2

:

What's up?

3

:

We are glad that you're with us.

4

:

We are some of you are with us

on Instagram live right now.

5

:

Just a few.

6

:

But if actually six, I'm

counting it right now.

7

:

There are six people who are

watching this being recorded live.

8

:

This is why you should follow us

on Instagram because you never

9

:

know when we're going to go live.

something that you're going

12

:

to listen to in three days.

13

:

Yeah you're a part of our Googling.

14

:

Welcome.

15

:

This is like inception.

16

:

This is the kind of stuff that

they do Patreon tiers for.

17

:

We'll let you watch us

live as we record it.

18

:

I'm saying some people charge, but we

prefer to give the gospel free of charge.

19

:

Boom.

20

:

So there's that.

21

:

Put that on a t shirt.

22

:

We might.

23

:

We give the gospel free of charge.

24

:

Sign up for our Patreon

by giving to our church.

25

:

Hey, how did women's Bible study go?

26

:

I heard good things about it.

27

:

Kristen texted me and said it

was really good as per the usual.

28

:

No, I heard good things from

my wife as well about it.

29

:

I haven't gotten a chance to listen to it

myself yet, but you listen to her sermons.

30

:

Sometimes I do.

31

:

Yeah.

32

:

Do you take notes?

33

:

Yeah.

34

:

I feel like as the lead pastor

of our church, I should have

35

:

a general understanding of

what's going on in the church.

36

:

That's a good idea.

37

:

I walk through her manuscript

and everything with her

38

:

before she goes up there.

39

:

So I know what she's going to

How many pages is her manuscript?

40

:

I'm Listen, man, I'm not

going to sell my wife out.

41

:

I'm not throwing her under the bus.

42

:

We're not selling out anybody.

43

:

She told everybody that was in earshot.

44

:

It was a circle of trust.

45

:

That was how it, that

was trying to blow it up.

46

:

I'm not blowing it up.

47

:

I'm just asking the question.

48

:

Yeah.

49

:

No inquiring minds want to know.

50

:

She launched Ephesians though.

51

:

And she's doing a great job.

52

:

She was talking about our adoption

and the significance of our adoption

53

:

for those ladies as daughters of God.

54

:

And Ephesians quite well, cause you just

went through it with the youth, not long.

55

:

I went through it faster

than she probably will.

56

:

Yeah.

57

:

Yeah.

58

:

Yeah.

59

:

Yeah.

60

:

Because I was doing high level.

61

:

Yeah.

62

:

Yeah.

63

:

I didn't do that with the

gospel of Matthew so far.

64

:

I've been taking it much too slow They

wouldn't finish the gospel of Matthew

65

:

until they all graduated at this point.

66

:

So we're gonna speed it up hey speaking

of gospels, we're gonna finish the gospel

67

:

of john by the end of may is that right?

68

:

And listen, this is god's providence.

69

:

You ready for this?

70

:

I'm ready.

71

:

Okay, so The chapter or the

section on the crucifixion is

72

:

going to fall on Good Friday.

73

:

I know we talked about this, that

it was going to be just off, but

74

:

I rearranged things believable.

75

:

So we're going to hit the crucifixion

on Good Friday and then surprise

76

:

the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

77

:

No way.

78

:

Yep.

79

:

It's going to happen.

80

:

I am.

81

:

Slack jawed.

82

:

Yep.

83

:

Yeah.

84

:

You should not be.

85

:

My flabber has been gasted.

86

:

Okay, I don't even know.

87

:

I don't know what to do with that.

88

:

Men's Bible study on Saturday though.

89

:

We are kicking off a brand new series.

90

:

Oh, yeah.

91

:

Qualified.

92

:

That's right.

93

:

We're going to talk about what it is to be

a qualified man for the office of elder.

94

:

Even though we're not expecting

every man to be a pastor slash

95

:

elder, we do want every man to be

qualified for the role of pastor.

96

:

Because it's the kind of character

that we want to inculcate

97

:

and encourage in our ranks.

