G'day, Dave here.
Speaker:Welcome to Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker:What's something that you're really good at? Everyone has different sorts of things that
Speaker:they're good at.
Speaker:Maybe it's being really creative with your
Speaker:hands.
Speaker:You like making things.
Speaker:Maybe it's singing, maybe it's sport.
Speaker:Maybe you like to cook, or you're excellent at board games, or you're great at certain school
Speaker:subjects.
Speaker:You could be great at tying up other people's
Speaker:shoelaces, or archery, or you have a really great sense of humour.
Speaker:What are you great at?
Speaker:Here's an even more important question.
Speaker:Why are you great at it? What makes you so great at it?
Speaker:How did you end up being great at it? In today's episode, King Nebuchadnezzar thinks
Speaker:he's the greatest in all the world.
Speaker:He's about to learn a really important lesson, though, about where that greatness has come
Speaker:from.
Speaker:About who that greatness has come from.
Speaker:Get ready for our next episode of Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker:At the end of our last episode, King Nebuchadnezzar was amazed by God.
Speaker:The king had thought that he was so powerful, there was no God who could save anyone from
Speaker:him.
Speaker:But that's because he didn't know the one true God.
Speaker:God saved Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the king and his blazing furnace.
Speaker:And the king had to back down.
Speaker:He was so amazed, he ordered that nothing bad
Speaker:could be said about this God.
Speaker:But that doesn't mean that he trusted God yet.
Speaker:Daniel chapter four starts with a letter from King Nebuchadnezzar.
Speaker:It's sent to all the different peoples and languages and countries in his empire.
Speaker:Surprisingly, it's a letter where he wants to tell people about how great God is.
Speaker:He says in verse two, the most high God has done miracles and wonderful things for me.
Speaker:I am happy to tell you about these things.
Speaker:The things he has done are great.
Speaker:His miracles are mighty.
Speaker:His kingdom continues forever.
Speaker:His rule will continue for all time.
Speaker:Isn't that interesting?
Speaker:Back in chapter two, we heard about how God's kingdom will last forever and how
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar's won't.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar didn't seem to believe it then, though now he does.
Speaker:What's happened? What's changed?
Speaker:Well, that's what this letter is all about.
Speaker:He wants everyone to know how God taught him
Speaker:about God's greatness.
Speaker:And it starts just like back in chapter two, with a dream.
Speaker:The dream comes at a time when everything seems Great for the kingdom.
Speaker:Everything's going well.
Speaker:The empire is thriving.
Speaker:He says in verse four, I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at my palace.
Speaker:I was happy and successful.
Speaker:I had a dream that made me afraid.
Speaker:As I was lying on my bed, I saw pictures and visions in my mind.
Speaker:Those things made me very afraid.
Speaker:So I gave an order.
Speaker:All the wise men of Babylon were to be brought to me.
Speaker:I wanted them to tell me what my dream meant.
Speaker:The fortune tellers, magicians and wise men
Speaker:came.
Speaker:I told them about the dream, but those men
Speaker:could not tell me what it meant.
Speaker:This is sounding more and more like the last dream, isn't it?
Speaker:It terrifies him.
Speaker:None of the wise men can tell him what it
Speaker:means.
Speaker:Although at least this time he seems to have
Speaker:told them what the dream actually was.
Speaker:Finally, Daniel comes in, the one who God's used before to help the king.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar doesn't call him Daniel, though.
Speaker:He calls him Belteshazzar, the Babylonian name that was given to him.
Speaker:It's a name that comes from a Babylonian God, Bel.
Speaker:That isn't the God who Daniel serves, though.
Speaker:And the king understands that there's
Speaker:something special about Daniel.
Speaker:He says in verse eight, belteshazzar, you are
Speaker:the most important of all the fortune tellers.
Speaker:I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you.
Speaker:I know there is no secret that is too hard for you to understand.
Speaker:He still doesn't get that it all comes from the one true God.
