Between the sixth and seventh trumpet, Revelation pauses again — and this time the pause is deeply personal. A mighty angel descends with a little scroll, and John himself is drawn directly into the story in a way that costs him something.
A Mighty Angel and an Unsealed Scroll
Wrapped in a cloud with a rainbow overhead and a face like the sun, this angel carries a small, already-unsealed scroll — very different from the sealed scroll of chapter 5. Whether this figure is a Christophany or simply a glorious angel, the text leaves that question genuinely open.
The Seven Thunders John Was Told Not to Write
Seven thunders speak, and John is about to record what they said — until a voice from heaven stops him. Some things about God’s plan remain sealed even from the one writing the book, echoing chapter 6’s martyrs who still don’t have the full picture from heaven itself.
“The Waiting Is Over”
The angel swears there will be no more delay — not an announcement of time itself ending, but that the mercy-filled waiting period, during which people can still turn to God, has come to a close.
Eating the Scroll: Sweet and Bitter Together
Echoing Ezekiel 3, John is told to eat the scroll — sweet as honey in the mouth, bitter in the stomach. The Word of God is genuinely good news, but carrying and speaking it can still be costly. The two aren’t in tension; they’re the same message held together.
John’s Not Finished
The chapter closes with John being told he must prophesy again, to “many peoples, nations, languages, and kings” — the same fourfold phrase from chapter 7’s great multitude. The message is for everyone, not a narrow audience.
This episode sits with the idea that something can be genuinely sweet and genuinely hard to carry at the same time — and asks where that’s shown up in your own walk with God.