98

:

Inculcate.

99

:

That's an SAT word for you, by the way.

100

:

That's right.

101

:

Yeah.

102

:

I'll drop them every now and then boom,

might drop to, and then just walk away.

103

:

Yeah.

104

:

How about our men's retreat?

105

:

Do you want to give a little preview

of what that's going to be on?

106

:

Yes.

107

:

We're calling it.

108

:

Uncompromised.

109

:

And so essentially we're

looking at a retreat.

110

:

That's going to focus on

integrity, and a few key areas.

111

:

And I'm debating whether or not I

want to tell you what those areas are,

112

:

although you probably could guess, but

we want to make this something awesome.

113

:

So we're already working on some things to

give away, which I think you're going to I

114

:

just submitted an order for those things.

115

:

And.

116

:

And we're actively working toward

that already setting up some of the

117

:

major pieces, but this is going to be

something I'm really excited about.

118

:

This is an area that every man will

benefit from an area that every man

119

:

probably struggles in one way, shape,

or form at some point in his life.

120

:

This will be well worth your time.

121

:

Yeah.

122

:

In fact, on Saturday, I had my son

Jonathan at his basketball game and the

123

:

coach, I appreciated this before the game.

124

:

He said, Hey.

125

:

Does anybody know what

our word of the day is?

126

:

And I'm like pulling out my wordle

thinking, okay, maybe it's, he's going

127

:

to give me the answer on wordle, but he

does a word of the day with these young

128

:

men as he's coaching them basketball.

129

:

And he said, our word

of the day is integrity.

130

:

And so he said, do you guys

know what integrity is?

131

:

And these eight year olds are

sitting there No, we have no idea.

132

:

So he was talking about how it's

correlated or related to honesty.

133

:

And and so that's what he chose

to emphasize on their honesty

134

:

and the things that we do, our

work ethic, everything else.

135

:

So yeah, this is going

to be a great topic.

136

:

It's good for eight year olds.

137

:

It's good for eight year olds.

138

:

It's good for everybody in between too.

139

:

So yeah, there's, in fact, we should

probably tell you when the dates are for

140

:

that so that you could earmark them in

your calendar so that you don't miss them.

141

:

Yes.

142

:

Cause that'd be tragic.

143

:

That would be tragic.

144

:

And it's may.

145

:

May 1st.

146

:

It's in May.

147

:

I'm gonna tell you right now.

148

:

It's in May.

149

:

It's May and it's gonna

be May 16th and 17th.

150

:

That's what it is Friday and a Saturday.

151

:

We'll leave on Friday.

152

:

We'll have one night there We're gonna

be back at Mount Lebanon Baptist Camp

153

:

such a good place It was a great place

and I can't wait to get back there

154

:

again Hopefully the weather's a little

better this year, but we're gonna

155

:

be there again, May 16th and 17th.

156

:

Please mark it in your calendars

We would love to have Every

157

:

single one of you there.

158

:

Yep.

159

:

Hey, even our ladies are

going back to Mount Lebanon.

160

:

Is that right?

161

:

They're going to Mount Lebanon.

162

:

For the first time.

163

:

Because of how good it was.

164

:

It was just awesome.

165

:

So good.

166

:

They do a great job down there.

167

:

And it's close enough.

168

:

It's close enough because

you know how I know this?

169

:

Because last year I left my laptop

there and I had to drive down there on

170

:

Sunday morning, right before church.

171

:

So it's only about an

hour away from our church.

172

:

I know that to be true.

173

:

Wow.

174

:

On a Sunday.

175

:

You got there pretty quick.

176

:

Yeah, I did.

177

:

Yeah.

178

:

Yeah.

179

:

Anyways.

180

:

Hey, let's jump into our text.

181

:

Exodus 13 and 13 through 15.

182

:

Yeah.

183

:

13 through 15.

184

:

Exodus 13.

185

:

We've got the initial exit

from Egypt behind us now.

