This episode is the first in a three-part special series devoted to French in Thailand. It traces more than 340 years of French presence and influence in Thailand, from the first exchanges under Somdet Phra Narai to its cultural, academic, and diplomatic role today.

With Khunying Wongchan Pinainitisart, we discover how French has taken root in the language, royalty, education, and international cooperation, and why it still occupies a unique place in Thai society.

Cet épisode est le premier d’une série spéciale en trois volets consacrée au français en Thaïlande. Il retrace plus de 340 ans de présence et d’influence du français en Thaïlande, depuis les premiers échanges sous Somdet Phra Narai jusqu’à son rôle culturel, académique et diplomatique aujourd’hui.

Avec Khunying Wongchan Pinainitisart, nous découvrons comment le français s’est enraciné dans la langue, la royauté, l’enseignement et les coopérations internationales, et pourquoi il occupe encore une place unique dans la société thaïlandaise.

We know that French is not a language used in everyday life in Thailand. Yet it has held a special place for a long time.

As early as the time of Somdet Phra Narai, more than 340 years ago, France and the Kingdom of Siam had established official diplomatic relations.

Later on, the use of French declined, but many words of French origin remained in the Thai language up to today, such as le pain, which became ขนมปัง, or the word ฝรั่ง used to refer to Westerners.

During the Rattanakosin period, Franco Thai relations flourished again, especially from the reign of Rama IV onward.

Later, under His Majesty King Rama IX, the French language held an important place. His Majesty, having lived in Switzerland from a very young age, mastered French perfectly.

The entire Mahidol family, the Queen Mother, Rama VIII, Rama IX, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, as well as Princess Galyani Vadhana, spoke French fluently. King Rama IX also regularly watched TV5 programs.

Many other members of the royal family also mastered the French language.

We also thank the French government for enabling a large number of young Thai students to pursue their studies in France.

A particularly significant figure for the field of French in Thailand is Her Majesty Princess Galyani Vadhana, who was a French teacher at Thammasat University and in several other institutions.

She founded the Association Thaïlandaise des Professeurs de Français (ATPF), now 48 years old, with the aim of raising teaching standards and creating a support center for French teachers.

Later, Her Majesty Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, a great connoisseur of the French language, agreed to place the association under her High Patronage, also becoming its honorary president. We are deeply grateful for this.

Today, the Association des Professeurs de Français works actively and plays an increasingly important role. It carries out several essential missions, such as:

- organizing training and professional development for teachers in line with contemporary pedagogical approaches

- promoting academic exchanges and seeking cooperation with francophone countries such as Switzerland or the Kingdom of Belgium

serving as a bridge between the association and the French Embassy, as well as other embassies of francophone countries and international organizations such as the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)

- supporting educational activities including events, contests, meetings and competitions in listening, speaking, reading and writing, offering students a space to experience the French language and culture. These events are honored each year by the presence of Her Majesty Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn

- strengthening the professional community of French teachers, and offering training and development opportunities in France and other francophone countries

All of this helps maintain the vitality, quality and continuous development of the teaching of French in Thailand.

the 50th anniversary of its creation, coinciding with the centenary of the birth of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who devoted more than 70 years to serving the Thai people, a highly symbolic year for the entire francophone community.

On sait bien que le français n’est pas une langue utilisée dans la vie quotidienne en Thaïlande. Pourtant, il occupe une place particulière depuis longtemps.

Dès l’époque de Somdet Phra Narai, il y a plus de 340 ans, la France et le Royaume de Siam avaient établi des relations diplomatiques officielles.

Par la suite, l’usage du français a diminué, mais de nombreux mots d’origine française sont restés dans la langue thaïe jusqu’à aujourd’hui, comme *le pain* devenu “ขนมปัง”, ou encore le mot “ฝรั่ง” utilisé pour désigner les Occidentaux.

