring on Senior Patrick Johnson?
Speaker:Patrick, welcome to the show.
Speaker:How are y'all doing?
Speaker:Patty J What's up man?
Speaker:How are you?
Speaker:Good, good.
Speaker:How you been enjoying RDU This is your first year with us.
Speaker:How, how do you like it?
Speaker:It is, uh, I've really enjoyed it.
Speaker:You know, being around Coach Marin and Pond and Rhino, they've really,
Speaker:um, they've really helped me kind of figure out this new arm slot
Speaker:that I've been going through.
Speaker:Helping me work, uh, through some mental things that have kind of
Speaker:slowed me back earlier in college.
Speaker:And, you know, working through some of those, um, during the fall and
Speaker:throughout the year really helped.
Speaker:Well, I didn't realize your, your arm slots, so, so were you like
Speaker:a little higher, a little more three quarter or where were you
Speaker:before?
Speaker:I was, I dropped about a foot this summer.
Speaker:Oh, wow.
Speaker:Um, I got hurt last year and then went to tread and dropped about
Speaker:a foot, um, in my arm slot and
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Kind of two weeks before Polly ended up seeing me at the showcase at Tread.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, so they've helped kind of refine some things in my, um, pathway
Speaker:down the mound and working through some pitches throughout the fall.
Speaker:You never know watching 'cause you know, like, like I'm, I'm taking
Speaker:pictures and I know what a side armor is supposed to look like, and you
Speaker:look just like all the guys who do it.
Speaker:So that, that's pretty great that it's, it looks like it's working out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I've, I've really enjoyed it.
Speaker:I've gotten a lot more movement on pitches and it's a lot more fun.
Speaker:I mean.
Speaker:You just kind of, I'm not throwing as hard, but I mean
Speaker:yeah, just strikes, I guess, with the sinker and make 'em hit it.
Speaker:Uh, I meant to ask, uh, Shu and, and Cole, uh, Lambert about this too.
Speaker:Like how long did it take you to figure out your release point and your release
Speaker:timing when you changed that arm slot?
Speaker:Mine didn't take too long because I would always kind of mess around sidearm,
Speaker:like in the outfield and you know, like everyone, you just kind of throw
Speaker:a few sidearm and you're like, well, maybe one day, and I guess my day came.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah, well Friday you come on in relief of Ben Tanton, you get three and a third,
Speaker:no earned runs, four hits, no walks, two strikeouts, really kind of steadied
Speaker:the ship there when it looked like it was heading into a, a pretty bad spot.
Speaker:But take us through Friday and, and coming in and holding things up so we
Speaker:can end up Yeah, actually getting a win and obviously getting you a win too.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well, funny story actually.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:Pond thought they said Jackson and not Johnson.
Speaker:So a Conco was warming up originally.
Speaker:And so I went back because I need to go to the bathroom and pond was
Speaker:like, Hey, like you need to get hot.
Speaker:So I just got straight on the mound and started throwing.
Speaker:And you know, that has been a struggle of mine is the first inning.
Speaker:So,
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:Kind of trying to figure out how to change my sights earlier instead of
Speaker:it, you know, being a hit or hit a batter or, you know, give up a home
Speaker:run like I did at Troy last week.
Speaker:You know, just kind of figuring all that out in the bullpen pre-game.
Speaker:And that's something that I've talked to Marin about this week.
Speaker:Like almost thinking like instead of putting in the little plastic hitter,
Speaker:like getting an actual human to stand in or do something to get me a little
Speaker:bit more, um, ready to go early.
Speaker:And then from the first standing on it was just kind of.
Speaker:Win every inning and
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:I didn't know how long I was gonna throw, but just kind of try to give the
Speaker:offensive a shot to get back into it.
Speaker:And you, you created that opportunity for 'em and they did.
Speaker:They got back in it and come back and win and it ended up being really
Speaker:important to avoid getting swept.
Speaker:You obviously didn't know what was gonna happen Saturday, Sunday, but uh, you know,
Speaker:what was it like in dugout coming off the mound after that last inning you had?
Speaker:I mean, it seemed like the guys were kind of mobbing you a little
Speaker:bit as you were coming out.
Speaker:Yeah, it was fun.
Speaker:I mean, definitely the five, back to back five run innings is a good thing
Speaker:and, you know, I was really hoping to put up a zero to keep the momentum up.
Speaker:And it, it's always fun to walk in and the guys just going crazy and
Speaker:seeing the offense get back to work.
Speaker:I really like what Marin does where like, when you guys are done,
Speaker:he kind of lets you get settled, have your, have your relax for a
Speaker:second, and then it'll be like, Hey, you know, all right, Pat's done.
Speaker:Everybody give him, give him, give him, you know, the whole, all the
Speaker:pictures and everybody comes over.
