Shownotes

In this debut episode of Miss Brightside – Power of Positivity, Lisa shares her honest take on why January can feel overwhelming and how to resist the pressure of resolutions, fad diets, and fitness algorithms. From gym stories to snack-fuelled confessions, she reminds us that self-kindness matters more than chasing unrealistic expectations.

Lisa encourages listeners to:

  1. Let go of January guilt and do what makes you happy.
  2. Embrace comfort — whether that’s a cozy TV marathon, a chocolate biscuit, or a laugh with friends.
  3. Recognize that health is personal, not defined by Instagram models or calorie counts.
  4. Spread joy by giving compliments and lifting others up instead of criticism.

This episode is all about surviving the toughest month of the year with humor, warmth, and positivity. As Lisa says: “See the positives even in the little things.”

Takeaway: Don’t feel the pressure — choose kindness, comfort, and joy this January.

Speaker A:

Welcome to my first ever podcast, the Power of Positivity by Ms. Brightside Me, Lisa Jones.

Speaker A:

Welcome to my humble recording studio, AKA my spare bedroom where I'm gonna meet with you, discuss lots of topics around, all the positive things that we need to be looking at and how we give ourselves a bit more credit in this life.

Speaker A:

First of all, first topic of the day is love all our flaws.

Speaker A:

It's January, it's miserable, Christmas is over and done with and why flooding the market is you need to be skinnier.

Speaker A:

Is she on the job?

Speaker A:

Have we been for a walk yet?

Speaker A:

Are you Carling counting?

Speaker A:

Have we joined any of the things that are on offer for losing a bit of weight?

Speaker A:

And guess what?

Speaker A:

No, I haven't.

Speaker A:

This is all about making you feel more body confident.

Speaker A:

The world around you this week is going to be constantly commenting on what you're eating.

Speaker A:

Have you been for a walk?

Speaker A:

All the usual things that make us feel just a little bit more rubbish about our bodies.

Speaker A:

But what we've got to remember is every single one of us is unique.

Speaker A:

Our bodies are absolutely beautiful.

Speaker A:

What social media will make us do is compare ourselves to things that absolutely aren't normal in our society.

Speaker A:

I give you an example.

Speaker A:

Somebody I listened to recently said it's a school gate theory.

Speaker A:

So back in the day when my mom used to come and get me from school, they would be a different group of mothers.

Speaker A:

It'd be maybe the fitness man, but everybody else around there would be a curvy, what we would call normal body where they'd be fully themselves.

Speaker A:

We didn't have anybody to compare ourselves to.

Speaker A:

And the algorithm showing us unattainable, the ideal image of what we thought a woman should be.

Speaker A:

If I look around the people and the women I know and the men, most of them are healthy, got curvy bodies and do you know what that is?

Speaker A:

What I aspire to be happy in my skin.

Speaker A:

There's nothing wrong if you're looking to feel a little bit healthier this year.

Speaker A:

There's nothing wrong with feeling a bit better than yourself.

Speaker A:

But all I would stress to you is don't compare yourselves to the ideology that you'll be shown online.

Speaker A:

So you'll be shown the fitness models, the six packs.

Speaker A:

You can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Speaker A:

So if you want to go out there and you want to feel better in your body and you want to fit in your small clothes because you've eaten a little bit much too much over Christmas, that's absolutely fine.

Speaker A:

But guess what?

Speaker A:

You don't have to.

Speaker A:

You don't have to be under the pressure.

Speaker A:

If it makes you feel a little bit better because your knees are aching, remind you as I go up the stairs and the girls are working better all the time how much my knees ache when I get to the top of the stairs.

Speaker A:

That's absolutely fine, too.

Speaker A:

You are absolutely beautiful.

Speaker A:

You do not need that weight loss shape.

Speaker A:

You do not need that job.

Speaker A:

You just need to believe that you are beautiful in the skin you're in.

Speaker A:

And this is where we need to have a little bit more positivity around the way we speak to each other.

Speaker A:

So this is my little action for you this week.

Speaker A:

You may have a colleague, a friend, a mom, an auntie, a nan.

Speaker A:

I feel like nan haven't got any filters.

Speaker A:

My nan's never used to.

Speaker A:

Oh, looking a bit chunky.

Speaker A:

You are.

Speaker A:

Lisa, are you seeing or put a bit of weight down avenue?

Speaker A:

We don't need those negative connotations.

Speaker A:

Let's start complimenting each other on the things we like.

Speaker A:

Don't say the unkind things.

Speaker A:

If you really don't like somebody's shoes, don't comment on it.

Speaker A:

If you don't like somebody's got on, don't comment on it.

Speaker A:

Point out the nice things in life.

Speaker A:

So if you like somebody's dress, tell them.

Speaker A:

If you like what they're wearing, tell them.

Speaker A:

It's all about chain, that positive outlook on life.

Speaker A:

Instead of pointing out the negatives, let's point out the positives.

Speaker A:

I feel like sometimes people think they've got the right to comment on how we look, what we wear and how we are as a person.

Speaker A:

I know they am go right.

Speaker A:

We take control by sharing that positivity instead.

Speaker A:

So my action for this you this week is to say something nice.

Speaker A:

Whether somebody, you know, compliment somebody on something nice about them before anything else, it'll make them feel nice.

Speaker A:

And you know what makes you feel better, too?

Speaker A:

You are beautiful.

Speaker A:

You do not need to go on that fitness journey.

Speaker A:

Do not feel that peer pressure this week.

Speaker A:

You may hear somebody say, do you know how many calories is in that?

Speaker A:

Do you know?

Speaker A:

You should be walking up the stairs and the conversation will all be around how you look, how you feel.

Speaker A:

The chocolates will be brought into work and people will be going, oh, car Allen in the house.

Speaker A:

Have eaten too much.

Speaker A:

We've enjoyed ourselves.

Speaker A:

We've had a Christmas period of absolute joy.

Speaker A:

So this is my reminder to you to not feel our negativity this week, to not feel our peer pressure.

Speaker A:

We are beautiful and not enough people tell us that.

Speaker A:

Get your favorite dress on this week, make your favorite tea, get your hair done, whatever makes you feel good.

Speaker A:

It is January, it is a tough time of year after and spending loads of money.

Speaker A:

So even if you can't do that, do something you enjoy.

Speaker A:

Whether it's watching your favourite program or meeting up with a friend for a coffee.

Speaker A:

Do what makes your heart happy.

Speaker A:

So as a reminder, don't let the negativity get you this week.

Speaker A:

You are beautiful.

Speaker A:

Love the skin you're in.

Speaker A:

One body.

Speaker A:

We've got be absolutely celebrating it.

Speaker A:

We wouldn't be standing here today without it.

Speaker A:

And sometimes I think we take it for granted how much our body does for us obviously keeps us alive.

Speaker A:

But you know, this is all about not putting yourself down this week.

Speaker A:

Love the skin you're in, even all the stretch marks.

Speaker B:

Thanks for listening today.

Speaker B:

If you've enjoyed don't forget to leave me a review on Podchaser or if you've got a topic you think I should discuss, please let me know by adding a comment to my Instagram.

Speaker B:

Just a reminder before I sign off.

Speaker B:

Each and every one of us is unique and that is a superpower.

Speaker B:

Believe in yourself.

Speaker B:

You can boil your mind to anything.

Speaker A:

You want to do.

Speaker A:

See the positives, even in the little things.

Speaker B:

Have a great week.