Sous la période Rattanakosin, les relations franco-thaïlandaises ont de nouveau prospéré, notamment à partir du règne de Rama IV.

Plus tard, sous Sa Majesté le Roi Rama IX, la langue française occupait une place importante : Sa Majesté, ayant vécu en Suisse dès son plus jeune âge, maîtrisait parfaitement le français.

Toute la famille Mahidol — la Reine-Mère, Rama VIII, Rama IX, Sa Majesté la Reine Sirikit, ainsi que la Princesse Galyani Vadhana — parlait couramment le français. Le Roi Rama IX suivait d’ailleurs régulièrement les programmes de TV5.

De nombreux autres membres de la famille royale ont également maîtrisé la langue française.

Nous remercions également le gouvernement français pour avoir permis à un grand nombre de jeunes Thaïlandais d’aller poursuivre leurs études en France.

Une figure particulièrement marquante pour le domaine du français en Thaïlande est Sa Majesté la Princesse Galyani Vadhana, qui fut enseignante de français à l’Université Thammasat et dans plusieurs institutions.

Elle a fondé l’Association Thaïlandaise des Professeurs de Français (ATPF), aujourd’hui âgée de 48 ans, dans le but d’élever les standards d’enseignement et de créer un centre de soutien pour les enseignants de français.

Plus tard, Sa Majesté la Princesse Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, grande connaisseuse de la langue française, a accepté de placer l’association sous Son Haut Patronage, devenant également présidente d’honneur. Nous en sommes profondément reconnaissants.

Aujourd’hui, l’Association des Professeurs de Français travaille activement et joue un rôle de plus en plus important. Elle mène plusieurs missions essentielles, comme :

- organiser des formations et le développement professionnel des enseignants, en accord avec les approches pédagogiques contemporaines ;

- promouvoir les échanges académiques et solliciter la coopération de pays francophones comme la Suisse ou le Royaume de Belgique ;

- servir de passerelle entre l’association et l’Ambassade de France, ainsi que les autres ambassades de pays francophones et des organisations internationales telles que l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) ;

- soutenir les activités éducatives : événements, concours, rencontres et compétitions en compréhension orale, production orale, lecture et écriture, offrant ainsi aux élèves et étudiants un espace pour vivre la langue et la culture françaises. Ces événements sont honorés chaque année par la présence de Sa Majesté la Princesse Maha Chakri Sirindhorn ;

- renforcer la communauté professionnelle des enseignants de français, et offrir des opportunités de formation et de perfectionnement en France et dans d’autres pays francophones.

Tout cela contribue à maintenir la vitalité, la qualité et le développement continu de l’enseignement du français en Thaïlande.

พูดถึงภาษาฝรั่งเศสกก็ทราบกันดีว่าจะไม่ใช่ภาษาที่ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันในประเทศไทย แต่ก็ถือได้ว่าเป็นภาษาที่มีสถานะพิเศษมายาวนาน นับจากยุคสมัยของสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชแห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยา 340 ปีมาแล้ว มีการเจริญสัมพันธไมตรีอย่างเป็นทางการระหว่างประเทศฝรั่งเศสและสยาม หลังจากนั้นมีการใช้ภาษาฝรั่งเศสน้อยลง แต่มีคำศัพท์มากมายที่ใช้อย่างต่อเนื่องมาถึงปัจจุบัน เช่น ขนมปัง คือ Le pain และเราจะเรียกคนผิวขาวต่างชาติว่า "ฝรั่ง"

ในยุคสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ ความสัมพันธ์ไทยฝรั่งเศส ก็เฟื่องฟูขึ้น ตั้งแต่สมัย รัชกาลที่ 4 ต่อมาในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 9 พระองค์ประทับในประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ตั้งแต่ทรงพระเยาว์ ราชสกุล มหิดล คือ สมเด็จย่า รัชกาลที่ 8 รัชกาลที่ 9 สมเด็จพระราชิ้นสิริกิต์ และสมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอเจ้าฟ้า กัลยาณิวัฒนาฯ ทุกพระองค์ทรงมีพระปรีชาสามารถในการสื่อสารภาษาฝรั่งเศส รัชกาที่9เอง ก็ทรงทอดพระเนตรรายการของ TV5 เป็นประจำ รวมทั้งพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์จำนวนมากก็ใช้ภาษาฝรั่งเศส