Speaker:Uh, that seems like it's pretty cool experience that feel like it's good when
Speaker:it's happening, as it looks like it feels,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:It's fun and it's fun to pick up.
Speaker:The guys always like,
Speaker:yeah, yeah.
Speaker:After a good outing or, I mean, even if you struggle, it's like, it's always
Speaker:a good thing to like have the sense of the guys behind you and like, rally
Speaker:around you and then y'all be able to carry that in to whoever's next.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I was gonna say one thing.
Speaker:You really seem like you enjoy being a teammate.
Speaker:Like, I always see like, you're, you're always in the middle of
Speaker:like two or three guys and you're always engaged in some way.
Speaker:Like, uh, who, who have you really like jelled with since you've been here?
Speaker:Um, I live with Runyon, so me and Runyon are pretty close.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:And then, um, like me, Marcus, Darren.
Speaker:Um, I've gotten close with Ben.
Speaker:We have a bunch of guys over at our house every now and then and we'll
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:sit and play cards and watch whatever sporting events on.
Speaker:Um, so it's usually a lot of the, a lot of the pitchers come over and
Speaker:we just kinda hang out and then, I mean, all of us really get along
Speaker:and that was one thing that kind of,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:getting on campus was very welcoming, um, with everyone just helping
Speaker:out, helping me feel welcome.
Speaker:So
Speaker:That's
Speaker:awesome.
Speaker:And then, you know, obviously you're, you're down Saturday,
Speaker:Sunday 'cause you, you threw 50 or so pitches there on Friday.
Speaker:It was getting a little testy in the dugouts, like, I think that's like
Speaker:the loudest I think this season.
Speaker:I've heard at home, you obviously don't have to to get into anything that would
Speaker:get you in any kind of trouble, but could you just kind of feel like the momentum
Speaker:building with those guys when they just start jaw back and forth a little bit?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You definitely get a sense of just urgency whenever, like, especially like.
Speaker:Darren throws that slider to the backstop, like our entire dugout.
Speaker:Cheers.
Speaker:Like it's just, and it, it's a good thing when you're on the mound, like
Speaker:when you feel that out there and feel the energy from the guys, and I mean,
Speaker:I'm sure it's the same way hitting, just like being behind whoever's going and
Speaker:like wanting to go to war with them.
Speaker:Like definitely it's fun.
Speaker:Especially when their dugout starts to get into it too.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That was a really funny moment because I was thinking it was
Speaker:the first pitch of the inning.
Speaker:I mean, he just sailed that thing.
Speaker:I mean, Mac had no chance and it went.
Speaker:And I was like, all right, that's kind of weird.
Speaker:But then the whole dugout erupts and is clapping and laughing.
Speaker:That was, that was, I think, a cool way to pick your guy up there.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think he ended up going back and I don't know if he struck
Speaker:him out, but I don't He did.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think you went
Speaker:and got right.
Speaker:For
Speaker:sure.
Speaker:That was, that was a cool, that was a cool moment.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:What, um, what made you pick ODU, I mean, when you were, well, I
Speaker:guess, what made you leave Tennessee Tech and what made you pick ODU?
Speaker:So I ended up getting hurt last year about, mm-hmm.
Speaker:A week ago today.
Speaker:So I'm still in the process Oh wow.
Speaker:Right now of getting my med red from last year.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:And hopefully having another year, um,
Speaker:that'd be awesome.
Speaker:But kind of just our pitching coach ended up leaving Tennessee Tech, um, pretty
Speaker:early, I think it was in the winter.
Speaker:And so we just didn't have a pitching coach and I felt like I needed, I mean,
Speaker:I had a year left, I was thinking at the time, so I was like, I want to like
Speaker:go out and enjoy like my last year.
Speaker:And I mean, the portal's not fun for anyone.
Speaker:So, you know, going in the portal and, you know, talking to Coach Marin and a few
Speaker:of the, uh, the other guys, it was just like he, coach Marin really seems to care
Speaker:about every single person on our staff.
Speaker:And like, it's a lot deeper than baseball.
Speaker:It's like,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:he wants to know you on a personal level, like what makes you tick.
Speaker:And it's just, it's completely different than anything I've had.
Speaker:'cause I mean, this is my third school.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:just kinda having that kind of one-on-one connection with a pitching
Speaker:coach is special and you know, you can really tell that he cares about
Speaker:each and every person on the staff.
Speaker:Yeah, I was gonna say you had some ODU connections that you might
Speaker:not even known about at the time.
Speaker:I, because did you were at Middle Tennessee?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Where you had with, with Wiz Jerry Myers.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Wiz Zuki Wiz.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Which is one of my, one of my favorite human beings on the planet.
Speaker:I, I cannot tell, I mean, I've known Wiz since he was playing at ODU U and
Speaker:obviously Coach in all these years.
Speaker:Wiz is, I, I love the guy to death.