186

:

So Moses gathers the people to deliver

further instructions from the Lord.

187

:

And then he says, And he tells them

how they were to redeem the firstborn

188

:

and act and act remembering how God had

delivered the firstborn from the plague

189

:

of the firstborn that they had just

happened as we talked about yesterday.

190

:

And also explained again, the way

that they were to go about remembering

191

:

and celebrating the Passover.

192

:

So he's gathering the people together.

193

:

He's reinforcing these things.

194

:

He's saying, you just

saw what the Lord did.

195

:

Now it's time.

196

:

You're going to have to

redeem the firstborn.

197

:

You're going to have to remember these

things and consecrate the firstborn

198

:

yourself in a symbolic act there.

199

:

Super close note.

200

:

Exodus 13, 3, 9, 14, and 16.

201

:

The repeated phrase for by a strong hand,

the Lord brought you out from this place.

202

:

That is is something that is, is easy to

miss because we can read through Exodus

203

:

13 and we can read that repeated phrase.

204

:

All those different times.

205

:

And if we're not looking for repetition,

we might miss the significance of that.

206

:

So Moses wants them to

be absolutely clear.

207

:

In fact, this is, was a cool moment.

208

:

Just as a dad last night, as we're

recording this, so Friday night I

209

:

was putting my son Luke to bed and he

was sitting in his bed and he had his

210

:

notebook out, he likes to write in

it and he had written some questions

211

:

down and one of the questions he

wrote was, why did God use Moses?

212

:

To deliver the people from Israel.

213

:

And we talked about that.

214

:

I said why, what questions do you have?

215

:

Why wouldn't he use Moses?

216

:

And he said Moses murdered a man.

217

:

And we talked about how he was defending

the Israelite and everything there.

218

:

But the point is, and I

think it's here as well.

219

:

Moses wanted the people to know this

as well, that Moses wasn't the hero.

220

:

Moses wasn't the deliverer.

221

:

Moses was.

222

:

Just simply the guy that God used, but

God is the one that gets the glory.

223

:

For by a strong hand, the Lord

brought you out from this place.

224

:

Moses wanted them to be

abundantly clear on that.

225

:

When we talk about our church

and the victories that we have as

226

:

a church, that's something that

we want to be clear on as well.

227

:

God is the one building the

church unless the Lord builds it.

228

:

Those who labor build it in vain.

229

:

So we are not the heroes of the story.

230

:

We are not the heroes of the church.

231

:

God is the one that's doing it.

232

:

Exodus 13, 9, 14 and 16

that repeated phrase.

233

:

Also notice in verse five,

the focus on the land.

234

:

The land is the reference to the Abrahamic

covenant in the words which he swore

235

:

to your forefathers to give to you.

236

:

So God is promising them the land

as well there in in Exodus chapter

237

:

13, and you are having too much fun

with this Instagram live situation.

238

:

, I'm sorry man.

239

:

I'm just, okay.

240

:

I'm back here.

241

:

Were you validating that I had coffee

in my mug and not something nefarious?

242

:

We want to know what's in there.

243

:

The people want to know, bro.

244

:

I'm just doing, I'm a man of the people.

245

:

I'm doing what they want me to do.

246

:

It's coffee.

247

:

It's coffee.

248

:

Okay.

249

:

Anyways, verses 17 through 22 then.

250

:

The Lord is not going to abandon

them once they're out of Egypt.

251

:

It's not hey, good luck.

252

:

See you later.

253

:

And again, there's a, this is a

microcosm of salvation, right?

254

:

The Lord delivers us from our sin and

then he stays with us and he's going

255

:

to lead us, he's going to guide us.

256

:

He's going to work for

our Christ likeness.

257

:

And so here it's not that, that he's

working towards their Christ likeness,

258

:

but he's not going to abandon his people.

259

:

It's not Hey, I got you out of slavery.

260

:

Good luck.

261

:

He's going to lead them on the way, and

he's going to do that by night and by day.

262

:

And it's going to be the pillar of cloud

by day and the pillar of fire by night.