ขอบคุณรัฐบาลฝรั่งเศสก็ที่สนับสนุนให้เยาวชนไทยไปศึกษาในประเทศฝรั่งเศสด้วยจำนวนมาก

ผู้ที่มีบทบาทโดดเด่นมากต่อวงการภาษาฝรั่งเศสคือสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าพี่นางเธอเจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนาฯ ทรงรับเป็นอาจารย์ประจำ สอนฝรั่งเศส ที่มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์และสถาบันอื่นๆ อีกหลายแห่ง ต่อมาได้ทรงก่อตั้งสมาคมครูภาษาฝรั่งเศสแห่งประเทศไทย ซึ่งปัจจุบันมีอายุ 48 ปี แล้ว การก่อตั้งสมาคมนี้ก็เพื่อเป็นการยกระดับมาตรฐานและเป็นศูนย์กลางสนับสนุนครูภาษาฝรั่งเศส ภายหลังที่สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าพี่นางเธอฯ สมเด็จพระกนิษฐาธิราชเจ้า กรมสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารีผู้ทรงพระปรีชาสามารถในภาษาฝรั่งเศสอย่างลึกซึ้ง ก็ทรงรับสมาคมครูฝรั่งเศสไว้ในพระราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ทั้งยังทรงเป็นองค์นายกกิตติมศักดิ์ของสมาคมฯ ด้วย เรารู้สึกทราบซึ้งเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่พระองค์ท่านทรงเมตตา

สำหรับปัจจุบันนี้ สมาคมครูฝรั่งเศสได้ทำงานอย่างเข้มแข็งต่อเนื่องและมีบทบาทมากขึ้นเป็นลำดับ มีภารกิจสำคัญหลายประการ

ตัวอย่างเช่น

- การจัดอบรม และพัฒนาครู เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับแนวทางการสอนสมัยใหม่

- การแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้ และเป็นองค์การที่จะเจรจาขอ ความร่วมมือ จากประเทศที่ใช้ภาษาฝรั่งเศส เช่น สวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ราชอาณาจักรเบลเยียม เป็นต้น

- สมาคมเป็นสะพานเชื่อม กับสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฝรั่งเศส และสถานเอกอัครราชทูตอื่นๆที่ใช้ภาษาฝรั่งเศส ทั้งองค์กรนานาชาติอื่นๆ เช่น Organisation internationale de la Francophonie

(OIF)

- สำหรับการเรียนการสอน สมาคมก็สนับสนุนให้ นักเรียนนักศึกษาได้มีกิจกรรมร่วมกัน พบปะ และแข่งขันความสามารถ ด้าน ต่างๆ ทั้ง ฟัง พูด อ่าน เขียน เป็นเวทีให้นักเรียนนักศึกษาได้สัมผัสภาษาและวัฒนธรรมภาษาฝรั่งเศส โดยสมเด็จพระกนิษฐาธิราชเจ้าฯเสด็จทอดพระเนตรทุกปี

- การที่สมาคมดำเนินกิจกรรมและบทบาทต่างๆก็เป็นการสร้างชุมชนวิชาชีพครูภาษาฝรั่งเศสให้เข้มแข็งและมีโอกาสไปเพิ่มพูนความรู้ในประเทศฝรั่งเศสและประเทศที่ใช้ภาษาฝรั่งเศส

ทั้งหมดนี้ทำให้การเรียนการสอบภาษาฝรั่งศสยังคงยืนหยัดและพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องต่อไป