Speaker:I'm, I was happy for him to see he got the job there.
Speaker:Uh, but yeah.
Speaker:So that, tell us about, about working with, with Jerry and Wiz.
Speaker:Uh, it was funny because going into MTSU, there were a bunch of things
Speaker:that happened before the year.
Speaker:'cause our head coach ended up having to leave for some off the field things, so,
Speaker:right.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Coach Myers, uh, ended up taking over and being the head coach and then, um,
Speaker:it was, it was fun playing under Coach Myers and then Wiz came in sophomore,
Speaker:my sophomore year, and a lot of the things that he brought into the program
Speaker:there are kind of what we used here, so,
Speaker:right.
Speaker:The transition from the low, medium, hybrid high days.
Speaker:He brought all those in and I remember there were a bunch of guys who went
Speaker:and moved him whiz into the house.
Speaker:So I remember moving Whiz into the house and his wife made
Speaker:his cookies and everything.
Speaker:That's great.
Speaker:But's Wiz ended up, Wiz did call me this summer and kind of was, talked
Speaker:to him a little bit about ODU, um, 'cause I remembered he went here.
Speaker:So
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Get your background, background check on ODU there from the Good Source.
Speaker:And I remember ODU because especially joining conference USA.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:I remember hearing about from the older guys, like the
Speaker:odu, the Southern miss, like
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:Whenever they were in conference, USA.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah, we were hitting tanks those last couple years and
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:That's all I, that's all I heard.
Speaker:I heard,
Speaker:I remember we, they were hitting some in the football field
Speaker:there at, uh, middle Tennessee.
Speaker:I, I actually.
Speaker:Heard a story about that.
Speaker:It like hit the camera up on top and
Speaker:Yeah, I think it, I think Andy Gara probably did that.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:That was funny.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:There were some bombs hit that day that, that park, if I remember correctly,
Speaker:it like, it was like a magnet to the football stadium for Oh, it
Speaker:flies.
Speaker:It flies,
Speaker:flies outta there.
Speaker:Uh, well, tell us a little bit about what you throw.
Speaker:I don't think I've ever asked this question on the podcast.
Speaker:This is probably because I'm an amateur and this is, you
Speaker:know, I'm not great at this.
Speaker:But, but tell us about like your, your pitches that you throw and kind of what
Speaker:you feel like you've developed, you know, the most since coming over to ODU.
Speaker:Um, so I'm pretty dominant on sinker.
Speaker:Um, I don't throw it too much, but I think my main pitch is kind of my
Speaker:slider and that's kind of been my bread and butter throughout college.
Speaker:Um, just being able to throw that.
Speaker:I feel like that's one of the pitches I'm more confident than even my
Speaker:fastball, like behind an account.
Speaker:I love going to the slider.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:And I think the pitch that kind of has been the unicorn is the changeup.
Speaker:I haven't really thrown it much, but this summer I figured out a kick change.
Speaker:I've never really had a good changeup.
Speaker:I used to call my changeup the home run pitch, because like every
Speaker:time I threw it, it went out.
Speaker:Um, that's crazy.
Speaker:But, um, kind of found the kick change and it's, it's, it's weird.
Speaker:Sometimes it'll cut, sometimes it'll go straight down.
Speaker:Sometimes it'll run.
Speaker:Coach Marion just calls it the death ball.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Um, I think that's that.
Speaker:And then really dominating, like, I think the main issue for me right now
Speaker:is just moving my sites over and trying to work in on hitters more with the
Speaker:sinker and have that be more effective.
Speaker:So everyone has like a weird pitch now, right?
Speaker:Because I know Kellen has whatever that gyro slider
Speaker:weird thing is.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:And then you have the death ball, so we just gotta keep creating and
Speaker:naming new pitches, it sounds like.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And Marcus and Darren also had, they have the same similar kick change.
Speaker:I remember Marcus, uh, me and him would talk all the, that was my
Speaker:throwing partner before he got hurt.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:So we'd, we'd throw all the time and just mess with the changeups
Speaker:and it was always fun just messing with him as he was getting mad.
Speaker:He'd be like.
Speaker:Yours dropped more than mine today.
Speaker:And then he'd throw it and it was just,
Speaker:you never think about this.
Speaker:That's gotta be real.
Speaker:I mean, number one, it's just sad.
Speaker:'cause you know, Marcus is such a great guy, and Oh yeah, it sucks, but it's
Speaker:like you never think about like your throwing partner is kind of a big deal.
Speaker:That's like usually that's like your guy, that's your routine.
Speaker:And so when that all of a sudden shifted up, and so did you have to like convince
Speaker:somebody else to be your throwing partner?
Speaker:Did you like steal from somebody else or what did you, how did that,
Speaker:who's your new throwing partner?
Speaker:How'd you work that out?