Speaker:But at least he gets that Daniel has a special connection to God or the gods, as he thinks.
Speaker:And then he describes the dream in verse 10.
Speaker:He says, I looked, and there in front of me
Speaker:was a tree.
Speaker:It was standing in the middle of the earth.
Speaker:The tree was very tall.
Speaker:The tree grew large and strong.
Speaker:The top of the tree touched the sky.
Speaker:It could be seen from anywhere on earth.
Speaker:The leaves of the tree were beautiful.
Speaker:It had plenty of good fruit on it.
Speaker:On the tree was food for everyone.
Speaker:The wild animals found shelter under the tree and the birds lived in its branches.
Speaker:Every animal ate from it.
Speaker:That's a really lovely picture, don't you think?
Speaker:This massive tree can be seen from anywhere on the earth.
Speaker:It's providing cool shade, protection from danger, food for all the animals.
Speaker:I'd love to be under a tree like that.
Speaker:But then something shocking happens to the tree.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar says, and then I saw a holy angel coming down from heaven.
Speaker:He spoke very loudly.
Speaker:He said, cut down the tree and cut off its
Speaker:branches.
Speaker:Strip off Its leaves scatter the fruit around.
Speaker:Let the animals that are under the tree run away.
Speaker:Let the birds that were in its branches fly away.
Speaker:But let the stump and its roots stay in the ground.
Speaker:Put a band of iron and bronze around it.
Speaker:Let it stay in the field with the grass around
Speaker:it.
Speaker:This beautiful, massive, wonderful tree is destroyed, although because the stump is left
Speaker:in the ground, there is hope that it can grow again.
Speaker:But for now, it's pretty bad.
Speaker:Then something really strange happens.
Speaker:The angel starts talking about the tree, not
Speaker:as a tree, but as a person.
Speaker:A person that's gone from being really great, from having lots of power and money and stuff,
Speaker:to having to live like an animal.
Speaker:The angel says, let the man become wet with
Speaker:dew.
Speaker:Let him live among the animals and plants of the earth.
Speaker:Let him not think like a man any longer.
Speaker:Let him have the mind of an animal.
Speaker:And he says, this is going to go on for seven times.
Speaker:Who knows how long that is? Seven days, seven months, seven years.
Speaker:God's decided not to tell us.
Speaker:It's the perfect amount of time, though.
Speaker:The perfect amount of time to achieve what?
Speaker:What's supposed to happen to this person who loses their mind and starts living like an
Speaker:animal? What's it all for?
Speaker:Thankfully, we don't have to guess.
Speaker:We're told it's so that people will know that God's in charge.
Speaker:Kings like to think that they're in charge of kingdoms, but it's God who put them in charge
Speaker:in the first place.
Speaker:He decides who gets to rule.
Speaker:We're told in verse 17.
Speaker:This is so that all the people may know that the most high God rules over the kingdoms of
Speaker:men.
Speaker:God gives those kingdoms to anyone he wants, and he chooses people to rule them who are not
Speaker:proud.
Speaker:Then the king says to Daniel, this is what I, King Nebuchadnezzar, dreamed.
Speaker:Now, Daniel, called Belteshazzar, tell me what the dream means.
Speaker:None of the wise men in my kingdom can explain it to me, but you can, because the spirit of
Speaker:the holy gods is in you.
Speaker:Daniel is so shocked by the dream that for a moment he can't even speak.
Speaker:Have you ever had that? When someone says something so unexpected and
Speaker:so shocking that you just can't think of anything to say?
Speaker:And the king's like, don't be afraid, Daniel.
Speaker:Just tell me what it all means?
Speaker:And Daniel says, in verse 19, my master, I wish the dream were about your enemies, and I
Speaker:wish its meaning were for those who are against you.
Speaker:That can't be good news for Nebuchadnezzar can it.
Speaker:He continues, you saw a tree in your dream.
Speaker:The tree grew large and strong.