263

:

In the rest of chapter 13 there, anything

on chapter 13, it's a really good chapter.

264

:

That's insightful.

265

:

I've got all the insights.

266

:

I'm only half paying attention

because I'm now so fascinated

267

:

with what we're doing here.

268

:

Social media the ones and ones

of people that are watching.

269

:

I just, I feel so obligated to

care for them and I just want

270

:

to show them around as well.

271

:

I'm sure they would love to see

what you're doing at the same time.

272

:

So you don't have a

coffee mug or anything.

273

:

I have nothing fun over here.

274

:

All right.

275

:

Chapter 14.

276

:

Pastor, why don't you

take chapter 14 for us?

277

:

I'm not prepared.

278

:

Okay.

279

:

This chapter is about the

crossing of the red seat.

280

:

Does that jog your memory there?

281

:

I see it.

282

:

I'm looking at it on the page.

283

:

All right, the first 14 verses of

chapter 14, they set up the tension

284

:

and then after this God is going

to work through this deliverance.

285

:

So the first 14 verses that they're

getting to the Red Sea, they

286

:

know, okay, nobody's expecting

the seat apart here, right?

287

:

We know the story, but

they didn't know the story.

288

:

And so nobody at this point is sitting

there going, okay, Moses is going to,

289

:

part the Red Sea and all Pharaoh's

army is going to do the dead man float

290

:

after we crossed through on dry land.

291

:

And Oof.

292

:

Nobody's expecting this.

293

:

And so they're panicked.

294

:

God says, Hey, here's

what I want you to do.

295

:

I want you to drive them forward

and hold out your staff and

296

:

the water's going to part.

297

:

And he sends a wind to

drive the water back.

298

:

And this is a miraculous event, not

just a windstorm because the ground

299

:

is dry as they walk across it.

300

:

And no matter how strong the wind may

have been at number one, to drive the

301

:

water back in different directions,

you're not going to find natural wind.

302

:

That's going to blow two

directions at the same time.

303

:

And then number two, the fact

that the ground is dry, I don't

304

:

care how strong the storm is.

305

:

It's not going to dry that quickly.

306

:

And right after this, then when Pharaoh's

army goes in their wheels and everything

307

:

else, they get caught in the mud.

308

:

So This is a God thing that he does to

deliver the heart, to deliver the people.

309

:

He's going to do a lot of that here.

310

:

He's going to remind the people that

he is God, that he's the one behind all

311

:

this, so as to encourage them and not

to let them grow weary or frightened.

312

:

Speaking of behind, in verse 19,

it says that the angel of God,

313

:

who is going before the host of

Israel, Moved in, went behind them.

314

:

It's I couldn't help, but think of the

shepherd analogy in Psalm 23, he goes

315

:

before us, he goes beside us, he goes

behind us, he's chasing this down with

316

:

mercy and grace all the days of our lives.

317

:

I love this image of God circling

them about as it were to ensure

318

:

that they get across safely.

319

:

And they seem to get the point.

320

:

This is one of the high points in

Israel's history, not only in the salvific

321

:

events, but also in their response.

322

:

I don't want to steal your

thunder in there, but they

323

:

respond really well to this.

324

:

Yeah.

325

:

Yeah, which is chapter 15, the

song that they sing, the song of

326

:

praise, and it just rejoices in

everything that God has done there.

327

:

One more note in chapter 14, notice

in verse 14 and verse 25 verse

328

:

14, the Lord will fight for you.

329

:

And then again, in verse 25, it

says, the Egyptian said, let us flee

330

:

from Israel for the Lord fights for

them and think back to the changing

331

:

of Jacob's name to the name Israel.

332

:

The name Israel again can mean

fights with God or God fights.

333

:

And if the emphasis is on God

fights then here we see that

334

:

God is fighting for Israel.

335

:

God is fulfilling the name of

his people by fighting for them.

336

:

Something that even the Egyptians know.

337

:

But yeah, chapter 15 they create a song.