Speaker:Well, it's been interesting because I've thrown, I threw with Darren all winter,
Speaker:and then Darren ended up starting.
Speaker:So then I started throwing with Marcus, and then Marcus went out early.
Speaker:And then now I've been thrown with Runion a lot.
Speaker:And then, okay.
Speaker:It just really depends on the day.
Speaker:Now, like I threw with Lambford some last week because our, our
Speaker:throwing lines, it, it is just kind of like I threw a chuck today.
Speaker:It's just kind of okay,
Speaker:you're just playing, you're just a young guy playing the field.
Speaker:You'll throw with anybody.
Speaker:I got it.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Alright.
Speaker:You're not gonna get, you're not gonna get stuck with one throwing partner.
Speaker:I see how it is.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:That makes sense.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Let's keep your options open.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:I hear you.
Speaker:That's gotta be weird with you and Cole throwing because that's like, no,
Speaker:nothing is, no ball is above the head.
Speaker:It feels like it's all out here.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:It's a fun catch play.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So you're from, uh, Chattanooga, Tennessee, right?
Speaker:Is that correct?
Speaker:I
Speaker:am.
Speaker:I'm, yeah.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Did you ever get to play at the lookouts field?
Speaker:We did.
Speaker:I'm excited for the new one, uh, the new field.
Speaker:Oh, nice.
Speaker:They make a new one.
Speaker:Good.
Speaker:That's cool.
Speaker:They did, they, it was about time.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:I mean, that field.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Because I was thinking, I went there and it was like Brian McCann
Speaker:and Jeff Rancor and Charlie Mor were in like double A at the time.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:You're talking like, like over 20 years ago.
Speaker:That's a long time.
Speaker:The last time, I mean, I remember like Yawe, uh, yeah.
Speaker:Byron Buxton.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:I know Kershaw because they, I mean, they bounced around.
Speaker:They were the Reds.
Speaker:Yeah, they were the twins.
Speaker:They were the Dodgers.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:So, uh, I remember Kershaw came in for like a rehab assignment, and that's the,
Speaker:that's awesome.
Speaker:That stadium was packed, but they moved it and it was about time,
Speaker:but it was always fun playing.
Speaker:Like we'd play a few high school games there every now and then against,
Speaker:um, McCauley, who was our rival.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:So that was, uh, that was always fun.
Speaker:Now, were you a hitter too in high school?
Speaker:Yeah, but I was terrible.
Speaker:I
Speaker:you could tell the bro no one was gonna look it up.
Speaker:You could just tell the story.
Speaker:No, I, I tell them all the, that's what I tell the hitters all the time.
Speaker:Like, I was like, I'm just gonna stay outta y'all's business.
Speaker:Like I can't hit.
Speaker:That's
Speaker:funny.
Speaker:Like I was, I was a lefty bunt.
Speaker:I had to hit it the other way and I'd play outfield.
Speaker:I was, I was decent at outfield, but I could not hit save my life.
Speaker:So did you, did you were, did you hit and play anyway?
Speaker:Like were even though you were bad at it?
Speaker:Or did you just like get
Speaker:I did,
Speaker:I did.
Speaker:I mean, our lineup was kind of stacked in high school.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:we, uh, every now and then I'd go in and defensive replacement and
Speaker:Sure.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's funny.
Speaker:I think he's just sandbagging.
Speaker:That's what he is.
Speaker:He's gonna get in his, usually how
Speaker:great they were.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You're gonna get the one AB and just like crank one into the gap
Speaker:and be like, Hey, just kidding guys.
Speaker:That was awesome.
Speaker:My last ever game, I went four for four.
Speaker:I think if you've lined them all up, up, they might make it to the fence.
Speaker:But I went four for four.
Speaker:That's fair.
Speaker:That's
Speaker:all blind drives of the box score, right?
Speaker:That's what I
Speaker:always say.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Exactly.
Speaker:All of 'em are singles.
Speaker:About, say when you were at Tennessee Tech, you didn't happen to run into Bobby
Speaker:Wilder or the football coach, did you?
Speaker:He would be around every now and then, because the training room was,
Speaker:um, our training room was connected to the football field, so I'd see
Speaker:him around every now and then.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's our, another ODU, uh, legendary football coach.
Speaker:Phenomenal guy.
Speaker:I, we used to work at a golf ball shop and he came in one time like nobody
Speaker:else was there, and he sat and hung out and talked to him for like 45 minutes
Speaker:after he stopped coaching for us.
Speaker:Oh.
Speaker:But yeah, just a, just a great guy.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So I'm glad he is having success out there.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:ODU u everywhere.
Speaker:I guess I just keep running
Speaker:into it.
Speaker:Yeah, we do it, man.
Speaker:You never know.
Speaker:It's weird where you start seeing the logos and all over the place.