Speaker:Its top touched the sky.
Speaker:It could be seen from all over the earth.
Speaker:Its leaves were beautiful and it had plenty of fruit.
Speaker:The fruit gave food for everyone.
Speaker:It was a home for the wild animals, and its
Speaker:branches were nesting places for the birds.
Speaker:That is the tree you saw, my king.
Speaker:You are that tree.
Speaker:In a sense, that sounds pretty good for the king.
Speaker:Daniel says, you've become great and powerful.
Speaker:You're like the tall tree that touched the
Speaker:sky, and your power reaches to the far parts of the earth.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar is the king of a massive kingdom with lots and lots of other countries
Speaker:in it and lots of people speaking lots of languages.
Speaker:It's like they've all come under his branches.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar is really great.
Speaker:But remember what happens to the tree in the dream.
Speaker:In verse 24, Daniel says, this is the meaning of the dream.
Speaker:My king, the most holy God has commanded these things to happen to my master, the king.
Speaker:You will be forced away from people.
Speaker:You will live among the wild animals.
Speaker:People will feed you grass like an ox, and dew
Speaker:from the sky will make you wet.
Speaker:Seven years or seven times, however long that is, will pass.
Speaker:And then you'll learn this lesson.
Speaker:The most high God is ruler over the kingdom of
Speaker:men, and the most high God gives those kingdoms to anyone he wants.
Speaker:This is what Nebuchadnezzar needs to learn.
Speaker:He needs to learn that everything he has, all the power, all the greatness, being able to
Speaker:rule this great kingdom, it isn't because he's great.
Speaker:It's because God's great.
Speaker:God's decided to give it to him, and God can just as easily take it away from him.
Speaker:Daniel warns Nebuchadnezzar.
Speaker:He's like, don't wait to learn the lesson.
Speaker:Turn away from evil right now.
Speaker:Start treating people the way God wants you to
Speaker:treat them.
Speaker:Start treat God properly.
Speaker:And that's really good advice.
Speaker:But everything happens just like God said it would.
Speaker:Twelve months later, King Nebuchadnezzar is walking on the roof of his palace.
Speaker:It's a flat roof.
Speaker:He's looking out over his beautiful city, the
Speaker:beating heart of his magnificent empire.
Speaker:He's happy, calm, and he thinks he's pretty awesome.
Speaker:He doesn't look out and think, wow, I can't believe God's given me all this.
Speaker:No, he just thinks he's really great.
Speaker:In verse 30, he says to himself, look at Babylon.
Speaker:I built this great city.
Speaker:It is my palace.
Speaker:I built this great place by my power to show how great I am.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar has not learned his lesson yet.
Speaker:And so God's going to teach him who's really in charge, who's really the one who makes
Speaker:people great and gives them kingdoms.
Speaker:Verse 31 says the words were still in his
Speaker:mouth when a voice came from heaven.
Speaker:The voice said, king Nebuchadnezzar, these things will happen to you.
Speaker:Your royal power has been taken away from you.
Speaker:You will be forced away from people.
Speaker:You will live with the wild animals.
Speaker:You will be fed grass like an ox.
Speaker:Seven times will pass before you learn this
Speaker:lesson.
Speaker:The most high God rules over the kingdoms of
Speaker:men.
Speaker:And the most high God gives those kingdoms to
Speaker:anyone he wants.
Speaker:And that's exactly what happens.
Speaker:All of Nebuchadnezzar's power, all his money, all his fame, gets ripped away.
Speaker:He never had it because he was great.
Speaker:He only had it because God's great.
Speaker:We're told in verse 33, those things happened quickly.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar was forced to go away from people.
Speaker:He began eating grass like an ox.
Speaker:He became wet from dew.
Speaker:His hair grew long like the feathers of an eagle.
Speaker:And his nails grew long like the claws of a bird.
Speaker:He's become a wild man living out in the fields.
