Shownotes

In the fast-paced world of business, people often view procrastination with apprehension. They commonly associate it with missed deadlines, incomplete tasks, and unfulfilled promises. We, too, used to perceive procrastination negatively, as it seemed to hinder productivity. But in this episode, we invite you to join us on a journey where we challenge this notion. We explore procrastination not as a hindrance but as a force that can benefit both you and your business.

Procrastination as a Time for Reflection

Consequently, when we take a step back without rushing against deadlines, we create an atmosphere that significantly enhances our decision-making process. This period of thoughtful reflection, believe it or not, can significantly enhance our decision-making process.

Fostering Creativity and Innovation

Likewise, when we let our minds meander through moments of idleness, we free our minds to wander and explore new ideas. These brief, seemingly unproductive periods can be fertile ground for creativity and innovation. Some of the greatest breakthroughs in history have emerged during procrastination when the brain makes unexpected connections.

Preventing Burnout

Moreover, the world of business often resembles a relentless marathon. In our quest for

success, burnout looms as a potential threat. Therefore, procrastination serves as a safety valve that allows you and your team to step back, recharge, and avoid the brick wall of exhaustion.

Strategic Advantage and Task Filtering

Meanwhile, the business landscape is ever-evolving, with new strategies, technologies, and social platforms emerging. By strategically delaying decisions and implementations, we can gain valuable insights and minimize impulsive choices. Procrastination can be a strategic advantage in this dynamic environment.

Similarly, procrastination helps filter out tasks that don't warrant immediate attention. It conserves your time, energy, and resources, making you a more productive asset in your business.

Conclusion

In summary, procrastination isn't merely a negative attribute to be eliminated. Instead, it's a multifaceted tool that offers time for reflection, fosters creativity and innovation, prevents burnout, and can be strategically advantageous. Therefore, we urge you to embrace procrastination as a valuable force for good in your business journey.

Nonetheless, it's important to remember that procrastination should be approached mindfully. It's not an excuse for avoiding essential tasks but a chance to harness its positive aspects strategically. By doing so, you can discover the uncharted potential of procrastination in enhancing your business endeavours.

Hi folks. Welcome to another weekly episode on I Hate Numbers. This is the podcast that's got a mission to help you and your business make more money, (who doesn't want that?) improve your financial awareness and financial literacy, reduce your stress and anxiety and your tax bill to boot and for you to have the business that you aspire to.

::

I've done that for thousands of businesses over the last 30 years. And I want that for you. Let's crack on with the podcast. Now, procrastination is seen as the tendency to avoid or delay those necessary tasks or vital decisions you have to make in your business. Those are the tasks which are important for our business, which take us

::

a further step towards our Northern Star, towards our sense of what our goals and objectives actually are. Those necessary tasks could be from following up those customer calls, making sure we finalise our mailing systems to make sure they're effective, completing our financial plans, looking into the future, looking through the windscreen of our business.

::

Whatever that might be, those are the tasks that we might be put off. So why is procrastination seen as a positive, as a force for good? What's the silver lining that we're not actually seeing? Well, one way that it can be a force for good is it gives us time to take a step back, not to rush into a decision, and it can improve our decision making.

::

It can also improve our creativity, and it gives us that valuable time for thoughtful reflection, coming to a better informed conclusion that's more rounded and this period of contemplation allows us for a much deeper insight and analysis of all the outcomes we're likely to have, the risks and the benefits that will befall us.

::

What else can come through the positive spinoff of procrastination? Creativity and innovation. Our brains, a vital organ in our bodies, requires energy, and occasionally it also needs time - time for you to meander, those moments of idleness, our mind is free to wander and explore and investigate new ideas.

::

And what some might consider an unproductive period of time can actually be a fantastic fertile ground for creativity and innovation. Many of the great breakthroughs that we've seen in our lives and through history, those creative solutions have emerged during those periods of procrastination, as the brain makes those what might seem to the outside world unexpected connections,

::

insights. When we're under immense pressure, those connections may not be forthcoming. Here's another reason for you, to consider why procrastination can be a force for good, why it can be positive. And that's in terms of helping prevent burnout. Now it's not unusual in business for the business owners and their team to experience burnout. Expending a lot of energy, taking a lot of stress here and before you know it, you could be facing that brick wall, you could be facing that period of burnout and burnout, A, is not a good look It's a real risk to our well being and it can seriously derail us from enjoying our business and taking our business forward. Procrastination can step forward and act as that safety valve That safety valve allows us and our teams to step back and recharge.

::

It's good for you to take those short breaks from intense work activity. You don't want exhaustion. Exhaustion is not good for your well being. It's not good for your physical health. And it makes you an unproductive asset in your business. Being fresh, not facing those periods of burnout will lead to productivity in the long run.

::

It gives us that chance to regain focus and perspective. And who wouldn't want that? Are there any other positive aspects of procrastination? There certainly are. Now our business landscape constantly evolves. We don't operate in a vacuum. We don't operate in static times. And sometimes procrastination can be a strategic advantage.

::

By holding back, holding off, implementing new ways of doing things, new strategies, new technologies, we can pause, reflect, and actually see what happens with those new technologies, those new systems, those new ways of working, those new social platforms that were bombarded with, and we can minimise the risk, can be our ally.

::

One of the last considerations for the positivity of procrastination is avoiding those unnecessary tasks. Now, not every task that comes across our intray, not every task around us, requires our immediate focused attention. Procrastination can help us filter out those tasks that would otherwise have absorbed our time, our energy, and our bank balance.

::

When we use that judiciously, procrastination can be a vital and valuable tool in our toolkit. Ultimately, this is what can lead to long term success and sustainability. So folks, those are some thoughts as to why procrastination isn't always a negative attribute, it's not always a negative feature. It can be very positive, it allows that brain to relax, it allows us to recharge, prevent burnout, not rushing into decision making.

::

Contemplation, relaxation can be as powerful as a frenetic work pace. What do you think? Have you experienced those periods of procrastination where you've seen it as a positive thing, a force for good? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. And I hope you've got some value out of this podcast. And if you feel that others may benefit, I'd love it if you could share it with them.

::

And hey, if you can go on to the appropriate podcast platforms, give it a thumbs up, give some feedback. That'd be superb and helps get the message out even further. Until next time folks, enjoy your procrastination.

::

We hope you enjoyed this episode and appreciate you taking the time to listen to the show. We hope you got some value. If you did, then we'd love it if you shared the episode. We look forward to you joining us next week for another I Hate Numbers episode.