Speaker:You got, you got OD fans everywhere.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:Patrick, well, I know you've got a big week ahead and you got, uh, two Midweeks
Speaker:and then you're heading down to mobile.
Speaker:That's probably like the closest travel schedule we've had to last year.
Speaker:You got four row games this week.
Speaker:Uh, so we'll, we'll let you go, let you rest up all that fun stuff.
Speaker:Unless CB you got anything else?
Speaker:No, man, we, we appreciate you.
Speaker:I hope hopefully you get that, uh, medical richer and we can
Speaker:have you back here next year, man.
Speaker:That'd be, that'd be a nice surprise.
Speaker:Yes, sir.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:Patrick, thanks so much for, uh, hopping on here and
Speaker:chatting with us is a good time.
Speaker:And, uh, we will see you at some point this week.
Speaker:Not sure which game, but we'll see you at some point.
Speaker:Yes, sir. Hopefully it, hopefully the radar's lying and it warms
Speaker:up a little bit for tomorrow, but
Speaker:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:No more 40 degree games, man.
Speaker:That's ridiculous.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:crazy.
Speaker:I mean, it's 80 degrees and then all of a sudden it's 20 and then it's gonna snow
Speaker:the next day, and then it's gonna be 80.
Speaker:No, no.
Speaker:That's why I, that's why I've been sick for a month.
Speaker:I was talking before we started about and sick.
Speaker:I've been coughing for a month.
Speaker:It's 'cause of that.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:Well, thanks so much Patrick.
Speaker:Uh, good luck this week and we'll be cheering you on.
Speaker:Yes, sir. Thank you.
Speaker:Good talking to y'all.
Speaker:All right, thanks.
Speaker:Thanks, man.
Speaker:Appreciate it man.
Speaker:Alrighty.
Speaker:CB man, I'll be honest, I've not talked to, to Patrick a lot.
Speaker:He is a, he is a really great kid.
Speaker:That was awesome.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He hit me cracking up there.
Speaker:That was was, I still think he's sandbagging.
Speaker:I,
Speaker:yeah, I think he's lying.
Speaker:It's like, bro, our lineup was stacked, but they let you play.
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So yeah, four for four in the last game.
Speaker:That was an anomaly.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But we'll see.
Speaker:I mean, Finny sounds like he's open to getting Jackson a con
Speaker:and ab if he can hit, I mean.
Speaker:John could hit.
Speaker:Yeah, he was hitting like clean up third for, uh, for Grand
Speaker:Christian who is, you know, no joke.
Speaker:I mean, they won the state championship as his, his junior year.
Speaker:He was DH in for or playing third or first base.
Speaker:I mean, yeah, Jackson can hit,
Speaker:I mean, it, it's hard to tell heights from the outfield seats, but I can tell you
Speaker:having stood next to him, he's a big boy.
Speaker:He's a big strong boy.
Speaker:Like if he got a hold of the baseball, it's gonna go a long, long, damn way.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He hit some line drives, that's for sure.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But maybe that's what you need, that maybe that's how you, you kind of
Speaker:break this funk on the pitching staff is you let one of those guys go in and
Speaker:get an ab, get the, get the bullpen, get the dugout all jacked up, and
Speaker:then see like sometimes little funky things like that can get you going.
Speaker:You never
Speaker:know.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Well, CB, we got players of the week.
Speaker:Mm. If you've got your stats on hand, if not, I'll just share, I'm
Speaker:gonna share this picture first.
Speaker:I thought it was good.
Speaker:Oh, yeah, that's a great one.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:After Za Dallas almost killed Aaron Zelensky and I in the stands.
Speaker:Uh, this is the way he, he celebrated.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:No, the, the, the, the, uh, fire, uh, hat is great.
Speaker:I, I was telling you, I don't know why.
Speaker:The, the fire hat ends up being so clear in the pictures and then sometimes the
Speaker:rest of the picture doesn't seem as clear and it doesn't make sense because like
Speaker:my camera is probably pointed right on.
Speaker:If not Tyler's face his chin, his, his, his like chest.
Speaker:But then the helmet is like crisp and the rest of the grid.
Speaker:So it's, but yeah.
Speaker:But anyway, that's minor nerd photography stuff.
Speaker:Yeah, it's a fun picture.
Speaker:That's, it's great to see these guys having a good time.
Speaker:It was a great shot.
Speaker:And by the way, like, uh, most of the time I tag CB and the photos
Speaker:I put on social media occasionally I'm an idiot and I forget.
Speaker:But basically if you look on our social media accounts and the picture looks good
Speaker:at cbs, if it looks like some jackass zoomed in with a, an iPhone, that's me.
Speaker:So in case there was any doubt, there you go.
Speaker:That's fair.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:We got
Speaker:players of the week.
Speaker:Hope I'm late.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Players of the week.
Speaker:Speaking of players of the week, we were just talking to
Speaker:one of 'em, Patrick Johnson.