Speaker:His mind is gone, so he can't even think straight.
Speaker:He used to eat luxurious meals, now he eats grass.
Speaker:He used to have the perfect hairstyle.
Speaker:Now it's wild and long.
Speaker:He can't even take care of his fingernails.
Speaker:How different is that to being the ruler of one of the most powerful kingdoms in the
Speaker:world? It's like a massive, glorious tree.
Speaker:The sort of tree that you could imagine living forever, suddenly being chopped down and used
Speaker:as firewood.
Speaker:God gave him the kingdom and God took it away.
Speaker:All the power is in God's hands.
Speaker:You might not have realised this, but God's actually being really kind to Nebuchadnezzar
Speaker:here.
Speaker:God's shown him a few things in the past, and
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar's just kind of ignored him or forgotten about him.
Speaker:God could easily just chuck him out and get rid of him forever, have him killed.
Speaker:But instead, God's being really kind and teaching him a lesson.
Speaker:And so, at just the right time, as Nebuchadnezzar, sitting in a field covered in
Speaker:dew, chomping away on some grass, he looks up to the sky and God gives him his mind back
Speaker:again.
Speaker:Suddenly, it all comes flooding back.
Speaker:The memory of his kingdom of his life before
Speaker:all this, of his dream and the God who gave it to him.
Speaker:And immediately he understands who's really in charge, who's really great.
Speaker:It certainly isn't him.
Speaker:If it was him, he'd have been able to hold
Speaker:onto his kingdom.
Speaker:But it's not him, it's God.
Speaker:And it always has been.
Speaker:So he starts praising God.
Speaker:He tells us in verse 34, I gave honour and glory to him who lives forever.
Speaker:God's rule is forever.
Speaker:His kingdom continues for all time.
Speaker:People on earth are not truly important.
Speaker:God does what he wants with the powers of
Speaker:heaven and the peoples on earth.
Speaker:No one can stop his powerful hand.
Speaker:No one can question the things he does.
Speaker:And then, just like God said he would, because he's faithful, remember, he gives it all back
Speaker:to Nebuchadnezzar.
Speaker:Everything.
Speaker:Some people come looking for him in the field and they make him king again.
Speaker:In fact, he says, he became even greater and more powerful than before.
Speaker:Something's changed, though.
Speaker:Nebuchadnezzar's changed.
Speaker:Now when he has all this power and money and greatness and glory, he doesn't think to
Speaker:himself, how awesome am I?
Speaker:He thinks, how awesome is God.
Speaker:Because he knows that it's all come from God.
Speaker:And he wants his entire empire to know that as
Speaker:well.
Speaker:That's why he's writing this letter to people
Speaker:of every nation and language and culture.
Speaker:He finishes off his letter in verse 37 with these.
Speaker:Now, I, Nebuchadnezzar, give praise and honour and glory to the King of Heaven.
Speaker:Everything he does is right.
Speaker:He is always fair, and he is able to make
Speaker:proud people humble.
Speaker:You know, if we could hear from everyone who's listening to this podcast about all the
Speaker:different things you're great at, it would be amazing.
Speaker:There'd be so much skill and fun and abilities and knowledge.
Speaker:It'd be great.
Speaker:But where does that greatness come from?
Speaker:Did you get it yourself?
Speaker:No.
Speaker:God's given it to you.
Speaker:God's given you the abilities and knowledge
Speaker:and opportunities and time.
Speaker:It's all from him.
Speaker:It doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy it, but even more, enjoy the God who gave it to you.
Speaker:Give him the glory.
Speaker:Tell people how great he is.
Speaker:Say thanks to him for everything he's given to you back in Babylon.
Speaker:After a while, a new king's going to come to power.
Speaker:A new king who knows all about Nebuchadnezzar, which means he should know all about God.
Speaker:Will he understand what Nebuchadnezzar had to learn about God though.
Speaker:Well, that's a story for Hi again, a couple of quick announcements before we finish.