338

:

They begin to praise God for his

deliverance and In anticipating even not

339

:

just the deliverance, but that they're

going to see that the promise land,

340

:

and this is a high point but it's not

going to stay a high point for long.

341

:

Unfortunately, as we'll see mostly in

tomorrow's Episode but a little bit

342

:

here at the end of chapter 15, but

this also Tells us that the nations

343

:

took note of this, too Now there was

no instagram live during the exodus

344

:

and so they couldn't go on just like

we are right now and say hey Listen up.

345

:

This is the god of israel doing this

but news traveled news of pharaoh's

346

:

defeat And the nations, the Philistines,

the others began to tremble and fear

347

:

the Israelites, which is part of what

God was doing to prepare the entrance.

348

:

You'll remember.

349

:

And we'll get there when

Joshua and the sends out the

350

:

spies and they come to Rahab.

351

:

Rahab knows about Israel.

352

:

How does Rahab know about Israel?

353

:

Because they know.

354

:

This situation the deliverance that

God had worked for the people of

355

:

Israel had been broadcast whether

it's through this song or through

356

:

other Situations and the nation's

knew that God fought for his people.

357

:

What do we do with the fact that

Deborah's called a prophetess?

358

:

Sorry, not Deborah Miriam.

359

:

That's a different prophet.

360

:

Miriam at the bottom of chapter 15 verse

20, then Miriam, the prophet is the sister

361

:

of Aaron took a tambourine in her hand.

362

:

And with all the women went out

after her with tambourines and

363

:

dancing and Miriam sang to them.

364

:

So Miriam gets a little bit of a head

nod here in that she's doing something

365

:

similar to what Moses is doing.

366

:

We know that there's going to be

issues between the three of them later.

367

:

There's going to be some jealousy there.

368

:

But the wording about calling her a

prophet is that seems I don't know.

369

:

That seems like a bit much.

370

:

Yes, except that This is not The only

situation we have in the old testament

371

:

of god using A woman in a position that

is unique you think forward to Deborah

372

:

as you mentioned and in others This is at

the same time not the church right and so

373

:

we would draw a distinction and say that

she is not serving as a this is not Some

374

:

people will appeal to this and be like

look we should have women pastors because

375

:

miriam was a prophet totally But this is

not the church And the instructions that

376

:

are given to the church are separate and

distinct from those that were governing

377

:

this particular dispensation in the,

during the history of the people of God.

378

:

I think it's also telling that still the

leader that got entrusted, the leaders

379

:

that God put in place were the men and

the, they were the ones that were called

380

:

to fulfill the role that God had for them.

381

:

But I think we, we're, Playing on two

different fields, when we try to look

382

:

at Old Testament examples and draw

the parallel to New Testament offices

383

:

and say, because this Old Testament

example exists, we should say that

384

:

there's room for it in the New Testament

when the New Testament is the church.

385

:

And there are different, there are

superseding instructions given in the

386

:

New Testament that specifically speak

to the role of women and men within

387

:

the church and where authority lies.

388

:

That's a really helpful insight.

389

:

And I just want to draw one to point your

attention to, and it's that Moses wrote a

390

:

song to commemorate what they were doing.

391

:

He sang he led them to sing they were

all in unison as it were singing to

392

:

the Lord saying look at what God Has

done he deserves our songs This is

393

:

one of the reasons we still sing in

our churches today Even though there

394

:

is some discontinuity between the Old

and New Testament There is continuity

395

:

and one of the things is that we sing

we are singing people and it's because

396

:

God has saved them That's why they sing

and consequently Salvation acts warrant

397

:

our heart Hardy responds in song to

the Lord, which is why again, we still

398

:

sing today and why it's so important.

399

:

It's commemorated in

scripture It's acknowledged.

400

:

It's one way to honor the Lord and that's

why you should be at church tomorrow

401

:

Wait, what day is today tomorrow as we

record so you guys be at church tomorrow.