Speaker:Uh, and, and, and Patrick's been, he's been doing great.
Speaker:I, I think you said these stats three and a third, uh, one run, no earned runs.
Speaker:Uh, four hits, no walks, which is huge.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:We've been talking about not walking guys and two strikeouts.
Speaker:Um, he's not a huge strikeout guy, but he is just been putting
Speaker:the ball in, in the right spots.
Speaker:And he had a few where, you know, like when we first came in, you talk
Speaker:about having struggles, but he had a few where he gave up a ground ball.
Speaker:I think his very first battery, he gave up a ground ball and
Speaker:it just didn't get fielded.
Speaker:And then,
Speaker:yep,
Speaker:a couple of run, a couple of inherited runs scored, um, su pio, like we, I
Speaker:think we both agreed if it wasn't on a Wednesday against Norfolk State,
Speaker:he'd have been pitcher of the week.
Speaker:Um, four scoreless innings, no runs, two hits, one walk, four strikeouts.
Speaker:Looked phenomenal.
Speaker:I I missed the first half of the inning just 'cause I was a little late, uh,
Speaker:trying to get there, you know, when they moved up to two instead of three.
Speaker:Um, but he, he looked as good as I've ever seen him.
Speaker:Uh, it was great.
Speaker:Um, Jace Park, another good week, another good adding three innings.
Speaker:Uh, did give up a run.
Speaker:Two hits, few to me walks, three walks and two strikeouts.
Speaker:And JJ Gaddy, um, he, four innings gave up two earned runs
Speaker:and the first inning he pitched.
Speaker:But then after that, nothing.
Speaker:So then four hits, no walks again, huge having no walks in three strikeouts.
Speaker:Um, so, you know, again, not a huge list of pitchers, not a huge list
Speaker:of pitchers or hitters that were like really, really phenomenal.
Speaker:We just have a fair amount of guys who were, who are solid.
Speaker:Uh, Zach late, he, another hitter of the week.
Speaker:I think this is three of the six weeks.
Speaker:He was, I think week one, three, and six now, and probably
Speaker:could've won those other weeks.
Speaker:And just somebody else happened to have a little bit better.
Speaker:Um, so he was seven fif seven for 15.
Speaker:Had a double eight rbis on the week.
Speaker:Um, he's, he's actually got, I think he's got 36 rbis for the
Speaker:season, which is more than he had last season when he led the team.
Speaker:So he is already got
Speaker:crazy
Speaker:more than anybody had last year, which is crazy.
Speaker:And only 22 games.
Speaker:And he was a foot from having a home run instead of a double on Sunday.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, he hit the top quarter panel of, of the outfield wall.
Speaker:Man, that ball was a missile.
Speaker:He hits the ball so hard, like even, you know, they're, they're shifting
Speaker:on him and he still hit a ball up the middle that goes right past the guys.
Speaker:'cause he hits just so hard.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:On the ground.
Speaker:Um, but he also had what, two walks, two sacrifice flies.
Speaker:Uh, Grayson Spar had a nice week.
Speaker:He was five for 15, had a double five rbis, three runs.
Speaker:He's really settling into playing right field and playing a really good
Speaker:defense too, which I, I think is fun.
Speaker:Um, and then Will Johnson, uh, the Johnson Boys both on
Speaker:here, will was, uh, six for 16.
Speaker:Had a double two RBI seven run score, which is huge at the top of the lineup.
Speaker:Had a walk hit by pitching a steel and played, played some
Speaker:really good defense this week too.
Speaker:Um, so again, nothing, not, maybe not as, I think some of our
Speaker:guys didn't necessarily light it up and hit like 500 this week.
Speaker:A lot of the other guys just, you know, oh, they, maybe they only
Speaker:hit like 300 for the week, so
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:pretty good.
Speaker:We had quite a few guys come in and get some pinch hit opportunities on Saturday.
Speaker:Yeah, I would say F Morales is one.
Speaker:It was good to see him get back in there, but mean first the bat stings
Speaker:a double next to bat gets a single.
Speaker:Um, I think he was on the wrong end of a couple of those strike calls on Sunday.
Speaker:Uh, that did not help him.
Speaker:Like.
Speaker:F knows the strike zone.
Speaker:Zach late knows the strike zone, and if they're both shaking their heads,
Speaker:going back to dugout something, something's a little funky there.
Speaker:Uh, but Friday, like, you know, gotta give the bullpen a lot of credit
Speaker:to go and win that game on Friday.
Speaker:You know, Ben, I think he's, he is freshman gonna make mistakes, but I think
Speaker:he's, he's gonna be okay in the long run.
Speaker:But Patrick Johnson coming in and giving you three and a third of good,
Speaker:good pitching Jace Park coming in behind that, only allowing one run.
Speaker:Then of course, Bailey, Matt just blowing everyone's doors
Speaker:off there to close it out.
