Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about the power of “Word of Mouth” (WOM).
WOM can be defined in a few different ways, but how it’s traditionally known is the passing of information from person to person using oral communication. This is simply where a person tells a story about either a real (or made-up) event to someone else.
Word of mouth like storytelling has been around since the beginning of time. In many cultures, “the keepers of the stories” were revered for their gifts and for being the ones who held and shared the knowledge, anecdotes and history of the ancestors and the land. Without them, the clan had no past and with them came a vital sense of identity and belonging for the members of the group.
Another facet of WOM I appreciate is spreading the good word about someone or something via referral - either by electronic, printed or verbal means. It’s like organic, spontaneous, heart directed marketing that inspires you to want to share your experience with others!
I think it's wicked important that when we discover something we love, whether it's a product, a person, a place, or a program, that we use our own word of mouth power to help spread that love and show our support for both it and its creator.
It matters because as you’ll learn from this episode what makes “Word of Mouth” so effective is that it all boils down to trust. Research has shown time and again that, “Consumers trust personal recommendations above all other sources of information in the buying process.”
This same concept also extends to the people in our lives. The way we communicate with one another makes a difference. Through the power of our words, we have the ability to either tear them down or to lift them up, to “crucify” people or to “resurrect” them.
So whether we write a testimonial, hit the “share button”, do a love shout out, make a referral or help someone see themselves as they really are, let's choose and use our words intentionally.
May our own “word of mouth” communications be powerful, positive, impactful, genuine, generous, supportive, inspirational and trustworthy.