402

:

That's right This is for the instagram

live people which is why you should go

403

:

to church on sunday and sing heartily

and show up on time I know sometimes

404

:

it's hard to get out the door i'm not

immune to having those difficult days of

405

:

putting people in the van or whatever You

But being there and showcasing to your

406

:

family and your church family that this

is worth your time and attention Such a

407

:

good thing to do and it's again biblically

prescribed as part of the people of god.

408

:

Yep.

409

:

Yeah, I agree Exodus 15 verses 22

through 27 then the chapter ends This

410

:

is the first post exodus account of

the people grumbling against moses.

411

:

And so the high point Is not high for very

long because now they're going to say we

412

:

don't have any water and there's no water

to drink So moses, what are you doing?

413

:

You should have left us in egypt.

414

:

There was how quickly things

have turned Yeah, how quick yeah,

415

:

although it is interesting because

we don't know exactly The time

416

:

frame that's passing 13 minutes 13.

417

:

Okay.

418

:

That's my guess.

419

:

Your bible has a note that mine

doesn't have Is that the one that

420

:

the press and sprinkle wrote?

421

:

What if he listens to our podcast

what are you going to do about that?

422

:

He can reach out to me.

423

:

I'll talk to him.

424

:

All right, press and hit

me up I'll talk to you.

425

:

Let me tag them for you right now.

426

:

Awesome.

427

:

Great.

428

:

And so Moses goes to God.

429

:

God says, here's what I'm going to do.

430

:

And God is patient right now.

431

:

And he's going to continue to be patient

with his people for a good amount of time.

432

:

God is a long suffering God.

433

:

He is slow to anger.

434

:

His anger is going to come, but

he's going to be slow to anger.

435

:

Responds and gives them this water

from the the, by throwing a rock

436

:

into the stream there, or a log

rather into the stream there.

437

:

But then he challenges them

with this conditional promise.

438

:

And he says, look, I'm

going to be your healer.

439

:

I'm going to be God, your healer,

if you obey me, but if not.

440

:

You know what?

441

:

You're going to suffer the plagues

that had befallen the Egyptians.

442

:

And one author said, it's a note

here that he doesn't say I'm going

443

:

to heal the water, but I'm going to

heal you because the issue was not

444

:

so much that the water was had a

problem, but their heart had a problem.

445

:

And so God is saying to his people,

Hey, I'm going to be with you as

446

:

your healer spiritually speaking.

447

:

But here's what I'm asking of you.

448

:

You need to obey.

449

:

You need to listen.

450

:

You need to be committed to me in that.

451

:

And if you don't, then men buckle up

because bad things are gonna happen.

452

:

All right, let's pray.

453

:

And then we'll be done with this episode.

454

:

God, thanks for your word.

455

:

Thanks for just the clarity.

456

:

We do thank you for song.

457

:

It's something that in the new

Testament we're commanded to do.

458

:

We're commanded to sing spiritual

songs to one another in hymns.

459

:

And that is something that

we need to do corporately.

460

:

That is even the context of Colossians

three, this is to one another.

461

:

And so if we are not participating in

that and the body of Christ, then we

462

:

are not Participating in something that

you've designed for us and called us

463

:

to do if we're not prioritizing that

because we don't think it's as Important

464

:

as another part of the service and then

we are missing A vital component of

465

:

the spirit's work in our lives is the

body of christ So god, I pray that we

466

:

would have the wherewithal to see it as

what it is as important as crucial as

467

:

integral And even that we would desire

it because how often are we going through

468

:

our day and a song pops in our mind?

469

:

And how good would it be to have that song

be one that we sing together on Sunday?

470

:

That song to be one that we are

hearing the voices of our brothers

471

:

and sisters in Christ in our head as

we're singing through it together.

472

:

So God, we want to do everything we do

as a church with Vibrancy and passion

473

:

and drive and so we ask that would be

true of our body at compass And so we

474

:

thank you for this in christ's name.

475

:

Amen.

476

:

Amen Keep reading bibles tuning