Speaker:I mean, that's, that's a pretty good punch from the bullpen.
Speaker:Uh, if you wanna look for any kind of bright spot in the, in the pitching
Speaker:performance over the weekend.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And that's been the problem is though the bull been having to come in and throw
Speaker:like eight innings in, in the games.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, uh, I think, I'm pretty sure that that was Kellen's longest
Speaker:outing of his career when he went
Speaker:four, I have to believe it.
Speaker:He threw 70 pitches, four innings.
Speaker:I, and he was throwing, I mean, he was four plus innings too, so it was, yeah.
Speaker:He threw four innings over the course of five innings.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Um, 70, of course the six innings, wasn't he?
Speaker:I mean, whatever it ended up being.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:it was.
Speaker:He threw, he threw a lot.
Speaker:Yeah, he, he did.
Speaker:I, I almost got the point where I was like, are they stretching
Speaker:him out to potentially starting?
Speaker:And I was like, eh, I don't know, but hey, why, why not?
Speaker:I mean, he's, he's gonna give you 110% every time he touches that mound.
Speaker:That dude is, he's,
Speaker:at this point, maybe you need to just like pick whoever you think
Speaker:is not really gonna be effective.
Speaker:Let 'em face the first batter of the game and then bring
Speaker:somebody in from the bullpen.
Speaker:Because right now the starters aren't doing it, but the bullpen's doing it.
Speaker:So just have, have your designated one, one out batter, just
Speaker:it's a lefty lead off hitter.
Speaker:Bring a lefty, and I don't know what you
Speaker:gotta
Speaker:do.
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:I know that they're, they're trying everything.
Speaker:I mean, we saw a, yeah.
Speaker:A whole different mix this weekend.
Speaker:They're trying to get guys, I thought they did a good job of giving Gadi
Speaker:a chance to come in the game mm-hmm.
Speaker:And work like, Hey, just go in and get outs.
Speaker:And that's the best.
Speaker:He's looked really all season.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:And I, I'm excited for like, XLP PIO to be looking good.
Speaker:'cause he has great stuff.
Speaker:He's a great team guy.
Speaker:GA's the loudest guy in the dugout, no matter what I mean.
Speaker:He, he will go.
Speaker:I was
Speaker:telling him yesterday, I was like, you, you can do PA
Speaker:without even raising your voice.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You can hear him in the, in the outfield stands, but it, it, his demeanor from
Speaker:a team perspective doesn't change.
Speaker:He goes out and gets shelled.
Speaker:He's in the dugout, he's cheering on the guy that just came in to replace him.
Speaker:So like, I wanna see these guys that we know have talent.
Speaker:We know our team guys just start pulling in the same direction
Speaker:for one of these weekend series.
Speaker:'cause when it comes together, we know it can be good.
Speaker:They just, they gotta get there and kind of gotta do it here the next
Speaker:couple weeks or it could get early soon.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, like I said, it's, we, we got eight weekends left, 24 games.
Speaker:You did that math for me.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:I had to remember it again.
Speaker:Um, but, you know, it's, it's a lot of games, but it's also becomes
Speaker:not a lot if you don't start making moves and start making it happen.
Speaker:And it's tough to go out win on the road, uh, but you really need to,
Speaker:you know, you need to, it, frankly, you need to be nice to sweep on
Speaker:the road, which is incredibly hard.
Speaker:Um, but the, it's just the path's not gonna get easier.
Speaker:You know, you really wanna make sure you are set up to do well in the tournament.
Speaker:Um, and, and, you know, and frankly, you wanna start pitching well because it's
Speaker:super hard to win a tournament when you don't have any kind of pitching length.
Speaker:I think we got, there is depth on the staff.
Speaker:There's a lot of guys.
Speaker:But then can these guys, any of them go 3, 4, 5, 6 innings?
Speaker:You know, it's, it's hard to get through playing four or five games in four
Speaker:or five days when every guy is only throwing like an inning, two innings.
Speaker:I mean, we've seen that.
Speaker:We've seen that several years.
Speaker:We've seen that where just what happens is you just run outta gas.
Speaker:And even if you get to that one game where it's like, oh, we win this
Speaker:game, we'll make it to the final.
Speaker:Well, hard to win that last game.
Speaker:That when you're playing that second game of the day.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, throwing fumes.
Speaker:Yeah, it, it takes some wear and tear and y you're right, like I think we have
Speaker:a lot of guys that can go get you an ending, maybe two, but we need a couple
Speaker:guys that can give us five, maybe six.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And who, who knows, maybe with this shakeup that occurred this weekend,
Speaker:those guys are locked back in and we get five from Ske, five from Gadi,
Speaker:and then we just kinda see what happens there on Sunday with Sulp Pio.
