Angels at the Final Judgment

Show Notes

Last time, we looked at angels as interpreters — messengers sent to help God's people understand visions beyond their comprehension. An angel appearing in bronze led Ezekiel through a vision of the temple. Angelic beings explained Daniel's visions of the four beasts.

Today, we turn to a different role angels play — not explaining what's to come, but their presence at the final judgment. Angels will serve as: 1. Reapers gathering the harvest; 2. Trumpeters calling the elect home; and 3. A mighty company surrounding Christ Himself at His return.

And He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Matthew 24:31

Angels will gather the elect at Christ's return. The "four winds" represent the four points of the compass – N / S / E / W. The elect will be gathered from every place under the sky, since that is how far the Gospel of the kingdom will have been preached. Although all nations of the earth will mourn, the elect will be drawn from every tribe, tongue, and nation.

We have observed angels show up exactly where God's people needed them most. Last time, they were interpreters — patient, present, willing to explain. Today, they're something different: reapers, gatherers, a mighty company surrounding Christ Himself.

Put those two roles together, and you get a fuller picture of what angels are doing throughout Scripture — not background characters, but obedient messengers, sent to help us understand today and to accompany Christ on that final day.

Head to Heart

We are called to participate in sowing the Gospel seed. Jesus said to the disciples, “You shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Where are you sowing the seed of the Gospel today?