Speaker:I mean, he has the ability to, to put up some endings for you and get a bunch
Speaker:of outs, but you know, if, if 500 is your baseline or you lost a home series,
Speaker:now you've gotta go win an away series.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:If you think of like 15 and 15 as the bar of like, yes, we're in the tournament.
Speaker:If we get to 17 wins, we're definitely a top six seed.
Speaker:Uh, but I'll tell you right now, like ULM is in third place.
Speaker:They're four and two.
Speaker:Who would've called that?
Speaker:Who would've called Marshall at five and one and second one day behind Coastal.
Speaker:And, and maybe that's just, they have the right match up and the
Speaker:right weekend, and by the end of the year they'll be at the bottom.
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:You don't know.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And you, you,
Speaker:that may be five and their were 10 wins all season in the conference.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, if we flip the script here and started beating teams, I
Speaker:guarantee that Troy and are gonna be really happy that they caught us
Speaker:early and we, maybe we catch a team that tails off later in the year.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, you know, and at some point the injuries gotta catch up to Coastal.
Speaker:But I, I don't know, man.
Speaker:I mean, yeah, six and oh, they're 16 and seven overall, and they're
Speaker:down there, top three arms.
Speaker:That's, I can't figure that one out.
Speaker:Super fun.
Speaker:Cool folks too.
Speaker:They're just really nice to be around.
Speaker:Yeah, I will not be making that road trip.
Speaker:I am excited that the next home series is Southern Miss because
Speaker:I do like Southern Miss fans.
Speaker:They're probably my favorite fan base.
Speaker:The Sun, I mean, die Hard baseball.
Speaker:Like they, it's rare.
Speaker:They don't sell games out.
Speaker:They pretty sure their
Speaker:staff was so nice too.
Speaker:Never.
Speaker:I mean, the fans were, but like, also just the staff was just wonderful people.
Speaker:And the coaches, I talked a little bit, you know, they're
Speaker:on the workout day and Yeah.
Speaker:I'm with you.
Speaker:Southern Miss is is cool now I want them to come and, and
Speaker:take three straight losses.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:But I, I do wanna meet, I do wanna see their nice folks.
Speaker:Yeah, for sure.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I, I wanna sweep 'em, but I would love to just grab some beers with their
Speaker:fan base, uh, throughout that weekend.
Speaker:So they're, they're, they're a good group.
Speaker:They are smart baseball people too.
Speaker:Yeah, folks.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Well, we got William and Mary Tuesday.
Speaker:We got at Richmond Wednesday.
Speaker:We need one of those manufactured rain outs.
Speaker:I feel like the Bull Durham flood, the field something I guess, I don't know.
Speaker:This is a rough.
Speaker:I go both ways on that.
Speaker:'cause sometimes I, you know, in, so I, I think I, you've said that and I agree with
Speaker:you, but then other part of me is like, well, yeah, but aren't these opportunities
Speaker:to go out and like, prove yourself and, you know, do the thing you wanna do.
Speaker:Like, I think some of our guys really need that opportunity to get on the mound.
Speaker:I, I don't think you don't get better.
Speaker:I think pitching by not pitching, that's one thing I've always, that's why I
Speaker:always like guys throwing a summer ball.
Speaker:Even if you only go out and throw 15 innings, it's like you
Speaker:just, you get better by pitching.
Speaker:We're gonna need the bats though.
Speaker:Um, I mean, I think Richmond's probably in a similar boat with us, uh, on Wednesday
Speaker:in terms of their midweek pitching.
Speaker:Uh, William and Mary, I mean, they, they beat the brakes out off of us last year
Speaker:and it was a very similar situation.
Speaker:We were a little shaky on pitching and we rolled in into Williamsburg
Speaker:and they, and they wrecked us.
Speaker:That was probably my least favorite game of all last
Speaker:season for a number of reasons.
Speaker:But that was one of them.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:Yeah, well hopefully we get some wins in the books this week.
Speaker:I'd love to go down South Alabama and take two outta three.
Speaker:I think we'd all feel a lot better and we'd look a lot better in the
Speaker:standings, but we gotta go and do it.
Speaker:They gotta go put it together and I mean, all the pieces are there.
Speaker:They just gotta connect the dots.
Speaker:Yeah, well, we'll see.
Speaker:They got, they got the talent.
Speaker:They just gotta believe.
Speaker:They gotta, they like Finny made a great point.
Speaker:You gotta visualize it.
Speaker:You gotta see yourself winning.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:We're either gonna get even or get even worse, so we'll figure out how it goes,
Speaker:dude.
Speaker:No.
Speaker:No.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Well that will do it for us today.
Speaker:We appreciate you all tuning in, following us along on social media.
Speaker:Uh, that should all be back to normal next week, so we will see how that goes.
Speaker:But thank you all for tuning in.
Speaker:Go Monarchs.
Speaker:Go Monarchs.
